Though originally thought to be the name of a malicious character within the game Webkinz, the term 'Webkinz Killer' is actually more of an umbrella term for a number of bizarre rumours that spread about the game in the mid to late 2000's. From vengeful ex-employees, to viruses that could brick your PC, to rival game websites hacking and deleting accounts to, of course, the legend of Dr. Quack, an evil NPC hellbent on maiming pets. Today let's take a look back at the 'Webkinz Killer' rumour!

I’m not sure if you ever saw it, but there used to be a website called “Dudkinz”, which hosted one person’s fan-made “rejected” Webkinz. They were all horror-themed, and the story was that each one was supposed to have been a Webkinz that had been rejected for being too “scary” or “gross”, etc. For some reason myself and a friend were obsessed with it in elementary school (we were also obsessed w/ Webkinz as a whole), and went on the site all the time to read the toy’s biographies and lore and such. I'm so glad you covered this topic. The Webkinz Killer personally terrorized me back in 2007 when I was in the 4th grade. In that, I was a victim of playground gossip and was convinced The Webkinz Killer would kill my precious Webkinz at any moment. It got to the point that I was too scared to walk by the computer room (a thing at that point in time) and once finding that Webkinz PSA about the rumor, my mom immediately printed 30 copies to hand out to my entire class. It's hilarious to think of now but at the time I remember thinking it was life or death.

I legit got my mom to send my Webkinz to get a checkup with me, because I was shaking and in tears, afraid that Dr. Quack would literally kill them. Nothing happened (obviously), but I was genuinely scared of losing my Webkinz.
I honestly thought that rumor was just a thing at my Pennsylvania public elementary school. I didn’t realize it was such a widespread online urban legend.
EDIT: I texted my mom “Do you remember that time I had a panic attack about Dr. Quack killing my Webkinz,” and she said she did, very well. She apparently also heard about the Neopets feud through other parents in the neighborhood. Rumor had it that the Neopets were going to invade Webkinz and murder everyone’s pets. I don’t ever remember hearing about it, but that’s mostly just because I was never into Neopets, and I never got into fights about the games I liked. I was just vibing out on Webkinz, unbothered by their competitors.

A parent email you showed brought it up briefly, but the more in-depth version I read detailed that if you went into an outdoor room at night (because they have a day cycle according to your computer's clock), a bear with red eyes would be lurking in the trees, then it'd jump out and kill your Webkinz. Even though I was a smart kid and knew all these rumors were fake, somehow that one got to me. I deliberately avoided outdoor rooms at night lol. It just creeped me out.
