Pocahontas is genuinely one of the most visually stunning movies of all time, in my opinion! You can take pretty much any frame from Colors of the Wind and it'll be an artistic masterpiece. THE COLOR SCHEMES ARE SO GOOD

I totally agree, but in my opinion the art for Sleeping Beauty will always be my #1 favorite! Every frame is so stunning and detailed I love it!

I always felt that fairytales such as Pocahontas, Brother bear & the Hunchback were always more serious and definitely weren't my favourite when I was a child but now I definitely appreciate the movies for the lessons they teach us.

Yes Poachontas being preachy as hell. My recommendation is to watch Princess Mononoke

Pocahontas meant so much to me when I was a kid. She, along with Jasmine, were the only princesses that looked like people in my family, so, I tended to gravitate towards those vhs tapes more growing up.

Pocahontas was my favorite Disney movie as a child, with The Lion King as a close second.
I really do think this movie shaped who I am. It really influenced me to love and accept everyone around me. As I got older, it resonated with me even more.
    Moves me to tears now.
Thank you for making this Down to Disness!

I'm so happy Russell Means (may he rest in peace) liked the intro to Pocahontas' tribe in the movie! I'm not Native American, but I am glad it's as accurate as possible (The culture, not the history).

Yay! Thank you for finally doing a Down to Disness on Pocahontas. It's in my top 3 favorite Disney movies and definitely underrated. I totally get what you said about kids not being interested in it. I feel like when I was a kid, I thought it was okay. I loved "Colors of the Wind" though. But then I remember rewatching it sometime in high school, and I fell in love with it. I love the romance, I love the characters, and I love what it stands for. People can say what they want about the movie and its inaccuracies, but I will continue to love such an amazing film. I will also continue to love John Smith forever. Lol

So great to see a fellow Pocahontas fan! I genuinely adore this movie, I think it has the best animation Disney's ever made and the soundtrack is absolutely mesmerizing.

What a lot of people also forget to mention is that this story technically is a "fairy tale." When John Smith arrived in America, it was not 'easy-going' for them. Harsh winters, very little food, no knowledge of America's flora (what is edible vs poisonous) as well as not being able to find gold (one of the main reasons for the exploration of America). But, to keep the patronage of the Queen in England and other parliament he had to lie A LOT. He kept letters and many journals that were extremely fictitious, because he needed to woo the court somehow. Explaining the true reality of the early settlement would have most likely stopped John Smith and his men from being able to continue working the on the exploration and also left them broke. So he did actually write down a very tall tail inspired by real people--about an Indian chief who was about to kill him, until his beautiful daughter throws herself down upon him to stop the bludgeon. This false story really intrigued everyone in England--and in a way made Smith the talk of the town. (Many scholars believe it was so popular because it romanticized the "unknown" and glorified the west--but having a Native American willingly sacrifice herself for a white, Englishman). On top of that, you can reimagine how the game of "telephone" works--as the story gets told, its gets deeply embellished and things are added to make the story more interesting. This, is how we got the "love story" that we have today between an Englishman and an "Indian Princess." So, perhaps it would be better to look at the story more from a fictional romance of two worlds colliding, rather than a historical anecdote.
But, that's just my two cents.

1st Pocahantas is my favorite Disney Princess. 2nd my favorite scene is at the end where she is getting ready and then running to the cliff to see the ship leave. The music score for that scene as well as the animation and end scene are just amazing!

I love everything about this movie, the interesting story, the wonderful soundtrack, the animation, the characters, EVERYTHING. This movie is absolutely one of my favorites, now even more than I was a child. The story is more touching when I'm all grown up and I want to belive that love can survive even in a world of hate and racism, and can change the minds of those who hate. Now when I'm not a child anymore, the srory and the lyrics are in another perspective for me, which makes the story even better.

As a little kid I loved to watch Pocahontas, along with the Lion King, bus only when I rewatched it a few years ago I realised what big of an impact it had on me, and that's one of the many reasons why I love this film so dearly. It saddens me that a lot of people don't appreciate the film solely because of the historical inaccuracies, and cannot see the film outside the historical context. But thank you very much for this (mostly) non-biased description of Pocahontas!

One of my Favourite Disney movies of all time, I loved Pocahontas and I think that whilst it may not totally represent her life accurately, it was still enough to make children aware of this historical figure and to maybe then want to find out more about the real Pocahontas. Awesome movie, great music! That is so cool that premiered on the real Pocahontas' birthday!

Colors of the wind is my favorite song too! I always randomly sing it while hiking hahaha. And Pocahontas is my favorite disney princess. I feel like she is so underrated. I love her character and what she stands for and how spiritual and bright she is. I want to be Pocahontas so bad lolol. I wish disney had more Pocahontas merchandise. And I wish they had a meet and greet with her at Disneyland. I go at least twice a year and never see her and I asked a cast member once about it and he said it was VER VERY VERY rare to ever get to see her around Disneyland.

Pocahontas is one of my most favorite Disney/Pixar films besides Mulan & Merida because I'm half Native American and I'm half white and one day I hope I can play her, in a production of Pocahontas because it's just so rich and close to my culture and I love it deeply. Pocahontas is one of the reasons I'm in theatre now besides Grease, Beyonce and Michael Jackson!

As a kid I never had original VHS tapes, but I had one that was had Cinderella and Pocahontas on it, and I totally get that it wasn't that mucho "for children". I used to hate Pocahontas for such a long time because my favourite movie was Cinderella so everytime Pocahontas started meant that Cinderella ended so it made me sad (3 years old logic) and I always thought it was boring.
It wasn't up until a few years ago that I rewatched it and I LOVED IT! (I mean, ignoring the historical innacuracy) especially Colors of the wind, it is such a beautiful song.

I absolutely LOVE the soundtrack to this movie!! The lyricist, Stephen Schwartz, later went on to write the songs in my all-time favorite musical, Wicked. 🙌🏼💖
Even though Pocahontas is a good movie, I think it will always be controversial because of the historical inaccuracies. I remember in high school, there was a section of my US History book about her, and it said her relationship with Smith, as it's presented in the movie, ACTUALLY HAPPENED(it didn't, btw). They literally tried to pass the plot of the movie off as fact. But, to Disney's credit, the sequel is much more true to actual historical events.
But, like you said, Sarah, I think Disney needed to take a step towards dealing with other races. I think the overall success of the movie opened doors for films like Mulan, Brother Bear, Lilo & Stitch, PATF, and Moana, all of which feature POC as the main characters.

the art style and the magical element to it when she visits grandmother Willow...the thing i do not like about It wich Is what makes it different Is the fact that the ending Is bitter sweet..Though She sorted out the "war" she Lost both men along the way. Thankyou for your review.
