    My copy of this book actually comes with an extra pamphlet with all the translations for the text. That might have been done for overseas distribution since i got my copy from the German version of Amazon back in the day.

      @johnhunt6555 Год назад +2

      They did that with the Amazon english Genga I think. I think I lost the interviews. Or it could have been Kaba 2. All I remember is he was interviewed by some manga artist that only makes short works. Otomo was a big fan of hers and she was a big fan of him. It was pretty interesting them airing their frustration that short, limited stories are a hard sell to editors in Japan unless you are established and even then its tough.

    • @Aaltomuoto
      @Aaltomuoto Год назад +1

      @@johnhunt6555 That sounds like the last interview in this book with Fumiko Takano. I don't have either of the Kaba books sadly, I always wondered how much overlap there is between those and Genga (Ed mentions some pieces as also being in one of the Kaba books)

      Good catch. Miles’s been especially popular in Japan during the 80s and spent some time over there.

    The images Ed wasn't sure they were from at 35:50 are production paintings for the anime movie Harmageddon aka Genma Taisen. Otomo did the character designs and concept art for it.

    You guys are spot on with the 2005 bicycle stuff. It was for a magazine where they hired him and Katsuya Terada to write and illustrate their coverage of a bike race in Italy. Terada and Otomo have a bicycling club with some other artists. They released the whole thing plus some other stuff like personal journal/sketchbook stuff as a two book set called Viva Il Ciclissimo. It's been out for over a decade but very affordable still online.

    Thanks for the shout out Ed! 銃音/A Gun Report is very hard to find. I spend a lot of time dogging in shops but have never seen it in the wild. The Complete edition was supposed to be released in Nov/Dec, but as we all know it's been delayed to get #23 Akira out the way Otomo wanted it. I can't wait for it though. His first tankobon is gonna be a goldmine of reflection on his art. :)

    Man, this is one of my most treasured books! Grabbed a copy in 2019 when I was in Japan. Aki kindly pointed it out to me and I snatched it up with a quickness before any of the other artists we were with could get their grubby hands on it! Score!

    It's a beautiful book. I went to the exhibition at the Nezu Art Museum. There are extras too like the exhibition bag, flyer, postcards, etc. I still have a bag from the show. I met him there...which is a long story not for here, but was amazing.

    I have to keep watching this in short implements because I keep having to pause the video and pour over the artwork. It's cats like Otomo who I genuinely wonder "Were you just BORN with a pencil attached to your hand?" Because the dudes level is just insane.

    Great book, got it on a discount from the Seattle Kinokuniya a few years ago. It's amazing, but also reminds me of how little of Otomo's comics have been released in English outside of Domu and Akira.

    Highway Star and Fireball could also refer to Deep Purple, as both are song titles from the band... They were very current in the mid 70s, and pretty popular in Japan at the time...

    Otomo is very similar to Kurosawa here in japan, the nerds like me love them but the general public don’t really know or appreciate them. Ty for showing the greatness of this amazing artist, forever studying him.

    Such an incredible book! I managed to find one last year at used book store.
    Side Note- at the 24:54 minute mark the image on the right of the man on the bed is a study of an Andrew Wyeth piece of art.

    It's funny what you said the quality of the artwork being there but something still being boring; I've often noticed the reverse about many comics from my childhood (Silver Age/Bronze Age) and before (Golden Age and early Silver). There were a lot of 60's Charlton and even many of DC's Golden Age JSA stories that the art is objectively "bad" or "lazy" even for their times that were some of the most exiting issues I ever read while others from the same eras and "modern" that even though my brain tells me is clearly high quality and skilled, just never drew me in. Even when the plots and writing were no better or worse than one another. Some magic ingredient is just missing. But man oh man when it has all those or even two of those elements is it amazing. True gifted art in every sense.
