It was published in the US in 1987 by First Comics and then again by Dark Horse Comics 2000-2002. The English digital version was released in 2012.

Obviously among the single greatest works of comics. Just blows me away to this day. And of course you know a huge part of the coolness of LW&C is the incredible level of historical research and detail in writing and art.

I've read LWaC twice all the way through, and read this artists edition twice. I tear up every time I've read the final chapters. I can't think of anything in comics that consistent in it's emotional effect in me.
    Thanks for this video!

I've yet to find a story that compares in any medium. I finished rereading it again last week and it's always better than I remember and I already consider it the best of the best.

Totally agree with you Jim. The pencilling is a tiny part of the Manga process. If you watch the Kazuhiro Fujita episode his work process absolutely shows that.

Some incredible storytelling towards the end, straight up blown away at some segments. Would love to see more Artist Editions vids in the future.

Wow. This is amazing. I only ever had a VHS copy of Baby Cart in Peril and just 1 of the books that I'm just not sure I even read. And GZA's Liquid Swords was very cool. I'm very glad you put this up. This is masterful work and I'm embarrassed that I wasn't more aware of it, even if I would talk up it up all the time, I still didn't even know how good it was. Thanks!

Also, great audio on this vid.

When I lived in Japan, I saw a page of manga, on black and white, in a museum that was drawn in the 1700s, roughly 200 years before the Yellow Kid! It was drawn by one of the heroes of the wood block print movement, Hiroshige. It was three wordless horizontal panels of a herd of horses. I have never heard any mention of this outside Japan!
The manga itself was printed by woodblock which is awesome in itself! It took a team of artists to carve the hardwood and print it.
Koike , who drew Kazure no Ōkami (Alone's Wolf) in the 50's, had a 200 year tradition of manga to look back on. Like you, I read the Dark Horse series.

I got this when First comics was putting it out, I loved the Frank Miller covers and I can definitely see the influence of this in his work on Ronin, Daredevil, and Wolverine.

I think I've heard that the red ink was the cheapest of the colors so that's probably why you find it in a lot of old publications and particularly in manga that's basically a throwaway book in Japan.

The smaller DH version: They were done this way because it is considered a masterpiece in Japan. As you know, most manga is recycled in that country. So, for the GREATS they issued them in a smaller size because space is a premium in the land of the rising sun. (I think I learned that from Paul Pope in PULPHOPE... but I might be wrong.)

Go ahead and continue to seek out that next "1st appearance," and i'll be perfectly content buying books like this.

I think the white around the panels is from a liquid protection that was laid down and then lifted off to keep the panel edges clean from the ink wash. Possibly.

Eric Himle Yeah, just a guess. Sometimes people will tape it off, lay down the protection, then remove the tape. Totally guessing here!

Ed, is the ending being inevitable quote Mamet or Sidney Lumet? I read it in Lumet’s Making Movies. Not that it’s a big deal, I’m sure a lot of talented writers have adopted it anyway. Great true quote.

I’ve been wanting to get into this series for ages, but the fact that it’s still being published with mirrored pages is a huge turn off for me. It just rubs me the wrong way that they’d alter the art in such a major and utterly needless way. It was the same way with Akira for ages too, until that 35th anniversary box set. It ain’t the eighties anymore, people read manga right to left!
