Thanks for taking the time to make this demo, Marty. Putting a variety of pedals in front of the amp was extremely valuable. Your efforts will have saved me a lot of time spent twiddling knobs. Keep up the excellent work, sir! BTW, love those speakers. I have a few of those myself.
I use this amp (ori20Head) with a green back in a DSL 20 open combo and it does not exactly sound like this. This old 4 x 12 makes a huge difference. Considering a 4 x 12 now !!

I picked up a second hand 20w Combo off Reverb in excellent condition and it’s great. I play it mostly in 5w mode and provides great crunch and as you say spot on for AC/DC type classic rock. Just contemplating my first steps into the aladdin’s cave of pedal tones so this video is very helpful.
My 50 watt combo loaded with a v30 is awesome. I have never used it in 50 watt mode as it is so loud 25 watt mode is fine for gigs. Excellent value for money.
My take on the Origin series: People like to poo poo these amps, but I think they're just hearing with their eyes. I got a 50h not too long ago and have been loving the trip down memory lane. Your very right about the classic sounds in these amps. Given a proper cab, they require zero modification. I also acquired a Greer Lightspeed to really unlock it. A transparent drive is the way to go over modding one of these if its not having issues. Killer used value too even in todays economy.
Glad to have a fellow origin lover on the channel! I cranked mine again yesterday. Had some guitar buddies over and they were like "damn that thing rocks". It's got a lot of beef for a 20 watt amp. And you can do a lot with the eq and tilt knobs. It really comes to life with a little overdrive in front too! 😎🤟🏻
They do work for metal, but you need a distortion pedal used as a boost. If you dial in the gain a little bit lower than AC/DC, then use a distortion pedal with the gain all the way or almost all the way down and volume dimed, and use the EQ on the amp as your primary tone sculpting tool, you can absolutely get hard rock and metal tones. I've also heard of people diming the gain sans gain boost and then using what's referred to as a "chainsaw" distortion with it to great effect.
@@73prd TBH I'd sooner use it as a platform for an HM-2, and pair in parallel with another high gain, boosted amp, which in my case would likely be an Orange OR-30 or Super Crush 100. In terms of modern metal tone, Plexi's are for Chainsaw, as far as I'm concerned, lol. Just like the soft pallette and artenoids are for BREEEE.
@@needsLITHIUM well I just sold my orange supercrush100 head and bought to marshall origin 50 head, hated the supercrush its bland, weird mids and Highgain sounds like a big muff pedal, my randall rg 1503h kicked its ass lol
Great job Marty! I can always watch your videos to demo stuff with the proper rock & 80s metal like it should be. Some channels are always clean sounding but I wanna hear it right - you deliver bro! And that Origin 20 - man that really sound sweet! I mean, people might think a Marshall Plexi must have tons of gain but not really. Bands back then, before the mid/late 80s, used this amp - like you said, KISS (a Marshall Plexi). I almost got one of these in a combo a couple of years ago, but I got the British made JCM800 instead. Love it too 🤘 the way I see it, the 70s to early 80s was the Plexi, then in 80s to early 90s was the JCM800, then the 90s had the JCM900, and the 2000s came the JCM2000. Those are really too much fizzle for me, so I think the Plexi or the JCM800 are outstanding pedal platforms. Just like this Origin 20, I have my JCM800 gain cranked - I think it fattens it up more than anything - then I can add a Boss Super Distortion. But really, you showcased the sweet sound of the Origin20. I may just have to get one of these!!! (Let me know if you want to sell the PM). 🤘🤘
Thanks man! I really try to demo the stuff decently. You're very right man. The 80's were all about that plexi sound. Concerts were so loud lol. And you could feel it. As time progressed amps have continually got fatter and more distorted. Not a bad thing. Just changes. But the barking mid range crunch is so trademark Marshall. And it fits right in a mix and band setting so well!

My real OCD is loved by even who hears it and the borrow it for gigs and recording. They are not interested in my other overdrive and distortion pedals. It sounds amazing.
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker yeah, I should have mentioned they are borrowing the Origin as well. Going to get the DSL 20 as well as my son’s band now have one loud amp and one quiet amp.
I bought the Golden horse and your spot on it absolute rocks I booted all other dirt pedals off my board besides my blues driver and kept the horse, great pedal
What I luv about the Origin is not only does it sound amazing, but it has the same tube compliment as the 50w Origin but these tubes run lower voltage to bring the wattage down! Meaning the tubes will LAST A VERY LONG TIME! And with the price of good tubes now-a-dayz that is great news!
I wondered how they have the exact same tube compliment on a 20 and a 50 watt version. That’s how they bring the wattage down? By biasing the circuit frigid cold?! 😂 I was already going to buy the 50, but thank you, that was the reason I needed to go for the 50. I want my tubes running at optimal bias.
Nice review sir. That cab makes it sound amazing. I have the 20c with a 10 inch greenback. But that cab is the real deal . Liked and subscribed. Cheers

Fantastic tone. I always wanted a Plexi but of course volume and cost was prohibitive, so I got a DSL 401. After 15 years I was finally getting the tone I wanted but it was a frustrating journey and I developed a love/hate relationship with my first tube amp. Now it sounded amazing, with an EQ in the loop 6.4k at 0 to cut the fizz, TS + Plexi Drive up front, and most significant besides the EQ a Creamback instead of the god aweful G12T100. Unfortunately I came into some financial problems and sold a lot of gear including the amp. I have none at the moment. But I only lasted a week until I found an almost brand new Origin 20C for 300€ so I got it. Should arrive before the weekend I hope. Would have loved the head but combo is just so much cheaper to get going for now. I think in the end despite having felt quite desperate and sad after selling my only and first real amp and some pedal and guitars that I loved, I will end up finally having the tone I always wanted pretty much out of the box for a very good price. I don't know why they are so hated. The design is a little weird and I hate that it's a tube buffered FX loop which limits the amount of solo boost you can do in the loop but it sounds fantastic. I think I watched 50 vids now. Maybe it's the likely Greenback loaded 4x12 but it sounds incredible here, even without drives. To me that's unthinkable. My old DSL plugging straight in was a fizzy, boxy, fizzy, cheap pedal sounding, fizzy mess. Did I mention it was a fizzy amp? The new DSL are way better especially having 2 Master Volumes and presence control but they still to me sound... not very good. Still fizzy, even treble and presence almost on 0 and very boxy. They really desperately need a Creamback and a drive upront to get some compression going or they sound aweful without an EQ in the loop. I don't know why they are shipped with such fizzy speakers and I don't know why an amp sold as high gain, really only sounds good with the gain below 5... but to bring this rant to an end, your video blew me away. Straight in sounded amazing and with a drive just incredible, master volume not even cranked. Which is good I need headroom to boost for leads, as much as I'd love the power amp distortion... thank you!

Dont even need an overdrive pedal. Just need the schaffer vega replica pedal. Low volume, and turn it on gives a great boost and overdrive. Its amazing.
I just got the 20C. The clean sound is very nice. My ... challenge with it is the distortion/ overdrive. With the gain pegged, I don't get that level of drive you seem to get (around 6:15). It's still pretty clean. I guess it's not really a problem as I will likely run pedals in front of it as you do. I can confirm, this thing is loud. Even on the low setting.
@marty5150. That's it! Crank Master Volume. I got a chance to test it out at higher volume levels today (my post was at night). With the master in the +7 range, I can get the distortion (and it sounds good too), but volume wise, even on "low output", it's no longer bedroom/ apartment/ other people in the house friendly. ;) I have a cable on order to hook up my attenuator. Hopefully that will let this amp breathe and not summon the angry villagers.
Something I recommend in lieu of an attenuator is putting an overdrive pedal in the effects loop and using the volume knob as the master vol for the amp. I try to set my drive to something transparent sounding, give or take however much gain you want. Then you can crank up the controls on the amp. It's not quite the same as an attenuator since the output tubes aren't really being pushed, but it does allow you to break up the preamp tubes at least while playing at any volume.
@@Baghdadbatterymusic I'll give it a try. I think it would do well with my fenders, bu the MV works on them as the distortion comes mostly from the preamp phase. For the Marshall, the classic distortion sound comes from the power amp distortion which is after the effects loop. With my Origin 20C, the gain dimed and the MV on low, there is little to no distortion.
Recently bought the origin 20. I love the tone of it by itself. But sometimes I want something a little more heavy. So I ended up getting a Joyo Chopper Z and a Berhinger SF300 and can get some pretty gnarly tones out of it.

even a blackstar would sound great thru that cab.. i had a origin 50 couldn't stand it and returned it. if i had that cab i would have kept it, great vid showcasing the cab tho
I'm about to do the Headfirst mod to mine, which turns it into a JCM800 circuit and adds Jose diode clipping. In doing so I will lose the tube buffered effects loop, which is one of the coolest thing about the amp as is. One of the best ways I've found to use this amp has been to use a Multi- effects modeler as my pre amp, and send it into the return on the loop, totally bypassing the preamp. Your master volume on the amp still works doing this. That tube buffer really acts like part of a preamp for a Multi- effects modeler and then the power tubes add their own additional distortion, making a Modeler sound fantastic. With the mod, my effects loop tube will be an additional gain stage for the original preamp and done away with as a buffer for the effects loop. I will probably add a solid state loop back in, but will sure miss the tube loop. None the less, it will essentially turn the amp into a Jake E. Lee firebreather. Cool video, you are getting some great sounds out of it.
Hey I'm too dumb to go by the videos alone. If you're bored and want to make a set of instructions for the headfirst Plexi mod, I would be super grateful
@@221b-l3t I'm a novice at this myself. The mods are pretty straight forward from their bill of materials list. But. the original boards are difficult to get components out of. Marshall used lead free solder on them and the holes are small. Even flooding them with new solder, some of the components are hard to remove without damaging the PCB. I ended up having to do so many repairs to my PCB from burned traces and such that I ended up buying Headfirst's Dropin PCB and simply populating that.
@@DR._PAUL I see, that's sounds disconcerting, I've got a pretty shaky soldering hand. Well for now with a Greenback, I think I'll get the sounds I want without modding.
@@221b-l3t I was doing the Jake E. Lee Headfirst Mod ...I didn't have much trouble removing resistors, but the capacitors were really difficult to get out. If you do it, make sure you set your temp to about 355C for the soldering iron. If you yank on them too hard it will lift the eyelet and trace. I think my biggest mistake was getting aggrevated and not patient enough. You could do it, just be careful and patient and put plenty of new solder into the hole, as the lead free stuff is like concrete and doesn't want to flow, so when you add new solder it mixes with the old and will flow. I used a solder sucker to pull the melted solder out.... It is just replacing a few components, but they can be aggrevating to get out. I ruined some JST connections... those are bad about burning the eyelets and traces, as you are having to heat four at once.... Anyway, I have the new PCB about populated and will test it out soon. It has some really neat features and the eyelets are larger.. Yeah, the 12" speaker makes a world of difference in the Origin 20. I have a video on here of replacing mine. It was like a brand new Origin 20C but the speaker baffle was busted.... so I replaced the baffle and speaker with a Celestion Anniversary 30 ... With the drop in PCB, I'll now have a solid state FX return... But, with the drop-in, the SS effects loop should still work with the foot switch.... which was another problem with the mod and purchasing their fx loop to add to the existing board.... I couldn't figure out how to make it work with the foot switch. I'll see if I can do a video on the drop in PCB,
@@DR._PAUL I see. Yeah was interested in the solid state FX loop since I really need it and a Plexi mod would kill it. And since my soldering style is getting angry and applying force, I think, I'll stay away from that for a while... I like the stock tone a lot. Also don't have a very good iron so yeah... I will definetly do the dual master footswitcheable volume mod though, that seems easy enough and easy to remove again if I screws up. That way I wouldn't need the FX loop anymore since my primary use is boosting for leads. So I need headroom either way and probably wouldn't run it dimed unless I had a competent sound guy to boost the leads through the PA. But my experience has been to favour self reliance in that regard.

The OCD kills those other pedals. No noise when you engaged it and it was the fattest sounding pedal. The Tumnus gave me a tummy ache. The P-Melter would be my second choice, but it's not the OCD. This is my opinion as a blues rock guitar player influenced by Hendrix, Beck, and Gary Moore. I use an original OCD, so I'm know what it can do.

I don't know why they look so small in videos? I have the 20 watt head (albeit in cream) and it is bigger than it looks here. Edit: It's also a great amp too. It sounds better the louder it gets (like all tube amps) so using an attenuator will get you a better tone. I'm using a cheapie bugera ps1, and cranking, it really comes alive.
I bought a dsl40c before the origin came out. The high gain channels are useless for me. I think the origin and a pedal would have been perfect for me.
Yep but as user of DSLs for 15 years, which I sold to buy an origin let me tell you how to make it sound like you want. Treble 4 or lower, bass 5 or lower, mids 5-8. EQ in the FX loop, cut 6.4 k completely, anything above as well. Very slightly boost 100k. And the best thing I did was replace the speakers with a Creamback. All the fizz was gone and I got classic 70s heavy metal tones and fantastic blues tones. Also Tubescreamer upfront. It needs it. Optionally a second drive as well, I use a cheap clone of a Plexi drive and a Rat. That is how you get good high gain tones out of a DSL. Mine was a DSL401 but at my bands practise room I use the other guitarists DSL40C and he has a DSL100H so I am familiar. It was mostly the same procedure between DSL401 and DSL40C. I LOVED the dual foot switchable master volume on the 40C though. Nr.1 EQ in loop, biggest change Nr.2 Tubescreamer any cheap clone is fine I use Behringer TO800. Nr.3 Change speaker. Creamback removes all the negative aspects the fizzy tone etc.. And now you will love it and probably break out into a Judas Priest riff with a big smile.

Great video, i do wonder tho i've had this for a year and didnt know about the pulling out the gain button! But when i do it, the sound does not change at all🤔 i live in an apartment so i only have the volume at 1, and i get a bit of crunxhy sound, so i hoped pulling it out would give me more distortion at low volumes, but didn't notice anything :/ is something wrong or is it simply because i am not using real volume? I have the 50 version btw. Edit- i had the foot controller plugged in and it has its own boost button. To use the pull out gain button the foot controller needs to be disconnected

Sounded killer with the OD pedal 🤘
Thanks man! It was fun to demo!

Try a metal core they sound fantastic
@@73prd Boss, or NuX? I've heard nothing but great things about both 😁
@@needsLITHIUM boss
You got some amazing tones out of those amps and pedals. That fury cat one sounds the best though.

Really Awesome sounding. Best I've heard with these. Got me thinking!
@briantost7125 couldn't you just re-bias the 20 or is it fixed?

Holy crap! You sure know yer pedals, they all sound great!
Which is good I need headroom to boost for leads, as much as I'd love the power amp distortion... thank you!
That was awesome! Nice playing 👍

Nice demo, and nice axe too.
Dont even need an overdrive pedal. Just need the schaffer vega replica pedal. Low volume, and turn it on gives a great boost and overdrive. Its amazing.
Have you tried boost it with a ep booter or any other clean boost? sounds great btw thanks for the video.
Never did, but I'm sure it'd be great. Plus with an eq!
Did you try to pull out the push pull knob? Also you gotta crank up the main volume on the left and put the gain on 10 too. 😎🤟🏻
@marty5150.
Awesome demo and tones per usual. 😁👍👏

Damn that thing sings
even a blackstar would sound great thru that cab.. i had a origin 50 couldn't stand it and returned it. if i had that cab i would have kept it, great vid showcasing the cab tho
Just needs an attenuator so you can crank the volume/gain all the way up and you can get that classic marshall crunch
None the less, it will essentially turn the amp into a Jake
The amp sounds great.

Nr.1 EQ in loop, biggest change
Nr.2 Tubescreamer any cheap clone is fine I use Behringer TO800.
Nr.3 Change speaker. Creamback removes all the negative aspects the fizzy tone etc..
And now you will love it and probably break out into a Judas Priest riff with a big smile.
For Science!!

I have an orgin thought about selling. So I wanted to watch. I have a metal zone in the loop right now. I’m not big on stacking pedals I have a jsx and believe it or not I play on the MG most. And people seem to hate that amp. Lol.
Im hearing some delay and maybe some reverb where is that coming from?
