  • Cranked Marshall Plexi tones on a budget? This amp seems to divide opinion but is it just misunderstood? After watching some great videos by Leon Todd & Robert Baker of the 50w, I thought it was worth the risk to find out. This is my thoughts and favourite tones from the Marshall Origin 20 head! I recently purchased the Or20/Cab combo because the price was unbeatable, it's a Marshall, and the reviews were very favorable!. I'm far from being an expert but I really love this amp! The tilt is a nice along with the presence and gives me a bit wider yet basic sound for my blues and country style. My playing doesn't require more master volume to get where I want so I'm good there. I imagine that this amp with it's matched cab would do great in a live show in a medium to large venue and I guess might sound even better in a stereo set-up. Another plus was that the 4-button foot pedal came with the combo set. I know many of you are more knowledgeable and experienced than I am so it's your comments, reply's, and reviews that assist my decisions so keep sharing knowing that you're comments are being read and thank you! This is my first and only Marshall I've ever owned, and just scored mine tonight for super cheap (300 USD/246Quid), and Origins seem to be anything BUT harsh. People don't like them because they're not very gainy amps which is what Marshalls are known for. We pedal guys love amps like this and it's the very reason I wanted one. Marshalls are not known for high gain at all out of the box. Even a JCM800 is more ACDC than heavy metal. So they all need a boost anyway. Even my DSL is not that high gain. Fully dimed they can be relatively high gain but that's compared to a Fender not anything Mesa like. From the demo this has about as much gain as my DSL401.

Tried my Gretsch through this and got that classic Marshall grit and dirt that I fell in love with from AC/DC. What really got me was how well it cleaned up for a more spanky, Fender-esque jangly clean tone for when I wanted to do some jazz or rockabilly. This was through the MX112R cab, which I believe has the same speaker as the Origin cabs. I loved the sound for sure. I think I found the amp for me.

Great demo! I just put a Marshall Origin 50 combo on lay a way. The easiest way to make this amp an absolute Plexi is get a MXR 10 BAND EQ PEDAL boost the highs and mids, then boost the gain on the pedal a tad bit, that way your amp is still stock, and just use a greenback.

Not sure about the Origin but my DSL likes to have the Master volume on full and preamp us3d to control volume and a boost tondrive the preamp plus boost low end and mids slightly with an EQ in the FX loop. Gets a nice Plexi style sound and this amp is way closer to a Plexi so I think this should work well too, volume near max, gain low, booster before the ampnand an EQ. Most effective in the loop, that lets you really shape the sound. The DSL is a bit shrill and fizzy so I cut the highs and boost the low end. Tube screamer up front.

Just picked one of these. I really value your opinion. Mainly because I agree.😂. Some criticism is based around the idea that the bass is too clubby or there’s too much high end and so forth. I agree with your statement that this is a great amp with a highly interactive tone control. I does take time to get used to. I brought it home and let it sit without turning it on for about a week. I had other obligations. Since then I’ve had time to spend about 20-30 minutes at a time to play with this dude! I believe it’s important to have a couple of gadgets to help you get the most out of it. I have a speaker soak and a pre amp. That way I can crank it up without disrupting my kids from their bedroom gaming experience.😂
The pre amp allows me to have that third boost setting for the ZZ Top/Jake E Lee/EVH sort of thing. So yeah it’s the trendy sort of thing but it’s not a TUBE SCREAMER (touché)!
Lately I’ve been pulling the gain down to 6-7 and the master on 8-9. It’s really amazing how different this is from diming everything on “eleven”. Anyway, hope this helps.
Yeah. Apparently Mikel B is the only person/RUclipsr who understands what a true plexi sounds like 😂(❤ya Mikel!!!). I share as heck don’t. But man this things sounds like a Marshall and a good one at that. Cheers!!!

Hey Dan, I have a origin 20 and love it. I also have a SV20 and I run them wet dry. When you start looking for a "proper" Marshall, check out the SV20, I wouldn't call it budget but much more usable than the big brothers. Got mine for $1000 and it has all the sound and feel of an SLP, doesn't push air like a big ine, but I'm not Bonamassa or Ritchie Faulkner so I can't use amps like that anymore. I'm an old plexi player from the 80's and they feel and sound incredible. Maybe you can get Marshall to send you one. I also just traded for the 2525h Jubilee. The whole studio series is great. Wish the had them 25 years ago, my tinnitus wouldn't be so bad. 🤘👹🤘

Good job, you actually dialed in a solid plexi tone. When it comes to vintage, single channel amps the "more good" knob is the Volume knob. A lot of classic crunch tones are just clean channels played bone crushingly loud. I've seen a lot of Marshall amp demo's that sound terrible simply because they've got the master volume knob at 3. Oy... It's settled then, I'm gonna need to find a practice space outside of the apartment...

I always use the volumes in reverse on Marshalls. Master full, preamp low, boost with pedal, EQ in the loop to take care of any unpleasantness, usually cut/boost highs or lows depending on the amp. They sound way better with the power tubes working hard and the pedal takes care of the pre amp. So unless you can crank it on both volumes always set master near full first and use gain or channel volume as the actual volume control.

I feel like a lot of the other demos of this amp seemed a bit stale and like they were trying really hard to get a good sound. You’re nailing tone easily.
I’m definitely going to grab one of these and probably just ad a pedal in front to kick it a bit more and get a little modified modern tone mixed into it. Then again when you hit that 9:17 mark, it’s pretty damn close to what I’m wanting! Awesome video!

It is refreshing to watch a review where the reviewer has taken into consideration what the amp is actually all about ,, reviewers tend to grab that preamp gain ,, pin it and then complain that it sounds thin ,, spikey ,, boomy ,, wooly whatever ,, here youve made the amp sound like its supposed to ,, its not a silver jubilee,, its not a dsl ,, its not a jcm 800 etc etc etc .. its an origin 20 and it sounds great ! If Marshall was going for a vintage sounding ,, affordable, retro looking amplifier ,,,,voila !!! Awesome review !!

Look here is the deal, Marshalls are VERY sensitive to power delivery, the TSL100 i have sounds glorious on every tenth day (the power from my wall varies from 124v to well below 115v at times, when the power is right the sound is right, when the power is wrong, this and every Marshal I have ever heard sound very wrong (and these later Marshall circuits are really gimnmicked up with garbage, the headfirst mods are basically cleaning the circuit of all the extras, these are what makes the amps sound bad with bad power, so these mods help this phenomena, that is the tack I am presently taking with my TSL,(pulling the circuit gimmicks) and it is working...now it sounds great every day, I just have to goose the front end with an eq), still working on the crunch channel, the lead is perfect!!

As you discovered- Volume is the key with this amp. At full power and master up, it's very good- not as good as actual NMV amps, but it's a lot of bang for the buck and 85% of the way there. At low/mid power and lower master like so many people want to set it, it sounds awful. I run both M20s and M25s with mine and tried a bunch of speakers, but don't overlook a G12H300 55hz , really nice with this amp when it's cranked.

I have a Jubilee 20w and I’ve spent plenty of time in front of “plexi” Marshalls and this is a great amp for the money.
And since there are a lot of these available used based on many people misunderstanding how to use them, you can score one for a great price.
However, it does divide folks but you’d be hard pressed to find that “Marshall” plexi tone for this money in any amp out there right now. 👍🏻

I'm considering getting the Marshall Origin amp to primarily use with pedals. I have a Boss ML-2, HM-2 and an MT-2 pedal, and intend to swap between these pedals for my distortion needs. I do quite like the slight overdrive-ish sound you from the amp get with the gain at the low to medium setting. I really just want a good platform for my pedals, as I want to use pedals to create my sound and also be able to quickly and easily change between effects like clean and distortion. I've heard people say that the Marshall Origin series is great for pedals.

Great review! I own one in the combo format. Indeed, it isn't suitable for bedroom settings. I owned decades ago a 50W head (1973) with the 8X10. This amp gives you a very good impersonation of the real thing. I do not play publicly any more (yep, I'm that old, lol). It can be used at bedroom level on the lowest wattage however, it needs a boost pedal (the EHX LPB1 would do; I use a Danelectro Texas Trouble between the guitar and the amp). But! It won't truly sound like wide open. It'll come close enough if you don't want to acquire a practice amp. After decades of trying practically everything, my at home setup is the Blackstar Debut 10 (must be heard to believe) or through a cab, (a good one makes a big difference), a EHX 5MM pedal amp with your fav pedal. In my case, the very affordable Boss DS-1 works great.

I'v had a bunch of marshall amps & bought this to do something different. I have a 4-12 marshall cab with 100 hundred watt 16 ohm 1970 eminance spk wired to the 16 ohm output. This makes the amp all most imposable to distort making it perfect for pedals in the studio (which is were it lives). I have tried it with a 4-12 20 watt green backs & it does the live marshall thing perfect. just my 2 cents.

I'd like to add a little PSA. A lot of people have reported huge volume losses that comes and goes on the origin amps. If its happening to you, its an easy fix.
More than likely its the blade connectors of the wires from both transformers. The bits attached to the wires that slide onto the blades on the board are made of weak metal, and vibrate/get knocked loose. That shouldn't happen, but remember it IS made in vietnam.
You'll need to crimp those bits as tightly to the blades as possible.
An even more permanent solution would be to solder the wires directly to the blades.
I had to do this back in March. I couldn't go more than 20 minutes without a volume drop. Once I heard loud electric arcing. But since I did that, no more volume drops, no odd occurrences. Works exactly as it should.

I use one as my main amp and have it running through a two notes captor x with an oversized mesa rectifier cab running to front of house, and it runs through a cheap marshall 4x12 for my stage volume.
I do however disagree with the comment on the effects loop. Yes you are driving the power tubes a bit but thay doesn't seem to muddy the time based effects as much as going straight into the front end.

The key to getting this amp to sound more like an old Marshall is the right speaker choice . The stock speakers in the combos are not the best match for these amps both the 20 and the 50 sound much better with a higher power handling G12M25 variant or G12H30 variant like a creamback M65 or H75 . WGS Reaper HP or one of the higher power Scumback G12M or G12H variants. The G12H variants are a great choice because they have a tighter more defined low end which will keep the Wooliness at bay The H variants also have great H end clarity and plenty of mids . People call G12H30 and H variants mid scooped but I have newer found this to be the case . Sure they have less mids compared to M speakers but they are still far from mid scooped and they really don't even have less mids is just with H30 speakers and their variants the mid focus is shifted higher. A H will have more upper mids compared to an M while the M has more lower mids .
I have seen people call even the Creamback M65 mid scooped but it has huge mids its just that it's a little rolled back in the upper mids while having huge lower mids . My favorite combo currently is Creamback M65 paired with a vintage 30 . You get the V30 upper mids with M65 lower mids and the sound is huge.
