    I have an identical head. Im very happy with mine. I find that having the boost engaged but backing the gain off until its similar to the gain maxed with boost off, gives the best assimilation it offers of a superlead. Its like the typical 'bright cap' sound with the boost on. Leaving the boost off seems rounder and less aggressive. Despite just having less break up; almost like the bright cap mod on an original plexi. I really think these amps are slept on. If you lust after a plexi, but either dont have the budget for one, or just wish they were more usuable, do /not/ rule out an origin amp!!

    Great amp! BTW...one of the things about you that I love to watch is your right hand. It's one of the most relaxed looking hands I've seen. It'd be great if you made a video about just that...how to keep it relaxed, even when you're playing faster or with more energy.

    because it's a single channel amp with a pull-boost gain knob, the 2 switch pedal has a Gain-boost on/off button that does the same as the pull knob and the other one is the fx loop on/off button instead of reverb button for example. Therefore the fx loop only works when that footswitch is plugged in and switched on. Even the manual says that. oh, and don't think of the footswitch connection on the amp as an 'output' because it isn't. No audio signal goes to the footswitch. It's just a connection for the switch buttons. on, or off. 👍 cheers!

    I have an Origin 50 I bought used a few years ago. Since then, I bought a 100W JCM800, so I've pondered selling the 50, but I've been somewhat convinced to keep it. The amps can do different things, which is more or less how I've approached amp collecting over the past few years.
    Good to know about the effects loop being interlocked with the foot switch. I'll have to remember that.

    I'm not an amp expert but more than likely it has to do with power drain. Most fx loops have a pad on them to compensate for possible volume increases from fx. It has a lot to do with whether the loop is parallel or series as well. So especially back in the day if you wanted your amp to be a little louder you would just use a small connector cable to patch the fx loop to increase the output on the amp. Kind of the way people would patch the front of the amp hi low inputs on old plexis and Hi-watts. So this was probably a stop gap solution to that, that if you aren't "using" the fx loop you get the extra volume output from the bypass.
    But for everyone reading if you have an fx loop and you don't use it, plug in a small pedal patch cable and you might be able to get yourself a few extra DB boost. Especially if it's an older amp.
    This is just a guess as to why the origin works this way.

      People will often "bag" something they don't understand. When the origin line came out, it was really misunderstood, but I think it's now getting the credit it deserves. I have a 20h and using an attenuator allows me to get that Marshall sound and keep my hearing.

    • @Birkguitars
      @Birkguitars Год назад +4

      Agree. When I finally got around to buying a Marshall I put the 50w Origin against the 40w DSL. I ended up with the DSL because it offered more flexibility which suited what I was doing at the time but the Origin was sweet. The bad reviews I read on it all seemed to be criticising it for what it wasn't rather than reviewing what it is. It isn't a JCM or a Plexi and it isn't an amp that takes massive amounts of gain but it has an amazing sweet spot just past the edge of break up. When the sales assistant came back to me to see how I was getting on I admitted that I had entered the shop asking the wrong question. I went in thinking "which do I buy, the DSL or the Origin". Playing them I realised that I should have been asking "which do I buy FIRST".

    I don’t know; to me an on/off for the fx loop makes total sense. Just turning off all the pedals in the loop still leaves all that circuitry/cables etc. in the signal chain, vs being able to bypass the whole thing and have the signal go direct as if there’s nothing in the loop.

    I had the same issue with the effects loop on my JTM60. It would cause the sound to cut out when the amp started to heat up. I’ve read it’s a common problem on my model. Guessing there’s something wrong with the connection, but it’s fixable by connecting the in and out of the fx loop with a patch cable.

    • @alangreenway6695
      @alangreenway6695 Год назад

      @@stoneysdead689 As far as I can tell when it gets hot, the connector or switch in the fx out thinks something is connected to it and routes the signal out into an fx loop, whether it has something connected or not. Completing the circuit solves the problem. It’s not perfect, but then it’s a 28 year old amp that has issues with overheating in general. I’ve had it 26 years and only recently I figured out how to fix it. I also put in an aluminium plate to shield the electrics from the valves a while back- the valves are directly below the circuit boards. Great sounding amp but badly designed.

    Subjectively, I like the Marshall plexi tone. The amp itself, I prefer watching other people plug into it and don’t have the temptation to get one for myself. I’ll stick with emulations indefinitely.

    Years ago i had a JCM 900 and the tubes were always screwing up especially when i took it out for a gig ironically lol Plus it just didnt have enough juice for me so i traded it for a Marshall solid state combo amp and it was great. Then subsequently at a gig i was drunk and knocked it over and now i dont play anymore so whatever. But you're a great guitar player dude i enjoy your videos

    I assume it's a bypassable effects loop? I prefer them because it doesn't effect the tone the way a normal one does (when it's bypassed), which is a lot.
    I haven't seen any of these amps insides of schematics though, so I'm just guessing.

    You remind me of the other guitar player who was in my band in the mid 70's. he used to get so stoked out on Mississippi Queen, the other one that stoked him out was if I put on a Roy Buchanan Record. If he was older I would have asked him to see if he Peed his pants, it was so funny. Oh HE flipped the 1st time I put on an old Albert KING record. LOL.
