Recently I came across this video of a concrete mix that will make your statue weatherproof. I have used it in several of my recent projects and I’m very satisfied with the outcome.
This recipe is curtesy of the following individual and I give him all of the credit he deserves for putting out this amazing video.

Just wanted to say I used the paint brush idea to smooth out the concrete and that works so well and would have never thought of using a paint brush on my own.

Yessss that’s awesome!!! Yeah the brush makes everything super smooth. Sometimes you just have to be a little patient with it.

Love the idea of using the metal mesh as a base. Other methods I have seen use a cardboard shell covered with tinfoil. I have also used the cardboard idea along with foam board and then covered that with water proof wood glue instead of using tinfoil. The main thing I have heard is you need to make sure whatever the frame is that it does not take moisture away from the concrete. I've been experimenting with a mixture I found on the youtube channel ultimate paper mache. It is a combination of cement, toilet paper, pva glue (elmers) and joint compound (any brand but Dap). I liked the way it works and is very similar to clay; but if there is too much moisture in the toilet paper (and it is really hard to get the right amount of moisture) it can cause the concrete to bubble as it setups. So the next mixture I tried was replacing the toilet paper with sand. This works pretty good but can be too soft depending on what one is making. My next mixture to try is with paper instead of toilet paper and putting and leaving out the sand. I like what you are doing and it looks great; but prefer to be able to buy all my supplies at the local hard ware store if I don't have the materials myself such as the paper. Here is a tip of those who can't get a 95lb of cement into their vehicle. Buy buckets with lids and split the bag up out in the parking lot. I did this and it makes it so much easier to get the cement home. Same goes for the sand if the bag is too big.

Thank you so much for you detailed response. You bring up some great ideas that I have to research. I’m not sure how using tissue paper will work other than to fill in the base of the project but for the surface it might get very difficult to smooth out. As for the mixture that I now use, I found it on RUclips. The gentleman who put it out lives in Illinois and has been using it for many years. He said that for at least 10 years your concrete will not crack or show any sign of wear and tear. Check out my description for the recipe and the website to buy all of the products. Your input is much appreciated ❤️

@@artsandcraftchica I saw the video before that the gentleman made showing how he makes the concrete and it was impressive. You did a great job by providing links to buy the harder to find materials; but for me I would rather use materials that I can buy locally. The lady over at ultimate paper mache goes over how you make the concrete using toilet paper. The finished product probably needs to be sealed and I say probably because the mixture has not really been fully tested yet as far as leaving outside she mentions that. I have done some experimenting and so far soaking the finished product in water and letting it dry out doesn't seem to cause any problems. Found some waterproof joint compound and waterproof wood glue, that are most expensive than non waterproof products, that I may try at some point to see how it stands up to being outside since it would not need to be sealed. I am working on making a Japanese torii gate with the cement, sand, pva glue, and regular joint compound and I am not going to seal it and leave it outside and see how it works in the southern heat etc. If you want to see the mixture that I found look on youtube for ultimate paper mache and she shows how she used it and how to make it; but I would recommend using paper over toilet paper. You're probably right that using the toilet paper mixture could work as a base or maybe when you need to do something that will hold more detail. Using the toilet paper mixture as a base could also work if you want to first do a scratch coat and come back later with how your doing it. Would think that it would not go through the metal mesh as easily. Perhaps consider also covering the mesh with tinfoil first? If nothing else having more than one concrete mixture as an option could be useful depending on what one is making. Using this mixture for that project and that mixture of this project etc. There is another video I found where this guy makes 6 foot tall Easter island heads made from concrete that he spreads over these cardboard structures he puts together. The finished product weighs 300 lbs. Just thought I would add some additional information with my long explanation :)
