Everybody bitching about flanger/no flanger, doesn't matter really. This guy plays the tune pretty darn close, that's all I need to know. Good job man!
jakenastysnake Not as if Frusciante ever played it the same way live. This gives a great foundation for John's Hendrixy flourishes. The flange was probably used in the album cut, but live he uses the chorus on quite a few things. The version he used back then has a vibrato effect to it that sounds flangey when mixed right. This and the outro for Sir Psycho are two of my favorite rhythm parts ever.
Any one watching this its a dod fx65 chorus Frusciante used, with a delay time knob that allows you get get flangey in between flange and chorus tones.
Heard this song recently and it’s still a flanger to me! I have a CE-1 it’s much faster and pitch warping. It could have even been studio flanger. Thanks for watching!
I think about this video and the ongoing chorus vs flanger argument in the comments every so often. I’ve also been trying to nail this tone for years now. Without question there is some sort of flanging going on. Whether it is a pedal or actual studio tape flange the world may never know. I’m not sure if John himself could even tell you at this point. Nevertheless every time I watch this video I’m reminded of how accurate your depiction of his tone is in this lesson. Thanks Andy
Seriously thank you for this man. You are a great teacher and make hard songs easy and you play them beautifully and correctly I appreciate all you do man. Seriously thank you!!! Best tutorial on youtube!!!!
Dam dude, that was the easiest laid out riff video I've ever seen. Very tough song made simple and slowed down and I learned it quickly from your video. Great job and I might have a few ideas if ur OK with requests. I watch alot of videos like these, and that was by far the clearest. Thanks..
Love these riff of the day thingies!...the tones of the respective guitarists are nailed on and Andy's playing as smooth as ever. Another great job, keepem comin!
If I could give this 5 thumbs up, I would. Really excellent tutorial. If other people put half this level of detail into their tutorials, the world would be so much better! :) Thank you!
You're right about most everything there but he did use the chorus effect on his guitar parts. He used the DOD chorus on SEVERAL songs on that album. In fact it's all over the album. Only a couple songs where chorus wasn't used and I don't think it was all done post recording. Especially on songs like Suck My Kiss and Naked In The Rain. He also went directly into the board on a lot of songs as well, especially for overdubs.
Only think I would do differently is for the intro, where you've got the third open A I would play that twice, really quickly, not sure what you would call the technique but yeah so instead of A) 0 D)2h4 G) 2 it would be A) 00 D)2h4 G) 2
Sounds wonderful Andy! I think the flanger is a bit much. Maybe it was just the setting but it had that big hollow sound that just isn't there on the recording. I definitely think it was a chorus but it could work either way. And besides you nailed the actual guitar part. It was perfect!
just listened again..it's very metallic like a creeping flanger. The CE-1 might do this at the slowest setting but to my ears it has always been flange. Probably studio effects for all we know!
Total Hendrix derivative, except nowhere near as mind blowing or interesting. The soulfull chord melody thing Hendrix did on tunes like Little Wing or Axis Bold as Love 10000000x better.
@@primeDecomposition really not even worth a reply, if you can't appreciate one of the greatest guitarists of recent generations I don't have much to say to you
a big part of a car's "image" is the visual apperance and the level of maintenance.. a guitar is made to be played till it's soul dies.. and scratches are what, usually, means just that
John was also using Marshall JMPs back then which have that sparkly almost chorus sound when they're super clean. I have a very similar amp and it nails the Blood Sugar tones.
Patina. Some people call it patina on cars. Especially if the car is old, and cool, a lot of people value the paint and body in it's original unrestored condition. So there's a bit of Stevie Ray's axe going on in car circles.
He actually used a DOD stereo chorus on the album. I know he uses a chorus live and I can get it REAL close with a chorus but this track could have been done with some flanging after it was recorded, or maybe it was a chorus. That's the thing about the studio. You can never be entirely positive unless you were there haha. Trust me.
Probably not. They're not claiming any ownership or really making any money off of the intellectual property. They're doing this as a guitar lesson for a very popular song and you can find that in many places over the internet.
Nope. Any chorus on the song was added after he recorded it. I've read several interviews where he claims the only pedals he used on BSSM were a Big Muff and a WH-10. He split his signal to two Marshalls using a DOD stereo chorus pedal (but didn't use the chorus effect). The only Fender amp used on the album was an old H.O.T. practice amp.
A little late, don't know if you still need this: but I'll show you. Go to the 8th fret on the 2nd string from the top (A string). That note is called F. Now make a power chord with F (with F as the root note), so like this: e-------------- B-----10------ G-----10------ D-----10------ A------8------- E---------------
ProGuitarShopDemos although John did use a chorus pedal throughout the recording of this album (and not a flanger to my knowledge), I think you guys are correct that there is a flange effect on this particular song. I wouldn't be surprised if it was done from the board rather than an actual pedal.
Error in bar 2. There is no 3rd open A or "0". Not in the original recording, nor when Andy demonstrates it here. So effectively Andy is playing it properly, just ignore the third open A "0" in the on screen tab.
that "A" on the 3rd fret. fuck if i care the name of the chord. lol. soooooo illusive. couldn't figure that out. was making it way more complicated than necessary. 1 finger! really. Oh Frusciante you bastard. lol. thanks for this. i usually find songs on accident, or at least the intros and work on figuring them out myself and got pretty far until that 3rd fret A. soo yeah thanks
you pretty much use your middle finger to bend the low e string down on the first note after you hit it. You bend the low e string down by hitting the note and then pulling the string down with your middle finger while you let it sustain. hit the second note 2 strings down. and then repeat the first step. I don't know if that was a good explanation but i tried.
I love how you don't play everything "too slow". It's perfect for people who are far from beginner, but not super pro
It's really perfect

There's a reason this guy has a video on YT and all those others complaining are in the comments section instead.
@Your Name yeah I think it's the CE-1. I have a MIJ CE-2 and it sounds identical to what John uses
It’s a boss ce-1 chorus. Not a flanger
of all the SOUL lesson's here.. YOURS was FULL of SOUL!.
Man,thanks a lot, your lessons are great and its help me to grow up my poor skills,my english is not very good, but thanks a lot, from Brazil.

Just got one on Reverb, hope this works!
That’s not what John used at all, it was a boss chorus pedal
@@raymondwalker8794 during the BSSM recording session his CE-1 broke and he actually used the DOD FX65 on the record.
Paul Rudd teaching guitar lessons, bravo for him!
HIS NAME IS ANDY!!!!
Everyone has a friend who looks like this guy.
paul Rudd mixed with a lil charlie sheen
Was thinking more like one of the guys from Weekend at Bernies.

There's a few people who put a lot more detail and walk you through the notes, chords, etc.
sometimes that could be too much detail taking away from the song idk, i like this guy
Not that I'd need it since it's fairly easy to see, I like that you guys added tab. Excellent work as always!
wow, thats the perfect way to teach songs, been looking for this. GREAT!
Fantastic, Andy Your a champion. Thanks for taking the time to do that. I would have never bothered to work it all out. Great Mellow song.
Wow thank you so much, took me half an hour on my acoustic one, such a great tutorial
Beautifully done. Closest to the recording tone, I've heard.
again a song from my favourite band!thanks Andy, you rock!
Thank you for this. I love the "La Cigale" live version too.
The flux capacitor John used is a receiver in the overflapper

John did in fact use a boss CE 1 chorus and a fender twin reverb to record this song.
It's very cool that you guys are doing these lessons.

would've helpful to tab out the power chords with captions
Sam Gladwish there are no power chords. You mean the barre chords?
the intro is a A power chord
that amp sounds great
great lesson! Wow!
great tone

Was the compressor placed before or after the Electric Mistress?
okay, so verse starts with F, Csus2 but I still got a question. Are your fingers oiled or shoeshined?
what pedal will you advice to get kind'a plexi sound, like frusciante, hendrix?
I know that there is a lovepedal amp 50 what do you think?
What happened to Free Pedal Friday ? The Facebook page has not been updated in almost a month. Are you guys doing away with the pedal giveaway?
F (Open E) It's kinda hard to do. Thanks Pro
better than the original \o/
Does your fret board have **any** red streaks? It looks so dark im wondering if it's even rosewood, lol

agreed. .. imagine seeing a 2013 aston martin, being distressed so it gets a vintage look.
The deluxe has a filter matrix in it anyway, so you can still get chorus out of the pedal. Snobs haha!
My next request will be Let There Be Rock by AC/DC.

Chorus not flanger
Really sounds like flanger. The delay time is shorter.

you know, the guitar for this song was done by Dave Navarro not John Frusciante.
LOL! this song was recorded within the BSSM recordings...but they (probably Rick Rubin) decided not to put this track on the album.
