I've trained in martial arts, mainly Okinawan karate, a bit of BJJ for over 52 years. Next week I start my first boxing training. I'm really excited about the idea of not just blocking punches but slipping them too and creating angles. I'm 68 and can't quite get it done like I used to but I'm still excited about starting this. I tend to stay in close but regardless this drill is a great idea.
@@JJDogz Thanks for asking. So far so good. Alot of it feels natural to me and if Precision Striking is reading this I wouldn't mind an opinion on it. In karate we throw punches keeping our shoulders squared, or at least not extending our punch all the way out. In boxing they seem to throw punches with their shoulders extended all the way. Even though after all these years of karate I've thrown I'm sure hundreds of thousands of punches I've never had shoulder pain but now I'm having shoulder pain because of the difference in the ways the 2 arts throw punches. Is this something that my body will get used to, am I doing something wrong (my coach hasn't noted anything to correct in my punches so far)? Any thoughts from you JuicyJulian or Precision Striking?
@@shevetlevi2821 I’ve been doing boxing/ mma for about 4 years and the shoulder pain could be from throwing those punches fully extended with a lot of force in it I wouldn’t recommend extending all the way out if there’s pain, also could be from bag work especially throwing with power and such. Very interesting. Just completed my first week in a boxing gym. Had my second body sparring session today and with 30 seconds remaining I felt like I was going to cry. I couldn't let my hands go, and basically just felt like a punching bag. I held back the tears and soldiered on, finishing the session. I've been feeling quite frustrated because of this. There's something mentally holding me back from actually pressing forward and boxing. I realize I've only been in an actual boxing gym for a week but I know I have it in me to do better. There was a brief moment on the ride home where I questioned whether boxing was for me. Whether I actually have what it takes. I don't have the answer but all I know is I'm not quitting. In this sport you will get hit. You will face resistance and it is up to you to decide whether to face it or whether to give up. There's very few things in my life that I've felt as passionate about as boxing. I'm 27 and for the past year I've been obsessed with this sport and have been taking steps to achieve my goal of doing (at least) one amateur fight. This might seem like a small goal but understanding how tough the sport is, it feels like a respectable target. I feel very humbled by how demanding the sport of boxing is. I just wanted to say that it helps so much having the wealth of knowledge that Precision Striking offers available at the click of a button. I train in Muay Thai but these videos are still useful because when we spar we also have to get inside and do punches. The only difference is that we kick, elbow and knee so we also spar kickboxing style so we just kick and there is more opportunity to get inside and box.
@@actcanine5277 thanks for asking bro I was doing well up until the end of May. My new trainers spotted I had previously boxed soon as I got in my stance and started shadowboxing. Don’t be a punching bag spar with ppl on the same level as you or one level higher….Sparring ppl 2 or 3 levels higher than you isn’t smart especially if the guy looking for a knockdown Guys like that spar lower level guys to make themselves feel good
Honestly the main reason why I get anxious/ nervous is because I’m always sparring with different people. People I’ve NEVER seen or sparred with before so I don’t know what to expect, I don’t know how long they’ve been in the game for or how they fight.
Stay relaxed and focused forward, get comfortable being under fire. Then as you get comfortable start to understand the rhythm and counter punching opportunities.
Started boxing for an event 6 weeks ago. Got 5 more weeks left and always get nervous about sparring, did 12 minute rounds on Monday and I always just freeze (I spa some bigger people) trying to get used to being punched is hard, I don’t mind the pain but I frustrate myself because I don’t throw enough
About to do my 3rd sparing session today I realized that I’ve been running away to much before and draining my stamina I’m gonna try to do what I learned from this video this time
Hey JT, great training drill here. As a beginner, how do you deal with that "new person, ineffective half way offense and defense" mode sort of thing? I find myself trying to close distance with taller opponents (I'm 5"7) and trying to slip long jabs and then when I get close, they just back up and keep firing or they sit there and counter as soon as I go to punch. It feels like I can't win either way - I either get hit trying to move in or I try to hit them and get hit anyway. Hence the halfway defense on the way in. Loving your stuff!
Learn how to cut off the ring you always have to out pressure in the center of the ring so you have control (ringeneralship) slowly step in but bring your lead foot foward without bring your whole upperbody so that way you push them back little by little, take ur time
I’m always afraid if I hit too hard. Like, when I try to be faster, power just kinda comes with that. Like, I don’t really care all that much if anyone hits me hard, since it’s not on me
Hello coach, I am a beginner and I am a small guy, I always lose in spar because i always spar agaisnt bigger and taller guys. I am scared of punches I often blinked and I cant counter punches even when I successfully slip and change angle.
When I spar I don't aim to compete with my partner, I aim to get better. It's a very important distinction.
Agreed, you can’t have an ego.
damn this is good advice thanks man
I'm new to Boxing...and I follow this too. Maybe that's why I get punched more than my opponent does.

Offense or defence, there is no in between
Man l learn alot from you Coach
Solid advice. 51 this year, 30 years of boxing and still sparring but getting more and more gunshy as I get older
I got sparring tommorow this stress could kill a animal 😢
i hear you
About to do my 3rd sparing session today I realized that I’ve been running away to much before and draining my stamina I’m gonna try to do what I learned from this video this time
Be patient with it, over a few sparring sessions you'll see the difference as your skill with it gets better.
@@PrecisionBoxing I’ve done around 10 sparing sessions now and I’ve can definitely see improvement your video been helping to man
Great video ❤️
Can you post a new video on switching stance whole punching and throwing double right hand
Premium content as always
I'd be scares if your rocking them casanivas when sparring!!! Amazing gloves
Learn how to cut off the ring you always have to out pressure in the center of the ring so you have control (ringeneralship) slowly step in but bring your lead foot foward without bring your whole upperbody so that way you push them back little by little, take ur time
You don't know how bad I want to become a professional boxer now adays.
Brilliant
1:39 Made me laugh, I started sparing with a group of beginners recently, and this is exactly how everyone, including myself looks.
Kkkkk 😂😂
this is my issue thanks man
I’m always afraid if I hit too hard.
Most powerful advice👊🏻
someone once said "if you're gonna jump in water, you're gonna get wet. If you're gonna box, you're gonna get hit."
Nice gloves
