    This premium market is so overkill on the pricing it's actually ridiculous. Like you said, a 2k laptop not giving AT LEAST 1/2 TB of storage is ridiculous, especially when you're advertising a machine for editing videos and the like which I can only assume takes a gigantic amount of space. I actually think the premium non gaming laptop market is so disconnected with what's important or not (at least for the 13 inch models) that it makes me not even want to consider it (for example the xps 17 can cost you around 2k+ but since we're on this price range, it will come with a much better graphics card and none of that 2 in 1 BS that microsoft keeps trying to pull off

    • @alexgilder1
      @alexgilder1 4 года назад +2

      I shopped for a new laptop a couple of months ago and just couldn't justify most of the 'premium' ultrabooks in the £1000-1500 price bracket. I ended up getting a Lenovo S540 with a Ryzen 7 3750H, really nice 2560x1600 screen, 512GB NVME SSD and all metal build quality is really great. I can get around 7-9 hours battery life doing work and it comfortably plays the 4X strategy games I like and some older AAA titles. The only downside is soldered 8GB of RAM but at £630 can I really complain? With the new IdeaPads with Ryzen 4000 is there really much point in buying a more 'premium' laptop?

    • @dante93nero
      @dante93nero 4 года назад +1

      @@alexgilder1 I agree 100%. The only reason the new AMD laptops arent getting more praise is because of this same logic that I'm pointing out, meaning their used a MUCH cheaper chip (probably even cheaper considering n1 is using it) and yet they make a budget laptop with mega obvious downsides. The g14 is also another good example of this, the laptop is good, yes, but I've hear that the screen is garbage and it runs 2 hot (don't have one so I don't know). At this price range you're better off running an actual Tablet like the IPAD pro which is putting out some serious performance and its as portable as you can get with this form factor. For 2000$ I'd rather buy a desktop and get actual performance tbh.

      Some people find the 2 in 1 form factor super useful. As a student who does digital note taking, I find it absolutely crucial. Just because you specifically don't use it doesn't make it bs.

    You are forgetting the fact that the Surface Book dosn't get warm below the keyboard part at your lap because the cpu is located in the screen part. This makes the Surface Book the most comfortable laptop when used on the lap. Yes, it's thicker than most other premium laptops but the lack of heat is a winner compared to almost every other laptop.

  • @hasseygolf
    @hasseygolf 4 года назад +1

    For what it's worth... my need is unique. I'm a golf-instructor in San Diego that uses video in all my lessons. I would use SB3's tablet during giving lessons on the range, so (without the keyboard) I could film my student's swings and use analysis software (like CoachesEye or Technique) during the lesson on the tablet, but then later, be able to attach it to the key-board/graphics-card to edit the previously taken videos and email the lesson recap videos to the people I work with. But again I know my use is very unique. I currently use an iPad Pro, but I think the SB3 would help. I just thought I'd share how I'd use it since it seems very on-point for what I do, and would use it for. That being said, I too wish the bezels were thinner. I have a Dell XPS-13 that I also use (at home) and love the infinity edge. But it wouldn't be practical to use the Dell on-site. 👍

    Not sure it is fair comparing a SB3 with a XPS 13 as the GPU on the SB3 will warp the results. Like with like as best you can, because if I needed that GPU power then the XPS 13 would not be on my radar. Interestingly we could compare the XPS 15, with a 512gb SB3 as they are closer in price than the review samples, and the XPS 15 is closer in footprint as well. Then, solely as laptops, the XPS 15 would be my choice. Of course if you need the detachable tablet, then again an XPS 2-in-1 or similar will be the alternatives rather than the XPS 13/15.
    I think very few buyers will have these two above spec machines in their short lists as they are not very comparable.

    Dell hands down.
    A note for anyone who wants to get a surface book:
    1. The tablet component is essentially useless as battery life is trash.
    2. Models without GPU suck. They lag and are slow. Even multitasking lags.
    3. Models with 8GB ram are extremely slow even for basic tasks such as Microsoft word/excel.
    4. Design isn't convenient - You either have a tablet or a laptop, you can't have both like a Surface Pro 7.
    At this point, you are spending $3000+ on a 2 in 1 (16GB ram and GPU model) which is just not worth it.
    Just buy an iPad and a Dell XPS 13 if you want to have the best of both worlds :D
    2 in 1s are not for everyone.

    • @Dare2Blink
      @Dare2Blink 4 года назад +3

      Amazing everything you said is wrong... You are completely clueless : 1. Tablet part is great for meeting, showing photos or projects to clients and to chill on the couch and browse the Web.
      2. False... And if was true the same would be true for other laptops without gpu since the surface book has much better thermals and less throttling.
      3. No models with 8 Gb of ram are definitely not slow, and most definitely not slow for PowerPoint or excel (how do you make this shit up).
      4. What you said is illogical. Of course you can have either a laptop or a tablet, you can even have tent mode which has the best of both worlds.
      Please stop lying to everyone. I have a SB2 15 inch and of course they are not for everyone, they are expensive but for professionals that need a convertible that supports a pen and has a powerful gpu, it is pretty much one of a kind, especially if you use it detached.

    Until Dell, Apple, HP, or LG can put a graphics card into their 13inch laptops, the Surface Book 3 13in is really in a class of its own in terms of performance.
    Those significant performance differences aren't something you can just excuse on a laptop just because it's smaller and it has slimmer bezels.
    The Surface Book 3 13in still remains one of the most versatile machines on the market. If anything, this Dell XPS is probably more comparable to a Surface Laptop 3 in terms of performance

    The detachable screen on the SurfaceBook is a just a gimmick really. The reason for this, is that the OS isn't really geared to be a tablet based OS yet. It's really clunky in tablet mode and windows scaling for many applications doesn't work properly. The detachable screen is just a nice party trick, but that's about it. The only real thing the SurfaceBook has going for it is that the higher tier models have discrete graphics.

    I would rather buy Yoga Slim 7 i7 version. Metal body, has 1 thunderbolt but still keep hdmi and USB type A. Same 16GB of lpddrx ram, 1TB fast Read and Write SSD. Use the same i7-1065G7+Iris Plus and also has nVidia MX350. The eGPU isn't the best, but it's enough help the graphic performance and battery life for slim product. And come in much much cheaper price.

      Pointless asking this! Ask yourself instead, which one suits your needs better or which one pleases your eyes and heart the most? I am leaning towards to Dell but their customer service is terrible if something goes wrong, not sure about other brands customer service as I have not checked yet.

    Thanks for posting great content and making it easy to understand. As way of background, I would appreciate your assistance. Having worked in a management consultancy business for a number of years I am about to set up my own management consultancy business. This will include executive coaching, leadership training, organisational design and structure operating models and a bunch of other training both F2F and digital. There will also be client presentations, however most of the prep work etc will be done from home on this device. I am now looking for a new Lap top and was thinking of the XI Carbon generation 8 or 7 and the Microsoft Surface lap top 3 with the i7. Also deciding between a 13' and 15' screen. Could I kindly obtain your recommendation on a lap top that would last me say 3-5 years. Many thanks, Keith

    But the Dell doesn't come with a discrete GPU right? As such can you really compare considering discrete GPU is really the purpose of Book 3.

    Unless you want a janky dell driver/software update app popping up on your screen every 8 hours, go with the surface. You can delete the dell update app but then good luck checking for driver updates via windows. Dell never sends their driver updates to the windows server so you have to go to the dell support website, equally janky, and download and install yourself. Surface is as close to an Apple one place for all needs experience as you can get.

    If the SB3 had (at least) a black keyboard and bezel shrink it would be competitive. I'm typing this on a 9300 configured with "4K" touch, 1TB and 32GB RAM. The 1TB SSD was replaced with a 970 Pro 1TB. Paid $1700 for it total. SB3 pricing is ridiculous. It has a GPU but I don't need a GPU and if I did with the 9300 it has TB3 (Microsoft where's yours? :P) and can use a E-GPU so there's that...
    The speakers on the 9300 are definitely better than the 9370 but nowhere near 2019 MBP...
    And webcam, don't use it, never have, never will so no opinion. Isn't that was phones are for? :P
    Oh and the 9300 does run "hot as hell" on lap while running something that pegs the CPU...

    Well the XPS 13 will have coil whine, which is impossible to live with, and now Dell have introduced a widespread "wobbly trackpad" issue (according to Dave2D) so I'd just go with something that's built properly, like a MacBook Pro.
    Dell have had 8 years to get the XPS right, but instead they've introduced yet more quality control issues. There's no excuse for a poorly built laptop being sold at premium prices.

    • @IsiahHD

      Considering Dell (and many other brands) still hasn't been able to chuck a dGPU in one of these laptops, is the design of the XPS13 REALLY better than the SB3? Or do you base mobile computing designs on the size of a screen bezel? 🤔

    • @NicolaMastrandrea
      @NicolaMastrandrea 4 года назад

      idh0530 why would I need to have a dGPU in such a small and thin laptop? Windows should get better eGPU support so that we can use eGPU with these machines. Of course that’s my opinion.

    • @IsiahHD
      @IsiahHD 4 года назад +1

      @@NicolaMastrandrea Not everyone wants to carry a 15inch laptop or bigger just to have good graphics power. The fact that Microsoft is able to stuff a GTX1650 in this, an i7 that can boost upwards of 20W, still keep it cool, and still have enough battery life to get you through a work day is extremely impressive. That's much more of an impressive design feat than Dell shrinking the bezels on its XPS line.
      eGPUs haven't caught on and probably never will. It's a VERY niche product. Much more niche than what these tech reviewers would lead you to believe.

    • @NicolaMastrandrea
      @NicolaMastrandrea 4 года назад

      idh0530 But what are you gonna do with a dGPU on a 13”? I have it on a 15” and every time I need to do something GPU intensive or play some game the fan starts to skyrocket and the machine is barely usable. And when you cut AC the TDP is getting down to make the thing even less usable. I think we should get better iGPU and the future should be eGPU all in. Microsoft managed to put a dGPU there since there is only a dGPU and battery on the base while the CPU is on another place. That’s being more chunkiness and weight. The two machines as concern portability are totally different.

    • @IsiahHD
      @IsiahHD 4 года назад +2

      @@NicolaMastrandrea Having a dGPU will always be better than using the iGPU in terms of performance because it will take the load off of the CPU. Data Servers, Video rendering and Encoding, Image Processing, 3D Graphics Design and Artwork, Gaming, Coding, Mining Cryptocurrency. Once CPUs get hot, it leaves the system susceptible to damaging other components.
      I thought this was basic computing 101. Maybe you missed the part of the video where the Surface Book 3 destroyed the Dell in a 10 minute video render and was cooler while doing so.
