I remember seeing Slayer live in 1989...and this song starting their set...5000 kids in a warehouse in Florida moving side to side and then failing over on top of each other and me being buried and stepped on and fighting to stand up...I finally did...it was hot as hell and me at 18 looking up and seeing a female security guard between me and the stage and her eyes being as big as saucers...she was afraid and I could see the fear in her eyes...this was hell and I loved every second of it!!!

I saw them in upstate NY Nov 2, 1988. I still have the ticket stub. Imagine you are 16 years old and your first concert ever is Overkill opening for co-headliners Motorhead and Slayer. Not sure about your show but for mine, the whole place went black. You couldn't see a thing. Then you hear that opening riff, over and over in the darkness. It felt like forever that we were in the darkness getting more and more hyped. Suddenly a green spotlight comes on and there's King standing alone playing the riff. I have never felt that tension buildup in any of the hundreds of concerts I went to after that. Talk about the best possible initiation into decades of metal concerts that still continues to this day. In fact, I'm on my way to see In This Moment with Motionless In White tomorrow night. Not quite the same energy as a vintage Slayer show but metal will be in my blood until they put me in the ground.

'South of Heaven' (the album) came in 1988 after the groundbreaking speed of Slayer's 1986 opus 'Reign in blood'... Rather than attempt another blitz of speed, Slayer opted to tune down, reorganize and deliver the metal... Initially, fans were disappointed w/ the lack of shredding speed, but 'South of Heaven' actually outsold 'Reign in blood'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥
Jeff Hanneman (Slayer's late founding guitarist) was credited for writing most of the music for the album, and it was another triumph creatively for Slayer as a force in extreme metal.

They come out of retirement when old Jeff Heineken himself bites a fuckin' spider, kills it, and swaps places when Harvey Keitel is busy servicing old Adolph with his daily Pineapple headed 'In Thru The Out Door.' (no, Dolphie, that's not size "Super Small', Lightning edition.
All I know is that when that Heini label curtain drops on the darkened stage, and the thunder clap and and lightning flashes illuminate the green and white tinged silhouette, next to the tatted bald dome is gonna be some long flowing blonde strands of sonic perfection, blasting the portal closed on the fuckin' spider, (even with Rob Schneider yelling "You can DO it"), and sealing the deal with none other than "Bat-Man" himself officiating the swap-out (that is, after The Fonz yells "Ayyyyyeeeeeeeee" in bee stinging agony, while Jeff blasts the back ground riff to this:
      ruclips.net/video/1WBLiitrpSg/видео.htmlsi=dgeOuEV5fxMlyJgV
Because, really, fuckerz.....a spider bite? While that may be Metal as fuck and all, it is NOT enough to keep the Heini away from the Mann. (if we can't Hassel the Hoff, this rule must apply as well. I have spoken.)
My homie had VIP tix for me to the very last show in SoCal and a Southwest Airlines ticket to fly us spur of the moment from San Jose to LAX as my Birthday surprise. (Apparently he forgot I was in the Air Force and that spur of the moment shit don't fly with the Commander and 1st Sergeant unless you got them Tix too.) At dawn they sleep, crypts of eternity. There are so many. Die by the sword is awesome also. They say the pen is mightier then the sword…I say FUCK the pen…cause you can die by the sword!!! Saw SLAYER 4x. Been a fan since 1985. I have to say you can read/feel the music. That is quite the talent. Love watching your takes..Keep it comin 🤘🏻🤘🏻

"I want to see Slayer live but I know that's not possible."
I'm 38 years old, I've seen them live 13 times. Everytime seeing them it's like going to a show in a time capsule. The first time was in 2003, I was a baby at 19. You'd see veteren metal heads, guys like me, yougins who thought they knew what they were getting into but it was really for another band on that tour. Most were taken aback by them. My first experience live with Slayer they were in the middle of Otep, Mastadon, Hatebreed, and Killswitch Engage. I still have the bloody t shirt of me moshing to them. I got hit with somone's metal pant leg in my forehead and bled hard. I had bought a Slayer shirt before that was tucked in my pants and brought it out as a blood rag. Forehead lacerations bleed profusely. That shirt, blood and all, is framed in my living room. I feel sorry that you never saw them live. It was an experience every damn time.

One of my hopes for AI is that it will be used to *recreate* concerts that we missed for one reason or another. Combine that with tech like Apple Vision Pro and we'll be able to experience any concert as though we are actually there. Are live shows better? Sure, but that's not always possible. Imagine being able to "go back in time" and see a band like Slayer performing "live" at any venue of your choice! (Of course, we'd need the band's permission to do that, and I for one, would be happy to pay them for the experience.)
    \m/ -_- \m/

South of Heaven, IMHO, was Slayer's best album. The band took everything they learned from 'Reign in Blood', then sat down and started writing tight, powerful songs. The transition from the title track to 'Silent Scream' is one of the best segues in metal history.
Yes, sadly, Slayer have retired, so you can't see them live. That's why you owe it to yourself to pick up the double live album 'Decade of Aggression'. Just don't listen to it in a room containing any furniture you're fond of. ^_~

You should really listen to "M.I.A" - Avenged Sevenfold, now you'll probably get an Idea of the song from the title but the way they share their msg is amazing! Also Synyster Gates solo's are absolutely crazy. You didn't ask but here are the members(Stage names) M. Shadows(Vocalist) Synyster Gates(Lead guitarist) Zacky Vengeance(Rhythm guitarist) Johnny Christ(Bassist) Drummer(Brooks Wackerman) Also Their went through a few drummers because their original(The Rev/Jimmy Sullivan) Sadly passed away due to an Overdose in 2009. But that's all :)

Tom Araya is credited for writing the lyrics. Being a Catholic, I'm sure he is knowledgeable in the Bible and occultism. He is taking straight from the Bible on this one for sure. Great work. Always loved this one. ❤️

I seen Slayer live in 1999. I wouldn't sell that experience for a million dollars. That's one of those things were you are sad that it is already gone and you can never do it again. And those who didn't see them in their heyday will never know what it was like. You can watch every video and crank it all the way up, but NOTHING compares to seeing them live.

Oh heck yeah!!! Classic! Great job again and great input on the lyrics. Yes the mosh pit is great to this & all their songs! Especially the middle of Angel Of Death which I saw you do! Personally, one of my favorite instrumentals or close to it anyways is on this album, Spill The Blood. Or if you want some awesome drums from this album Ghosts Of War. But if you really want to get pumped do Hell Awaits! Keep it up!!!

I have learned that this song is best experienced when driving a 1977 El Camino on the freeway at 4 in the morning with the interior and dash lights off -played so loudly that you start disassociating by the time it changes into 'Silent Scream'- and then continue through the second song on the album until your nose starts bleeding while visions of dead relatives appear and wave you toward the light.
    Just my humble opinion

Slayer is legendary. Once you get into thrash a whole new world of different bands and sounds open up. Check out some of Germany's Teutonic Thrash
    Destruction and Kreator.
    Kreator: Hail to the hordes.
    Good gateway song.
    Destruction: Diabolical.
