I suspect it wasn’t a pre-roll, but just Kerry playing the opening riff as they were walking on. Slayer was never big on any theatrical bs so just walking on and playing was the norm for them. Angel of Death might have been a better Slayer recommendation for vocal range. Even just for that scream in the beginning... ruclips.net/video/BYz3G5CKAD8/видео.html

Never in a million years would I have expected a vocal coach to react to Slayer, wow. I say that as a big Slayer fan (they are my other favourite band of all time, sharing the top spot with Iron Maiden). Tom's amazing intensity and ability to sustain that through a whole show was amazing, but I never thought of him as being hugely technical. Try "Raining Blood" sometime for epic levels of intensity, or "Dead Skin Mask" for something...mellow. By Slayer standards at least. (it's also a great song about a real life serial killer, Ed Gein)

    • @thenecrosanct4906
      @thenecrosanct4906 3 года назад +4

That was my thought exactly. I saw this and thought: "Wow! Slayer. I wonder what Ken will make of this." As you say, it isn't peak technicality from a singer's point of view, though it does require good technique, of course. I guess it's evident from the fact he didn't comment a whole lot on the singing technique. Still cool that he gave them a listen and shared his professional perspective.

This is an old video, and someone may have already said this but... The South of Heaven intro sends shivers down my spine every time. Whether they play it straight after another mid set, or play it from off stage (actually playing it or from a tape) as they walk on to open the gig or back on after they've just swapped out their guitars for ones that don't need tuning or whether it's just on a youtube video. Standing in a theatre with the lights down hearing those notes ring out in the darkness anticipating the beginning of awesomeness is the best but every single time, shivers down my spine. It's as close as I get to a religious experience.
There's nothing else quite like it and even if they're playing a mid-afternoon slot at a festival it still works.

To get a batter idea of what Slayer was, the song 'Angel of Death' or the song 'Chemical Warfare' are more appropriate. Not sure of live performances though.. hard to find any good quality videos compared to today's recording technology. If you want something a bit more melodic from them, try the song 'Seasons in the Abyss.'

James Rivera was 61 when he recorded DARK INCARNATION, he must have been 55-56 when he recorded ABOLISH THE SUN. I had an album from them in ‘89 and his voice was marvelous then. It got better!!!

Not sure if those Marshall stacks are real but Rush is a great story of prop Marshall stacks.
Alex Lifeson had stack props that annoyed the piss out of Geddy Lee.
So Geddy would have washing machines, dryers, popcorn poppers and all sorts of silliness going on behind him.
Over the years the joke grew and they would have someone come out during the show and do laundry or make popcorn.
    You get the idea.

The familiarity probably comes from the flattened 5th in the chord progression. This was once called diablous in musica due to it's ominous sounds, and it goes back to Black Sabbath.

The Marshalls are real. And owned by the band. But only the bottom row is live. Kerry King uses 100 watt
    Marshall jcm800 heads.
At this time, I believe Gary Holt used 100 watt Marshall DSL heads. In other words, the stage volume was LOUD AF 😊

I subscribed!! Really like your reaction to heavy metal/rock bands. It's so fun to see you guys get introduced to the talent and complexity of this (imo) underappreciated genre. There are tons of talented vocalists out there. If you haven't done Alterbridge with Myles Kennedy on vocals I highly reccommed it.

Dude, know what you are talking about. Slayer debuted in 1983. They have seen styles come and go, and yet were still packing arenas until they retired last year.

Yeah seen them multiple times, they dont play tracks for the opening. That was just one guitar and was Kerry playing it while he walked out, Other than sometimes having a stage that actually rains blood on them they dont really do much for big intro and theatrics.

That riff your talking about uses a very similar progression as Dead Skin Mask and Coheed and Cambria's Welcome Home.

The most impressive voice in Heavy Metal is by Michael Kiske. He wrotes Heavy Metal Operas with the Band Halloween. That is a musical Fable, with 100 Transistion from the evil to the beauty. from the head voice to the belly voice and there are no gradations, everything climbs up and down the scales finely, without steps. And he has so much air and strength in his voice. It's so impressive. He dont growl, he really sings.
Check out the written Heaavy Metal Fable "Keeper of the seven keys".

As someone who used to sing in metal bands when I was younger, my experience was contrary to what most of the vocal coaches seem to suggest when I hear them comment on various metal screams. In my experience doing this style of vocal regularly, my throat got used to it and the more I did it the easier it was. It wasn't doing damage, I could still use clean vocals whenever I wanted with no breaks or cracking. If I try to scream along with these songs now, it will give me a sore throat in very little time and make it much more difficult to sing clean afterwards. It's not because I've forgotten whatever technique I was using, I still produce the sound in exactly the same way, it's just that my vocal folds are not adapted to singing like this.
I also suspect that having not maintained the adaptation, it would be very difficult to get it back later in life. I haven't tried, so I can't be sure, but I suspect, the body adapts more easily when younger and with regular use, it's easy to maintain that adaptation.

I knew my first slayer sight in Wacken 2003. I was grabbing some beer for my guys waiting in the Frontrow while on my way back first riff hit and everything and everyone went crazy and I found myself in one of the biggest moshpits i ever was in. people on slayer concerts don’t need to geht hyped up... Btw... no beer for the guys 😅.

The one detail I really love about your vidoes: You always take your time to at least check the name of the singer. Doesn't matter which band, the name is always there. Is it important to the video? Not at all. But a great show of respect.
If you're still looking for music to enjoy, I highly recommend checking out Savatage, by the way. Chance, Believe, Gutter Ballet, All that I bleed - whatever. It's the kind of metal that makes me just feel good, so I highly recommend them!

It's a pity but The Big 4 concert is not the best performance from Slayer. Better watch their own concerts, like Still Reigning from 2004 or one of their last shows like Killogy - there's the energy! )
And also pity is that the band not exists anymore, they were and are one of the Titans of Thrash Metal. \m/
    RIP Jeff Hannemann.

I'd like to see what you got to say about a band that I enjoy a lot ...still. Diablo Swing Orchestra with either The Age of the Vulture Culture or Lucy fears the Morning Star. There are not many vids live with this band. None of the 2 songs from above I found live and in good quality. There's a bass playthrough for The Age of the Vulture Culture, if you wanna go that way... or a videoclip for Voodoo Mon Amour if you wanna go for the official stuff, but the songs I mentioned before I think are more representative for this band. And I think you would have some things to say also about the vocals... maybe on Lucy Fears the Morning Star more...

I salute you for reacting to this. Not everyone's cup o tea. I saw them at a 200 person bar in '85, then at Red Rocks on the Clash of the Titans tour in '91. The South of Heaven album was a shift in Tom's singing style, there is more shout-singing, IMO. Still, good stuff. Thanks for the reaction!

He is one of those guys that when he smiles or laughs he is just such a sweet guy and then he gets on stage! I’ve watched some interviews with him and he really is just a nice guy. I only saw them live once way back in the late 80s maybe early 90s. Don’t remember. But it was before metal got super big. It was at an old roller skating rink and the stage was small and only like 8ft high. It was amazing to be so close to the band.
