Well i have to disagree. I saw them live and her voice is nowhere near that deep. But I've guessed that before even hearing them live since there are 3 vocal tracks playing when she growls, a really deep one, her normal growl and a higher pitched one at the same time. You can hear it if you pay close attention. I guess they took her growl and added 2 more processed.

@@coffinsmasher2406 your lows need to be brutal to really compete in that realm. Mine are decent but aren't quite good enough. Pig squeals are very good for that, but more for brutal death metal. So many people I've seen react to this song just completely disregard it because it's not their style of music, but they claim to be pro vocalists. It's nice to see someone actually realize the skill required to sing like that.
DETHdressedInRED Sad. I don't watch many reactors, the few I've seen for this song were really respectful. I'd be pissed if I clicked on a reaction video and they'd just disregard the song.
I mean, screaming isn't nearly as impressive as actually singing well. I practiced screaming about 10 years ago and was surprised at how quick you can make progress. Singing on the other hand takes so much practice its ridiculous. Shes still very talented, but more so because of the singing.
You might have made progress, but it's very likely that if you'd continued at that rate you would have damaged you're voice. Screaming/growling takes years of learning and must be paced in order to be done right, and also still requires some trained skill vocally before even trying in the first place. It's not easy, and is easily comparable to your regular good singing.
@@DETHdressedInRED maybe, it only took about a month and I was mimicking amon amarth. Then I started working on highs and other unique styles like Sodom and some black metal. I always rested my voice when it got sore, but about 2 months in, I could go through a whole album. Ive been practicing clean vocals for a few years and progress is MUCH slower. I've got some frank Sinatra stuff down in lower keys, but mid to high falls off pretty bad.
People who aren't acclimated to this genre of music don't fully understand the emotions that it invokes. The vocal style is meant to give you chills and is very primal... It totally strikes a certain nerve.
You said multiple times across the video that you felt like crying. Since you are a vocal coach you probably know this already but what you experienced is a phenomenon called "frisson" (French word for shivers) which is often felt when listening to music, it means that the part of your brain that processes feelings and emotions is deeply intertwined with the part that processes sounds! As someone who also never really listened to metal, it's great to know that I wasn't the only one getting shivers and crying during this song!
Olivia Alves - Wow, that was the most amazing comment I've ever read about this song! Also, Rebecca being a Pisces herself probably made her feel a special connection to what Tatiana was singing about.
every time I get that feeling it's for a good reason. That band 9 times out of 10 will be huge within a year. I've always been weird like that but I'm sure I'm not the only one.
For all of you who are wondering, it's a sensation felt by approximately 35-40% of the population (these are estimations made by researchers in the matter), so it's quite more commun than you think! And it applies to all types of music, classical music being the most typical and documented, but also games and movies' soundtracks. For example, I went to the Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience this year and you can bet that I cried. A lot. And so did the other 50.000 people in the arena.
@@noxsdelerius8326 I hope you're not asking because I'm a woman... I like bands like Cannibal Corpse, Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquillity or Decapitated. Some of them are melodic, but still death metal.
I'm so happy you mentioned the "false folds." This, I've heard, is the key to not ruining one's voice and also the ability to go between the clean and distortion. Love your analysis!
Thank you for this! Tatiana does do some vocal overdubs in the harsh growl sections. Its growls blended with fry vocals but its all her. So this video isn't completely live. She can actually pull this off live in concert very well. Tatiana is a very diverse vocalist. I love your growls! You sounded great!! I like seeing people give metal a chance and appreciating it. Tatiana Shmalyuk has been singing in 8 different bands since she was 15 years old. She was born in 1987, the year of Cat (or Rabbit) according to Chinese horoscope, and her zodiac sign is PISCES. Tatiana made great lyrics for this song. As a matter of fact she is telling about herself in this song revealing the traits of character of a Pisces personality.
Thank you! Tatiana and the band are amazing, and it's all her vocals, no effect hehe. this session was recorded as is, and then just a few additional backing vocals and guitars was added (think this is stated in the description of the video) . Please take a listen to any of their live performances, off camera if needed for additional multiple eargasms =D
Pisces is always a good introduction, despite the overdubbed vocal tracks, but vocal coaches should be analyzing Jinjer's live videos, where it's only Tatiana and her amazing voice. : )
And she can do it the same live. I saw her last year in a small club. I was about 5 feet from her and at times i could hear her growls from her and not the PA.
Justin G This not live like you think it is. This is been recorced live and they added some production on it (double growl track for example). Not the same as seeing them live.
one of the best parts of Tatiana's singing for me is, when she sings, there's no trace of the accent you hear when she talks. love singers who can sing so cleanly in a second language.
Saw the thumbnail, My first Jinjer experience, Remember running to my Wife afterwards for her to hear. Now years later we are 2 Jinjer concerts richer and countless of hours listing to Jinjer. Pure nostalgia, thanx Rebecca
@@rva Yeah, most people trying to do that for the first time just make a squeaking noise and then get VERY self-conscious...like all singing, a person needs to develop the confidence to go through with it. When you have traditional training, it actually goes a long way with harsh metal vocals.
@@cruinnannuin8925 Yes, this. It's what I'm telling everyone who asks me how I got my guttural vocals nailed: never be ashamed, afraid or too self-conscious with your vocals. Find a place where you can sing with complete confidence to practise so you don't inhibit yourself. Otherwise it will always stay at your named "squeaking noise".
@chad creamer Yeah, gutterals are generally pretty safe to pull off. It's the harsher screams that can hurt you. I dabble in growls, but I don't mess with higher range at all. Way to painful.
It's very very easy to find it, either you get it or not, so if it's sounding not at all like a growl then it isn't right. Once you find it just keep doing (everyday if it feels right) and it'll get better and better
@@lookingforgg you HAVE to sing clean too. Growling is unnatural and can destroy your voice if your foundation isn't strong. And even if it is it can still do. Be cautious. Don't growl more than max 30 minutes/ day.

You are actually the only RUclips vocal coach that didnt freak out listening this, that even understand the low growl technic and respect the singer. Thank you.
Nah there have been a few who weren't that shocked. I've been looking at a lot of vocal coaches lately. Mostly just to compare how they would approach things.
I’ve been screaming for 7 years and I can attest to what she is saying. I have abs without working out only because of how much core strength is needed for screaming like that. You have to open your throat an insane amount and the sound comes from the bottom of your chest. It’s a challenging thing to learn.
Glad to see someone that keeps such an open mind about all sorts of different vocal styles! Here's a little list of similar/metal vocalists I think you'd find most interesting as a vocal coach - Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth (Harlequin Forest and Demon of the Fall are good starter songs with amazing live performances on youtube), Devin Townsend (Deadhead being my personal favourite song), Mike Patton (anything from Faith No More is incredible) and Ihsahn (Twin Black Angels or Unhealer).
I think I've never been as impressed with anyone's growling/vocals as I was when I first heard Tatjana. Not since Opeth and Mikael Åkerfeldt anyway. That being said, I do also love Devin's, Patton's and Ihsahn's work too.
Oh yes. our Tatiana is insanely good at what she does, and has soul for days! I love how vocal instructors are raving about her and not trash talking her vocals at all--if I could roar like that, I'd be a happy camper, never mind sing that well!
For the record, you asked toward the end, "Is it all real" - well, technically speaking, you're hearing the recorded track, which includes her at minimum doubling that part. If you listen carefully, you can hear how she does one track of a traditional high fry scream behind the main growl track, which gives it an incredible depth of sound. But I've listened to plenty of live cuts where she definitely does this kind of technique and easily shifts back and forth between this fry technique and her beautiful singing voice.

right.. they’re a really solid band live.
@Brent P Drums sound different live, because different guy recorded this song to an album. dmitriy has that groove
This makes me happy. so often band flop live.
Well i have to disagree. I saw them live and her voice is nowhere near that deep. But I've guessed that before even hearing them live since there are 3 vocal tracks playing when she growls, a really deep one, her normal growl and a higher pitched one at the same time. You can hear it if you pay close attention.
I guess they took her growl and added 2 more processed.
you are the first vocal coach i’ve watched react to this, understand what vocal fry is, and actually IMITATE it !! (4:11) some times the idea of false chords are hard to grasp, but you took your own knowledge and actually did a decent scream !
You should check out Kardavox Academy. I've learned most of what I know about harsh vocals through him. VoiceHacks is also pretty good to get started on. But yeah I'm definitely subbing to this channel too.
“shes doing a bit of vocal fry” 👀

Maybe she doesnt like it, but every vocal coach respect the shit out of these types of vocals (when well done)
Likewise, I was like "Oh no, please don't you dare shit on booyaka!!" her review was similar to how I felt when I heard her the first time.
+ the intro music. Did me a worry.
Haha, loved seeing that moment when the chorus dropped and your eyes scaled to saucer-size ;)
Its always the best part of these reactions to this song.
I had the same reaction

It’s her way of not swearing on camera
This girl a gem. I honestly almost fell of my chair the first time i heard this. Some guys struggle to do that growl and shes nails it. Goddamn she's talented
As a male vocalist I can say there is nothing about screaming that men are inherently better at. Proper technique and practice are all that's needed
@@7792thereaper I'm a male vocalist and for some reason highs and mids are easy for me, but lows have been a struggle to master. They are improving, but they are the last thing to improve while mastering metal style vocals.
@@coffinsmasher2406 mids came naturally to me, I had to break in the highs. Took a few years. Lows have taken less work. Remember the most important thing is mouth shape. When doing lows your mouth needs to be just slightly open. Try moving your tongue a little bit too, see what works. I know how to do it just can't explain it.
@@7792thereaper I'm in a punk band, but I just joined a Deathcore project and it made me realize how weak my lows were in comparison.
@@coffinsmasher2406 your lows need to be brutal to really compete in that realm. Mine are decent but aren't quite good enough. Pig squeals are very good for that, but more for brutal death metal. And yes they can be done with exhale techniques. Traditionally done with inhales but can be done with exhale techniques
My favorite thing to do now? Go to first reaction voice coaches with Jinjer...😂😂😂

@@LoveandWhispers Same here, the coaches' faces are always entertaining - especially after they stop the track just before the growling.

I like any reactions of this song
Do not need to go to any other Voice Coach than Rebecca, she is the best.
So many people I've seen react to this song just completely disregard it because it's not their style of music, but they claim to be pro vocalists. It's nice to see someone actually realize the skill required to sing like that.
DETHdressedInRED
Sad. I don't watch many reactors, the few I've seen for this song were really respectful. I'd be pissed if I clicked on a reaction video and they'd just disregard the song.
To be honest, her scream is one of the best I've ever heard.
Tatiana is a force of nature, Jinjer are an amazing band and yes it's all real, you should check them out live on stage, amazing....👍👍🤘🤘
People who aren't acclimated to this genre of music don't fully understand the emotions that it invokes. The vocal style is meant to give you chills and is very primal... It totally strikes a certain nerve.
Some people can enjoy the music without being emotional. We’re not all soft c u n t s
Every time I listen to this song I tear up! Its crazy
Damn, ok, so it's not just me.
"There's a time and place for every music genre out there" I love that!
Your growl was *amazing* Really. Saying that as a death metal fan.

@@noxsdelerius8326 I hope you're not asking because I'm a woman... I like bands like Cannibal Corpse, Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquillity or Decapitated. Some of them are melodic, but still death metal.
Cant say I like death metal more of anything but for me death metal is raunchy and has some bad vocalists in it
I'm so happy you mentioned the "false folds." This, I've heard, is the key to not ruining one's voice and also the ability to go between the clean and distortion.

Metal is the MOST diverse genre of music ever, hands down. Much love, respect to you!! \m/ \m/
eh, at the show she does the growl. can only do one at the time right ;)
Tatiana Shmalyuk has been singing in 8 different bands since she was 15 years old. She was born in 1987, the year of Cat (or Rabbit) according to Chinese horoscope, and her zodiac sign is PISCES. Tatiana made great lyrics for this song. As a matter of fact she is telling about herself in this song revealing the traits of character of a Pisces personality.
WELL DONE . YOU GET IT . HER YIN AND YANG . NOT MANY GET THAT . AND THATS WHAT PUTS THE SONG INTO PERSPECTIVE .

4:10...I'm sorry, you're in the wrong line of work. You should be a vocal performer. We need more "Tatiana's" in the world =)
one of the best parts of Tatiana's singing for me is, when she sings, there's no trace of the accent you hear when she talks. love singers who can sing so cleanly in a second language.

Not a bad growl at 4:10. Not bad at all. Especially since I assume it isn't something you practice much. Or ever.
Thanks. Never done it in my life! You saw me trying to emulate first time
@@rva Yeah, most people trying to do that for the first time just make a squeaking noise and then get VERY self-conscious...like all singing, a person needs to develop the confidence to go through with it.
Yeah, when she nailed the growl it took me aback. I've never heard anyone just pick it up like that ahahaha
@chad creamer Yeah, gutterals are generally pretty safe to pull off. It's the harsher screams that can hurt you. I dabble in growls, but I don't mess with higher range at all. Way to painful.
Love how you try to do a growl yourself
I've been trying for years (not very seriously, in showers and cars mainly lol) and she just shamed me. 😂😂
@Sebastian keeping it consistent and giving it depth without loosing too much breath on the other hand is
It's very very easy to find it, either you get it or not, so if it's sounding not at all like a growl then it isn't right.
@@Celatra yea, you're right, that's one really common mistake of trying to start with such extreme vocals, one that I did myself and now that I only sing clean I can tell how knowing how to sing first can help a LOT with screaming, not only help but prevent injuries

As somebody who hates working out and loves music... I guess I need to start taking singing /screaming lessons
I'm starting my fray journey from today on. I feel as though I need something to shake up my "arsenal" if you will lol

Lol, you list my 4 favourite artists.... we just became best friends.
Two of my favorite.
Dan swano would be a good pick too
Mike Patton and Kyo from Dir en grey are 2 monsters in my opinion. I would like to see them on this channel
Katy perry: hear me roar
JINJER: cute.
Lol
For the record, you asked toward the end, "Is it all real" - well, technically speaking, you're hearing the recorded track, which includes her at minimum doubling that part. If you listen carefully, you can hear how she does one track of a traditional high fry scream behind the main growl track, which gives it an incredible depth of sound. But I've listened to plenty of live cuts where she definitely does this kind of technique and easily shifts back and forth between this fry technique and her beautiful singing voice.

Welcome to the world of Jinjer! Haha. I discovered them in 2016 and have been a massive fan since. I was fortunate enough to actually see them perform live earlier this year actually, and it truly was a spectacular performance. The lead singer (Tatiana) does this all raw with no effects done to her voice or mic. She really is talented. If I were to recommend another video by Jinjer, i's suggest to watch them perform "Who is Going to be the One?" Live. It should be the first video you see on Napalm Record's channel.
This is one of my favorite Pisces reaction videos. I come back to it again and again, despite the questionable audio playback. The reaction is just so good! The facial expressions, the knowledge, the beautiful voice. I love the ad lib sung melody in the first pre-chorus. And when you try the growl for yourself it's delicious! Sounds excellent!
This song gives me chills every single time I hear it. Totally entrancing performance.
I always wondered what happened to the girl from "Léon: The Professional". I see she joined a metal band and is all grown up.

It's all Tatiana. ;) You can see an even heavier song, and a live performance. Jinjer - Who Is Gonna Be The One? And more on her range, and more clean vocals, I Speak Astronomy.
I don't normally comment on anything, I stumbled upon this video after watching the original video you reviewed. It so refreshing to hear someone very openly say it's not their cup of tea but actually appreciate it for what it is. I'll definitely be checking out more of your videos.

Wonderful, open-minded analysis with some technical talk but without getting all voice geeky. Can't wait to watch more reviews.
You have probably been my favourite "react", to this song. Sure its funny seeing people squirm when the guitar distortion kicks in, but there are many that have completely dismissed their talents, especially Tatianas vocal ability, because its "just screaming" etc. You took it apart and showed sincere appreciation for the skill involved in doing vocals like these, especially when she transitions in the bridge between growl and singing.
Even had a go of it yourself, bravo!
Thank you for your video!
"Well I wasn't expecting that..." Thank you so much! I think I have made the rounds of all vocal coaches reacting to this song and yours was right up there! I love that you embraced it too. Very cool. Big thumbs up!
Could you react to Awakening by Unleash the Archers? Brittney Slayes does such clean melodic vocals for her genre!
Brittney is amazing in any song, but in Tonight We Ride she shows more her awesome vocals.
Yes!!! Any Unleash the Archers next!
What do you mean "for her genre"? If there is one thing power metal is known for (other than lyrics themes based on fantasy and being cheesy and uplifting) is having clean, powerful and dramatic vocalists. Except in the case of extreme power metal, obviously.
Well I mean her genre is Power Metal. Jinjer is metalcore. Sure it's still Metal, but different subgenres.
Tonight we ride has much stronger vocals, also Apex is just a great song, better song than Awakening. But any exposure UTA gets, makes me happy
Well, I didn't see that growl of yours coming. That growl was beautiful.
