  • When framing a deck, it's important to make sure the frame is square. This will ensure that the deck is built properly and make the rest of the job go smooth. One helpful tool in achieving this is a calculator that can provide exact measurements.
Start by pulling 10 feet from the outside of the deck and marking it on the top inside of the ledger. Then, pull the inside of the ledger to the deck length. Add these measurements into the calculator using the rise and run, then hit diagonal for the square measurement.
Next, pull the tape on the diagonal from the ledger to the deck length. Make sure the tape is on the 10-foot mark and you are using the bottom of the numbers. Adjust the joist until it crosses the correct measurement. Nail the joist off so it does not move, and you now have a square deck.
By following these steps and using a calculator for precise measurements, you can ensure that your deck frame is square and properly aligned for a sturdy and reliable structure.
    Key Highlights:
Using the Construction Master for precise measurements.
Marking from ledger to end for accuracy despite joist irregularities.
Ensuring alignment with string lines for a straight finish.

Yeah that 3 4 5 or 6 8 10 method doesn't work on the squirrely joist material I got. Bows, twists and other irregularities prevents it completely. I was just going to use a big hand made framing square but your method is solid. I wonder why there aren't more videos describing this method?
