- I use a garage pad in this example but as a carpenter these methods are used on a daily basis. If you are building ANYTHING you should watch this video.

I want you to know you saved my bacon 🥓 the explination of the 3/4/5 i needed to think it through but had a slab poored that needed some math to get the framing right. This video was exactly what i needed to work with my brain fog. Thank you
You are absolutely correct bro. This is what I do before I snap a house out an detail it. Only thing I did different was I'd have the labor burn my tape 1' just because I never liked using the end of my tape to square a slab. But ya, snap the longest wall off your crows foot and the carpet guys are happy, floor tile guys, and if you can read a level when you plum & line whoever roofs the house will be happy . Gotta be square. Good video homie.
Great video! I am framing up a shed and needed to figure out how to do this. Thanks!
You’re welcome!
The dimensions of a building should always be face of framing to face of framing- not finish. You want your framing to be flush with foundation. OSB or plywood substrate should extend beyond foundation 7/16 or whichever thickness to keep water away from foundation and sill plate. Many ways of doing it- but I prefer this way!
your a genius I just ran into this problem I wish I would of saw this video earlier believe me one of my measurement came out by 1 in off and I had a wavy wall for an add on and when I put the subfloor on I had to cut and fit every board over I was a long 2 days off work but we finished it this is a better idea love it will try this the next time I run into this
Is there no footing? Just a pad??
Hi Kody. Thanks so much for the wisdom in the video. I am building a house on a heavy duty trailer. The subfloor frame I built to put the floor sheathing on is not a perfect square. Should I make the AdvanTech sheathing square with the trailer or square with the deck I built on top of the trailer?
I would make the frame for the subfloor (the long sides) parallel with the trailer frame. Then I would make the sheeting square on top of that so your walls and roof are nice and square. Does that help?
So for 4 corners would that 9.12 and 15 need to be done opposite corrner?
i have that exact problem but the other way around...my lengths match but im off diagonally 2 inches...im lost dont know what to do
thank you sir for taking the time to make this video, it really helped!
Thanks for letting me know that.
Did it? It confused the sh1t out of me.
SO on the parallel line below do the same as the left top corner correct? Also in a very large room can on the long wall should i chalk line as close as possible because I won't see the line when I start to lay vinyl plank down??
Aight cool man. I just had to make sure I was thinkin right. I actually frame been doin it ten years. I'm just gonna pull down nine ft. Make some kinda mark square mark. And where ever my 15 ft from the 9/12/15 intersect I pop my line through and make all my numbers the same? Or should I pop my wall then check and adjust?
Pop your lines first
Thank you
You’re welcome
❤❤I love to learn more from you
Thank you so much, what an awesome video.
Thank you ,great help to me
My area where I m planning to build house is 60 degree all 4 Side is there way out for that?
I've got a problem in that my numbers aren't working. My carport is 22 x 20 and when I check square, it's off by 3 to 9 inches. So I went 22 x 22 and times one side by 1.414. This gave me 31.14 so my square is 31 x 31. Re measured and it was off by 5 inches. I don't have any more hair to pull out.
Sounds frustrating! I have other videos on using the 3-4-5 method. You could check to see what corner is sqaure. That will tell you what other ones are out.
Always pull you numbers from the inside of the building, not the outside corners. Never try an square up something by pulling off the outside corner.
Great video, helped a lot.
Glad it helped
Nice haircut.
Well thank you
Thank you my friend
Just had a garage pad with stem wall poured. It's supposed to be 24*28. Ended up 24*27'11"*24'*28 3/4. Measures perfect diagonally. Almost a parallelogram. Struggling with squaring it up
I had that happen once! It took a few hours to get it right. You need to “happy medium” the building on the foundation. Meaning some walls will overhang the foundation and others might be in from it. That’s in order to get proper dimensions and to make sure it’s square to the world!
I'm not dissing your video, but half way through, before you brought the Pythagorean theorem into your video, I was saying to myself, "what if the contractors doing the pad made a nice parallelogram for your base? The 3-4-5 method is fricking foolproof! Nice video though, I would have never thought to use a chalk line as an absolutely accurate way to start!
Thanks man!
this is new creation right im not missing something about existing. or if basically i wall out a open garage it just sq it up.
how you know that the first line u take is straight
and after it that the square is in the right place not moved
Saleem Bsoul you go to the other corner pull off the 5 7/8 . Snap the two ends now you have a straight line . Pull your numbers off that line
How can I apply this method without having 3ft to start with
1.5ft/2ft/2.5ft or 9inch/12inch/15inch
How would you square it if your foundation was on concrete walls that were at different elevations?
For different elevations I would do the 3-4-5 method in at least 2 of the corners. If those are square and all your dimensions are correct you should be good. Sometimes a guy has to use a level to plumb up or down and possibly the use of string lines. Hope that helps.
should of squared pad first, little late after cement is poured
You and I both know that if someone else poured the pad, it could be out of square and most times it is.
@@uptokode nope, we pour and build, just takes a little time and its done right
why not cnc u crack me up bro 😂😂
Agreed!
This would have been much better if you just showed a box, how to square a box with math and then applied that to construction.
how to find 90.180.360.square with teodolit and square.
The 3,4,5 don't work on a complete square okay. You will always get it wrong
If you start with 1 square corner and measure everything parallel from the 2 walls that make that corner..then you will have a square building. But it’s always best to verify the 4 wall dimensions and THEN do a diagonal measurement for verification.
@@uptokode you will still be off. 3,4,5 format is like breathing. Squaring a building is different. You run a line in the middle first, and one across in the middle. Like a + plus. Then you use 6,8,10 to square. Try for yourself and see how easier squaring is.
Masons rather breathing a building because it takes less time. But you have to start from the middle my friend.
I fell asleep what happen??
This was Kody from almost 10 years ago. Much better at delivery now. Thanks for watching!
I was confused and now it’s worse :(
who uses 3 eights plywood ? .....NO ONE !!!!!!!!
Everyone...for walls silly.
Where I'm from we only use three eights for soffit . Exterior wall sheathing is always at least half inch OSB
My adventure with the woodworking began with projects from Woodglut.
Wrong! How do u get the first line straight is the question. But there's different ways to get the first line straight
You just pull the line and snap it, a string in tension between two points is always straight . He said he snapped a chalk line
I found great plans on the Stodoys plans website. I think this is a good solution for everyone.
Really enjoy it. Let's check Stodoys plans also.
This is so over complicated! People there’s many other videos out here that simplify a simple task..!
A teacher you’re not
One of my very first videos. I got better…
you times 20 x 20 + 400 and times 30 x 30 = 900 so 900 + 400 = 1300 square root = 36.0555128 you'll thank me later use 2 long tape measures get it straight in your head 1 st very easy know the answer before you start this dude is lost
This is so over complicated
Lol no help. Make this simpler. My buddy fucked his shop up so bad lol
