He was one of those guys who actually lived the life he sang about, like Robert Johnson or Leadbelly, Hank Sr. or Merle Haggard.
He was the poster boy for "What you see is what you get" and that's why the music resonates so deeply for so long.
The real thing scares people in today's fake world, and most people can't process the artist or his work if it's not manufactured by computers and committees.
Most of the rap guys actually are what they appear to be, but they're way more extreme than the old timers, so their longevity is not as good.

@@jpalberthoward9 Dickey got kicked out his own band 24 years ago. Greg talked about what a time-wasting drunken jack ass Dickey was, and how he would have fired him years before if he could. 39 takes on Les Brers...and the band used #2.
Now that he's dead, everyone who is left, and especially Chuck, will soften their tone about Dickey.
Dickey Betts was at one time a fabulous musician but somewhere along the line, he turned into a hillbilly version of Ace Frehley.

It's very real and its not as if everyone can just flip a switch. Everyone is not created equally when it comes to addictions. He lived a long lucrative life. Btw, all of those "best guitar players of all time" list are garbage for the most part but no, you're wrong about him being on most of those list. Its rare to see him on those list unless its maybe a top 100 list and the large majority of the people listed ahead of him aren't even close to being the guitar player that Dickey Betts was. Then you have the fact that most people don't have a clue how good he really was and you clearly seem to be one of those people.

Read Gregg Allman's book if you want to get a better idea about why Betts was forced out. Back when Gregg wrote that book the wounds were still fresh. He pulled no punches. It was Gregg, and it was likely Butch and Jaimoe, too. He put it all on Dickey, saying that Dickey had become difficult and unreasonable and his playing had worsened. And Dickey's behavior had become combative and erratic. There was an incident around that time with Dickey, domestic violence, alcohol, firearms and the police. And much was made out of Dickey being uncompromising about his guitar Amp volume always being cranked up way too high and it was damaging the quality of the overall show. It is a shame he wasn't with the band all the way through. I saw the band twice in the Haynes/Allen Woody/Dickey Betts years and they were outstanding. It is a beautiful thing that Dickey and Gregg at least patched up their differences at least to some degree and that Dickey seemed over all the drama by the time he sat down for Dan Rather. RIP, Dickey. He was 50% of the greatest rock band guitar duo, ever.

He never ever accepted Dickie back in his family or friendship or anything. He went on to live his life and finish out and die. Dickie was never involved with the band again Warren and everyone else, including trucks, went to do wonderful things, and certainly Dickie went on to do his own thing I’m not trying to take anything away from Dickie as a guitarist. I’m just saying that he was not harmonious with Greg at the end. Maybe Greg did forgive him, but he was fired, and there is legal documentation to prove it. I’m sure he would say he wasn’t the reason he was fired was just like what Greg said to bear the book read it. It tells exactly what Greg thought as a matter fact you can listen to it on RUclips in his voice, it’s an audio no doubt there at peace now and that’s truly all that matters and both are certainly in a much greater band than any of us playing on this earth but Greg and Dwayne were heroes to me. I’m totally blind and grew up and making Georgia and went to the blind Academy less than a mile and a half from where their big house was. I was at many of those parties, and they were very good to me as a young guitarist and then too although he paid me not much attention Greg certainly did and knowing Dwayne was an amazing thing I hope in their lifetime is so lucky to meet people such as truly outstanding careers, and truly one of the greatestand one of their tragic losses excuse my dictation like I said I’m blind so I don’t type on the phone well but playing guitar back then was a wonderful thing just as it is today enjoy and good luck with your own career

I love Dickey Betts, he’s the reason I started playing guitar and has been my musical North Star ever since. That said, he was delusional about his exit from the ABB. The sad fact is that he was holding the band back. The audience wanted the band to evolve and he was standing in the way. More importantly than that, his playing had completely fallen off and he could no longer perform at the level demanded by the ABB and their audience. His post ABB career demonstrates just how badly his playing had fallen off.
I saw it myself. I was at Bett’s second to last performance with the ABB in 2000 and left early because he was playing so poorly. On the way to the car I told my wife “that’s the last time I go to an ABB concert as long as Dickey Betts is in that band.”
He’s a legend, but he overstayed his welcome.

Dickey became the leader when Duane died. From all that I read, he was a stern leader, probably because the rest of the band was getting out there. My guess is that he wasn’t on the same page as the rest of the band and after Gregg cleaned up, Dickey still had his demons. And when you’re in your sixties, no one has patience for someone else’s BS.

But did they? If you are referring to “ruining his life by getting kicked out of the Bros.” I’d say no. How was his life ruined? He put together another band & called it Great Southern (again) & was surrounded by great musicians. Then he played his incredible music in much smaller clubs to his adoring fans. His band was easily as good as The Allman Bros. if not better. Maybe you think, yeah but financially he was ruined. Nope not even close. He had plenty of money, toured at his own pace, & played much less shows. He & GS just kicked ass & sounded incredible live. I looked up his net worth & he was worth 10’s of millions of dollars after he left the Bros. You know why? Incredibly good early on - very little worthwhile music by these guys after Duane and Berry died.

You left out the part where he beat up his wife more than a few times while coked up. He hit Allen Woody and treated the band like abused children to his abusive father. After he was arrested for domestic violence on tour, that was the last straw. Read “One Way Out” and they’ll tell you what kind of man he was. Great player. Terrible person
