“Jessica” is my favorite piece of music by anyone ever. It’s pure joy. My heart is mighty sad today. But I’m lucky to have lived through a time when such music was being made.
Dickey was an incredible talent. RIP
“When it’s time for leavin”……..
We are sad, but we understand. Rest easy Ramblin Man.
R.I.P. Dickey Betts you sure made that cowboy hat & boots look good, what a fabulous guitar slinger/singer.
Blue Sky’s & Peace.🤍🤍🤍
Fantastic songwriter, great guitarist. I loved his voice, too. Rest in paradise.
An underrated guitarist in rock ‘n’ roll. R.I.P. Dickie Betts
Guys who are in the Hall of Fame Aren’t underrated. He was a classic southern rocker.
Not underrated, most rank him as a top player of all time and is usually recognized on everyones list
Underrated is by far the most the most overused word on RUclips. 99.9% of the time it’s not true.
One of the greatest no doubt! Without him The Allman Brothers could not have carried on to have the success that they did after Duane. Glad I got to see him live with the Brothers at least once. We are at a time now that all our musical heroes are not going to be around much anymore. Father time has caught up on this classic rock generation. Thanks Dickey for the great music!
😢 The Allmans one of my favorite bands of all time, most members are now gone. I was fortunate to see Duane and Dickie play in the Allmans.
To this day, one of the best shows I ever attended was the Allmans on the Seven Turns tour. Betts was a huge reason why that show was so great.
My first tour as well. MSG, still have the ticket stub. Saw them many times after that. Saw Dickey band opening for Gregg’s band at Westbury!
Being from Georgia, the Allman Brothers were almost required listening. R.I.P.
Swear to God I was listening to the SUNY live Blue Sky with Dickie and Duane (which is amazing) this morning while driving thinking Dickey and Jaimoe were the only ones left then came here immediately when I saw the news on AP site. Pete, your channel made me dive deep on ABB about 3 years ago so I I had to get your take. Thanks for leading me down the rabbit hole. Such a beautiful talent Dickey was.
Hit us hard.. Wonderful tribute Pete.. Sad day indeed.. He is now flying in the Blue Sky.. R.I.P. Memories and music will live 4ever..
Icon, some of the greatest rock instrumentals for Mr.Betts R.I.P.
Very sad news today.
Thanks Pete for your support of music.
Thank you Dickie, for your gift of music for everyone.
Saw him with the Brothers several times. Always my favorite. R.I.P.
I've been listening to the Allmans and solo Betts all day. Dickey was a great, unique talent and he will be missed. Great tribute Pete!
RIP The Ramblin' Man.. childhood hero of mine 😭💔😞🙏
When I think Allman Brothers, I think Jessica…an absolute epic masterpiece. What a gift to his daughter. RIP.
It's one of their greatest tracks, to be sure.
With every passing, it feels like chapters of my life are closing. RIP Dickey.
Great perspective Pete! Saw the Allman Brothers many times with Dickie Betts, so many gems! RIP 🪦 In Memory of Forrest Richard Betts. 4/18/24
You're my blue sky, you're my sunny day
Lord, you know it makes me high
When you turn your love my way
Turn your love my way, yeah
RIP DB
Loved ALL his stuff. Bougainvillea, Atlanta's Burning Down. His solos always moved me.
Grew up with listening to the Allman Brothers. Jessica is such a classic and immediately recognizable! One of my favorites for sure! R.I.P. Dickie.
Just occasionally clicked on this video while listening to Win, Lose or Draw album...didn't know...RIP Dickie Betts
Massively underrated album…RIP Mr Betts
I Always liked that record
I have the album- love High Falls! I love his instrumentals!
I didn't know until about 3 hours ago. (( its April 19 12:47am))) Had no idea. Been sitting here thinking and listening and going through memories in my mind. Rest easy Dickey.🙏🌹
That record doesn't get the recognition it deserves, High Falls a masterpiece!
In the UK, Dickie will always be remembered for “Jessica”, which was used as the opening theme for the BBC show “Top Gear” from around 1977 until the show was canned quite recently. Terrific number, as were all of Dickie’s compositions. Sad loss.
Saw the Allman Bros. on the Seven Turns tour in St. Louis in 1990. The band was awesome.
Very sad. RIP Dickie Betts.
You were the man, Dickey.... thank you for all you left us. Hope you know how much you impacted so many, find peace brother...
Dickie Betts What a Guitar player (RIP)
Great Tribute PETE
Will be listening to ABB tracks and will have a couple bourbons in his memory. In Memory of Dickie Betts! I loved the guy and will miss him dearly. What a life!
To me the heart and soul of the ABB. 👍👍
One of the greatest guitarists, singer-songwriters of his generation. Southern Rock, Country Rock and Blues Rock were all heavily influenced by his work with The Allman Brothers Band and as a solo artist. Dickey's playing with Duane Allman laid the groundwork for the twin-guitar sound, and their jams were legendary. His later work with Warren Haynes in the reborn ABB was incredible as well. I was lucky enough to see Dickey play live a number of times, both with the ABB and with his own bands. It was no secret that it was onstage that he was really in his element and I have many fond memories of all those shows. I know Dickey experienced some difficulties for quite a number of years, including the health problems that ultimately took his life.
Dickey is one of that rare group of musicians about whom it can be said that music would not have been the same without them. He'll be missed.
R.I.P. Forrest Richard Betts 🎸✌️
I always loved his guitar solos mixing blues, jazz and country. RIP Dickey Betts.
Very sad news indeed, rest in peace Dickie.
The Master of Southern Lead guitar and those twin leads. He started the whole twin lead break in their songs.
This man was a real musician, he felt every note he played!
Your music will live on !
Rest In Peace...
Man this hits hard. My favorite guitarist next to SRV. I made sure that “Blue Sky” was the first song my daughter ever heard. I’m so thankful I got to see him a few times. Thanks for the tribute Pete
Strange coincidence, I saw the Allman Brothers on August 27, 1990 the day Stevie died.. Dickey was still with them, they did a nice tribute to Stevie that night..
@@carlosdanger6129 wow that’s incredible. What an experience
Rip Dickey. Great player.
RIP Dickie - worked that 58' Les Paul like a true craftsman xx
Never got round to checking out the Allmans, but always recognised their impact. And I can see how much Dickie's passing has affected you just by watching this tribute alone, Pete. R.I.P., Dickie!
I unfortunately was never into the Allman Brothers before discovering this channel. SOT has inspired me to get into so many bands that I never would have before, and the Allman Brothers band was definitely one of them. So much great music from these legends. RIP, Dickie Betts.
A wonderfully sincere and informative tribute. An accurate description of one of the greatest artists in rock music history. Thank you Pete. Rest in Peace Dickie Betts.
I hope you're jamming with Duane, Berry, Greg and Butch right now. Peace everyone.
RIP Dickey. Your Soul will live on Forever in the back seat of a Greyhound Bus rollin' down Highway 41 ❤️
Very melodic, great style , great song writing for sure to say the least. RIP Mr Betts
RIP Dickey ... Best band ever and the best concerts I ever attended
This one hits hard. What a tremendous talent. Saw him many times in the nineties with the Allmans. I had the honor and pleasure to meet Mr. Betts backstage after one of those shows in Atlanta. RIP Dickey Betts
same us he chatted with fans at the tourbus signed records hats cds was gracious thanked everyone for coming god bless sonething like that think he signed acd for the girl.i was dating played guitar did melissa maybe mentioned to him but was nice of him to greet and sign records cds for fans
RIP, Dickey, Duane, Greg, Berry, Lamar, Woody and Butch.
Thanks, Pete. So sad.
Nice one Bill you included Lamar
@@truckerkevthepaidtourist , thanks. A few of them I had to look up. But they should all be remembered.
@@williamlangan5902 yeah Lamar Williams was a good dude.
They needed somebody after Berry died during the brothers and sisters beginning.
The good thing though is the fact that with chuck leavell on board with the brothers and sisters he told Greg he said hey I got a guy from my other band sea level Lamar Williams. want to give him a try? and sure enough he fit the bill for a while.
Tremendous job. Pete. RIP👍
Thanks Pete, this hit hard when I woke up to see the great man has passed away. One of my all time favourite guitarists and the most fluid player I ever heard. Never forget the long hair, big hat and Dickie swaying away to those wonderful licks. Rest easy Ramblin Man.
Thank you for this tribute, Pete. The Allman Brothers Band's music has brought me more joy than perhaps any other. It was Dickey Betts' songs that did this the most often. "Les Brers in A Minor", "Pegasus". "High Falls", "Kind of Bird", and of course, "In Memory of Elzabeth Reed". Dickey's solo in "Jessica" is my favorite guitar solo. What a fantastic composer. This one hurts. RIP Dickey Betts.
Very sad news, indeed. RIP Dickey Betts 🙏
Hi all so sad what a great!
Sad day for sure. Had to listen to Fillmore East this morning. RIP Dickey.
Thanks Pete..such a great loss The Allman Brothers was one of the only few Southern Rock bands I really enjoyed and especially those early albums, that Fillmore Album is one of the best in any Genre a "Must Have" in a collection if you love guitar music, I was fortunate enough to see them in the 80's when they played the Beacon twice... RIP Dickie 😔
Thx Pete
RIP Dickey Betts. Thank you for all the joy and happiness your music brought to me over the years. Saw The ABB in 1998 with Dickey and Jack Pearson on guitar. They were incredible. The ABB blew me away that night. One of my top 5 best concerts.
same like 96 maybe small auditorium great show
Saw them that tour in Cleveland, Ohio. (Naugtica Stage) right on 6:17 Lake Erie, was expecting to see Warren Haynes on stage but, Jack Pearson (who I had never heard of ) was on guitar and it blew us away! They jammed for nearly 4 hours and everyone took a solo, I will never forget Dickey Betts tipping his Cowboy hat and saying, it's usually snowing up here in 'snow country" but today it's 98⁰ ! It was the greatest guitar jam I have ever seen!
The whole concert was just an absolute treasure for a guitarist and Dickey and Jack were both on Strats, they did an acoustic blues set that was cool as it comes..
I could write a book on this concert and my journey there for this 2 night stand they did there,
I still have my concert ticket stub and I will never forget that concert!
Dickey Betts showed people what "feel and tone" are.
I could close my eyes from a mile away and know when Dickey was playing lead, Dickey made the Allman Brothers Band as far as the arrangements and songwriting.
His trademark sound will never be copied, Warren Haynes, Dangerous Dan Toler, were all heavily influenced just like soo many other guitarist.
This has hit me very hard the last 2 days and been watching live footage of The ABB and listening to Bougainvillea from Great Southern album and he will live on through his music!
Saw Gregg Allman's last (solo) show in 2016, it was great but, nothing goes together better than Dickey's lead guitar with Gregg singing!
In my playing of guitar, You learn that every note is expensive and playing with feel like "Dickey" is where it's at!
Loud and Proud,
R.I.P. Dickey Betts, there will never be another!
Devastating loss. The reason I learned guitar was because of those beautiful twin leads. Creative and will never be replaced.
The end of an era, "Dickey" Betts. I have my own Allman Brothers tribute band in the Bay Area, Idlewild West. First saw The ABB in October 71 at Carnegie Hall, right after Duane died. Bittersweet. RIP Dickey.
Rest in peace Dickie Betts
I discovered the Allman's in 1979. Enlightened Rogues. Loved Pegasus. RIP Mr. Betts.
RIP Dickie Betts. Watching SOT got me back into southern rock and Allman Brothers in particular. A great loss.
Saw him dozens of times with the Allmans and solo. One of my earliest guitar heroes
RIP LEGEND, hope you and duane, gregg, I berry, and butch, are reminiscing of the good old days. Best American band ever. 🍄 🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄
Man what a drag. Rest in peace brother!
Dickey's guitar tone was beautiful, impeccable. He could really make the guitar sing! He wrote so many great songs, including my favorite rock instrumental of all time, "Jessica." Dickey, I miss you already, brother!
Pony Boy was a truly underrated gem on the Brothers and Sisters album. Dickey was a monster guitarist. Rock in Peace, Dickey!!
Boy haven't the Allmans come up time and time again in these past SOT daily rankings!! Huge physical loss again, but right on Pete and friends for keeping these legends alive in our hearts and souls.
I almost started crying when I heard we lost another guitar hero. Great band.
Rest in Peace Ramblin' Man. Thank You...
Huge ABB fan. Probably from 1991 till the stopped, I attended ,25 plus shows, 15 of those at least with Dickey. No other guitarist melded rock, jazz, blues, western swing, gypsy jazz, country, psychedelica, and throw in some tastey slide to developethat style, the Dickey Betts sound. No one before or after him has played like that, probably never will. A TRUE original.
Dickie's got "Trouble No More". RIP.
Sad is hardly the word. Visualizing being in the parking lot of the local shopping center just a few blocks from the childhood home where the band had some instruments they were trying out from Lipham Music Store and one of the family's owners sent them into the parking lot to play because they were just too loud in the store. Then remembering watching the band on stage just before the release of their first album playing a three song on the stage of the local high school where Lipham's had set up a multi-day battle of the bands. It was just rock (and roll) then....no plethora of genres. But the band and all its players - including Dickie Betts - were just mesmerizing. Literally one of the the first rock guitarists seen playing live and one that has been a constant presence. He still will be, but only in the music he left us. Thanks for this, Pete. As you said, this one hurts. R.I.P. Dickie - thanks for the great music and even greater memories.
Dickey Betts was a great guitarist and did a fine job alongside Duane Allman and all the others. RIP
Great tribute episode...nice work sir. Thank you!
🌠Good Video Pete...i listened 2 Allmans on the way 2 see judas priest in connecticut ..i've been 2 the allmans grave in macon georgia....all buried together ..like a family ...cause they are a family ..heavy....& 80 years isa long life..& the music will live on...
To a great Southern gentleman, time to rest, well deserved.
Thanks 👍.. in memory of Elizabeth Reed
Another sad day for the brothers
RIP Dicky. Of the best American rock band ever.
Very sad day, leaves just an awesome legacy of awesome music 😢😢😢😢😢😢
I was a teen in the mid 80s when I discovered the Allman Brothers Band. They were broken up and gone. A dead issue. Dickey Betts and Gregg Allman were both struggling in their solo careers and no one cared about their brand of blues, rock, jazz and country anymore. I didn't know anything about Duane Allman or Berry Oakley, beyond their names and playing on those early records. There was no internet and Creem and Hit Parader sure weren't running stories on this washed up southern rock band.
Two names that were on every record I found were Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts. Damn I loved Gregg's singing. It hit me deep down in my dark black heart. And this other guy Dickey Betts? He wrote those amazing instrumentals like Jessica, In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed. Pegasus, High Falls, and From The Madness Of the West. What a writer! What a guitar player! His harmonies were incredible. His singing was good enough, too. He sang their biggest hit Ramblin' Man, and wrote it. I was fortunate enough to visit the Big House in Macon Georgia and see the table at which he wrote that song.
Dickey was a lot of things to a lot of people. Like Gregg Allman, he could be the villain and hero of his own story. In my story he was a hero. I learned the history of the band and truly appreciated how Dickey kept the band going.
As the 80s progressed and Stevie Ray Vaughan and Robert Cray brought the blues and blues rock back to the mainstream, and Gregg's "I'm No Angel" brought the Brothers back into the public consciousness, they decided to reform and do a tour. From the start it appeared Dickey was bandleader. He was writing tremendous songs, playing at the height of his abilities, and even with all his personal demons he led them to record three fantastic studio albums and two ridiculously great live albums. Some of my favorite songs came from those records and Dickey wrote almost all of them: Nobody Knows, Seven Turns, True Gravity, Back Where It All Begins...
After his acrimonious split with the band in 2000, he went back out on the road with his own band, and then reformed his first solo band Great Southern. I got to see Great Southern several times, including his very last ever live performance at Peace Fest 2018. He hadn't toured in a few years at that point and I didn't think I'd ever hear the sweet tone of his Les Paul coming from a stage ever again. When I heard it that warm summer afternoon I had tears in my eyes. Hero or villain, he moved a lot of people with his music. Thank you so very much Mr. Richard "Dickey" Betts.
One of my memories of him was a beautiful fall day at the Lenox Music Inn in Lenox, Mass back in the 70's there were ballons everywhere and Dicky walked out on stage with his guitar aimed at the ballons and made it sound like machine gun, pretending to shoot them down. It was a perfect day for music, what a show.
Never saw the Allman Brothers live, but did see Dickey Betts sit in with Wet Willie at a free outside festival in New Orleans, in 1971 or ‘72. He played a cherry sunburst Les Paul. I’m glad I can say I was there. R.I.P.
only saw abb once 90s dicky bsnd great greg poor health couldnt do.much barely anything dickie carried the band ladt week i found wet willie ghits vinly he guests on a few songs liner notes cool you got to see both together
Lovely tribute to a great man, Pete. Thank you, and thanks Dickie. RIP.
RIP great guitar player and big part of Allmans sound
Thank you Pete for the tribute this one hurts, I always love his playing, songwriting and he’s a great singer. My favorite is Blue Sky, when I drive in the car in the summer time I always put on that song and singing along. I will say another album is really good by him is his first solo album Highway Call if anyone hasn’t heard it yet I highly recommend it, really good. Also go support The Allman Betts band basically the band that will celebrate Allman Brothers music with the sons of Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts (Devon & Duane), hope they will do a tribute soon for Dickey just like they do every year for Gregg. RIP Dickey Ramblin Man 🎸
RIP Dickie Betts
Great tribute Pete!
You looked really sad in this video, Pete. I felt a little choked up myself.
The grandfather of southern rock passed away today but he definitely left with us some of the most powerful and inspiring music that not inspired a whole genre but generations of guitar players everywhere rock on in heaven Dickie Betts we'll keep on rambling on and doing the best we can
Wishbone Ash is often overlooked as an influential twin lead band, kudos for the mention!
This is so sad.... 2024 is a sad year right now...
R.I.P. Dickey Betts.... 😢😭
Even worse, we lost two other musicians in the same week. Mandisa, a gospel singer, and Steve Kille, the bassist of Dead Meadow.
Went for walk yesterday and listened to “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” from the Fillmore East album to remember DB and the joy the ABB music gave me growing up
Went right here to learn what you had to say Pete. Sad, very sad day.
Also know that your a Mets fan, so sure you’ll remember Whitey Herzog. He died too
'Blue Sky' plus 'Les Brers in A Minor'! Holy smokes, what songs!
Saw him in Dewey Beach, Delaware moons ago, RIP.
He was a legend he will be missed. R.I.P. Dickie Betts
You Mentioned Allen Woody. I think I'll start my tribute right there. R.I.P. Dickey
Allman Brothers forever!!! RIP Dickie Betts
Dickey Betts was a fantastic musician in my opinion
Legend.
