That's cool that Anthony knows Cans. It's hard to pick my favorite covers. So, I'll just pull a Catino, and say that I like anything by Hipgnosis and Roger Dean. BTW, the drummer on David Gilmour was Willie Wilson. Both Rick Wills and Willie were in Gilmour's pre-Pink Floyd band Joker's Wild. Eric was right. Dennis is primarily a tattoo artist. I'm Facebook friends with some of the members, as well as Rich's wife. One of them mentioned that. Chris should be on more Prog Seat episodes

@KenGolden @ChuckAlvarez Abdul Mati Klarwein was one of my favorite cover artists. Mati's first foray into the world of album covers ended with a glorious failure. In the late 50's he was listening to jazz, a time when new artists were exploring the intersection of jazz, classical, and ethnic music. One of them was Yusef Lateef, Mati created a painting of Yusef amid colorful flowers and sent it to the musician, labeled as "Original Portrait of the Great Yusef Lateef Hand Painted by Abdul Mati". Lateef, a devoted Muslim, liked not only the painting but also the fact that it was created by a person named Abdul, undoubtedly a man of color. "Dear Bro" he replied to the artist, inviting him to meet and discuss future album covers after a set at the Five Spot jazz club in New York City. What ensued could have finished Klarwein's album art career that night. When the concert was over, Mati addressed himself to Yusef, he looked at him but continued his discussion with others at the table. So he addressed him again and introduced himself as the artist who'd sent him the portrait. Once again he was ignored and this time he didn't even look up..."The reason for the rude behavior on Lateef's behalf was simple: to him, Klarwein was of the wrong color: Prejudice works both ways. Mati was friends with Jimi Hendrix and was working on a painting for a record cover to an album that was never finished, where Jimi and Gil Evans were collaborating. Unfortunately, Jimi died during the recording and it was never released. Demand for Mati Klarwein's art in the music business increased with the popularity of Miles Davis and Santana covers. More albums featured his work in the next few years, some commissioned and some based on existing paintings. In 1970 there was a cover for Buddy Miles - 'Message to the People", and Jackie Mclean - "Demon's Dance", 1971 The Chamber Brothers - "Grain of Sand", and in 1972 Earth, Wind & Fire - "Last Days and Time", and Osibisa - "Heads".

About two years ago I was outbid on a Mati Klarwein painting. It heavily featured cats and I’m a dog person not into cats so I dropped out of the bidding. The painting didn’t sell for as much as I would have thought. Nice piece. I hope it found a good home.

Franco Battiato "Sulle Corde Di Aries" is an absolute favourite. In addition to being an avant garde masterpiece that sounds like a cross between 'Meddle' and Zappa's abstract experimentation circa 'Uncle Meat', the front cover is super spooky and I used it as my company avatar pix for over 10+ years. Really really freaked people out!!!

I also remener a Genesis Garden taken from The Nursery Cryme album. There was also some interactive stuff. You could step into the 2112 and Tales From Topographic Oceans albums. Hawkwind Space Ritual box set. There are 11 discs. One disc is a Blu-Ray. The original album remastered. The original album was made from 2 concerts. 3 concerts were recorded, but 1 not used in the album due to a technical problem. All 3 concerts are included in the set (the tech problem with the 3rd show fixed up I think). Then a 50th Ann. stereo remix of the original album. The Blu-Ray is different sound versions of the original album. It’s pretty well the same track listing on all the discs, but the shows have different improvisations. You have to be a big Hawkwind fan for this, which I am. I just got through the first full show (Liverpool). Lovin’ it! There’s also a book, with somewhat blurry photos of the band on stage & a poster.

Mati Klarwein's art, titled "Alexander's Dream", adorns that cover and it is extraordinary. Another great discussion would be "Worst Album Covers on Great Albums". I can't tell you how frustrating it is for me to love an album but only have a bland or boring album cover to look at while it's playing. Not to mention how it hurts sales of that album (or it did back in the day when people actually browsed through products in brick-and-mortar stores). A great cover can inspire a buying decision just as much as a terrible cover can cause a customer to overlook an album.

Not really prog but have to go with Tea for the Tillerman, especially since he did it himself. Mona Bon Jakon and Teaser and the Firecat were pretty cool as well.
So much great stuff from back in the day, but have to echo Steven’s pick of a “new” one, Script for a Jester’s Tear, my favourite of the Marillion covers he did. Has to be the vinyl version though.
Like so many of the panel, Relayer is my favourite RD cover, it just fits so well with the music.
Grave New World by The Strawbs, the vinyl cover with the three panel gatefold with the massive picture inside and great artwork on the front. It also came with a cool book with artwork and lyrics, something that always adds to cover.
On the Threshold of a Dream, my favourite Phil Travers cover for The Moodies, my first ever album and the one that got me into prog. Another one with a cool book, early copies had it stapled into the cover, mine didn’t and I think I prefer it. My copy was also thankfully clarifoil free - anyone old enough to remember that?
    Honourable mentions …
Nursery Cryme, which Christian mentioned. Not the best artist and the band were unhappy with the Foxtrot cover, but this one was just perfect as a cover and fit in with the music.
I have the original Lateralus CD that Chuck mentioned, really creative use of the CD format where ordinary pictures don’t usually work as well as on vinyl.
Wish you were here must deserve a call out for those amazing photos, done for real without photoshopping, and representing all those albums where you got all the bells and whistles like coming in a bag, postcards, stickers etc.
Surprised Yessongs didn’t get a mention.
Loads of stuff by Travis Smith, who I think got a passing mention.
Land of Grey and Pink, mentioned by Ken
The guy who did those weird Hieronymus Bosch type paintings for Cathedral.
Not prog, but those crazy flying elephant covers Roger Dean did for Osibisa.

Much like Steven's love of variations on an idea, I love the three Henry Cow albums with the sock. You all mentioned most of my favorites, but I'll also mention Jade Warrior, Floating World; Gentle Giant, In a Glass House (with the transparency); Genesis, Selling England by the Pound; Caravan, In the Land of Grey and Pink; Wobbler, From Silence to Somewhere, and Thick as a Brick for how much fun it is.

I don't think you can beat 'Close to the Edge' - no, not the inside gatefold, the graduated green cover with the band and album logos. Simple but, as the other Ken says, it stands out when you're flicking through the bins, partly due to the logos being at the top rather than the bottom. Other Roger Dean faves are Gun, Osibisa's 'Woyawa' and Motown Chartbusters Volume 6 (not remotely prog) though I could mention at least a dozen. Best non-Dean is Flash 'In the Can' - don't judge me!

Another cool thing about the CTTE cover is that the initial versions of it were textured--almost like a leather grain on the outside cover. They seemed to stop that on later pressings, I guess to cut costs.

Outside of Pink Floyd, my favourite (also by Hipgnosis) is The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, and not just the front cover but the entire LP package. I love the glimpes into Rael's journey and all the quirky Hipgnosis graphics. Their "surrealist realism" as you might call it is just wonderful to me.

I like Arik Roper covers like The Weirding from Astra. Pretty much blown away by many stoner, doom, psych album covers nowadays. Like the recent Superskull cover by Black Rainbows or the whole sci-fi packaging of the Ummon vinyl by Slift. Or the art of Zdzisław Beksiński (Bellwitch, Samsara Blues Experiment, King Buffalo).Fantastic stuff!

The Keys album from Mark Mangold and Jake E has great cover art, with according the booklet, a secret riddle in it that I haven't discovered yet..... I also love the Kite Parade - "Retro" artwork. (Just to name two newer releases 😀).

going to go by only albums that I own. on vinyl.
    5. Genesis - Nursery Cryme - croquet with human heads? a perfect illustration showing a pastoral scene with an undercurrent of menace like Peter Gabriel's lyrics
    4. Art Bears - Winter Songs - made to look like a medieval manuscript, it reflects the old English folk thrown into an art rock blender
    3. National Health - s/t - a hospital bed pov photo with band members and nurses and a random kid. the kid and a nurse are featured on the back, rocking out on a stage
    2. Renaissance - Turn of the Cards - a Hipgnosis concept with some fun Tarot designs
    1. Richard Wahnfried - Time Actor - a Peter Nagel painting with a baby, cups, and striped amorphous stripes

Chad, on your recommendation I looked up Captain Awkward by Moron Police, and it's a trip! Like a weird love child of Aha, Frank Zappa, and Creed. Oh, and for album covers, I'd mention the Moody Blues cover for Question of Balance, since nobody else seems to be. But I still can't believe none of you guys brought up Thick as a Brick.

    2) Harmonium - "Si On Avait Besoin D'Une Cinquieme Saison"
    3) Levitation - "Need for Not"
    4) The Spacious Mind - "Garden of a Well Fed Head" (well any of their die-cut covers)
