I Can't Dance by Genesis is the song for me that completely made me cringe especially when the three of them do that silly walk behind each other 🤦🏻‍♂️ Still hard to believe that this was the same band that made the classic Lamb Lies Down On Broadway album from the 70s

Genesis took quite a beating on this episode, didn't they?
Hearing Ken read those lyrics to the Emerson, Lake & Palmer tune was truly painful. I don't mind the closing track to And Then There Were Three, even if it isn't among my top picks on there. Agree about the Yes tune, but, then again, Tormato was never a favorite of mine. Furthermore, I lean a tad closer to Luis in that Yes is not really one of my top favorite progressive rock bands.
Oh, and it must be said that I'm fully with Chuck on VdGG: Ever since a certain episode posted (we all know it), the first thing that pops into my mind when that band comes up in these videos (or when I listen to them) is George's 'Asshat' comment; Months later, and I am STILL laughing!

I'm surprised everyone agreed that Space Dye Vest is a bad song. I get that it might feel repetitive and that the samples could be annoying but man, it's pretty alright for me, I dig the musical theme. I'd argue that there are worse songs on that record, mainly due to Labrie's vocals and some boring compositions. I can't stand Caught In A Web ("It's got a great unison solo and a good riff" good solos does not great music make), Voices is some of the worst high pitched Labrie vocals. Scarred, 6:00, Lie, great solos and vocals, I really like this record but I can't agree on that song being bad.

A bit surprised at the comment on this podcast that one of the contributors made saying they didn’t like / rate Mike Rutherford as a guitarist .
I saw Steve Hackett on his “ Selling England by the pound “ tour and his playing was sublime and made this one of my all time favourite concerts that I’ve been to .
I was lucky enough to see Genesis recently at The 02 ,London on The last domino tour .
Guitar duties were shared between Mike Rutherford and Daryl Stuermer .
I always liked Daryl’s playing but after having seen Steve Hackett , there was no comparison to him by Daryl.
Whilst Mike is not technically as good as Steve , I think he’s a very good guitarist a good example of that is his playing on Home by the sea / 2nd home by the sea on this recent Genesis tour .
It was nice to see him at times be slightly a bit aggressive in his playing , you could say that he now plays with a bit more passion / emotion as he realises he probably will never play these Genesis songs again .
Btw. I’ve seen Mike Rutherford twice before in his band Mike and the Mechanics and I’ve always enjoyed his playing .

Tony Banks also hated "After the Ordeal." "Selling England by the Pound" is a phenomenal album, but Tony Banks said the band didn't have as many ideas going into the studio as they normally had in previous albums, and therefore everything got put on the record, which he saw as a negative. Had the band had more ideas, "Ater the Ordeal" probably would not have made it on the album.

After The Ordeal is a beautiful piece of music, as attested to by The Professor of Prog. Artists aren't always the best judges of their own work and Tony Banks does not come across well in a lot of the interviews he does. He shits on ATO but is the guilty party when it comes to the chorus of I Know What I Like. He also doesn't like the wonderful Dusk, and look at all the shite he wrote post PG and particularly post SH.

Just finished watching this one yesterday. Enjoyed this episode immensely. OK, here are my 3 picks:
    1. Genesis, "Mama". I just don't need to hear Phil coughing up a hairball again. Ever.
    2. King Crimson, "Elephant Talk". I'll probably catch some flack for this one, but just not a fan of the Belew era Crimson. "Discipline" was a good album, saw the tour, but...
    3. Yes, "Don't Kill the Whale". Enough said. Huge Yes fan, but that one was a bit lame.
Some further comments on Genesis, my fave prog band of all time, but some disagreement with Ken and others, although I generally agree. To me, everything after Duke was a disappointment, largely. I really disliked most of Abacab, didn't care for their new direction. Invisible Touch was a further disappointment, except for The Brazilian (which apparently was just a jam in the studio with the tape rolling). "Shapes" had "Home by the Sea", which is great. But then we had "We Can't Dance", tied for worst with Invisible Touch, for me. "Calling All Stations" has its moments - one just can't think of this as being the same band. Would have liked for them to have at least given one more album a go with this lineup. OK, so now about "And Then There Were Three", wherein lies my disagreement with Ken. I think this is a grossly underrated album. Two Tony Banks' classics: "The Lady Lies" and "Burning Rope" (the bad edit seems to have been taken care of in the remixed edition - I still wish they had given us the full length version, which was edited down for the album). "Deep in the Motherlode" is also brilliant. Sure, Mike's not Steve on the guitar, but I thought what he did on this album was effective for the music. Saw the tour, which was great. Anyway, sorry Ken, I love this album - love every album from Trespass to Duke!
    Cheers, Brad

Camel - Remote Romance is the most horrendous song by classic prog band ever. I'm so glad that's the first thing mentioned on the show. Although I'm surprised that Jethro Tull - Farm On The Freeway or VdGG - Meurglys III were mentioned. Both are one of my favourites by those bands. Also don't get that dislike for Space Dye Vest, that's a cool ballad.
So my disliked songs by my three favourite bands are:
    1. Van der Graaf Generator - Abandon Ship! (Present, 2005)
I just couldn't choose anything from 70s VdGG, I'm just too much of the fan. But newer albums have a few songs that are either boring or mad. Abandon Ship! is a mad one - grungy guitar, sweet-sounding sax and fake-sounding organ create such a mess, I just can't digest that track at all.
    2. King Crimson - Prelude: Song of the Gulls (Islands, 1971)
Why Mr. Fripp thought that including a shitty second-hand Tchaikovsky-like orchestral instrumental is a good idea? I get angry every time I listened to Islands just because of this piece.
    3. Gentle Giant - Thank You (Giant For A Day, 1978)
I could pick at least 5 tracks from that album, but Thank You is the longest pile of sh*t in that album and it barely has any arrangement. It's just a few plain chords on guitar moving on and on and on till you die from boredom. And really uninspiring vocal delivery by Derek. Betcha Thought We Couldn't Do It is a great mention by Ken, but it at least had some energy.

Towards the end of the song, Mel Collins starts to squeal like Evan Parker. In the chaos of the drums, the sax, the terrible recording etc, Robert Fripp holds a note on his guitar and it sounds like a beacon of light. And I find it transfixes me. For me, it is lightening caught in a jar. It is possible that endurance of the build up makes the final minute of the song so special. So the song is a test of endurance, but that last minute is gold.

    One for the vine.
The received wisdom at the time was that A Trick of the Tail was a commendable holding position while Wind and Wuthering was a return to more full-on prog. In retrospect both albums are very weak compared to the PG era - we convinced ourselves they were great at the time out of desperation, clinging on to what remnants remained of the glory years.
ATOTT has aged far better, and while WAW has some obvious targets - Your Own Special Way (gak!), Wot Gorilla and the toe curling All in a mouse’s night, I’m going for One For The Vine because it cruelly masquerades as proper prog, but whereas great prog gradually reveals itself as being great over several listens, this sounds great from the get go and gradually reveals itself as being a superficial imposter.
It's like a song a schoolboy band who were fans of Genesis might write, or one of the tepid outpourings we get from some of the so called nu-prog bands.

So for Yes, I dont skip Circus of Heaven - yes its twee but I can live with it, however I concur with Steven's take on Billy Sherwood's contributions in Yes, and his solo work generally, so the one I always skip , even though I rarely listen to the album these days, is Man in the Moon from Open Your Eyes.
For ELP the first song I thought about was Taste of my Love, however that's saved by having the rehersal version on the 2001 remaster - in the ELP On Track book Mike Goode questions if that was done as a joke at Atlantic's expense - seeing as the band were forced into making the album in the first place - or that it was done to try and get it banned on the radio and thereby garner interest due to it being controversial. In any case the musics just about passable. Like Ken, I think with Love Beach there's just over half of what could have been a great album and wish that Emerson had used his Hammond. No the song that I always skip, on another album I rarely if ever listen to because, again, its mostly crap, is Daddy off of In The Hot Seat. To me that just isnt an ELP song at all - its a total Greg Lake solo song about harrowing subject matter (and I admit it may also be the case that because I had a young daughter at the time I first heard it that may have coloured my view as the back story to it is totally heartwrenching) that would have fitted better on a Lake solo album, or should have been released as a charity single. Coming as it does as the second track it sort of stops any potential flow and creates an overriding feeling of sadness - maybe if it had been the last song or added as a bonus track I wouldnt have minded so much? While Lake had had solo songs on ELP albums before they'd usually have been ELP'd enough to warrant their inclusion - yeah side 2 of Works 1 and bits of Works 2 could fall into that category though I dont tend to skip those, but I always, if I ever listen to the album, skip Daddy.
For Barclay James Harvest it pains me to say that the song I always skip is a John Lees song - I thought I may have gone for a Les Holroyd song as some of his can be a bit flaccid MOR ish and sappy, however Spud-U Like on Caught in the LIght is just - no, please dont, its rubbish.

Kansas: " Got To Rock On "...bubble gum rock from a talented prog band, worst song the original six did
Supertramp: " Ever Open Door "...the lackluster, boring ballad that keeps the " Brother Where You Bound " album from being a masterpiece. It was as though Rick Davies was told: " we need three minutes to complete the album ". Putting it as the last track was an even worse decision.
Genesis( avoiding the stuff from the Invisible Touch album on): "Who Dunnit" just a turd

Michael. Agreed with respect to Kansas, my favorite prog band. It's NOT a Kerry Livgren song, so no surprise there.

I like "Got To Rock On." "Right Away" is WAY worse than "Got To Rock On."

While "Got to Rock On" is probably the weakest song from the classic Kansas line-up, my least favorite of theirs is "I Can Fly" from Freaks of Nature. Steve just couldn't hit those high notes and it's painful to listen to his voice. Also, the baroque violin section, as lovely as it is as an isolated piece of music, doesn't quite fit with the rest of the composition

I was going to list the song "Brother Where you Bound" as one of my most hated from bands I love but 3 other songs beat it out.

I think Steve wrote Got To Rock On when he was suffering from either having his tonsils or wisdom teeth removed. I can't remember.

I have never heard anybody, not liking “ momentary lapse of reason”. Learning to fly is a very radio, friendly song, but how can you say it sucks? 🙄
