Dickey Betts, a pivotal figure in the Allman Brothers Band that pioneered Southern rock and impacted the jam band scene, passed away Thursday at his residence in Florida, as reported by his longtime manager David Spero.

in october 2003, i suffered a massive stroke. responding to a message from my son scott, dickie forwarded to me a box filled with great southern cd's, autographed picture encouraging a speedy recovery, and a cd that included a studio show in long island, featuring the marshall tucker band, 6 numbers from dickey, including jessica and dickies rendition of b.b. kings, the thrill is gone. thank you mr. betts. rest in peace. bill dailey

Just think - Allman Brothers - Live at the Fillmore East - that album (we used to crank in high school skippin class, in the car), sounds just as good IF NOT BETTER than it did in 1976. Statesborough Blues, and I Musta Did Somebody Wrong.
Yes, Dickey Betts was one of the finest acoustic guitar pickers of all time!! So sad that he passed!!! He was one of the original members and started the Alllman Bros band with Gregg and Duane!!! Love this video of Dickey!! Love the Allman and Betts music for many years and always will, please check out Gregg and Dickey with others playing a live version of Sweet Melissa on RUclips!!! To my eyes , Mr Betts looked like a guy in his late 50's in this video ,rather than someone in his late 70's or 80 years old ! He was a rather special ,gifted , talented musician ,wasn't he ? His mind must have been like a computer to have made music look as easy as he did ? RIP ,you are immortal now . Condolences from Scotland.

Mr Betts threw a shirt from the stage that i caught. Later when i got home..i saw it was signed. Many great times seeing the Allmans. RIP Dickey!
That's cool. I was fortunate to be in front row Great Southern concert, he lean over and sign my Duane Allman shirt I was wearing. Dicky is one of the best.

It was the '70s, I was in Navy and barreling down the mountains of Pennsylvania in my '69 Barracuda on my way home to Chicago on leave. Blue Skies was on the tape deck, and of course, I hit the gas with such a great traveling song. It was a wonderful time to be young and free. Thanks so much Mr. Betts!
I'm so jealous! I can just imagine everything you just said! God I wish I wasn't born in 1993 I wish I was born back then so I could have experience the late 60s and all of the 70s and 80s! I can just imagine it and how it was back then it sounds so much like a dream come true to have lived in that time as a young adult!

This one hits especially hard. Dickey showed everyone how two guitars playing extended melodic lines could create beauty, passion, and with more than a streak of blues. Even Les Paul was taken with Dickey's musicality and technique.
A one of a kind guitarist. Dickey outdid almost everyone with his expressive, melancholic musicality. With his aways impressive improvisational style, he was more than a master of the instrument. For my generation, he wasn't a guitar god, together with Duane, they were God.
Jam on Mr. Betts and thank you, a true Allman brother to the end.

I only saw him once, with the Allmans, the night I graduated from high school in 1973. Brothers and Sister tour, memorable night!. Dickey saved that band after the loss of Duane.

@steveb.4809 that's the first time I saw the Brothers too in Chicago, '73. I think at the Stadium? My older friends that saw the original band with Duane were like what's the point? Figured Duane Allman was the heart and soul, plus Oakley was gone as well? Couldn't have been further from the truth, that concert kicked some serious a$$! Actually in hindsight, kudos to Dickee Betts during that period 👏 Because he really worked hard onstage filling in both guitar parts! Just amazing, 🙏 RIP DICKEE BETTS!
Dickey Betts is thee guitarist that influenced my style of playing more than any other guitar player. I was devastated to hear of his passing. I never miss a Duane Betts show in SoFla. When I am alone I always play Blue Sky and Jessica on my guitar, and when I learned and perfected it, I had tears in my eyes, as I do now. Ramble on Rambling man. And Rest in Peace.

Allman Brothers Band is my all time favorite group. I love them so much I named my ranch “ONE WAY OUT”. All the hiking trails are named after their albums or songs. Just a great group of talented musicians whose music will be played forever. Thanks for the memories my friend. Much love for you all❤

Was fortunate enough to see Dickey make a guest appearance with the Marchall Tucker band at the Santa Monica Civic 1974.... The Outlaws were the opener.. One of my favorite concerts ever....
I remember Dickey being kicked out of the ABB band and always wanted him to be reinstated and it just never happened it always kinda of let down to me as much as I love Warren and Derek and always continued to go see the Allmans no matter what but I am soooo Grateful to have seen Dickey play numerous times with the Allmans he was no doubt a founding father and driving force. The Back Where It All Begins tour was so magical and had a cult following partially due to Jerry's passing but The Allmans were always my band and I miss them Dearly. Thanks Mr Betts!!! Being a guitar player I would always expect him to play that Gold Top Paul but I was surprised to see a Red 335 or a PRS at shows and that was always cool to see him use something different because he used that Gold Top a lot.
This man was too good of a player if that's possible. He will never be forgotten. I will see you in the next world sir.

he was pretty good with this Allman Bros. band back in the day of the slidest Duane. There was chemistry. Duane was the force , once he was gone, Dickey should have formed a new band.

He and his original bandmates meant the world to me when I was growing up in the 1970's. I believe all of those men are passed now except maybe drummer Jaimo? RIP, the great Dickie Betts.

Yes Sandy to be totally honest , There was no actual original band. It was created by Duane and Dickie , it was their brainchild to form a band . I did stray from the comment but I felt Warren was important and a very big contributing member as with Butch and needed to be mentioned . When I read Dickie had passed, it truly affected me And reading all the comments along with my own thoughts , my age, and my own mortality sort of put me in a fog , HA HA HA 😂
This man was unique among rock guitarists. While most of the rest were revolving around the Blues and minor pentatonics, Dickey’s influences and writing was influenced by a Country sound and major pentatonics. Absolutely appreciated his unique musical character in his songs. What a great harmonist and counterpoint to Duane and Greg! This man’s contributions were huge. Thank you and RIP Dickey Betts Your sound changed music for the better and you will be greatly missed.

Oh man. Dickey was the best. Saw him at Biddy Mulligans club in Chicago in 1991. Great show. Small club. I was standing right in front of him like 3 feet away. Great memories.
Seen Him Solo in 1988 on Pattern Disruptive Tour with Warren Haynes and Great Opening Band at the Park West . 2 years Later Reunited with Greg Alman and ABB for 7 Turns on the Highway Tour in Tinley Park. Also seen him Greg Alman & Dickey reunited in 1986 at Holiday Star in Merrivlle indiana.
I saw him many times in the 1990s-2000s. He was a true joy to watch, eyes. Closed in concentration, foot stomping,left arm wrenching Goldies neck getting that beautiful vibrato. One of my all time favorite, thanks for the music, you'll never be forgotten and always loved❤

First concert I went to was Allman Brothers and Outlaws 1975 Roanoke Va. saw them I think 4 other times. You were great Dickie, your music will live on
I wish it was a Sunny, cool breezy Saturday back in 1970 with The Allman Brothers up on an outside stage with 50,000 people smoking and drinking and rocking to their amazing music....But Reality sets in and we have lost yet another//Life is great but Death defeats it every time...my stomach hurts, the tears are flowing and I just don't know what I'm gonna do....

Underrated because he is rarely mentioned as one of the best guitarists out there. Hie intro to the live version of In Memory of Elizabeth Reed was groundbreaking. This was pre Jeff Beck Blow by Blow.

Must have seen him 30 times w ABB in the 90s. Another dozen times w his bands. Got his autograph at the TLA in Philly after the breakup in 2000. Thank you Dickey for the soundtrack of my life. Your gift changed my life for the better. You were larger than life. God bless

Allman Brothers Live at the Fillmore East was the album that taught me how to play guitar, at age 12, starting in 1970. Did my first bar gig at age 16, playing all Allman Brothers. Thanks, Dicky, for the great guitar lessons! RIP
Dickey contributed many articles and lessons in the guitar magazines which I used to purchase. He had a significant influence on me. He will be missed but not forgotten.

Everyone I knew in high school and college had the Fillmore album when it was first released and followed them afterwards. Eat a Peach was the big one. Get high and listen to that. Thanks Dickey.

The best slide man to grace the planet gave us some of the best music we will ever get to enjoy!!Say what you will but they set the bar for Southern Rock!! Saw him with Great Southern and after the show my wife and I went across the street to Dennys and Dickey was sitting with his wife. And I got him go sign my ticket. I had it tucked away all these years so hearing he had passed on I dug it out . Very good. Memory

I saw the Allman Brothers live at Jeppesen Stadium in Houston in 1974 or 1975 when I was in High School. The best ever and no other concert ever matched up to that. All the Allman Brothers songs were top notch, but Dicky Betts wrote In Memory of Elisabeth Reed (and many other songs) and it just kicked ass. Wow, time has flown on by. They defined Southern Rock and were legends in their own time. I wore out 3 Fillmore Albums before I got them on disc.
Duane encouraged his writing...perhaps that's where he & Gregg butted heads 🌠
I saw ABB for the first time when I was 14 (my 2nd concert. First was Black Sabbath)...I'm 67, now..I've been to hundreds of shows since..That ABB show is still the best I'd ever attended..Absolutely blew me away!..I was an instant fan..To me, "Elizabeth Reed" is their best song, no disrespect to Gregg and his singing. He was one of a kind voices..RIP, Dickey...Only Jaimoe left..Hard to fathom.

The man's a legend & I think he knew we all will listen to anything he would write & any Allman fan knows Liz Reed was the most amazing composition in Rock. Dickey was never a joke he like Duane was the real deal. He's way to modest for being one of the best we have had in blues Rock.

My best memory of Dickey Betts is when he toured with Gregg Allman with his own band. It was in a small club in Providence Rhode Island called the living room. It was the most crowded place I’ve ever been in my whole life. I was standing right next to the stage and you couldn’t leave that spot or you’d never get back even close Gregg Allman was touring with a blind pianist. Every time this dude took a solo Gregg Allman was fixated. This was also the first time Gregg Allman had gotten his wish he was touring with a full horn section and it sounded fantastic. I saw the same band with Gregg Allman open up for Stevie Ray Vaughan. It was two weeks before Stevie Ray Vaughan died. The Gregg Allman band was better. That was probably the best concert I have ever seen

What can I add... I saw the Allman Brothers Band live circa 1980 at Shea's Buffalo Theater. My Absolute guitar hero was Dickey Betts. Such that I eventually bought a Gibson Les Paul Historic Gold Top. Over the years I saw Dickey Betts at least 8 times. His melodies will live forever. I heard that years ago he would just show up at a bar called Peg's near Bradenton and play. I had a patient who was a former roadie for the Allman Brothers and he said Dickey was a nice and genuine and generous guy. I would have loved to meet him. The world has lost a virtuoso. Regards to his family. Perhaps I'll meet his son Duane someday. Duane has listened to his father and as he's matured is embodying the skills and determination that will allow him to carry the "torch" forward. RIP Dicky. Your road will go on forever...
