Gregg Allman (and Redd Foxx) on Letterman, November 18, 1987

- Gregg performs "I'm No Angel" as Sid Mcginnis makes perhaps his only mistake in his 31-year run on Dave's shows, starting the song a half step higher but correcting himself as soon as Will Lee and Gregg come in.
In the next segment, Gregg begins to chat with Dave but is interrupted by a "surprise" walk-on by Redd Foxx.
Redd Foxx was the last of several other "surprise" walk-ons throughout the show's hour: Christopher Reeve, Willard Scott, Susan Saint James, Peter Allen, and a joke walk-in by Biff Henderson.
Gregg had sat in with the band, and he was keenly aware of that night's "surprise walk-on" theme, so he was fully prepared for Foxx's spot.
I uploaded another Gregg Allman appearance on Letterman, which includes two music performances and one full interview, here: • Gregg Allman on Letter...
Folks -- please read the description beneath the video for an explanation on the botched beginning and Redd Foxx's interruption. That way we can hopefully stop the incessant misplaced outrages and theories.
sorry Don but you and I both know damn well we are💒🎶🎤😮😮😮😮 preaching to the choir🙄😉😂
I read the description after watching. I thought the key change was intentional. They didn't miss a beat correcting it.
Classic and classy Redd and Gregg
Good correction on his part though. Imagine how bad it could have been if he had continued playing in that key. It would have been the funniest episode of letterman ever

Great clip Don!
I cried for 3 days when he passed. Still crying today over Dicky passing a few days ago. Greg Almond was the most soulful white boy to ever sing a note!! Almond Brothers is and always will be my most favorite band and Greg, is my most favorite male vocals of this entire life time. R. I. P. Gregg! I know your brother was waiting for long time to see you again and, well Dicky just had to join. Guess he knew y'all would be Heaven's house band and just couldn't let the show go on without him. I love you all 3 soooo much and can't wait to hear y'all when I get in!!!
It’s extremely painful when our favorites pass away. I loved the almond brothers band. I wanted to point out one other soulful singer… His name was Cory Wells and he was in the band three dog night he passed away approximately six or seven years ago. I hope the hell there is a rock ‘n’ roll Heaven somewhere out there. ☁️⭐️🌫
Oops… Should be Allman
Cry over people you don't even know or how to spell his name, come on now.
Almond..😂 or was it peanut, or pistachio?
Yeah, I cry every day for old Gregg, Dwayne , Dicky. When o when will it stop
There it goes again. Sob, tear, sniff.
Greg was a class act. In every interview he was respectful and very humble. His talent far surpassed his problems with drugs and alcohol which he eventually overcame. God rest his soul. Miss you man.
Wait, he said something? Did I miss it! Haha
He kicked alcohol heroine cocaine and cigarettes all at one time. That is legendary

And Cher... Don't forget his Worse Addiction...😉
I miss him too. It really hit me when he passed.
The best voice ever. Class act. ML&R
Ran into Greg in Macon, Ga at a convenient store off exit 6. Amazingly, no one else was there except for a couple of Huddle House customers. Greg was filling his Harley and was saying he needed to ride with me as a joke because I bought a 12 pack. I walked over to the pump and shook his hand. I never acknowledged that he was a superstar and after a couple of laughs we went separate ways. Just a humble and kind man that was larger than life who felt like a friend to everyone.
what an amazing encounter!
Wow❤
Great and humble
In Boynton Beach Fla Derek and Susan came into the Fish Depot bar n grill and hung out and partied with me and my friends until the bar closed! They were awesome and fun.
How cool!! Can I as what year was that?
Met Gregg at a dive bar looking at the Saint Augustine Bridge of Lions. He wandered in and sang ~5 songs with the house band, with maybe 15 people inside. Very down to earth and softspoken. Great vocals...
Saw him do a solo show in 90s In a small but very popular venue in Southern New England Just Gregg,a stool ,a guitar. He was😃👍👍 absolutely SUPERB‼️‼️🎶📻🌜✨🌌✨🌛..REDD FOXX I ALSO ADOOOORRE!!💙

The Allman Brothers band was a musical gift we all got to enjoy. It is ridiculous how good those guys were
Nothing like Django Reinhardt!
I got to see them live back in the 90’s. This is when it was the original members, Allen Woody on bass & Warren Haynes in place of Duane of course. It was an awesome outdoor concert.

gregg stood in no ones shadow, one of the best singers in rock history, and having a brother who is definitely one the best lead guitarists to have lived, whipping post and one last silver dollar did it for me,RIP YOU GENIUS YOU
Gregg was such a cool dude. Redd Foxx bursts in and Gregg was cracking up and it's clear the two were friends. Rest in peace to both men. Awesome video.
So cool that they knew each other. Maybe he knew Duane also. Redd Foxx. A former long haired Hippie. I can see it! Rip to Gregg and Redd. Big fans of both.
I have a friend (deceased) who ended up in rehab with Duane in CA. He was reportedly pretty introverted. I guess there are stories of him being cranky (chris robinson has a funny one). My buddy said he was a cool guy - I'm thinking any negative stories were due to him being "not well" (in withdrawal)
My friend said he told him about the good old days of 90% pure white heroin... lol
Those were the days my friend, we thought they’d never end.
@maxx mabemwe it does fly.... I tell my kids all the time..... just be busy being a kid...... don't be in no hurry to grow up....... I would go back in a heart beat the good and bad times

Was fortunate enough to see Gregg Allman and Friends at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach around 1999-2000. God had to have been the Blessing behind it because my Army buddy flew in from California and I told him and my wife at the time that we were going to take the camper and go to the beach. Well that Saturday I said "let's see who is playing at the House of Blue". Low and behold it was Gregg and Friends. What a concert and what a Blessing it was.
I noticed this show aired on November of 1987. My folks were in Vegas in September of 1987, and I remember my mom telling me she saw Redd playing a slot machine there. My mom went up to Redd and asked him if he was Redd Fox, and Redd replied, "yes I is."
RIP to both Redd And Greg. 2 Legends in music and entertainment history. Great job thanks for posting.
If we could only hear him sing live one more time!!!
Hear his music. He never dies
Maybe you can! He,s no Angel !,I loved him too,I liked Duane Allmans Midnight Rider, it was slower!
I swear I didnt know he was gonna do it!

Two giants, Foxx and Allman. Man how I miss the old David Letterman!
My God you are SOOOO right.T.V the way it use to be.R.I.P to both Redd Foxx and Greg Allman.
Letterman on NBC was the best. He was good on CBS but his NBC days were classic.
It was the best back in the day.
Fuk yea early Dave the best
@@don62snodgrass
Absolutely right!
The NBC time period was magic... new, fresh, exploring quirky fun, and the call-backs were legend.
I had just hot a state of the art STEREO tv from RCA. Few shows were in stereo,... but that stereo LED coming on, right when the Late Show started, awesome.
Musical performances that were killer, w/Paul and the Most Dangerous Band... tight, pros.
Night after night, the heyday.
2:18 love Gregg's natural howl. Love Gregg Allman, period.
Redd saying "my hair used to be that long"...priceless!
😂 I was struggling to picture it. Then I recalled my (caucasian) mother’s unfortunate foray into the afro hairstyle in the mid 70’s.
So badass solid so f ing cool
What a voice. Him and his brother and the allmans band gave birth to the 1970s.
Letterman said that the next night he was having on Carly Simon and Hunter S. Thompson. Jesus Christ, we'll never see days like that again.
That show’s here - ruclips.net/video/7sOcCl1IjMs/видео.html
Greg giving a standing ovation to another legend. Classy.
Greg seemed happy and healthy and clearly having a good time and Red Foxx was in wonderful spirits and health as well. If you have never heard Red Roxx do his real act, then you are missing something special.
He's bloated from booze
I miss those days the simplest of things and we were happy.
Me too. Baby Boomers had the best generation. Never to be duplicated ❗✌️💖🤙
What a voice. Most singers only wish they could sound that soulful.
Wish we could go back to this day & time...😊

Redd foxx with Aunt Esther was the best comedy EVER!!!!!
You ever hear any of Lawanda Page's comedy albums, she was just as raw as Red or Richard Pryor was in the late 70's
They were great together. In real life they loved eachother as great friends. I've seen an interview before with red talking about their friendship and he said she was a wonderful woman
Redd, not red
“You fish-eyed fool”‼️ Aunt Esther on Sanford and Son
@Hope Diamond Watch it sukkah!
Pretty cool how quickly the band adjusted to starting out in the wrong key, didn't miss a beat! I'm sure it was the bands mistake Gregg knows what key he plays his own song in. And I must say his vocal on the song was flawless! One of the greats!
Ya, I was looking to see if anyone else caught that. It sounded like the Bass player screwed up. Greg looked over at him,.. and the Bass player was sort of smiling sheepishly..
It was Sid the guitarist, he starts the intro in the wrong key
Sid started in the wrong key lol
We lost Gregg Allman today at age 69. RIP, 5/27/17 He had quite the career.
They both died right around the age of 70, these two had a great connection, two legends on that stage!
Gregg seemed like a cool, quite guy. Awesome voice and talent. He will be missed greatly.
He had but eventually beat his demons. He was, at heart, a Southern gentleman as this video clearly displays.
He did a movie whose name escapes me where he played a badass drug dealer. He was perfect for the role. He was great in it. Damn wish I could recall the name.
Rv4 Guy The movie 🎥 was called "RUSH" starring Jason Patric and Jennifer Jason Leigh . That was a good movie and I agree Gregg played the part perfectly. It came out in 1991.
I don't know I'm a northerner but when I travel through the South I was kind of taken back by the people down there there's a certain coolness about all of them it's a shame that the North and the South had so many well or maybe one thing that we just didn't see eye to eye on to Shane we tried to kill each other

Addylicious Joyal , I read in Rolling Stone Mag that Greg shot Duane in the foot so he would flunk his physical after he got drafted. What a great little brother.
Michael Oedy I understood Gregg shot his own foot, not Duane. It was Duane's idea. Gregg read up on the anatomy of the foot and picked the best spot. Just what I read.
Michael Oedy interesting. ..Just glad Music lives Forever and the Memories too 🌷👍
brenda gans , you are correct. Duane was exempt from the draft in 65' because he was the eldest son. Gregg did do it himself. Duane called the ambulance before Gregg did it,....sort of daring him. Great story.
