Not country in the slightest. They were referred to as “Southern Rock” but Gregg always said that they were nothing but a blues band that happened to be from the South. But not a hint of country in there, BTW. Some Jazz, sure.
Give Warren Haynes credit too. He was a perfect fit to play with Dicky and provided a great deal of leadership that resulted in bringing Derek along. Thus, an extra two-plus decades of success. Don't believe it would have happened with anyone else but Haynes. Good stuff. Thanks for posting performances.
The Haynes/Betts duo is honestly one of the greatest in music history. Duane was a brilliant guitarist and had so much left to give the world musically, but died way too young. Warren Haynes is a brilliant guitarist in his own right and fit the Allman's style perfectly.
Was honored to open up for Dickie Betts. The stage was packed tight with his bands gear. His band graciously told us to use their amps and drums so we would have room to play . Then his band mates treated my band mates to drinks after the show. What a great night
To all modern musicians on the radio, this is what talent looks like, i know you've never seen it before so take some notes though you may not know where to start. The last big band orchestra playing with arguably the best rock band. Priceless artistic talent never to be duplicated again. RIP to all, hope to here you guys again on the other side.

What brilliance? My understanding is that he shared lead guitar with Betts, and Gregg and Betts were the singer-songwriters. So why did they even need Duane?
The Brothers were the greatest show band in the history of R&R, imho, and Gregg Allman was the best white blues singer I ever heard. RIP Duane, Berry, Gregg, and Butch. You'll never be forgotten by those who saw and heard you.

I never tire of this video! And, with Johnny and Doc. Wonderful music you left for us to enjoy. ... thinkin' about the old days... Never to be forgotten.
I clearly remember those times from the early 1990s. I thought how the guys still sounded so good, including Gregg's voice. I also remember thinking "someday, THESE will be the good old days". And here we are.
So cool seeing Doc Severson again. The man would hit these notes possibly above high C, and his eyeballs would look like they were ready to pop! This showing is a first for me, and I almost never missed Carson.
This was true late night entertainment. A comedic legend, one of the greatest rock bands in history along with the fabulous Tonight Show Orchestra. The current crop of late night "entertainers" are absolute crap compared to this . .
The best music you'll ever hear. Ultra good musicians playing really well for and with each other. Jazz, blues and rock, 100% original American music. Fusion.
Every member of the Tonight Show band was an A list jazz musician in his own right. The Allman Brothers went toe to toe with them and the mutual respect was obvious. I would have loved to hear the after show jam sessions after these shows.
Reminds me of high school, when they used to practise in the old Hatcher building below Lanier (Central) High School, and we occasionally got impromptu concerts at lunch! Not sure who it was, but one day someone yelled out a windows, 'how do we sound?"...yeah, we went nuts... principal hated them. Been listening to this for years and still love it.
Warren and Dickey together were SOOOOOOOOOOOOO close to the magnificence of Duane and Dickey together. Gah, what an incredible group, augmented by Doc and his guys. Musical Valhalla.............
Doc absolutely dug in deep for his solo on "Kind of Bird"; watch him reach for that high note. Dickey and Warren both matched as tight as ever, and cheers for the birthday boy today, Butch, for blasting away on the kit.
RIP Gregg, Johnny and Doc. These clips are smokin! Growing up in the 60's everyone watched the Ed Sullivan Show for great musical performances. When you were older you could stay up and watch Carson at 1130pm who had on the next generation of comedians plus some great music.
Neither band was going to treat the collaboration with anything but the most respect and their absolute best effort. Gotta love real professionals! I know this level of professionalism is still out there, too bad we really don’t get the chance to see it in today’s TV market.
Absolutely love this band, exceptional talent everyone. Saw them perform live at the Atlanta Pop Fest in Byron, Ga. If you want to experience the feeling of that good ole boy southern blues, jazz, rock fusion may I suggest you get a copy of Live At the Fillmore, Allman Bros. BAND! YOU WON'T REGRET IT.
I was at Atlanta 2nd in Byron also. 3 days of intense 105 degree heat. Thank God for the river. Did you see Hendrix ? Read my post my friend. You may have a flashback however. 😁
Great show! I was lucky enough to have been there! It was the first time I'd been to the Tonight Show. If I remember right.., Warren & Johnny (Neel) made it possible for me to get in with them. I remember Gregg being really nervous.. He always got nervous before. "True Gravity" was one of Dickey's instrumentals from his LP before the Brothers reformed. Great shit! That band was a force of nature. They were all really proud of being on the show with Johnny Carson..
Don't be sad that the good old days are gone... Be glad that you got to live in them..
I am glad for your comment...because I do often get sad about the past being gone. Your words reminded me of lyrics to an Eagles song.....If I never see the good old days shining' in the sun

Having seen every act in the business, and being a drummer on the side, Johnny Carson knew great music, and he loved the Brothers.
Charlie Jervi: Johnny Carson was also a drummer.
Very true. My husband is a drummer of 40years. Said A,Bros were one of his top 3favs.Drums forever.Chicago
@@janetmobilia8078 y'all know who co-wrote the tonight show theme? Paul Anka w/J Carson
@@RichardMcLamore really eh? That's awesome. Cheers
How have i missed this extraordinary video all these years?!!!!!!! Hilarious the Allmans playing with the suit and tie guys!!
Perfection. Absolutely the best.
Absolutely killin' it! I challenge anyone to name a group that played with more power, precision, and skill. RIP, Gregory. I never knew you but I always felt you were my brother.

Tower of Power, early Chicago, were powerhouse bands. Allman’s were great but for me, when Dickey got kicked out, the live shows suffered.
true, trucks bores me to tears. just saw him & Susan. I left after 5 songs. monumental boredom
I miss you Gregg. Every day in every way. So thankful for the 7 shows I was lucky enough to see. Thanks boys.
WOW, so tight!!! Dickey was at his prime, 20 years after Duane's passing. Love their sound then and now. God Love rock and roll!!!
This was true late night entertainment. A comedic legend, one of the greatest rock bands in history along with the fabulous Tonight Show Orchestra. The current crop of late night "entertainers" are absolute crap compared to this . .
That’s an insult to crap.
Incredible, the brothers and the tonight band absolutely rocked it. I miss those days!
The best music you'll ever hear. Ultra good musicians
playing really well for and with each other.
Jazz, blues and rock, 100% original
American music. Fusion.
All MAN...!! Thanks YuTube for this recommendation - August 2024
says a lot for the allman bros playing w one of the great horn sections great performance and great musicianship from both sides. spectacular !
Paul Bissonnette yup
I headed up to 11, Am I dual zone speakers rocking out
EVERY TIME I hear the opening of "Good Time Thing", EVERY TIME....that is enough to get my heart started.
Doc and his band had mucho respect for the Allman Bros....Great fusion
I’m Jeff Marder and I approve this post! I was on this show along with Don Rickles. Thanks for time capsule. ❤🎤🎤
Holy cow. What a power field of musical talent. Mind blowing!
Augmentation indeed there, Doc! 👍👍
Every member of the Tonight Show band was an A list jazz musician in his own right. The Allman Brothers went toe to toe with them and the mutual respect was obvious. I would have loved to hear the after show jam sessions after these shows.
The ABB and Doc with his band. Wow!
before & after show jams would be awesome to see. I am interested in Doc's reflection on these shows. sadly Tommy & Ed are no longer with us
@@bbb8997 Too bad we weren't in the studio audience that day.
100% brother
And sisters
Thanks Allman Brothers Band,it has been great!!The music got me through years of different shxx!
The Allman Brothers were original, cool dudes. I am glad that I saw them twice in concert. Boy, could they jam.
I am so grateful that these guys taught Derek Trucks well before they passed.
Yes !!!! Love the Tedescji Trucks band.... so glad the family tradition is still alive !!!
Warren and Dickey together were SOOOOOOOOOOOOO close to the magnificence of Duane and Dickey together. Gah, what an incredible group, augmented by Doc and his guys. Musical Valhalla.............
really miss duane. tremendous talent, lost at such a young age.
Real musical talent. Gregg sounds great. Johnny really enjoyed them. Doc Severinsen is an amazing trumpeter.
Where's the WOW button when you need it? This is GREAT!
Thank you Allman Brothers for Being a Big part of my Life,,,,,
Wow! Music was music back then, what talent!
Was at Fillmore East for the live recording of Whipping Post in 1971. Grateful to have experienced so much great music.
Glad this showed up. Had vcr of both performances, but didn’t get chance to digitize. RUclips at its best.
It's hard to explain to someone who wasn't thee, it was an amazing era that will never be duplicated.
He loved Chuck berry and bb king, had them on many times
I think Doc is still kicking
@@larrycornwell4626 He is still around...in his 90s, getting close to 100!
Neither band was going to treat the collaboration with anything but the most respect and their absolute best effort. Gotta love real professionals! I know this level of professionalism is still out there, too bad we really don’t get the chance to see it in today’s TV market.
The second concert my dad ever took me to was The Allman Brothers Band while Dickey Betts was still in the band
Any rock music containing quality brass is superb!
Love the horns
"The brass kicks ass!"
- Bill Champlin
That tribute to Byrd was breathtaking! Where’s the WOW button!
