  • The history of rock music is filled with tragedy and heartbreak, and yet it feels like the members of the Allman Brothers Band have still suffered more than most. The blues-rock jam band first rose to prominence in 1969. However, just a few years later, Duane Allman, whose guitar stylings were crucial to the band’s unique sound, would die in a motorcycle accident. The band soldiered on, but bassist Berry Oakley would also die not long after, and the band was never the same. From the band in-fighting to some members' destructive drug use, let’s take a look at the sad and tragic truth about the Allman Brothers Band.

When my goddaughter was very young her mother would sing to her every night before bed. I was there often enough that I began to worry I would be asked to sing to her, and I could never say no to her. I remembered the lyrics to an old song that said what I wanted to say to her. So I tracked down the song and practiced the one verse that was short and sweet. I got pretty good, but never had to sing to her. Since then I've learned it was a love song from Dickey Betts to his wife. I also learned that Dickey and Duane each soloed and then seamlessly played together. "You're my Blue Sky. You're my sunny day. Lord you know it makes me high when you turn your love my way." I wish I could find video of Duane and Dickey playing "Blue Sky."

Whipping Post, followed by Dreams. Quintessential Gregg Allman and ABB music.
Its the pain he expressed and how the band enhanced that with their playing. As a pro-
fessional guitar player for over 50 years, I can also say In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed

Gregory absolutely wrote "Midnight Rider" at Idlewild... He bookends The Allman's illustrious career with his last album, "Southern Blood" at Fame, where Duane CREATED the genre SOUTHERN ROCK. Wilson Picket doing "Hey Jude" with him shredding the guitar as scat vocals being sung over him. Soft spoken, with the gypsy soul of a poet,a wicked sense of humor, and an Adonis of a man... that's how I will always remember him. I miss you Gregory. ❤❤

Duane does not perform on the well-known version of Melissa, from Eat A Peach, which was recorded as a tribute to Duane after his death. The slide guitar is performed by Dickey Betts, but is based on a demo of the song recorded with The 31st of February, performed by Duane and Gregg, with Butch Trucks on drums. I believe it was recorded in 1967. That cut was released on an album called “Duane and Gregg Allman” in 1972. I believe the original recording is the first studio recording of Duane playing slide guitar.

About 20 years ago the Allman Brothers came to play an outdoor concert in Santa Fe. A friend of mine worked at the hotel where they were staying and said I should stop by. Greg sure enough stopped into the bar. He went up on stage and borrowed a guitar, and played a couple of songs. Three or four feet away from where I was sitting. After his little mini set, he sat down at our table because one of my friends there was from Savannah. What a nice guy. He was a Civil War and history buff. I never would have guessed this. Memorable. More memorable than the concert they played the next evening.

They were family. We were family. It's hard to explain. They were so much a part of our lives and dearly loved by the fans. As many comment here, a very unbalanced account of this great band. And no mention of how Dickey picking up the reins after the deaths of Duane and Berry died, carried ABB forward. And no, Ramblin' Man, the band's only top 10 single, was a Betts composition, along with timeless ones like Elizabeth Reed, Blue Sky and more. This piece focused on all the dark and not much of the light of this still beloved band.

My grandma Ima took me to visit Duane Allman and Barry Oakley's grave at Rose Hill cemetery as a ten yr old while I was visiting her from Calif in 1977. Her son-my uncle John was a young district D.A in Macon in 1973 and was the one who prosecuted Greg and several of the mobsters. In 1992 I was at my favorite music store in Healdsburg, CA, and in walked the man himself w/his minder. Mr. Allman was living in Marin County (San Rafael.) for a brief time and wanted to take a road trip up north to Sonoma County. He was a mess, but laughed and freaked out when I told him this story. You cannot get more serendipitous than that.

Being a singer/songwriter from Muscle Shoals, and working on Nashville of course I knew Gregory and met Dickie many times. No matter how much Gregory was painted with a broad brush of being cloaked in sadness, he would ALWAYS say that he was NOT melancholy. It just simply was NOT who he was. Eternal optimist. Gypsy soul, heart of a poet, Southern Gentleman through and through. Wicked sense of humor and an Adonis of a man. Such humility. Dickie, on the other hand, was much rougher around the edges. Not as enlightened. A little TOO full of himself. I'll leave it as that. I still miss you, Gregory. ❤❤

Just reciting the tragic aspect of their years and not mentioning "At Fillmore East" concerts which are revered as the greatest live blues/rock performance since the guitar went electric just tells you how shallow this article is. The absolute beauty of the improvisation and emotions Duane and Dickey laid down along with Gregg's original bluesy voice supported by an excellent drums and bass is pure musical magic.

Like many other bands from that time period their story was tragic. I loved the Allman Brothers Band. As crazy as this sounds I totally fell in love with Greg when I saw that interview with Dan Rathers. I was at my sons house when I turned on the outside TV looking for some music when I heard the news of Greg’s death. I was totally overwhelmed with grief that I cried for days. My son let me cry on his shoulder for awhile and I kept turning channels to see if there was some mistake made. Sadly the news was true. For Christmas that year my son got me the last album he recorded. I’ve only been able to play it once since that time. It speaks of his death. I’ll listen to it again some day but it still seems too fresh in my mind of that fateful day. Sounds crazy I know. That interview was so honest and humbling you couldn’t help but love him.

I was at the Saturday early show where about half of the Live At Fillmore album came from - about 12 rows back dead center. Saw them three times at the Fillmore East. This show was probably one of the best shows they ever played. They were not the same after Duance died - I saw them once after he passed and that was it for me.

If you remember they were back up to Johnny Winter at those shows. My friend went Friday and everyone was a walking out on Johnny Winter and Bill Graham reversed the order. I was there on the closing weekend at the late show on Friday and 9/19 at Stonybrook. I did see them with Warren and Derek and they were pretty great.

With the talent Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks, a sober Gregg brought the band full circle. Back to the true sound, as close as he could get it, to Duane's original vision for the band. And hearing the band at that time, they did a damn good job of it! I think Duane, watching from above was totally proud and pleased by it.

@@DavidSmith-ss1cg Oh wow, you said Gregory, I guess you are a true academic, a true student of Allman lore. I've read both books and I much preferred the book written by an amateur writer. Gregg's book is a ramble at best and his book was a chore to go through. As for which book has fabulous drug stories and knowledge of girlfriends I'll leave that to you. Which book has the most of those revelations? Maybe you would take offense at Freeman calling Gregg Allman a man child at the end of his book for still being hooked on cocaine and other substances. He too was a fan and he was disappointed in Gregg. Gregg's book was mostly Gregg talking to a tape recorder and then it was typed up and turned into a book. It is hardly a literary work. But if you feel you are a more loyal fan and a less judgemental person then prefer his poorly written book to a well written book. And yes, Freeman based a lot of his book on actual KNOWLEDGE of what is truly known about the band, arrests, articles, court cases, stuff Gregg was not going to talk about. Like, take this video, it is full of Allman dirty secrets. Take a transcription of this video, and it would be a better book than what Gregg put together.

Dickie wanted and demanded the Band be about him...It was not about him, it was the Allman Brothers Band for a REASON! Gregg loved all the men he played with and was easy going, but sooner or later to quote SRV "You cannot stay at the party forever" it will kill you!!! Gregg was destroyed by the deaths in his youth...first his father, then his IDOL Duane! People need to think, Gregg was a human with feelings and pain that drove him and his music and we are the receivers of this wonderful music~listen to "I'll Be Holding On" that was Gregg!
