At 04:41 -- where Derek throws off his slide -- I could have run though a brick wall, my soul ascended to Nirvana, I forgot who I was. Tell me he's not top 10 greatest guitar players to ever live... I dare you. Good lordt. We all talk about wishing we could have seen Hendrix, SRV, Duane... but here is Derek. He's right here. Wow.
So lucky to have been a young teenager the first time i heard this song in the early 70's. Derek Trucks doesn't miss a lick. Throw in Warren Haynes snd especially Greg Allman it can't be better.

In my personal opinion, Haynes and Trucks was the best lineup since the original Dickey and Duane. Without those two at the forefront of this band, I don't believe they would have seen the continued success and popularity that they did in the modern era. Not trying to knock the other various lineups featuring Dickey and other guys, but I don't personally see them being as successful all the way into 2014 as they were with Haynes and the absolute mastery of Trucks. Just my two cents.

Some of the finest ensemble playing ever performed. This was always meant to be a live band - and no matter how good it sounds through speakers or headphones, there will never be any way to hear it the way it was played: when you look at the sheer volume of drums and rhythm section instruments arrayed across the back of that stage, it becomes inconceivable to imagine how they all sound when played by master players, live, unless you were there. In unison, these instruments became like a breathing, living, beating, organic being. No recording, no matter how well done, could possibly fit all of the endless dynamics of a band like this, on any medium - and this is only getting as far as the drums. A live gig by this band was the closest thing to musical perfection I have ever heard - and I am 70 years old. There will always be great bands - but this one was something very, very special. Many people think that Duane Allman was unknown prior to this band's rise: not so. Like many of our greatest players from that era, he was already very well known as a session musician, who had played for performers like Boz Scaggs, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, and others, a good while prior to the formation of The Allman Brothers Band. His style lives on, through players like you hear on this recording, but he died far, far too soon.

I've lost count but I am well into double figures now for the number of times I have watched this performance. It still gives me chills hearing Oteil laying down the bass line at the beginning before being joined by the rest of the band. Watching this fills me with joy and at the same time infinite sadness thinking these gentlemen will never all play together again.
I get the same feelings, I'm very fortunate to have seen ABB few dozen times all over country , I jam these videos like I'm there again.. This road goes on forever..
Wow , this performance is fantastic . A great American band , in all its forms . Every band member since 1969 is, or was, a virtuoso musician . Sadly we have lost many of them . Part of American history that will never be repeated .
Much compares but nothing is this good. Greg outlived his father and Duane by many years. Nothing crazy he just did. Now he is with them. Long Live the Allman Brothers...
The total musicianship of this band is nuts. What happened to real music? Thank God I grew up in the 60s and heard all this great music the first time around.
Ok boomer. Check out polyphia or archspire. They’re doing shit you wouldn’t believe was possible. And I like the Allman Brothers dammit. But I cannot stand boomers self-fellating.
@@GPaulTheThrashKing "Ok boomer"? How creative. Bet you've had that in the chamber for a while. Why are young folks so defensive about our appreciation for our music? BTW, I did check out your suggestions. Polphya: not bad, but the video was boring in and of itself. And the head-banging guy? 1980 called and they want him back. And Arschpire: gawd, what drivel that was. To each his own, but that was awful on many levels.
@@dalezjc >What happened to real music? >Thank God I grew up in the 60s and heard all this great music the first time around. The problem is not that we're defensive; It's that you're demeaning. Profoundly, ridiculously demeaning. Rock in particular has this problem, where old bands, instead of stepping out of the limelight, or maybe playing a few gigs here and there, clog up the festival main stages for DECADES after their prime. You old farts are killing the music you claim to love. Why should any young person get into rock music when it's "What happened to real music? When I was your age we had Foghat (or whoever)?" Why should any young person even bother to pick up a guitar when stupid old people will just keep bitching about how "You're not as good as the bands in the 70's." Even when bands are inspired by old bands, they're just revanchists, never as good as the original. The only reason the music of your youth exists is because the previous generation of old guys in suits went "I don't know what this is but the kids seem to dig it, " so why doesn't your generation do the same? Nah man. The Allman Brothers is great. ZZ Top is great. Zeppelin is great. But people like you who are stuck in the past and shit on the present suck.
@@GPaulTheThrashKing Thanks for your response. You're still being defensive, but that's okay. My father was an amateur jazz musician, and I grew up hearing tons of jazz. I hated it at the time, but little did I know that it was affecting me in a very positive way. But I never ragged on my Dad (or people his age) for loving music from their generation. I just didn't seek it out, so there was never any animosity against it. Why does it bother you so much that bands from the 60s/70s are still touring? To be frank, most of these bands have lost their mojo, and the majority of the lead singers can't sing any longer (compared to their earlier days). But boomers love them, so why not tour? Note that music subjective for sure. Whether I think I grew up in the greatest generation for music, is irrelevant for younger people. And I don't care. I heard Buddy Holly, Elvis, and The Beatles as a first-generation fan, and that music was brand new at the time. Nothing like it had ever been heard. Everything since then has been derivative of that music. And factor in blues greats like Albert King, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Freddie King, and BB King, and you have another genre that influenced tons of rock artists. That's important to the history of rock. You don't have to like it, but it is what it is. And doo-wop music is just as important. I don't care for most of it, but it's important. Sorry for rambling.
agree 1000% incredible, all locked in tight, talk about building a solo, warrens started with a whimper, they all rose to a fuckin freight train, drummers and bass answering warren, plus what a daunting organ the whole way, and the vocal, the best ever, bass, wow, drummers wow

Heard an Allman Bros tribute band the other night. Then you hear the real thing. HOLY CRAP!!!! Nobody and I mean NOBODY can touch the original. Especially back when Duanne/Dickey were there. These guys are GOOD though.
...worked their show in 1973, on stage crew as a young teen. Greg Allman's keyboard bench and mic boom stand were left behind for an unknown reason....they wound up in my basement to be used in my local group..... long gone now. I witnessed the greatness of Greg from only a few feet behind him, just out of the spotlight. " Brothers and Sisters" had just come out with " Jessica " being the big hit, along with Dickie singing " Ramblin Man ". What a memory and thrill ! Their stage manager was named " Twigs" and I kept forgetting it, accidentally calling him " Sticks" a couple of times until he threatened to " kick my Yankee ASS !! " That went over BIG with my co- workers !! Lucky me, I had seen them live in Boston Common while Duane and Berry Oakley were alive when I was 15. The Allman Bros. Band was great right out of the box : Elizabeth Reed, Midnight Rider, Whipping Post all GIANT songs with their unique sound......unforgettable !!
Derek Trucks is on fucking FIRE, and Warren Haynes of course provides those signature tasty licks. The entire concert is fantastic. It was awesome that Gregg was part of the festivities. A fitting way to be remembered by.
What makes the Allman Brothers Band so good? They have very gifted and humble musicians, who make very honest and heartfelt music. This is a magnificent performance.
Even for us Nawthenahs....We packed The Beacon Theater in New York City year after year after year night after night. And the Best live album of all time called At Filmore East was packed with us too in New York City. God Bless the Allman Brothers, Georgia and everyone who has ever played in their band...Thank you.
I've watched several bands in my life but none gives the live experience that the ABB did (oddly, the only other band I can relate it to is Tool. Completely on another level). Radio doesn't do them justice. Watching all that come together is complete magic. It's been 23 years since I seen them in that very place, The Fox, and it will never be forgotten.
Id go as far to say Truck's solo is the best I've ever heard. No one builds solos like he does. It's like boiling a kettle, that one was a double boil though. :D
Derek can get into the moment with every bit the skill of his uncle, Butch -- Gregg, Dickey and the original Allman, Duane. his solos are absolutely freakin' amazing. Makes me long for the 70's over and over -- but I'll take this band every time. RIP Gregg, now, as well. The world is a little less off without them.
The ABB have always been tight. You don't hear one soloist blowing away others, drummers pounding over guitars and vocals, everything was always in tune and in a state of homeostasis and symbiosis on stage, one feed off the other, tempos and timing impeccable.
Agree. this is not a easy bit of music. I've heard more than a few bands turn it into a train wreck, & others decline to try it. ABB members pass the test 100%
I remember Derek Trucks 1st performance with the Brothers at age 13 and man he’s just the best. Watching him cook up a solo is absolutely stunning. The Brothers are without a doubt the greatest band America has ever produced.😎
They use to give free concerts in Memphis at the Overton Park Shell. He was around Memphis alot. So lucky to see him and the guys so much. Going to FLA this was my Georgia music. Hitting GA Stateline till FLA, There and back.lol many trips.... Miss Greg.

For those of you who don’t think Derek Trucks is the best slide player around, please understand that most of us aren’t professional musicians. But what you should pay attention to is the very best musicians who are Derek’s peers and what they have to say about his works. You won’t find one that isn’t totally blown away with the amazing ability to craft solos and the touch he has on that SG. He doesn’t use anything but the knobs and his fingers and yet he gets all that sound. That’s real guitar playing.
John Lynch, it is very telling that Eric rarely touched the Derek and the Dominos repertoire but decided to play the whole shebang with Derek playing the Duane part. Duane and Eric dueling on the original album is considered one of the greatest reps of what tandem guitar playing is all about. ‘Nuff said

How much I loved them. I am proud to have known them
Blood sweat and tears the flood Yep Chicago I’m a man 25 minutes food ha ha ha haBlood sweat and tears the flood
Such a soulful voice. 'Just 'Ain't my cross to bear' did it for me 1st time I heard it!
If there is a God-they are probably keeping all Heaven smiling!!
You should be triple figures before commenting.....
Same here. This version is just filthy.
I get the same feelings, I'm very fortunate to have seen ABB few dozen times all over country , I jam these videos like I'm there again.. This road goes on forever..
Yes. You’re not the only one who knows his name. 😏
Wow , this performance is fantastic . A great American band , in all its forms .
Every band member since 1969 is, or was, a virtuoso musician . Sadly we have
lost many of them . Part of American history that will never be repeated .
PROUD TO BE FAMILY WITH THESE MEN💜🤴rental corvettes n kilos of troubles...Peace🔥
FUCK FAKE GOD
@@GPaulTheThrashKing "Ok boomer"? How creative. Bet you've had that in the chamber for a while. Why are young folks so defensive about our appreciation for our music? BTW, I did check out your suggestions. Polphya: not bad, but the video was boring in and of itself. And the head-banging guy? 1980 called and they want him back. And Arschpire: gawd, what drivel that was. To each his own, but that was awful on many levels.

>What happened to real music?
>Thank God I grew up in the 60s and heard all this great music the first time around.
That's got to be one of the finest live performances of any band anywhere.
And the audience was great too- (they adored them).
agree 1000% incredible, all locked in tight, talk about building a solo, warrens started with a whimper, they all rose to a fuckin freight train, drummers and bass answering warren, plus what a daunting organ the whole way, and the vocal, the best ever, bass, wow, drummers wow
Whipping Post @Fillmore East is the standard by which all others are judged, IMO. There is no better version. That night, they were ON FIRE!
Definitely so !!!!
I got a chance to see them at the legendary Red Rocks Ampitheater....epic show back in 78 -79
Easily one of the greatest songs in the history of music.
Absolutely agree 💯%
Master class in CRESCENDO!!!! decrescendo and start over…..!!!!!!!!!
Was at this concert....EPIC will NEVER forget what a jam session!
Hell of a bass player. He is seriously fantastic.
There was only one ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND glad to see they passed it down to there SONS !!!😂
this kid is nothing short of possibly being there baddest axe man alive today.... mind boggling watching him play without a pick which makes him so much more unique and special
Agreed
the way he builds up a solo is so incredible too
@@EC_IS_Here Give Warren his dues for the fabulous solo he did too.
@@janflewelling6277 Warren Haynes is one of my fav musicians and even more one of my fav Axe men, he always kils it of course!

oh man, i got goodbumps just copying and pasting bc listening was next.Cheers and blessings!!!!
All slide players play with their fingers. Derek is extremely good but in no way unique or special.
I swear, this is totally the best rendition of this classic I've heard, and I've listened to them all.
is it possible to pick just one?
Incredible at like 5 minutes when they just EXPLODE.
Holy cow! LL, I've got to agree. Been living with this LIVE since hearing it age 12 YO on the radio out of WWVA from Wheeling, WV back in the '70's.
I agree totally
Agree
The Allman Brothers are one of the greatest bands to have ever graced the face of the Earth!
I was a fan in the 60’s and the music has stood up for 50 years. I’m still a fan. 2019.
Me too, Robert. Five decades worth of "best damn band in the land."
First heard them in 69 when I came home from Vietnam been a fan ever since, still not anyone better
same here, just can't beat them
What they ^ said !
That's the true sign of bands that got it right from the start!
Gregg's voice always powerful, even in his later days. Best blues singer of my time. RIP.
Of ALL time❤
Is there Anyone Warren Haynes can't or hasn't played with. He is one of my Favorite ALL Time guitarist
at 81 being from Atlanta I remember listening to this in the late 60's early 70's. Those were the days of the best rock and roll and blues.
Pure joy watching these guys. PURE JOY!
'Sticks'..lol
What a masterpiece! I could listen to this all day long!
I have chills from watching this! These guys have my soul!
This gave me chills. What a band!
This was and is my generation. It doesn’t get better than this. WOW.
Gregg is at his absolute zenith here, both his vocals and that Hammond. Top of his game. Rock solid. Not to mention Derek and Warren.
And don't forget Butch! When he steps away to the tympani ...
Zenith
For my money the best blues song ever made! No one could perform it better than the Allman Brothers.
Derek Trucks is on fucking FIRE, and Warren Haynes of course provides those signature tasty licks. The entire concert is fantastic. It was awesome that Gregg was part of the festivities. A fitting way to be remembered by.
diese band ist die ur rock and roll band der geschichte.ich liebe die allman brothers band seit einem halben jahrhundert!!!!!!!
What makes the Allman Brothers Band so good? They have very gifted and humble musicians, who make very honest and heartfelt music. This is a magnificent performance.
For this Southern boy, there was never a better band. 'Nuff said.

NYC/LA,CAL But you don't love anymore than I have for all these years!
@@robjontay5052 Right on. It's coz we dig great music! No matter it's origin. And The Allman Bros, were a smokin band!
A band can't get much tighter than this.
An amazing performance! Thank you, absolutely fantastic.
keep coming back to this one - goose bumps every time!
Id go as far to say Truck's solo is the best I've ever heard. No one builds solos like he does. It's like boiling a kettle, that one was a double boil though. :D
Double cookin' drummers! Far out, 1of my most favorite songs of all time &always relevant. life.
Can't go on some good Down south southern Rock/Blues Awesome
Lindsey Buckingham as well.....There are some GREAT Guitarists in this world. We love them ALL. They bring us joy like nothing else can.....
He’s burning up that SG for sure!
Love Derek's little grin during Warren's solo, and Oteil just grooving to it as well. These guys are the epitome of support for each other.
That's respect and good friends.
that was awesome. you can can when a musician knows a good riff when he hears one

By far, through the ages, this is the EPITOME of rock n roll!!!!!
At 63 yo this brings back so
great many memories of better times when people and daily life was real.
Those times are gone. God help us all.
Amen to that I miss those days
63 too
1957 was a great year! Gregg is the reason I started playing the Hammond in73’! Still do. RIP brother Gregg...
Yes sir !!
The ABB have always been tight. You don't hear one soloist blowing away others, drummers pounding over guitars and vocals, everything was always in tune and in a state of homeostasis and symbiosis on stage, one feed off the other, tempos and timing impeccable.
That's an excellent observation.
Are you a musician? If you're not it's not too late to "learn a new trick!"
Agree. this is not a easy bit of music. I've heard more than a few bands turn it into a train wreck, & others decline to try it. ABB members pass the test 100%
Best RUclips comment. Right on, and something Derek Trucks as spoke about many times, saying that requires years of playing together
I remember Derek Trucks 1st performance with the Brothers at age 13 and man he’s just the best. Watching him cook up a solo is absolutely stunning. The Brothers are without a doubt the greatest band America has ever produced.😎
Jaimoe kills me, sittin there playing in slacks and a dress shirt with it completely unbuttoned 😆 get em, Jaimoe!
He is a humble badass.
Badass!
One of those rare, unique, and special bands that, despite changes in its lineup, sounds as powerful and joyful and masterful as the original!!!!
They use to give free concerts in Memphis at the Overton Park Shell.
He was around Memphis alot. So lucky to see him and the guys so much.
Going to FLA this was my Georgia music. Hitting GA Stateline till FLA,
There and back.lol many trips.... Miss Greg.
One of the tightest performances by any any band I’ve ever heard. Virtuoso playing all around. Never get tired of this video!

Sounds better than Live At The Fillmore version to me.
Yes. Most likely the guys are not blasted out of their minds so that helps. To me Whipping Post being played here sounds better than Whipping Post on Live At The Fillmore (ABB).
Oteill is magical on bass, such a groove master!
Amazing! Blown away! Goodbye Gregg - you're with us forever!
My face is smiling so much it happily hurts. Love Love Love Always 💓 AAB IS ALWAYS A FAMILY 💞
Rock on gentle souls. Gone way too soon but will never be forgotten.
This happens to be my favorite version, love these guys very uplifting to me
And me.
Same it's my favourite, though Duane is God, i like this version best.
You cant beat the Allman Bros band!!!And whipping Post is absolutely timeless!!!
Fuckin' A.... How can it get better than that? Trucks and Haynes are two Gods in my book! Can listen to this over and over, never gets old.
Such a massive song.
Derek is into his solo and Warren and Gregg smile at each other like all hell is about to let loose.
That was the best Whipping Post I ever heard, by any group including the Allman Bros. AWESOME!
This is an incredible version of Whipping Post.
I think Oteils grin at the end confirms they stuck the landing on this one !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Michael Andrews Do you know where and when this was? Because if anybody asks me... what's my favorite tune...I gotta be able to tell em the whole thing.....
@@ericunderwood1482 Good question. I wonder, is it really asking too much, to have the date of the show and the venue. All this technology and can't get basic info? Wtf. Still, it's a smokin' Whipping Post.
I've watched many versions of this classic.
This is one of the tightest and most inspired I've seen.
And I've watched them since 1972.
1969, 1970, and 1971 all highly recommended. :)
totally agree!
@@Qamera Yes, but the sound quality is shit.
lightcaesar where was this performance and when
I could not agree more.
ROCK has given many millions comfort, excitement, working on a good thing by working hard, then relaxing with my woman or because we are not programmed, we also get the blues and this is my testament, take me to the whipping post, hitting me hard and teaching me what, be true & let everything else fly away, a drink, a smoke, a woman & rock-n-roll what more do you need!!!!! many views are never the same, this the miracle of rock
ABB are like fine Wine .
Never gets old .
Greatest American Band .
‘Nuff said
Do yourself a favor and put your headphones on and crank it up....chills from head to toe
Been listening since I was 8 and I had to play this video over and over last night and today! Happy New Year!
Saw them at the Del Mar fair in 95, one of my all time favorite bands.
For an Allman Brothers fan ...that was like church ....r.i.p brothers
Derrick Trucks literally born to play that
This performance is so awesome I could listen to it over and over, and I often do.
