      My wife and daughter wish to obtain their driver’s licenses. I don’t worry for them because of their ability to drive, I worry because of people like her are on the roads. Driving under the influence is inexcusable. I have seen first hand what it does to a family. My father’s elder brother who never drank, was a good and decent man who was involved in many charities, was driving with his family to Melbourne Australia from Canberra in our nation’s capital. They were going on holiday and in the car was my uncle, his wife, and my two cousins aged 5 and 2. A drunk driver crossed over to the wrong side of the road and hit them head on. My uncle was killed instantly, my aunt was in a coma which lasted 3 months, and my 2 year old cousin was brain damaged and put on life support. My 5 year old cousin was unscathed, physically, but endured a lifetime of mental trauma all stemming from that accident. She’s been in and out of institutions for most of her adult life. My father had to make the agonising decision to turn off life support, an act which my Nana never forgave him for but which was the best decision given her prognosis. She was brain dead and machines were keeping her alive. My father struggled with alcoholism and my family bore the brunt of his inability to cope. All because some dickhead couldn’t be bothered to get a taxi home.
      I have no sympathy for those who drive under the influence.

Thankfully he never crashed or hurt someone, but the police found him pulled over a bunch of times sleeping it off I guess, with a high blood alcohol level. Since he went to prison he hasn't driven drunk as far as I know, but he's still an alcoholic.
      I don't know how my bf turned out so well honestly; he has never drunk any alcohol because he witnessed all the problems drinking caused his parents. Similarly, when I was a teenager I decided not to ever get drunk because there's alcoholism in my family too :/

    As a psychologist, I saw this video last week (prior to Charlie’s perspective). When I watched it in its entirety, I was horrified by how she initially tried to blame the victims and then claimed that she only hit one person (I believe these were pedestrians). The victims were struck so hard that some of their limbs were nearly completely disarticulated (i.e., torn off). She also thought she should get some type of credit for calling 911 herself. In the video, she displays narcissistic behavior to such an extreme that her behaviors are consistent with sociopathy. Being intoxicated generally enhances the mood state experienced while also being a CNS depressant. So, if someone gravely hurts another person while intoxicated, it should made a “normal” person with a conscience and empathy feel even more upset and inconsolable, particularly since she saw the bodies. Normal people would be so upset if they just killed two people; they would likely be throwing up and weeping uncontrollably. In the hospital, it was as if she pretends he didn’t just say she killed two people. She appeared mildly upset after the police officer stated his utter disgust in her behavior when she kept pressing him about her missing classes (btw the officer exhibited extraordinary restrain when he did speak, particularly after witnessing her singing, dancing, and laughing). Her upset was more incredulousness that the officer would say what he did. At that point, she asked if he was “allowed” to say what he did. She is lucky that was all that was said. I agree with Charlie; since she didn’t actually know the people she killed, she was unfazed. The video is a chilling example of sociopathy.

      Corporate interests should not weigh more than public interest. This being the case, we need to demand reform.
      We have become way too complacent with rampant corporatism usurping our entire society. This needs to stop.
      I remember when capitalism was a form of consumerism in which the rights of the consumer weighed more than the rights of the producer. Slowly over the past 10-20 years this has eroded because of a lack of consumer litigation. Most millenials hate the court system and have no idea how to file litigation.
      Boomers used to sue companies over everything. Remember when America would sue mcdonalds over some coffee that was too hot? Ironically enough, that's the sort of thing that kept our economy in check. Nowadays it's in shambles because we have no backbone.

    My best friend was a drunk driver. She ended up running headfirst into a semi on the way home from a bar, getting herself killed (and the “friend”that made her drive that night barely survived).
    The feelings are so complicated. It felt like someone ripped my heart out, but it’s sad to say that was the best case scenario. She’s lucky she’s the only one who died.
    I will miss her forever, but I am ALWAYS going to be unbelievably angry at her. It was so needlessly stupid and selfish.

    One of the most sickening parts of this story is when she was pulled over, one of the victim’s _DISMEMBERED LEGS_ was wedged in the car’s grill…and she had NO reaction to it. That’s one of the most gruesome things I’ve ever heard happen in a drunk-driving accident…
    *Edit: To the very few people commenting who’re defending her actions, stop…just fucking _STOP._ I cannot believe some of y’all are actually siding with this killer. I know it’s a sick way to get a shock factor from us, but it literally makes you just as vile and ice-cold as her. Though she was clearly under the influence of _something,_ it doesn’t excuse what she’s done in any single way. She killed 2 innocent people & showed absolutely _NO_ remorse for it. We can only hope she doesn’t do it again when she gets out. Also I found out about the severed leg from Fox News for those who were wondering. Please guys, I’m begging you, don’t drive if you’ve drank or taken any substances. That temporary euphoric high isn’t more important than taking someone else’s life. Get an Uber or taxi-it’s that simple.
    **2nd Edit: Melgoza was sentenced to a total of 14 years in prison, but under Illinois law, she’s only required to serve about 85% of that sentence; combined w/ credit for time served, she’ll probably get out within the next 11.5 years. I think that’s pretty despicable given that I still don’t believe she’s shown genuine remorse nor really accepted full responsibility for her actions that night. During her sentencing, she reportedly “expressed great remorse” for her actions, but I think she’s more upset at the idea of going to prison than for hitting those two people. I hope she doesn’t get out anytime soon…

      @@sagescorner256Im 25 and have been driving since I was 15 I'll give you some tips. Always go with the flow of traffic don't be that guy going 40 mph while everybody else on the road is driving 50 or 60 miles per hour. When getting on and merging onto the incoming Lane of the highway make sure you're already going highway speeds before you're even on. You want to be at least be going 50 or 55 on the on ramp. You should be at highway speeds once you get on, don't just look in your mirror. Also look behind you out the back window of the car to make sure there's no one there and then Merge. I see a lot of people hesitate when they get on the highway and it always is a pain in the ass for the person behind them, you want to be going as fast or faster when getting on that way you can blend into traffic. A lot of people will get on the highway slow which impedes the traffic behind them and makes it harder to merge because the traffic is going faster and you have to really rev the car up to catch up and it can become dangerous if your car can't get to speed quick enough.

    • @64chasem
      @64chasem Год назад +13

      @@sagescorner256When driving in residential areas always drive the posted speed limit. Don't ever speed through residential neighborhoods. Drive safely but aggressive and smart you want to drive like you're heading somewhere not like you're just dilly-dallying not paying attention in traffic. If a vehicle is trying to go faster than you and you think they're riding your ass let them pass you do not hit your brakes get over in the next Lane if you can and let the vehicle pass through.

    • @64chasem
      @64chasem Год назад +7

      @@sagescorner256always calculate and plan at least 500 feet ahead of time. If your going down the street headed somewhere and you know that you're going to have to use the right-hand Lane make sure that you're in that lane beforehand don't wait last minute and throw on your blinker and cut everyone off in traffic to get where you need to go. Make sure you're paying attention at all times and always look ahead of you not directly in front of you you should be focused on maintaining your lane and also your surroundings. On the highway the left lane is the fast lane stay out of that lane unless you're going to do 75 mph or faster. Use the middle lane if you're going to be traveling down the highway for a bit and use the right-hand Lane if it's just a short distance that way you don't miss your exit

      I had something similar when I got my VCA (basically a certificate that allows me to work in a hazardous enviroment like construction sites in the Netherlands), we had to watch workplace accident videos to really drive home the point of "this could be you". Like a guy walking infront of a forktruck and between a trailer, then getting hit by the forktruck and pulled into the trailer with the pallet and subsequently squashed by the pallet. Cause forktrucks have terrible forward vision when carrying a pallet, which is why they normally drive backwards except that final stretch into the trailer and thus why you never walk infront of a forktruck. Also a guy who was working on a electrical installation and put a tag on the breaker so while he's working he won't get electrocuted, only for some utter twat to walk in, ignore the tag and flip the breaker probably killing his coworker. Really still makes me think twice about my actions on the work floor to this day.

      @@maharajashiv3086 Dead serious. When it first happened, obviously the number one thing local media and my area’s Facebook groups honed in on was her unusual and quite frankly disgusting response to what had happened based on what was reported by the police. I remember how appalled i was and how outraged many of us were that she got to graduate. But after seeing the body cam footage straight up instead of what was just reported by the news, it really brought in a whole new perspective on her behavior and I’m surprised I haven’t see more local discourse now that the footage has been released. But I think we as a community have mostly moved on from the situation. Still pretty damn sad. It’s not often that these nationally covered type things occur in central Illinois. But this was one of them. And in her instance, it really did cause a widespread upset for all communities around Peoria. I don’t think I saw a single person coming to her to defense when the news broke.
