Since I am an almost 60 year continuous Cadilliac owner, I prefer the Brougham. However, I also a huge fan of Lincolns. The only thing I would have changed about the Lincoln is the taillights. On these types of large luxury cars I think the taillights look better if they extend beyond the trunk. The days of beautiful cars are long long gone!

On the town car, the stainless rocker trim was not an option, but was an indicator of trim levels. The signature and Cartier came with the lower stainless rocker trim while the base has only a simple chrome bottom rocker trim. So you know at the very least it is a signature or Cartier if the wide stainless rocker trim is present

I had friends who had 91 Cadillac Brougham’s, I loved those too, they felt bigger and the classic style was still amazing. Tough choice to make now, both amazing in their own rights.

Growing up in the 70s/80s in the Detroit suburbs, being the ‘company town’ it was for the Big 3- the streets were lousy with Cadillacs and Lincolns. Drive by the country clubs there and the valets would park the car brands together- looooong line of broughams loooong line of town cars- a few sevilles and Eldos, a couple of contintentals and tiny sections for jags and SL convertible Mercedes (rich wives under 60 drove those). The Lincoln would be my pick, based on my positive experience with Panther platform cars. But I can't deny that the Cadillac is gorgeous. Its interesting to note that both of these bodies were quite the senior citizens by the time their respective manufacturers built them. The Cadillac's basic body dates back to 1977 and the Lincoln's harkens back to 1980.

My grandparents drove Lincolns in the 70s, 80s and 90s. My parents, on the other hand, drove Cadillacs from the 80s, 90s and 00s.
I think I prefer the way the Lincolns of this era ran and sounded. Interestingly, my father, a transmission rebuilder and master mechanic always complained about not liking the way 'Ford brakes' felt. 😂 On a long haul highway drive, I think the Cadillac is nearly impossible to beat, from a comfort perspective. Also, I think the Lincoln is perhaps more technologically more advanced, but I remember the Cadillacs having automatic level ride. All-in-all, its a close one, but I think I have to roll with the Caddy. If we're talking early 60s cars, I would vote Lincoln all day.

The biggest difference between these two cars is that GM really wanted to kill the Brougham, but they were cheap to make and had huge margins so they rolled on with minor changes. Ford definitely invested more in the Town Car, they had more optional features, more choices in terms of trim and appearance, and even the engine management was more advanced.

I’m both a Caddy and Lincoln lover, so this one is very hard for me to choose. I will say that the Caddy Brougham ‘D Elegance package looks better than the Town Car, and has better quality interior materials over the TC. Especially the door panels, plastic trim, and how heavy more solid the doors close on those year Broughams is nice. While the TC doors feel too lightweight for me.
However, in terms of riding comfort, solidarity and build quality, Lincoln’s, ever since the 1970’s always had the smoothest, softest ride over any 70’s Cadillac I have ever owned. This includes the 80’s Town Cars.
Cadillacs look cool, but for whatever reasons, they all seemed to “rattle” and didn’t feel as bolted down like the Lincoln’s. My 89 Brougham squeaked and rattled like crazy, and that 307 motor was dangerously slow to drive, it was absolutely horrible!
But Cadillacs from 1950’s and 60’s was better than Lincoln IMO in terms of having superior styling and build quality up until 1965 or so. Caddy’s of this era were very soft riding, but somehow by the 1970’s, Fords and Lincoln’s rode so much nicer than GM vehicles at that time. Better fit n finish with Ford frames and bodies, being more rigid and solid over the rattle traps of some of the GM brands at the time.
I mean whenever have you heard of a Lincoln being “rattley”? I haven’t.
My only issue with Lincoln’s from 1980’s and 70’s is that there drivetrains were typical Ford engines and trans. Unlike Cadillac, up until 1980, they used Cadillac engines. So in some ways, the older Cadillacs were more special cars with their unique engines and transmissions.
The 1977-92 Fleetwood and Broughams are one of the most iconic body designs ever made, and the rear and styling of these cars are also very iconic.
I wish I could own both cars! But the Lincoln truly is the better riding, more comfortable land yacht.

The Lincoln i think is a much more elegant car . The caddy is nice but the interior reminds me of an Oldsmobile cutlass the Lincoln is sharp. As far as the engine power the Lincoln left the caddy in the dust. As you can tell Lincoln wins, and the price you get more for your money. You did a great job comparing them enjoyed it. This has nothing to do with tthis show but my favorite all time car is the 1967 Galaxy 500 fastback. Do a comparison of the 67 Galaxy and the Impala. Again great job.

Along with those old school bodies, is the Chrysler Fifth Ave. Does not have the options as these two but for that soft ride, carburated 318, it's a classic look. Midsize compared to the two it was an option for those who did not want a super large car but opulence.

    • @Dac54
      @Dac54 6 дней назад +1

One thing that the 1989 and late 1988 Chrysler Fifth Avenue had that was unavailable in both the Cadillac and the Lincoln was a driver's side airbag. I also preferred the analog gauge cluster of the Chrysler to the digital readout on the other vehicles. The Fifth Avenue was just as comfortable as the Cadillac and the Lincoln; it's too bad that Chrysler saw fit to end production of their rear drive models after the 1989 model year. The front drive New Yorkers and Imperials were nice-looking and well-appointed, but they really weren't comparable to the Cadillac Brougham or the Lincoln Town Car.

Being a GM guy until 1986, I never owned a Cadillac. But have owned a few Lincolns. Either one of these would look good in my garage.

One of the last few years that Cadillac made these out of Texas and Detroit. When they were updated, they transferred production from the Clark street plant in Detroit to Arlington Texas, where they build the Tahoes to this day. The Lincoln was assembled in Wixom Michigan until 2007...both were American made, for American customers with dying American styles.

Both beautiful cars, my first was a Cadillac and I’ve owned two and loved them both, however since then I’ve owned several Ford products including a town car that I own now and I have to say the Lincoln has always been an elegant looking car almost “dainty” to a point. The 1980-1989 was always my favorite styles but I love my 07 Signature Limited.

I was given an Impala 1965 in 1980 by my sister-in-law. I was so excited to own a car that it took about 6 months to figure the math is not working in my favour. I made $125/week working at Wendy's and spent $100/wk on gas and Co. My girlfriend then realized I had no financial nouse and left me. One mouth later I coming back from work at 2 am and the car broke down on the parkway. I sat in the car for about an hour, then took my school bag out of the back, left the car with keys at walked away. Another 2 months went by and I ran into the girl who walk out on me at a party. The first question she asked was about my 1965 Chevy Impala. When I told her I ditched it....(True story). she said, "There's a lot of things I love about you, even though you are a little slow, but I do believe we are met for each other".
I looked at her and told her I have missed her more than my Chevy Impala. She said, "Ok, my future genius, let us take the bus and go to your place"
That was 40years, we've been married for for 35yrs. We've never talked about my Chevy Impala to date.

They both looked good for being on ancient platforms at the time with the Caddy being a 1977 generation GM C/D body, and the Lincoln on a 1979 Ford Panther platform. For me though, the formal roofline, classy rear styling, sleek and bold front end/hood, and overall details both inside and out go to the Cadillac, but the Lincoln looks great too IMO.

I went with my grandpa in 65 to buy a Falcon, I fell in love with a Mercury Comet 4 door setting in the show room, my grandpa said we are poor working people and the Mercury was just to upity for our family so a Lincoln wouldn’t even been considered!

In my younger days, I began my career in the car business as a lot boy. From '84-'86 at a Buick store, then from '86-'88 at a Ford dealership. The Town Car was as reliable as a sundial. Both cars had every possible option for the time, rode like you were in a cloud on a marshmallow highway, but the Lincolns would just run forever, and I never recall them being plagued by electrical niggles.
The Town Car was a tarted up Crown Vic, and the Caddy was the same car as a Park Avenue under the skin. The GM cars weren't terrible, but I'd have gone with a Ford product all day long.

That’s fantastic! I have a ‘95 Caprice and ‘11 Crown Vic. Both police models. Hands down the Crown Vic is an absolute work horse but if I want to breeze down the road effortlessly at 100 mph all day, I’d have to take the Caprice!

100% agree that the deciding vote for or against either one of these was if you were a 'Ford man' or 'Cadillac man.' There was a Ford way of thinking, designing, and engineering, and a Cadillac way of doing the same. It was highly unlikely for anyone that could afford one to 'switch sides.' From my perspective as a GenXer that drooled over both these cars in my formative years, even though both vehicles were The Last Holdouts against downsized FWD luxury, here were my observations.
The Lincoln looked more conservative, lighter, and thinner; like the body panels were fabric stretched over a frame. It was big, but not flamboyant. Most drivers seemed to be women, which gave me the impression of 'old money.' The Panther platform was just so darn solid, it was the 'wise buy' for the long term owner-driver: again, sort of an old-money way of thinking. I saw lot more of the Town Cars in black livery shuttling people back and forth.
The Cadillac looked broader and more muscular, and dare I say it, 'manly.' The steel looked like it was pressing out as if there was substance beneath it. Although there were no shortage of women piloting them, more men seemed to be behind the wheel of a Brougham. Even though the Lincoln had the stainless flanks, the Cadillac was flashier overall. The stainless wrap-around hood spear and fins give the Brougham a sense of speed and sleekness that the Lincoln lacked. The Cadillac gave me the impression of 'new money,' of a self-made captain of industry buying what self-made captains buy: the biggest Cadillac on the showroom floor.
I have no doubt many Cadillac traditionalists 'crossed over' to Lincoln in the 1980s thanks to the HT4100. I love these last years of the Brougham with 'proper' GM V8s underhood.

If only the 305 was standard on there through the 1980’s with an optional 350, they could have saved their reputation.

The first car I remember was a Dodge Coronet but then we were GM with a 76 LeSABRE, 77 LeSABRE and 83 Oldsmobile Delta 88. Then in 1993, an 85 Lincoln Town Car came into our lives. 9 years later, a 95 Buick Roadmaster became the parents car while I had a couple of doublemint twin 90 Grand Marquis and LTD Crown Vic. The parents went with a Chrysler 300 in 2013 while I went with an 04 Town Car. Now we're all with Chrysler 300s. But I love both GM and Ford big cars...all I've ever driven til this 300.

The Lincoln Town Car was years ahead of the Cadillac, starting with the powerful 5.0 L fuel injected engine that was introduced in 1986. Lincoln was also well ahead of Cadillac with their electronic controls and computers inside and outside of the vehicle, many of which started in the early 80s and just kept improving each year. The numeric keypad entry on the door is one that continues to this day with Ford. Digital clocks, trip counters, fuel gauges and speedometer displays were already being seen in the Lincoln/Mercury lineup long before GM even had the options in their most expensive vehicles. The Cadillac had very primitive looking electronics, as evidenced by this video, with a very outdated dashboard just carried over from the mid 70s. Lincoln had changed out the look of their dashboard several times through the 80s, introducing brushed aluminum accents, modern style vents, modern looking knobs/controls, and a far superior radio that even had the option of a CD player mounted under the dash. By 1991 with the introduction of the new body style, Lincoln blew the dated Cadillacs out of the water. They may have had a slow start with the drastic change, but once customers realized the vast differences, there was just no comparison for quite a few years. Unfortunately, Lincoln's future has become grim as Ford has failed to back the division with competitive and desirable choices that are offered by its rival competitor.

Caddy for the win! In my old 85 Conti I loved the antenna switch, no antenna needed for CDs that were big in the later 80s.
