You're a big man for taking responsibility and not just blaming others, plus using it as a positive opportunity to improve your aircraft - refreshing to see!
Don't be apologetic about the videos while your plane is down. Most people that watch these videos want the aircraft owner's experience. Maintenance and repair is part of that, especially bush planes. Your videos add a level of realism when we see that it's not all edited fun stuff. Keep up the great work!

You really sound like a solid guy, not automatically assuming blame and at the same time not instantly blaming others. Cool, reasoned consideration. Rare quality indeed, bravo.
Dang, that sucks man... Good on ya for not blaming the construction company! TBH, I probably would have... I kinda agree with you it's at least 50/50 because yeah he should have been looking but pilots already have enough stuff to worry about and anyone leaving or forgetting anything on an active run way without notifying all the pilots is pretty reckless. Glad that nobody was hurt and Trent definitely took the high road on this one because I guarantee there are people that would probably sue over this. So good on him for not making anyone potentially lose their job over this because we all make dumb mistakes sometimes. I hope his sponsors helped him out. Plus I noticed in my personal experience that letting someone slide usually comes back in a good way by people randomly letting me catch a break when I needed it the most even though that part was unbeknownst to them.
Personal responsibility. So hard to find these days. Thanks for sharing and I hope the wait and downtime made it that much sweeter when it's back in the air.

Compound works great. My buddy here in Sac. Uses it, into his second coating now! Saves serious money. He is one of the OBP guys and runs an S7. Way to own your strike. Listen to Tim McGraws “Humble and Kind” this blog you did seems to epitomize that. Anyway, thanks for the update!
Genuinely one of my favourite videos you've made. It tells a great story but also shows some interesting flying. there's just something so funny to me that you can just land the plane 90° off the intended direction and roll off to th3 taxiway at slower speeds than some planes taxi normaly. Also very cool to see a Bonanza land off airport. Great work Trent.
Honestly I want to see more about what goes into owning and operating an "experimental" airplane like yours. particularly about how diy maintenance works and what they do to check you.
Thanks for keeping it real Trent! Stuff happens! Nice to see Matt on the west coast, your right he does a great job on the videos as well! Keep them coming you guys!
Greetings from rural NE Calif., here. I don't fly but several of us in my family really like aviation. I had a young cousin who was a private pilot, but it was a horse that killed her. Go figure. I "discovered" STOL aircraft on RUclips. So I have subscribed. I like vids with reports like this as well as actual flying. I like theory, clever ideas, and manning up, which you did. I appreciate explanations about Experimentals too. Oh, also, no bad language in the vid. Thanks. I look forward to more time with you and your plane. Hope your tires come in soon.
I like your innovative cam installation for seeing down in front of you. 41 years ago a bi-plane came down on top of our C172 at about 200' AGL, both planes attempting to land. Such an installation if available might aid in eliminating this type of collision in flight. Go for it and market the Palmer Cam.
Keep doing what your doing , sometimes we get to fly sometimes we need to talk about flying. I definitely respect your “own up man up “ attitude about the prop strike with the survey tripod.
That's very sad you had to run into that occasion but inspiring to see you accepting responsibility. But good to see your devotion to aviation. I thought my son what you said he loves your videos. Safe landings
What a bummer! Love your positive attitude, seeing beyond the negative & hands on approach. Not forgetting your sense of humour. It’s lovely you sharing your insight/experience & not only the cool side. Keep inspiring x ta
WoW! Those are really small tires compared to your monster Bush wheels, sorry for all your troubles hope ya get it all back to normal and back on the Mountains.

I just recently got my tailwheel endorsement. Finished in a super decathlon. I have flown a super cub and a dehaviland chipmunk. The forward visibility on the decathlon is amazing. No zig zag required. I'll be purchasing a share of an aeronca champ soon. Hoping it has similar forward vis as the decathlon. If not I'll learn a lesson from this video. Read these notams carefully. Lol
Good to see you are flying again, you got us worried! Very cute tires... In a time where everything that goes wrong alway is someone else's fault, I like you attitude owning it. Looking forward to the next one!
Every setback is a opportunity for a greater comeback, I like the videos Trent, sometimes it’s tough funding the dream, but it’s worth every penny with the smiles it brings to our faces.
Hey, don't worry about the many videos with mostly you talking! You're great in front of the camera, an engaging storyteller also with words and voice, not just with the adventure shoots. I enjoy both types of videos, keep'em coming :)
Man, maintenance is really the huge downside of aircraft ownership (good thing the upside is soo cool). I love that after you crashed you didn't just get everything fixed again but also went pro-active and installed those windows, and the backup cam : so cool! Love your videos!
The new windows are pretty sweet. Nice job with the backup cam too. Personally, I like talking about airplanes and working on airplanes at least as much as flying them, maybe even more, so this was another great video. And the Kitfox doesn’t look all that different with the 800s. It’s still pretty cool. Thank you, and take care.
Trent Palmer I fly a Series 5 with 8.00 tires. It's funny what you said about the small tires. I think my Fox looks great with them, but I agree yours doesn't look right at all without the big ones. Thanks for all the videos. You fly like how I did 10 years ago.
Currently in school for my AP cert. and also doing propellers in class this week so this is cool, you covered a lot of the actually "How it happens" and what not, very awesome video!
Good call on the front view camera. Have you ever thought about putting one on the roof of the plane for better visibility in flight? I saw a midair collision video recently involving a high wing and low wing airplane on short final. Neither of them saw each other before they collided.
Here's a tip for cutting lexan from a sign guy: get a piece of foam about 4" to 6" thick, put your piece on there and do your cutting. Much easier than spinning it and constantly repositioning it on the edge of a workbench.
I bought my 1978 T tail Lance and flew for 19 years. Only had one problem with a connector for the auto pilot that had to be replaced. No other problems, Great Plane. It was rated for 7 as it had a kiddie seat that I could put in the isle in the middle seat area for another passenger. The most I flew with was 6 passengers to New York, Kennedy Airport. I was at hold at the runway facing a Hugh Jumbo jet about 39 stories above me waiting for my turn to take off. I was flying instrument out to Stewart FBO a joint military airport with tail hook cables across the runway for Navy pilots to practice. I had to land long to miss the cables as it would have wrecked my landing gear. No problem, we had lunch at the airport cafeteria and flew back to Richmond, VA. I only flew a few uncrotled FBOs, mostly flew to class A and B airports. In the mountains of Colorado I rented a plane and my wife and I flew off a one way runway. Cliff at one end and mountains on the other, uphill to the mountains. I met a bush pilot that used his driveway as his private runway. Nice guy. I had a lot of fun. There was too much to remember when getting my Private license so I prayed to God to help me and I could remember everything and got my pilots license in 6 weeks (only 3 weeks of study). Later I had the same trouble with the Instrument rating. I prayed for help and God helped me remember everything and gave me good orientation in the clouds. I am a Christian and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints which is the Restored Church of Jesus Christ, previously a Baptist minister. Great video. I am glad the runout was good. That would not have been cheap or fun to have it torn down again. The little tires do look funny on it after being used to the big ones. I am interested to see how the coating works on the bush wheel tires.
Love the modifications you made after the incident. I crashed an RC plane today and it sucked - seeing this makes me feel less bad about it! Thanks for sharing your experience Trent :) - James.
tried it a couple times too.. what amazes me is that when you crash a mile away you can hear the impact and how it rew up from all the fuel getting forced tru in a sec when the fueltank is geting flattened.. only thing surviving this crash was the elevators and 2 of the wheels.. rest was totally destroyed..not even a single part of the engine survived.. well maybe the glowplug worked but it got trashed with the rest. it decided to "land" in a pile of rocks a farmer had removed from his fields.
Dude your positive attitude discussing all of the troubles is inspiring! Sucks it happened, but Glade your in the air again! P.s the fox looks just fine with the small tire.... Having said that, definitely prefer the big tires!
When was watching the Oshkosh Flying Cowboys' STOL demonstration, I was actually thinking it would be nice to have a camera underneath the plane for visibility. Looks like it is already out there. Cool. Safety first!
Tough time! Glad nothing more serious! You'll be back. Biggest tires I could get on my 182 would be 8.5's with an Airglas STC so... I kinda chuckled when you commented about the 8's lol.
Too many people in this world refuse to take responsibility for their own actions and are always looking to place the blame for what they have done on someone else. So I think that your "Manning Up" and taking responsibility for the tripod says more for your character than anything else could. I think you are correct in saying that the tripod should have been better marked, or, from my point of view, perhaps even should not have been where it was at all. But I've got to tell you that I truthfully truly admire the position that you have taken, in taking responsibility for the tripod and not harassing the company that owns it. I think you have a right to be proud of yourself, and I think you deserve to hear that from other people.
Great to see forward cameras on your tail dragger! also great position for the new windows, wing camera gives a great view of "feet alive" for us wannabe tail wheel pilots. Thanks Trent
The things that wouldn’t happen in the bush, will happen in a familiar setting. Looks like you made the best of it. Glad I found your channel. Take care.
Hay Trent I've just started watching your videos and I have already learned alot of stuff and got answers to things I've wanted to know so a great big thank you from Terry in the UK.
Man, I hope the luck gets better! I think the thing I loved most about not owning the shop was that I wasn't the person who had to tell the aircraft owner how much it would cost to fix everything. I did eat the cost of parts on one repair, but it was fun to keep the receipt so I could prove that there was a part with all paperwork, that you could buy for less than $1. If it makes you feel any better, the corporate flight dept I worked for had to spend $95/nut for an overhaul on one of our Hawkers.
Love the new windows!!! and the camera!! Retreading on the bush tires is a great idea! ‘Tread’ materials for that industry can be very tough. Good luck on that.
Don't understand the prop strike. I soloed in a Cub at age 16* and we were taught to weave back and forth while taxing because we couldn't see over the gas tank, especially from the back seat, the solo position. *Well, that was 70 years ago so maybe things have changed since then. Just to expand that a bit, I took lessons from Burrell Tibbs and Cal Appleby. Look up Tibbs and you will see some comments posted by me. Tibbs hired Wiley Post and taught him to fly in the long-ago. www.earlyaviators.com/etibbs.htm
I am glad I did my training at a class D airport. Many pilots I know are so afraid of ATC, but to me it was always something I had to do. Nice mods on the plane. That car camera is a great idea. If I ever buy a tail wheel airplane, that is an idea I am going to steal.
That auto backup camera on the front of your kitfox is a GREAT idea! I'll have to put that on my Pietenpol (when I build it). And the small tires are fine! It doesn't look stupid, you're putting to much emphasis on size! (thatswhatshesaid)
Sorry to hear about all the crap that hit you Trent but loved the video and thanks for keeping us up to date. To be honest, if it were me I'd edit out the "my fault" part and ding them for the prop. They should have their equipment better marked, I'm sure you're not the only tail dragger around and if you hadn't have hit it some else would have. I'm not a pilot but have worked construction jobs at small airports and know how equipment and work areas have to be marked. If that were my work here I would have been fined and would have to pay for repairs. Thank God you didn't fling something into another plane or worse...... person. Keep the videos coming and as always...... *Dance the Skies*
It's rather common knowledge with a tail dragger that visibility over the cowl is non existent. SOP is to zig zag left and right while taxiing down the runway, for visibility purposes. See how a P-51 taxis down a runway, sometime. That's how we did it during WWII
So how have the recapped tires work out? Worthwhile? Economic? Good performance? You could probably do a whole video on it (fly up and show the process at the vendor)...
Oh no!! I had a transponder break on me a few weeks ago and I thought that was bad! But hope you can bounce back and get in the air to make more of your awesome videos!!
Trent: I came across this video by chance, thought the video looked interesting, so I watched it and then, impressed by your attitude, commented on it below. Live your life the way I speak of below, and you'll wind up at the end of your life with nothing but a tremendous pile of regrets. But you have obviously chosen to make the moral choice and live your life the way you should, by doing the RIGHT thing in ALL circumstances ... so I believe you'll avoid that. Congratulations on being one of those that are part of the solution and not part of the problem... One of those that makes a contribution to society and not one of those that preys on it. tried it a couple times too.. what amazes me is that when you crash a mile away you can hear the impact and how it rew up from all the fuel getting forced tru in a sec when the fueltank is geting flattened..
only thing surviving this crash was the elevators and 2 of the wheels.. rest was totally destroyed..not even a single part of the engine survived.. well maybe the glowplug worked but it got trashed with the rest.
it decided to "land" in a pile of rocks a farmer had removed from his fields.
Same here. I just trashed my FT Versa.
Dude your positive attitude discussing all of the troubles is inspiring! Sucks it happened, but Glade your in the air again! P.s the fox looks just fine with the small tire.... Having said that, definitely prefer the big tires!
Keep’em coming! Interesting that you meet up with two of the other Pilots that I watch.
I love the new windows! I wish you better luck for the next few months haha
I think you have a right to be proud of yourself, and I think you deserve to hear that from other people.
the squeak squeak made me laugh _needed that- glad the engine didn't get hurt
BTW, not only are your videos great, but I love your paint job!
Sorry about what happened. Could've been worse. Hope you're flying big tires again soon. Cool looking job on the cowls.

I am glad I did my training at a class D airport. Many pilots I know are so afraid of ATC, but to me it was always something I had to do.
Nice mods on the plane. That car camera is a great idea. If I ever buy a tail wheel airplane, that is an idea I am going to steal.
Great job on getting her flying again! Maybe you could put an ND filter over the front facing camera to get rid of the rolling shutter effect.
I wish I could own and fly a plane ,it looks SO FUN ....GREAT VIDEOS
That's how we did it during WWII
it looks fine on the smaller tires :). That was a surprise to see Matt in the vid...super.
Love your videos! Thanks for all the flying inspiration! I’m currently getting my private license at Embry Riddle
I think the videos where you're doing maintenance/repairs etc are very good as well. It's interesting to see what can happen and what's involved.
Yeah.. I'd've cursed a blue streak. Good work on all of that and the improvements. Super wise... Best of (future) luck Trent!
So how have the recapped tires work out? Worthwhile? Economic? Good performance? You could probably do a whole video on it (fly up and show the process at the vendor)...
Trent, the plane looks great even with the 8.00s don't worry!
Bonanza coming in, me: "wait"
Seeing registration, me: "cool"
seeing JP in the right seat: "awesome"
Yeah, both cool dudes, Matt and JP
Yeah, it was awesome linking up with those 2!
Was it planned at all or kismet?
As soon as he said Bonanza coming in, I thought it had to be them and it was!
Simske that’s pretty much exactly what I thought when I seen the Bonanza.
Recognized Matt right away! Small community!
Wow, that sucks.... But glad to hear things are getting back to normal!
You're a rare type.
Please take us through the test flying! Think that'll be an awesome learning experience
