I absolutely love your vibe. You are the David Attenborough of painting, watching and listening to you is so relaxing and peaceful that encourages me to paint more. Great work, great videos.
There was an article recently where the designers said less fur was a conscious decision, as actual sickly rats apparently have much more skin on show and small scraggly bits of fury
I feel the same way about these skaven. Want to play with them, but also want to take my time and make them look something special. I'd love an episode on how to take a fairly slow scheme and make it less tedious over 40 models.
Hell yes bro!! Currently working on my skaven army for TOW, they're definitely in them. Every tournamnet I've ever played in allows all the legacy faction. Also I love that you loved the new skaven models so much you wanted to take more care with them! made my day as I watch this and edge highlight with the utmost patience and love every one of my 13 warplock jezzails
@ Yes dude, 13. The sacred number and also they're a really underrated but powerful unit in the old world! Espesh combined with curse of arrow attraction
I really enjoy watching you paint. You inspired me to experiment with airbrushing which I am just taking my first few tentative steps with. I like seeing that you are using it on more selective areas.
Awesome to see a Skaven video. I would absolutely love to see you do a video on higher level painting for the more important and awesome models like the new mounted lord and the Rat Ogres (or Storm fiends or the Verminlord for example)
I had the exact same experience waiting for the old world to restart my skaven army, was really disappointed with old world but I've pre ordered the new box and can't wait to get back into aos
Skaven are a dope army! Cool lore, new minis seem amazing. I wish they'd show more of them soon! I'm holding off on Skaventide box, mostly due to being swamped with other projects, but as soon as my painting table is clear I'll jump into the rat army!
I applaud your sense of self-awareness here. Mordheim warbands are the perfect size force to indulge in thepainting, collecting and gaming hobby-triad. I look forwards to seeing your rats take shape.
I remember that skaven and high elf box set fondly, me and a friend spent an evening building them together, something about those old boxes just hits the nostalgia buttons at least for me, such as Assault on Black Reach
I love that you are coming out with some AoS stuff now that 4th is coming. And I agree you should slow paint them, also for content. I really enjoy the long videos.
Really enjoyed this Henry, and your ‘half arsed’ paint jobs are obviously also fantastic. I do understand the conflict with standard, when to stop and how a stylised approach is a more comfortable way of solving the problem. I’m about to start my own summer project of Skaven, and I’ll definitely be cutting a few corners, but will also find myself doing way more that perhaps I should for that many rank and file models. Though I’m also sure my ‘nice army standard’ is likely no better than your ‘half arsed’ version. I’ve got quite a lot of the Island of Blood era, but I’ll be mixing in the new bits as well (when my Skaven half of Skaventide arrives). Finally, I really enjoyed the personal history introduction, and you should definitely not apologise for it. Now that may be because I have the tendency to do similar things are the start of my videos 😂, but seeing you do it here makes me feel a whole lot better about doing so in my little videos.
So when I was first taught about zenithal primes what I was shown was prime black and then do a 45 degree coat of a mid tone grey from above, followed by a quick dusting of white from directly above. I'm curious if you ever do that or if you only ever do a two tone zenithal? I also really like how those thinned down dry brush metallic came out, they still have that metal look of TMM paints without being so shinny that you couldn't put an actual highlight on them, I'm not sure how much of that was the thinning of those paints and how much was the dulling down of the dry oils but I really wonder how a NNM TMM hybrid would look with those as the base and then maybe some shinier TMM paints as the highlights(maybe not even brighter colors just shinier finesses all in one color)
great new models and sinple easy repeatable scheme. I would love to see an albino skaven with a kind of violet scheme. I hope you paint some more rats in the next weeks ♥
It would be amazing if, in the next weeks, you upload something abt mordheim, for example you could make a video abt what minis on the gw site could u pick for each warband of something like that
I've started my skaven army a years ago and still haven't painted a thousands points 🤣 I love painting them so much that i spend 10hours per clanrats. I definitely feel you there (and I've enjoyed warcry and underworld as a mean to play them)
Awsome video! Its the best one for the Skaven I actually saw.-Thank you so much. You used an airbrush, you used oilwashes, all for beeing fast and effektive having the best possible results, I miss that on all the other videos. And you used not only GW products. Please could you make an indeepth video how you did the sand on the base and pose the miniature on this. Now knowing that it is better to paint the miniature without the base is so important for me. I would very happy look more videos about Skaven painting by you, because you work slow, clean and will have a very nice army at the end.
'Caucasian Rats' was an early workshopped name for the Skaven, I think? I overheard Jes Goodwin saying it in Ye Olde Trip over a pint of Doom Bar last Sunday.
Skaven were the first army that I picked up when I started getting back into the hobby as a young adult. Grabbed the Isle of Blood set when it first launched thinking that I'd be into the Elves, turned out it was all Skaven from there.
Struggling with this with my space wolves in 40k, im 3 minis from 100pts, but 2k is another milestone...to get there i decided to consciously do in stages, sso my first stage is just built and basecoated. no plastic showing, just the right colors on all the pieces. so it doesnt feel like ive half-assed it as its clear theres a certain stage. once i get a force fully basecoated, im going to allow myself to go back and do individual minis to completion it means yea, there will be a difference in visual fidelity across the army for a long time, but it also will be clear that its "in progress" and personally thats enough to keep me happy and willing to put them on the table. painting is my passion when it comes to the minis but i enjoy playing, so im meeting myself halfway
I can relate to the feeling of "half assing it" if I don't really buckle down on a miniature and give it all the time in the world. But your rats look great regardless!
Shame you didn’t get the army joy you were hoping for. The models look amazing so I’m sure you’ll have a blast with them, even if it doesn’t involve 40+ clan rats! Would like to see some content of you just getting stuck in and enjoying things like the ogres though, doesn’t have to be for army painting to be great content, you guys are awesome regardless of the style!
I can't wait to get my hands on them, but same as you I don't think I can army paint them, I'm planning on going slow and steady with small groups of them and quite a bit of variation between them, which I think will keep them interesting and fits in with the rag tag nature of skaven
Nice. As a Skaven player, I tend to prefer more furry models. However, I like a lot of the new models too. It's diverse. I like the AoS Plague monks better than the older ones, on the other hand, the Stormvermins are definitely the prettiest of the 6th edition (fantasy battle).
I love how your Skaven turned out. Disappointed you won’t be doing the new Skaventide box - maybe you’ll change your mind 😃. When you put Contrast after the oil wash, did you need to apply a varnish in between?
I ran into this exact problem when I bought Echoes of Doom and finally got my own little skaven army. My partner pokes fun at me all the time that each rat has to be its' very own project.
I feel you. I‘ve tried doing the Contrast+ method a couple of times and it comes out okay, but I just don‘t enjoy it. If I want an army, if I like the models and buy them, I want to do them justice, if that makes sense. (And yes, go hunt for some Wyrdstone!)
Great video. I've been excited to see your take on these skaven models since they were first announced, and you doing a slower paintjob for mordheim suits me even better. I'm glad you mentioned burrows and badgers because that was my first thought when seeing that old skaven model. That era is before my time but anything Jes Goodwin has had his hands in is always incredible. Man, I haven't been this excited for a model release in years.
I really empathize with your final point about why you weren’t enjoying yourself. I don’t like doing less than I like on army painting just to get things done.
I'm the same mate, I want to paint faster but painting armies faster generally means painting to a lower standard and I generally don't like to do that. So I just persevere and be happy to only paint as much as I do. But the LI stuff did help with that as I was certainly happy just to pump stuff out for that without doing heaps of detail.
I'm in my 50's and only found out about warhammer by accident 5 years ago as a way to help me deal with depression and painting airfix kits , I ordered a stormcast figure by chaance6and was hooked. This week I bought the skaventide box for the stormcasts I'll ever want to paint 😅
I’d love to see more skaven if you do a smaller force. The new sculpts are great, I’d definitely enjoy seeing a high level army painting vid for them if you’re keen to do more. A rat ogre could be very cool 🐀
I won't be able to buy a Skaventide box until after Thanksgiving and grad school tuition :( If they're still available, I plan to 3D print some sampan hats at work to finally make an Eshin army I've wanted since 7th edition WHFB.
I felt the same way with my current 40k CSM army. I love them so much, but there's really not much to do when I'm painting black legion. Oddly if I paint with a gold basecoat insteda of black I have a lot more fun, but I dislike using the (admittedly amazing) black legion contrasts paint. I think the idea I would have is goign for more monster focused armies, as that way I won't have to batch paint 50 odd infantry and can really dig into the details on the big boys.
I think possibly for army painting these are a bit low contrast. The new models are awesome but I’m the same. I was thinking of getting the box and doing a skaven army but now I reckon I’ll just pick up a few. Gonna get the 30k mechanicum box instead
Absolutely slow paint them! Better to enjoy the process of making a video and painting your models than trying to appease the algorithm by doing a speedpaint-an-army-in-a-week video. 👍
I bought the box because I love stormcast and to sell the rats, now I still love the stormcast but may keep the rats, I know a mate will be upset if I do 😅
And here we see the two extremes, Henry is sensible and goes "nah fam i dont have it in me" when on the other side we see Mr V. Venturella doing 6-8 hours per clan rat over 11+k points (which is also sensible since his army will be fucking DOPE when its done)
Thanks for the inspiration. Needed a video like this. Trying to paint my 20 clan rats. Starting to get tedious and they look like shit so il use this vid
How about paintning a unit giving it the time you think it deserves? Maybe one or two test schemes videos? it is clear that your audience likes listening to your reasoning and watching you develop a paint scheme that you are happy with, both in terms of the painting process and the end result. On a related topic I really think that this feeling of not being able to do an army justice can cause a severe painting block which often ends in a project getting scrapped.
I've loved Skaven for decades, but can't quite get past the stylistic inconsistency. The Island of Blood era was the peak for me, largely because of the stylized faces, but so many key models still had that old, fur-heavy style. Skaventide looks to split the difference, and I'm not sure the added detail would be fun to paint. But they might look better from three feet off than up close.

Bit unfortunate decision. Kind of like treating all the skaven as clan pestilens.

This is why the war bands from underworlds are the best. Great sculpts and you can take your time and make them nice. Maybe do one for the content?
Looks amazing! I'd love to see you paint them slowly and listen to your super calm narration while you dive deep into the details one by one
It’s fantastic to see the evolution of the range over time.
Yes-yes! A Mordheim warband!
great video. I love how honest you are about your process.
I really enjoy watching you paint.

Wow. Well done. They look amazing!
The "smaller" idea is brilliant. Honestly, big part of the reason I will get the Skaventide box was to use it as part of a Skaven Mordheim warband 😅
I reckon there will be a lot of us with that plan!
@@cultofpaint true 🥳

Use a electric tothbrush with an old brush when removing paint. It's far superior for removing stuff not only stuff from your teeth, but also paint from miniatures.
Mine was all gunked up!
My favourite method is meths and an electric toothbrush. But it's messy
Yes it is. I use a bowl or something similar to keep it to a minimum
Just do the spearhead in the skaventide box to the level you want.
I want stormvermin! Give me stormvermin!
