I really love watching your different techniques. When I read the title before the video went live, I thought “oh he’s gonna show bone. Maybe I’ll get a better idea of how he did the Ivory’ish armor on the sisters combat patrol.” Loved that ivory so much, I asked Ben to replicate it on our project. Then I watch this and I see…oh it’s not the same. Now I can definitely tell the difference between Bone and Ivory.
I’m a total noob to painting but have stumbled onto my favourite for a skull with horns. Prime Black - airbrush Pre-shading (Grey to White) - airbrush Horns = 2 drops pallid bone to one gravelord grey (both speed paints / two light coats) Skull = just Pallid Bone - two light coats.. but second coat, flooding dark areas .. Then two sessions on dry brushing.. white base paint and pallid bone for the first pass.. in both horn and bone.. then just white on the second pass but much lighter. worked amazingly on a death knight shoulder pads that had skulls on them..
Ah Charadon Granite, you were one of a kind, weren't you (and Mechrite Red too, we shall not forget)! While we can't get you any longer, there is an almost exact match for it though: Matt Cexwish Brown Grey (Pro Acryl).
Cool video and amazing results, those horns look really good! Also, for anyone who may not have an olive drab paint, just mix yellow with black, that'll do the job!
I love this style of toolbox video! Learning techniques for realistically representing the sort of different materials you see on minis like bone, skin or leather is super helpful and helps teach observational skills - how to go from reference material to miniature. Also it reminds me of youtube master Vincey V! This was a really good tutorial, thanks.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for showing and explaining how you had loaded your brush. That's so handy and it's missed in so many other painting tutorials.
I always paint my bones fairly cleanly, either a bleached or yellowed bone colour. This is a very cool appearance and I'll have to give this a go at some point
love this format, and also I love to hear how you do it. I have a model that I shelved because I did not know where to begin on the massive amount of bones. This gave me some ideas to work with. Might finally break him out again.
Just a little info that might give you some ideas - horns aren't bone, but a layer of keratin over a live bone growth. Its the same stuff that makes up hair and nails, or hooves. Theoretically any color that hair present in an animal species may be present in the keratin, but its translucent and so the solid bone and blood underneath it influences that color. The tips are almost always darker than the body of the horn because the keratin has different properties when the animal is young and horns grow from the base. They often grow paler with age. Hope that helps spark some ideas.
My bone recipe is super simple! From a white scar undercoat, use Skeleton horde and you’re done! Lahmian medium wash over the top incase the contrast paint dries glossy!
I have only been involved in the hobby for about a year and I wish I had discovered this channel earlier, this is one of my favourites so far as I plough through them, having them on in the background is counter productive as I cannot just listen, I have to watch too! Keep up the awesome work. Can I ask what brush you use on these fine details?
The painting content is really nice, and I also really enjoy your talkshow content. Small point of note: the reference picture of the T-Rex is actually a fossil and so may not represent a realistic bone colour.
@cultofpaint I did enjoy the video very much regardless, thank you! I'm curious when you are going to continue the black templars army, I finished painting mine only yesterday!
Really enjoyed this. Whenever I paint with a lighter "bone" coloured paint I find it gets really chalky when I water it down - is that a medium related issue? I've tried adding a little bit of matt varnish but it makes it less translucent
generally the lighter the colour the chalkier it can get. You could try an acrylic medium instead of water. Or just pick up a couple different brands and see which you prefer.
I've spent months wondering why my US Olive Drab looks much greener than yours. Turns out Vallejo renamed US Olive Drab to to Olive Brown and named a different paint US Olive Drab. I only realised because the numbers on the bottles are different
I've watched this four times and still can't follow what you're doing. My efforts. even trying to use the same tones and values, are not working. It's like if you don't use the same paint, the layering on the bone without a wash or glaze will not work. Then there is the choice on the horns at the end, it sounds all mixed up.

Those horns look amazing!
The Skaven horns look fantastic. These technical videos are great.
I absolutely needed this. I'm going to paint Vizzik soon and I wanted to do really well with the horns especially.
really like these sorts of videos because they're not model dependant and you can use them for anything

Absolutely beautiful work, definitely the tutorial I will be coming back to for Abraxia when I get around to painting her!
Considering I have this exact mini (warcrow orc not skaven, no no) waiting on my desk, this is perfect timing ! Love it
Love the deep dive style vid, amazing results and does seem very fun technique to lose yourself in.
Absolutely brilliant video, really like the effect you created on the bones there.
Nice work Henry - MAN that Skaven model is OUTRAGOUSLY good
so good.
Super useful content. Thanks! this makes mw want to go out and paint Osiarchs!
You should make stickers of the cult of paint logo that comes up when you say “let’s paint”, I’d buy that!
The palette and brush unloading explanation is great. Never see that demonstrated

Thanks for the tutorial. I’m just learning to paint miniature. I started late in my life. But I hope to get better.
welcome to the hobby!
That's fantastic, hope you have much joy with this wonderful creative hobby 😁
Good stuff! 👍 I've been looking for a video over more greenish-brown bones for a skeleton giant.
Thank you for the video!

Awesome
Have you considered painting any of the Ogor Mawtribes miniatures and making video of it? There' s plenty of tusks in this army😃
@@ukaszskorwider9197 great army. I'm looking forward to whatever they get in their next book.
Yay my favourite sleep aid uploaded
Have you guys done a beastman video in your catalogue?
Not yet. I think i'll do some when they get their journal.
Epic
The Space Wolf in me is ready to enjoy this video
I can't see real good. Is that Richard Gray over there?
Very nice, going to try this on the next model with bone and horns. Any chance you'll tackle fur in this type of way in the future?
