- Today I'm showing my wife Superman Returns for the first time!
While Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) plots to destroy him once and for all, the Man of Steel (Brandon Routh) returns after a long absence to a much-changed world. Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) has moved on with her life, and society has learned to survive without him. Superman must find a way to reconnect with her and find his place in a world that may no longer need him.

I wonder if you have seen the show Superman and Lois and if you have, what do you think of it? Season 3 so far has been perfect in my opinion.
There is a scene where Brandon Routh's Superman is looking around the ruins of Krypton that was cut from the start of the movie. They should have left that scene in. It would have been a great start to the movie.
Holden, it’s been established in comics that Superman possess a kind of bio-field that he can extend around people and objects this is why he a regular human can fly w/ him and breathe, not freeze and why massive objects like ships and submarines don’t tear apart when he’s lifting them. I don’t know if this has been retconned away but I always thought it was a great comic book reason that supported the science/biology of Superman.
That was Frank Langella as the Editor. He played Dracula a loooong time ago.
Superman totally made a Kryptonite condom......
That plane-saving scene is still one of my favorite in any superhero movie and the fact they brought Brandon Routh's Superman back in the Arrowverse Crisis event was amazing.
Yeah, if there was one scene that perfectly succeeded in continuing the legacy of Reeves’ Superman, it’s that scene.
It was still funky that he was already playing The Atom though.
@@bad-people6510 I like that little moment Kara had where she *thought* she was complimenting Ray on how buff he was, and then it turned out to be an alternate version of her cousin! Yeah, Kara; that happened just now.
The look on her face...
I think it was a mistake not to use him further. I know Lex was integral to the plot, but I would have liked to have seen him with the other heroes, instead of Lex. We saw so much of Lex before that, and after that in the Supergirl show, that I just kinda got burned out on Lex Luthor, even before the show (and the Arrowverse) began to severely decay.
Especially since he was so different than the 'regular' Superman on the shows. It was crazy to see how much more powerful he was, and that he probably would have killed the other Clark if Lois wasn't there. And now with the whole mess with HBO, they have this perfect medium with which to do a miniseries with him, and they're doing nothing with it. It just sucks.
Yep!! Even after The Boys scene people went back to that scene to compare it
Superman Returns has always felt like a super underrated movie in my eyes. Happy to see a few more people who enjoy it as well.
I totally with you Jarock. “Superman returns” was marred by disgruntled fans more than critics, which surpeingly gave the movie strong reviews.
Cheers from Mexico 🤘😄🍺🎉🐌!!!
I like that Kevin Spacey plays Lex mostly on the "always thinking and calculating" side of his personality. They very easily could have had Lex get angry or freak out when they told him Boris got hit with the piano. But he instantly started calculating the meaning of what they said rather than spontaneously react. And then very calmly say "Oh, we've got to go." with just a small, tiny hint of panic.
Branbon was currently playing another character in the Arrowverse. So they announced his return by having him do the shirt rip at a comcon panel for the show he was on. He also made a superman 3 reference in Crysis to make things clearer or muddier.
I suppose the easiest way to reconcile the continuity is to say that Superman III happens a short time after Superman Returns. It sorta helps to explain why Clark is open to a new love interest in the third movie, right? And who's to say that Richard isn't off somewhere in the background raising Superman's illegitimate son while Kal-El ponders the pros and cons of dating a single mom from Smallville? Too bad that both Lana and Richard died in that horrible off-screen tragedy between III and IV, though.
Brandon Routh reprising Superman in Crisis On Infinite Earths was awesome. Especially joining forces with Tyler Hoechlin's Superman.
"Technically, this isn't the first time I've fought myself"
TRIVIA: The older lady that passes at the beginning of the film is Noel Neill, who was the original Lois Lane from both the radio show and The Adventures of Superman TV series. The radio show and TV series is where the "It's a bird, it's a plane..." phrase came from.
I think Routh did a fine job as Clark/Superman, under what would have been so much pressure to take on this role. Of all the issues I have with this film, he's not one of them.
Also, the bartender with the white hair is Jack Larson who played Jimmy Olsen in The Adventures of Superman.
One of the things I like about the entire Superman franchise is how almost every movie and show will have an actor from a previous movie/show somewhere. Even if it's just a bit part or something.
they did a fantastic job giving the feel of the original superman movies to me. brandon routh was an incredible stand in for christopher reeves. i say stand in because that seems to be their intent. Cavill got his own superman, routh was meant to be reeves. Like holden said, they tried to modernize it. Again, i think they did a fantastic job with the constraints they were obviously under with expectations.
Oh that's cool.
She and Kirk Alyn (the first live action Superman) are also in Superman: The Movie as the couple (little Lois's parents) on the train young Clark is racing.
7:18 Brandon Routh nailed his role so hard. He was the absolute worthiest of successors to that iconic Superman.
I believe Brandon Routh certainly captured the spirit of Christopher Reeve's Superman. I think the movie is underrated. It's not perfect, but it definitely fits well the original idea of Superman, inho. Great reaction!
It was good for nostalgia to dive back into the originals but I just hated the ending had little action. The first half was pretty good.
@@taylorpack7705My thoughts exactly.
I liked it when I saw it in the theater as a kid, but now I can see that it definitely has major flaws. Especially for the reasons you said.
I wish we got the sequel though, as it apparently would’ve had Brainiac and Superman’s kid fighting alongside him
@@taylorpack7705 fuck action ev erything is action these days anyway
You’re absolutely right Taylor! “Superman Returns”’is one the last decade’s most criminally underrated films.
Let’s wait and see how James Gunn’s version fares. The trailer looks extremely thought provoking and Williams modernized, guita driven theme, though I still prefer the powerful orchestral score!
This movie has one of the greatest line ever uttered by Superman. Lois: "You know Richard takes me flying all the time." Superman: "Not like This." Can't fight against that.
True but Superman was trying to seduce a woman who belonged to another man now. That's wrong. Superman from pre-crisis would never have done such a thing. Superman from Action Comics 398 might have but only because he was exposed to silver kryptonite.
@@trhansen3244 No he wasn't.
@@BoxkerpHe was, though. Be honest.
@@UltimateKyuubiFox I am honest. No, he wasn't. But was trying to her know that she made a mistake, responding to a comment that was meant to hurt him and make him suffer for leaving. And she doesn't belong to anyone, but if she was considering herself in a stable relationship, she wouldn't have done that. So you be honest.
I agree with Holden. I think this is a solid 8. I think Brandon Routh did not get nearly enough credit for the performance. He was channeling Chris Reeves through the entire movie while still bringing some of himself to the role. The film itself would have actually benefitted from a new villain rather than bringing Lex back yet again, but that said. Spacey did a great job in that role.
I love this movie and Brandon. I got the privilege of meeting him in person as well as a picture and autograph picture of a Superman photo. Everyone was asking for him to sign other things and I was the only one who asked for Superman. I told him he was my favorite Superman and the smile he gave was so genuine.
I love this.
If Jen hasn't seen it I HIGHLY recommend Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. As Brandon Routh and Chris Evans are in it along with a bunch of other people. On top of just being a great movie.
I concur
I enjoyed Brie Larson in this one.
I watched it for the hell of it one night when I was high and it was awesome.
Yessssssss
God yes. Love that movie
The short sequence of the henchman drawing his pistol as a last-ditch attack, and the bullet simply bouncing off Superman's eyeball is fantastic. I always think of it when I hear the phrase "it was then that he realised he fucked up"... Absolute brown-trousers time for that guy lol.
Doesn't superman blink? I would think he would blink something going towards your eye. A normal reaction.
@@dolphinsrr For a human, yes.
The part where he said -"statistically speaking, it's still the safest way to travel" was an homage to Christopher's Reeve Superman; who says almost the exact same line in the first movie after saving Lois from the helicopter accident; Reeves said --"statistically speaking, of course, it's still the safest way to travel" (he had the "of course" in between, but other than that it was verbatim)
And Lois fainted both times.
Speaking honestly, this is was the first Superman movie I ever watched, and I actually loved it. I especially love the way Kevin Spacey played Lex Luthor, given what legal drama he's been embroiled in as of late, and how Brandon Routh differentiates Clark Kent from Superman by altering the tone of his voice and posture like Christopher Reeve did.
I really wished they made more Superman movies with Brandon Routh. I think he was perfect to take up the mantle of the Chris Reeve Superman.
There was a sequel planned that apparently would’ve had Brainiac as well as Superman’s kid fighting alongside him.
Unfortunately though, the film didn’t make enough money to get a sequel
I remember watching a behind-the-scenes moment with Parker Posey for this movie. On her last day of filming, she had taken a moment to thank everyone for her experience and then proceeded to give out refreshments. I could very well be wrong but I seem to remember that they were donuts and muffins with coffee; probably some cookies too. The details of the food elude me, however I remember her gesture.
Awesome seeing you guys watching this one. I worked at Panavision during the production for this movie. A lot of us were nervous for the entire duration due to it being the first Hollywood picture shot on the HD Genesis camera. 2005-2006 was still the early days of digital filmmaking. Thankfully it was a pretty smooth production process aside from a few issues during the cinetape transfer. Bryan Singer was at the demonstration we put out in early 2005 for the genesis camera. I think that's when he was convinced at the potential of digital cinema.
After years of missing C/Reeve as superman I loved B/Routh as perfect homage to C/Reeve's legacy. B/Routh should've had at least 2 more movies as Superman. When I watched 'Superman: The movie' I came out flying out of the cinema. 'Superman Returns' - I came out grinning like a child. Superman was BACK! 8/10
Superman Returns feels like a closing of the book on that version of the character. Clark/Superman Loves Lois was the heart of the original movie. Where else where he and Lois going to go after this one? I'm just glad I got what I got when this film came out: a proper goodbye to that Superman, and a tribute to Chris Reeve, who played him best.
I was such a huge Christopher Reeve fan that Brandon was a perfect way to ease me into new Supermen - it felt so true to the original character - warms my heart as a tribute to the originals.
The “It’s a bird, it's a plane, it's Superman!” line actually isn’t from the comics, though it would later be referenced in them throughout the years. It comes from the introduction made first for the Superman radio serial and immortalized by the introduction to the Max Fleischer Superman cartoon serials. I would highly recommend watching the serials as they solidified a lot of the modern Superman mythos and are all available for free on RUclips.
Just like another Superman phrase that was popular for a while, but is trivia now. In the radio serials, Superman would call out the phrase "Up, up, and awaaaaaaaaaaay" to let the audience know he was taking flight. It made its way into the comics and some of the cartoons for a while....but it fell out of favor as being too corny.
You forgot to mention George reeves from the tv show. From the late 50 to early sixties. Which they mention in the intro of the show.

I saw Superman Returns in the theaters. The second the movie cut to the credits, a guy in the front row stood right up and shouted "I'm so angry, I can't even think straight!!" And he stormed out of the theater. To this day that's the most extreme and most angry reaction I've ever seen for a movie.
I enjoyed this movie and I thought Brandon did a wonderful job. I really like the scenes where he is rushing off to the forming island and he sees the affects of it heading to the city. The scenes that follow really reminded me of the scenes in Superman 1 where he was rushing all over trying to save people everywhere after the missile hit.
I've always really enjoyed this movie. It actually shocked me to hear so many people hating this movie because me and my family all loved it. The airplane scene was fantastic. The scene where superman is taking all the bullets and gets shot in the eye is so epic! And of course superman saving the city when the new island was growing was done really well. Brandon did a fantastic job. Of course no one can outdo Christopher Reeves but Brandon still did a great job and it was awesome seeing him reprise his role in the Arrowverse Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover episodes.
Also, i cant help but think of that horrible spoof movie shortly after this movie came out, Epic Movie, where they spoof the Superman getting shot in the eye scene, "OH MY GOD YOU SHOT MY EYE! WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!"😂😂😂😂😂
Brandon was a good choice to replicate Christopher Reeves. His look, voice and mannerisms are real close. Frank Langella who played Perry was Skeletor in the Masters of the Universe movie in the 80s. He was in Disney “now you see it…”.
Fun fact is the guy who is the bartender is the original Jimmy Olsen in the George Reeve adventures of superman in the first tv show. And the woman who Lex was with played the original Lois lane. Noelle neal

Having grown up with Christopher Reeve as Superman, Brandon Routh did an outstanding job as the man of steel and as Clark Kent. The connection to the Christopher Reeve universe is clear in this movie. The creator(s) made a nod here and there during the movie both to Reeve and to the everyone who had a hand in making the earlier movies.
Holden, you're not alone. I really enjoyed this version of Superman too. Don't think anyone could have captured the "feel" of Reeve Superman this well.
I agree with Holden. This movie is underrated. Brandon Routh was a GREAT Superman and its a shame he didn’t get a trilogy at least. He deserved more. Overall this film is pretty solid and enjoyable
27:16 In the comics it's explained that the reason he can lift things like this without breaking them, or going right thru them is because he has a bioelectric aura that surrounds his body, giving him invulnerability beyond just his skin being super dense/tough, it normally only extends out about a millimeter or so (which is why even when his superman suit is not made of Kryptonian materials, it's not damaged by bullets or fires, etc), but when he's trying to lift something big like that, he unconsciously extends that aura around whatever he's lifting, strengthening it enough so that it doesn't break from him doing so.
I really wanted Superman, on the plane, to be like, "Does the world need Superman now?!?!"
Or... "You were saying"
@@zhorenlogg Oooooooh🔥

I don’t think anyone has ever been robbed of an opportunity more than Brandon Routh. He was without a doubt amazing as Superman. This movie to me is a love letter to Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel. I would’ve loved 3 movies of Brandon as the Man of Steel.
Well, I grew up with the C.R. Superman movies (Telling my age). Brandon Routh did an exceptional job portraying the Clark Kent and Superman from the earlier films. All the actors did a great job of wanting me to see a sequel to this movie. It gets extra points from me for the nostalgia of childhood. I'm going to give it a 9 because it captures the storytelling of the original. I feel like it's really good art. Thanks Holden and Jenn for posting fun content to watch!
Jen's reaction to Holden discussing the "boat problem" physics is priceless!
Brandon is a joy, even when he was The Atom in the CW shows, and later went on to play 'Kingdom Come' Superman opposite my current fav (and the guy who made me realise how beautiful a character Clark is) Tyler Hoechlin.
I didn't want to like Tyler, but he's killing it. Perfect Clark, Dad mode. And a believable mild mannered Superman.
In the cw crossover Brandon played the same superman as in this movie just older they even mantion that his son jayson died and thats his sons name in this movie.
12:58 Holden had me in tears with the Tommy Wiseau "OH hi, Krypton." I laughed for like 5 minutes straight! Classic. I love you guys so much. My favorite reaction channel hands down.
Started laughing because of the impression and continued laughing when I saw Spacey's hair lmao
18:39 "But how!" was quickly followed up by Lex Luther giving us a mechanical demonstration with the crystal was just so well timed. 🤣
Was genuinely SO excited for this one. It gets a lot of hate but it's my favorite Superman movie, it's the only movie that still can make me feel like the 6 year old I was when I first saw this
The scene where Lois is looking out the plane window and sees the blur of Superman flying past while the music swells is one of, if not my favorite scene out of any movie.
You can see in her eyes that she is just realizing who came back.
Holden is usually so on top of the character mythos, that I'm surprised he didn't mention the subtle homage to the original cover of Action Comics #1, the first appearance of Superman. In the movie, where Superman catches Kitty's car just before it careens into the café, the wide shot shows him holding the underside of the car near the rear axle, with the nose of the car pointed down at the ground. This is exactly how you see Superman on the cover of Action Comics #1.
He may not of mentioned it, but they did have cover of the first comic shown. So the homage was there.
I really liked the movie and Brandon Routh got to redeem himself portraying this character again in the CW crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths where this Superman is considered the same version as in the Kingdom Come storylines in the comics. That may be fun for you to react to as the event gathered many movie and tv series live action versions as well as the Batman the Animated series version of Bruce Wayne.
Ya know, just because it’s not mentioned, doesn’t mean Richard doesn’t know that Jason isn’t his son because as mentioned, the timing of conception vs. Lois meeting Richard would be difficult for him to miss. Obviously they never told him Richard wasn’t his father and Richard wanted to play that role in Jason’s life so it played out that way. Now that the excitement has died down and Jason is beginning to demonstrate his Kryptonian heritage, I’m sure a confab will take place. He’ll need guidance.
What I’m curious about is why Jason seemed to be so sickly. Might Lois, being aware of who the daddy is, is already concocting a secret identity for him to fall back on when he’s not the new Superman? Or do Kryptonian’s start weaker on Earth before gaining their abilities? Kinda like they did in ‘Man of Steel’? Would that explain why young Clark is wearing glasses while leaping through the corn fields because that’s always struck me as odd.
Since Lois has no memory of being with Superman after he hypnotized her, she would have to think that Superman somehow took advantage of her without her knowing. there should have been more animosity and mistrust.
My favorite part of this movie is when Superman stopped a bullet with his eyeball.
It kind of makes you wonder why in Superman 2 Superman looks away after zapping that wall during a fight. He didn't have to look away to be safe.
You guys are hilarious. “Have fun with RICHARD” 😂
This is the Superman "Pre-Sequel-RetCon-Remake" movie.
These versions of Supes and Luthor were really well made... but the daaaamn script.
Parents love this movie for some reason, you show this to any parent and they will overlook the plotholes completely so... the tone captures que essence of the original perfectly. They just went over there heads with the continuity, even during this same movie.
In some versions of the comic things (Byrne era) it is explained that things are lighter when Superman flies with them as he is
flying them the same way he flies himself. I love this film. It is a beautiful love letter to the original film while also being a sequel that adds new elements.
The comics usually explain it as his energetic aura from his solar eradicated cells extends to what he's physically touching. Similar to how when the Flash grabs and carries someone they don't get ripped to shreds by his speed.
27:54 Boston Timing the shake as soon as Superman Lands is hilarious timing.
One specific power that doesn't really get any mention is That Superman can generate heat. Because his body takes in solar energy his body can also give off heat. This is how they explain how he can fly fairly high with Lois wearing thin clothes, or nightwear (like in the first move)
Or that his aura from his solar eradicated cells extends to whatever he's physically touching. Just like when the Flash grabs and carries someone they don't get ripped to shreds from the speed. It why he can carry huge objects like the plane for longer then their structural integrity would normally allow.
@@jessecortez9449 Not so sure that's really a thing. But I think you meant solar irradiated, not eradicated. As for holding the plane, that's just decades of practicing with his physical strength. We see what can happen if he holds on with too much force; he tore the wing off. There's even a similar scene in the animated series where he grabs the tail of a falling plane and pulls the back fin right off. It's simply balancing his strength vs the object.
Brandon Routh was my Superman growing up and I always wished that he would cross paths with Bale's Batman. So glad he got to revisit the character in Crisis on Infinite Earths as Kingdom Come Superman. I really feel like he embodied the role of Superman considering it was a continuation of the Christoper Reeve films.
18:02 one of the best reactions I’ve ever seen. Lol. Seeing Jen react to that was priceless 👏🏼
I might be in the minority, but I always preferred Routh over Cavill. A couple of things I've noticed when initially watching this one, and then later Man of Steel. 1). Kumar - the actor must have been and hug Superman fan and begged to be in the movie. Probably under the condition that he does not recite any lines, which made his presence awkward. Him being a villain kind of took me out the movie in disbelief. 2). Kate Bosworth's Lois was horribly written. She wants to have her cake and eat it too. 3). The argument of collateral damage in Man of Steel - Routh's Superman didn't let anything happen to the people of the city. He even lasered the shards of glass that were falling. I feel like Cavill's Superman would have just let it fall.
That was one of my main disappointments with Cavill's first movie. Every other movie Supes would fight the villain but also try to minimalize casualties. In Man of Steel he just went all out fighting Zod, not even thinking bout what could be happening to anyone else. Which makes the part where Zod is threatening to heat vision civilians and Supes wanting to prevent that weird. Didn't seem like he cared up to that point.
Even funnier, Supes keeping civilians safe by controlling where Zoe's head pointed. Like couldn't Zod just avert his gaze to the right? Aim his eyes and look right? Or does heat vision only work looking straight? lololol
Brandon Routh was severely underrated as Superman. He was phenomenal as Kingdom Come Superman on the lame CW shows. I am shocked nothing came of that. Brandon Routh really overshadowed Tyler Hoechlin's Superman when he was Kingdom Come Superman.
I watched that episode of Crisis just for the Superman cameos.
Oh my, Brandon Routh just commands a room. He’s just a massive presence in that suit. I’m so glad he agreed to do Kingdom Come Superman. I cried seeing him as Superman again.
@@cassieo Agreed. I recall interviews with the cast and they were all pretty overtaken by his presence as KC supes. I actually thought we would see more of him but they eliminated him in ep 3 of crisis right when the action was to start, which was lame. I suspect the CW did not have the budget for licensing for more episodes with KC Superman.
I also really like Brandon Routh, and felt really bad that we did not get another Superman film with him.
I was not so fond of some of the story, Superman having a son, him being a bit of a creep and Luthor basically repeating his plan, destroy land to sell land.
Still a solid 8 for me. Love the musical score
It's funny that both James Marsdans characters of Richard & Cyclops both got their girlfriends stolen from them by the Hero, who just shows up.
Since you guys are on a Superman kick lately, I think you should watch Brightburn. It's a horror movie take on what if Clark wasn't a good kid. Holden asked in a previous Superman video "How do you discipline a kid with powers like that?". Well, Brightburn answers that question in a horror/thriller movie fashion. It's really good.
Ah yes the completely original and not overdone concept of “what if Superman was EVIL”
@@Andrew-Bastin Sure, it's oversaturated now with Ultraman, Injustice, Omni-Man (not superman but basically the same thing) DCEU's Superman, and that one comic where Clark grows up in Russia.
But that doesn't mean it's not a good movie.
Ps. I never said it wad original. Stop trying to be edgy.
@@Saimeren not being edgy just stating a fact, if anything it’s stories like Brightburn, the Boys, etc that are trying to be “edgy”.
Agreed. The traditional Superman he is portrayed as a conservative. A good person who wants to help others. Brightburn is basically a liberal. Who only wants to kill, destroy, rape and burn everything in sight. Quite a compelling contrast.
@@Andrew-BastinEdgy would be the Randroid Snyderman where they had a perfectly good actor and never let him be Superman until an end credit scene in a throwaway movie in a defunct film verse.
I was obsessed with this movie as a teen. So sad it never got sequels :(
You must watch 3 and 4, they are so funny
I feel Brandon Rough remains for Superman franchise just as George Lazenby did for James Bond. They both had only one movie, and although both were not the best for each rol, they sure had their moments. I remember one of George Lazenby as James Bond, in this sequence a girl flee from him and he says to the camera: "This never happened to the other Bond!"
Also I don't know if you know this, but Henry Cavill actually auditioned for this role as well, but lost to Brandon Routh because of Rouths resemblance to Reeve.
1:10 I think the phrase you're looking for is a "sliding timescale". Happens more often than not when it comes to movie sequels.
When this first came out i was 13, and this movie inspired my love for Superman! the music is so good in some parts of the movie, and these scenes/sequences:
- the intro
-plane scene
-the "you're not one of them" scene
-the beat down/healing of the sun parts in the end
Also i LOVE that Brandon Routh got to replay his character in 2019's Crisis event in the Arrowerse, Kingdom come Superman!
Also2: You guys should watch Superman and Lois, that show is so good! Really focusing on the family aspect of Superman
The bartender (Jack Larson) played Jimmy Olsen and the old woman in the beginning (Noel Neil) played Lois Lane in the George Reeves series. They and other Superman alumni from other projects have guest starred in other Superman related projects. It’s kind of an unspoken tradition.
7:58 best part when Jen realizes what happened to the other dog. Lol. Priceless.
Just gonna throw it out there: Brandon Routh is the second best Superman ever. And I say that thinking that, honestly, there really have not been any bad portrayals. I've enjoyed Tom Welling and Henry Cavill in the role, and Tyler Hoechlin is solid too. But after Reeve, I think Routh just nails both Clark and Superman pretty damn perfectly.
Fun fact-When Superman was first created, he couldn’t fly but would leap from roof to roof. Hence the phrase, “Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound!” But when he was being adapted for radio and cartoon shorts, they realized it would be just easier to give him the power of flight.
I think Brandon was a great choice to replace Christopher Reeves. He had tough shoes to fill and did a pretty good job. Sad they never made anymore movies with him. Thanks for the reaction. Keep smiling 👍🙂
There was another film planned that apparently would’ve had Brainiac but this film wasn’t financially successful enough to get another one
In reference to your boat problem, Superman generates a psychic field around objects he’s lifting, so he’s not simply lifting the object where he’s grabbing it, but is lifting it with even pressure around its entire form so that the object won’t break up.
Is this in the comics?
This is a good explanation for the problem.
@@907CarterE it is (: Batman calls it bio-telekinesis. So he’s technically not just relying on his super strength, but also his telekinetic abilities to lift large objects.
I was glad to see you two had the same reaction I did to this movie.
1.) Superman was a whiny stalker,
2.) Lois was horrible to Richard,
3.) Richard was a good guy who got screwed over at every turn,
And as a bonus,
4.) Depending on if we were in the Donner cut continuity, tgen Jor-El nor the Fortress of Solitude would have been around for Lex to go to in the first place.
I believe, even in the theatrical version of Superman II, Superman destroyed the Fortress in the end.
Holden would make the perfect, most petty Superman ever and I would watch every second of it 🤣
27:15 I would say the bigger problem with that part is that Superman should not be able to lift an *entire island made of kryptonite*, while there's also a *piece of kryptonite broken off inside him.* That's not how Superman works, at all.
I wonder how many people had to sign off on that before it made it into the movie. Blows my mind.
18:42 Jen: “But HOW?!!!”
Lex: “Okay… I’ll show you” 😂
I like Brandon Ralph's Superman, probably better than Henry Cavill's. He has the hopefulness that I expect in Superman.
I don't know why i love this movie so much, honestly I love Brandon routh way more than Henry Cavill, but of course, the goat is Christopher Reeve to this day.❤ I know this movie isn't perfect, it got problems but i can see them and still love it ❤
Poor James Marsden ,I think he has more screen time in this, then in the first three X-Men movies combined. Also in one of the first episodes of the Superman animated series he saves a plane in a similar way as the scene in this movie.
I’m with you Holden, this is a great film! It rekindled my enjoyment of Superman as a character

To be fair Superman gives off some kind of forcefield when grabbing objects way bigger than himself. Grabs the end of a ship and just lifts the entire thing without ripping it in half. Compared to Hulk who would just smash and go through objects
The plane scene is one the best scenes ever. Great
Always enjoyed this version and they couldn’t have found a better actor to portray the Superman Christopher Reeve made so memorable
"One needs to make creepy friends in order to survive." Ironic considering Singer and Spacey's involvement in this.
I love this movie! it captures the same feeling 1 and 2 had. Solid 8
This movie also retcons Superman lll and Superman lV out of existence.
I literally watched this movie 3 days ago and now your review pops ip on youtube😂. In modern day comic book films this feels a very realistic and calm take on superhero, not rushing anything and letting viewers take in the impact of every scene. Good film.
Brandon Routh does an excellent job portraying Christopher Reeve portraying Clark Kent/Superman!
As for the fictional physics of Superman being able to lift objects like the plane(s), the ship, etc.....and even people, there is lore that says he generates an invisible "force field" around his own body and whatever he touches. The same "force field" that allows him to fly also allows him to lift objects INTACT and touch, grab or carry them.
Oh how the dceu would have been so much better if this was the Superman that decided to keep going here are 5 of my favorite things about this movie
5 the twist with the kid
4 the overall look and cinematography of this movie is beautiful
3 Lex Luthor's opening scene
2 Brandon Ralph is still one of the best person ever play Superman
1 The shot of Superman having a gun shot in his eye
I agree with everyone about the plane rescue, its the most amazing scene ever. Lois seeing the red blur out the plane after so many years, for her and us was everything. If only they kept that energy throughout
Superman 3 and 4 are an experience that no one should miss out on!
I could happily wipe my experience of watching The Quest For Peace at the cinema... worst film I have ever seen and I've seen The Room... yeah
Agreed. Watching 3 and 4 made me appreciate Superman Returns more.
Bad experience!
@@trhansen3244 superman returns was a more serious film like man of steel.
@@dolphinsrr Man of Steel was terrible.
I definitely vote for reacting to Superman 3 and 4. I just want to see Jenn's reaction. (No matter what, IV will always be a part of my childhood.)
I actually liked Superman 3. Saw it as a child and likes Richard Pryor. I haven't seen it since then so I honestly can't say I'd still enjoy it.
@@Fairburne69 It feels like they wrote a Superman movie around Richard Pryor and comedy. They were more interested in getting Richard Pryor, than making a Superman movie.
Those two are so bad. I saw them when I was a child and I hated them still to this day.
@@biguy617 see if Jen still thinks this is the worst one after those lol
Part III does not have enough of Superman. And part IV has too much Nuclear (Joe Biden pronounces it Nukular, man!) Man. There are lots of problems with all of the films except Superman the Movie. I will have my assistant find my senior thesis on this topic.
I never thought about it before, but a Christian Bale Batman and Brandon Rothe Superman movie, would have been pretty good.
Routh is a good actor... And have similarities with Reeve's Superman ❤
I can honestly say the bonus features of Superman Returns of all the bts material ive seen is absolutely staggering & such a fascinating watch. Bryan really believed in this film & he was brimming with ideas. The bonus featuretes showcase him in my view as being a bit chaotic & there are many stories of being over budget during production that have surfaced & you can see why
My biggest celebrity sighting was at the Alamo Draft house in Austin Tx during the weekend premiere of “Superman Returns” and seated in the same theater was Quentin Tarantino a few rows down. The “Pulitzer Prizes are like Academy awards” line received the biggest laugh from him lol.
ACKCHEWALLY 🤓☝️ the quote “It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Superman!” Originally was used in the 1941 radio show 😃
My favorite Superman movie. No question.
I’ve always loved this movie, saw it in theaters and ever since then I was all for it. As the same for you Holden, I fully enjoyed Brandon being Superman and Kevin as Lex. But this movie is a great movie, the story for it (even if Lex did go back to the original Superman plot with him wanting the whole “land” aspect) but the action scenes and opening scene introducing Superman back to the world has been one of my favorite scenes, including the bullet to eye scene: iconic!! But what really sold me this movie was the music, it was so superb with the orchestra to the vocals. Just an all around fun great movie
This is the second best Superman movie. Anyone who thinks otherwise is probably an evil white supremacist racist ultra right wing MAGA anti-American communist dogwalker.
Mark 24:45. When this movie was still relatively new, actor Kevin Spacey hosted a televised on television retrospective about all things related to "Superman" and in it, he informed us of his audition to be "Clark Kent/Kal El/Superman", but Christopher got the role instead.
So maybe he is taking out his frustration now at being rejected? 😁
Holden NEVER let Jen go. She is the absolute best of all the reactors partners on RUclips. Keep up the great worker
The explained in the comics that superman creates an aura or something around him that lets him protect whatever he grabs and encompass it ... like magic... so he can catch planes and lift things without them breaking or can carry people when he flies so that they're protected.
Apparently the red sun wasn't enough so we needed to really jack up his powers.
The elderly sugar mama of Lex Luthor at the beginning was played by Noel Neill, who was Lois Lane in the color episodes of The Adventures of Superman from 1954 to 1958. The bartender at the press pub near The Daily Planet was played by Jack Larson, who was Jimmy Olsen for the 1951 Superman theatrical film and subsequent entire TV series from 1952 to 1958. Superman's catch and lowering of the antique automobile was a re-creation of the cover art for the very first appearance of Superman in 1938. (OK, I just saw that you knew that!) "Look, up in the sky!" "It's a bird!" "It's a plane!" though used in the introduction to the TV series, I believe was created by the writers of the radio series, who also invented his ability to fly among other expansions of his powers and abilities, which was originally just "the power to leap tall buildings in a single bound." The radio series also invented Perry White, Jimmy Olson, Inspector Henderson, and Kryptonite. The radio Superman also voiced the 1966 cartoon series narrated by Ted Knight, by which time the comics had given him heat vision inspired by the newly invented laser beam.
I believe the "It's a bird, it's a plane, it's Superman" saying came from the radio play in the 1940's. The old radio show added other things to the lore, such as Kryptonite, because when the voice actor who played Superman was on vacation, they came of with the idea, and some other guy would moan and groan in pain as Superman being exposed to the toxic radiation.
Speaking of planes, if you think back to the first season of The Boys where Maave begs Homelander to save the plane, he was voicing many of the same physics reasons it wouldn't work, and at least this movie tries to illustrate how challenging the concept is.
I agree what held the movie back was inserting Brandon Routh into the Reeves continuity. Had they gone with an original story, I think it would have had a stronger chance. But I think they were to stuck on the idea of Lois having a son from their night in Superman II, and a chance to use Marlon Brando's lines from the earlier films. I agree this is better than III and IV, and certainly better than what the Tim Burton/Nicolas Cage project would have been.
Superman was the first character who we define as a Superhero. Prior to that, comic books were a collection of reprinted newspaper comic strips and not much original content. Superman was the character that created the genre, and was the flagship of DC for many years before Batman eclipsed him in popularity and sales
When you were talking about Frank Langella playing a villain in another movie, I thought you were going to mention Skeletor from the Masters Of The Universe movie. LOL
I remember seeing this in the theater. I was still coming out of the depressed haze of September 11 (as I am sure many were).
That airplane scene really grabbed hold of me. I do draw a small parallel. Superman is supposed to have been gone for 5 years.
So seeing him for the first time in years doing something so miraculous as saving an airplane in the middle of a baseball stadium? I nearly cried with tears of joy. 🥲
