"I thought you were vengeance," she said, Batman also confused, not wanting to help until the prison that he figured out everything, he found the cause for all of this, and its him. Dude, how did you sit through a 3-hour film and still not figure out everything?
Fun fact: after this movie Paul Dano (the actor who played Riddler) wrote a prequel comic about his character. It is The Riddler: Year One. It’s worth checking out.
Bro sometimes I swear… they didn‘t play it up for the audience to think „he drowned and died“, like Black Panther it, it was like a symbolic baptism. Matt nitpicks the tiniest of things, but then can‘t comprehend the most obvious story-arc, like why the Riddler goons said „I‘m vengeance“ and what it means for the story of the film. Really frustrating.
6:37 So in the comics when they do Bruce's thought boxes the background looks like paper and the font looks like handwriting as if they're his journal entries and in this movie his narration is literally his journal entry, they even show the journal in the movie.
I just notice Falcone called Bruce "the prince of the city". That character did the same thing in Nolan's Begins when Bruce confronted Falcone in his bar. "You're Bruce Wayne, the prince of gotham; you'd have to go a thousand miles to meet someone didn't know your name"
I personally like it because it is realistic to a year 2 batman that doesn't have a tech company or lucius to help make THE Batmobile. I assume they supe it up next movie since this chase showed its not totally effective (not to mention a winter setting brings hope for more arctic gadgets and aesthetic). And it actually is similar to the Batmobile he had when he met jason todd im like 99% sure that was the inspo. It isnt my favorite design wise but for the universe purposes its my favorite if that makes sense
@@MattLaneFitness I mean they literally went for a "younger more inexperienced Batman" - who's a lot more "DIY" than just having a Lucius Fox make an assembly line of tanks. So having a tuned muscle car seems more realistic. It also makes pretty good sense, that Batman injects something that acts as adrenaline but looks like the "Venom" that Bane takes to make him a beast. It's a nice easter egg and potential hint towards Bane appearing in the future.
My 4th comment - it was raining the entire time because that was literally a plot point in the movie. They had extensive rainfall, leading to the water levels rising and the sea walls being broken to flood the city. It was not just a cinematic choice
To Matt's point about "the building blocks for the second movie" he's actually very much right. Matt Reeves has gone on record for explaining that this is the Year 2 version of not only Batman, but each of the iconic characters (the batmobile is early stage, Catwoman's mask is just a ski mask, Riddler's outfit-- hell, it's the reason Penguin got his own developed show) everyone is here, but they're not quite established and there's plenty of room to grow. So by the time the Batman Part II comes out there should be a decent amount of development for everyone and everything.
I don’t know why you’re being so affirmative when what it is has never been confirmed- it’s clearly a stimulant but it’s more like this universe’s version of Venom given the color (sorry to say epinephrine isn’t green)
@ It has been confirmed. Almost immediately after the film was released. Reeves made it green as a cinematic enhancement. Same with the C4 being giant fireballs, when in reality, they’re essentially flameless to the eye.
Batman cut the THICK electrified cable above him because that was the most practical way to cut it in one swift strike, you can’t do the same if you’re chest is right by the cable, you don’t have a swing from that angle and closeness, it logical. If you start slowly cutting the cable up close you’d get electrified before you cut through it which was his whole point. He also wanted to get down to help the people right after and the fall in and rise from the water was a visual baptism for his transformation from vengeance to hope
This. It's a pretty direct homage to the No Man's Land run of Batman comics, where Gotham is essentially shut off from the rest of the world and it becomes a massive factional power grab. We just saw the criminal underboss Falcone die, the Riddler had already killed several high ranking governmental officials and nearly had the new voice for mayor killed as well, then flooding the city making transport between areas near impossible. The movie was hardly "everything ending well" and more "Batman has figured his shit out and just in time because the real work is just starting."
I mean at the start of this Holden did say “he’s only been Batman for about 2 years” so his “Batmobile” not being like the classic would make sense. He hasn’t upgraded it yet
The issue I have with Matt is he gets hung up on things that are baked into the genre/topic like Yes, a face mask vaguely cat shaped isnt perfect face covering or Batman getting inspiration from noir thus the soft speaking/grumbling. It feels like he'd watch Les Mis and ask "why are they always singing? Why isnt anyone reacting to this guy breaking into song?"
People so picky smh- NOT EVERYONE HAS TO ENJOY THINGS THE WAY YOU ENJOY THEM! That’s why it’s really fun for me to see reactions (especially of Matt), to be exposed to different views and ways of thinking…watching something just to be affirmed all the time is exhausting
"Nobody died." Matt, after reacting to the grisly murders of several Gotham public servants. lol, don't ever change, Matt. I feel like you were sucked in for the first half and started to waver through the second half (basically before and after the batmobile chase). I'm hoping Reeves whittles away some of the excess in the sequel; this first movie has so much good in it, but it's all stretched a bit thin (and this is coming from a huge fan of the movie). And, yes, that's meant to be a proto-batmobile that Bruce basically built on his own, hence why it's so barebones. For me, that batmobile and the chase are top tier based on presentation/execution alone, _especially_ the sound design. Edit: one other thing to add. It's been noted ad nauseam that Bruce in this isn't interested in being Bruce, and probably doesn't know how, but it's also worth pointing out that he's not really Batman just yet. That's why he's stealthy in one instance and stomping around the next, has a batmobile that causes hearing damage when he starts it up, and why he almost seems to not really care about the innocents around him (many have pointed out the difference between the guy on the train platform vs. the girl on the roof of Gotham Square Garden). He's entirely fixated on the criminal element and being Vengeance, ignoring the people and inadvertently enabling the rise of his insular nemeses (Riddler, Penguin), which is what he realizes at the end. His whole "not there yet" character arc is more comprehensive than most realize. I think that's why he and Gordon are such a good match in this movie: they're both lawful good, but Gordon is to the mob (systemic) what Batman is to the Riddler (singular).
The 2nd half of this film definitely dragged along. Wasn't a big fan of the act 3 climax. It totally went against Riddler's original motivations. Also, the Joker scene was cringed and forced. Completely unnecessary. Having said that, Pattinson did a good job as Batman even if Bruce Wayne was pretty nonexistent.
I always loved how they showed Batman’s detective skills in this movie cause that’s how it was like in the comics! Batman would walk into a crime scene and be like “ok you missed this, this and this. There’s evidence over here, blood stain over there.” They portrayed his IQ very well, I always thought that was overlooked a lot in previous adaptations. Him deciphering the ciphers and solving the riddles were a testament to how smart he is. Matt Reeves did a fantastic job at giving us a fresh story with a young Batman while also paying homage to the original comics. Can’t wait for Part 2!
A funny thing I noticed about the song towards the beginning (Something In The Way - Nirvana) is that when Bruce gets back to the Batcave, you can see him turn down the music to pay attention to the TV, indicating the music was diegetic. Which means he was literally listening to Nirvana that whole time just to be extra emo 😂
Good catch, Matt. Yes, the blur on the edges of frame are due to this movie using anamorphic lenses. It’s an old technique from the 1970s. The film is shot in a square aspect ratio in order to maximize film quality by using a greater surface area of the film stock and then the squished image is stretched out onto widescreen format which creates blurred edges and oval lens flares. Spielberg used it in Raiders. Anamorphic creates a retro feel.
My favorite thing about this movie is that it shows how flawed batman is and how he starts to overcome that in order to become the true hero Gotham needs, not a symbol of vengeance but a symbol of hope
This whole movie I feel like is if the 60's Adam West Batman was taken seriously. The batmobile is closer to that style (also you can see all the pieces of it in the batcave. He built it himself) and even the suit is a armor version of the 60's suit, It even has the Eyebrow highlights in the right lighting.
Grateful for ya. Legit glad a couple ah friends watching a flick can do that much for you. For real it’s still rad to me even after all this time of doing it. ❤️💪🏽
Admittedly haven’t been following your content much over the past several years, but seeing this pop on my feed reminded me of the OF my friend watches content. Glad to see Matt back, hopefully he doesn’t have a terrible take on the movie 😂
I think what’s so fun about this Batmobile, for me, is that he built it. The entire thing is custom, but in a homemade way. The engine is a repurposed jet engine. Plus it gives Adam West Batmobile vibes
53:23 if he would have cut down there he still would have been electrocuted I’m not sure what Matt’s trying to get at here, it’s a live wire that, as I understood was low and the water was rising to reach and would shock all the people in the water. Had Batman cut low (which I’m not sure how he would have since he was holding onto the wire) he still would have been electrocuted and fallen into the water
I think this film is a fantastic Batman film but I understand why some people don't like it. I definitely think The Penguin is better. I think Matt Reeves captured the world of Batman better than any other director. This film is the most Batman film ever made, it was made for Batman fans. I enjoyed it because I'm a huge Batman fan. But it's not for everyone and that's fine. I hope they watch Batman: Mask of the Phantasm next it's the best Batman film. Kevin Conroy is the greatest Batman of all time.
True, but it was a really cheap way to do it. Felt more like they are trying to get brownie points than actually tackling the systemic racism issue. It was throw in randomly instead of also being a plot of the movie.
I think something missed was this is year one Batman. None of the others have done this version of him. So he's not big. His suit and tech are all the first version like the Batmobile and his lair. Alfred is still young. He is also still figuring out what it means to be Batman. Every other has been an older established Batman deep into his story.
We literally see Christian bale become Batman for the first time. His first movie is called Batman Begins. I think he technically only operates as Batman for a few years in those films.
@@dericplummer9272yes but Begins goes from beginner to pretty much fleshed out Batman fairly quickly. He doesn’t have a prototype Batmobile, he immediately has high tech gadgets by the third act, we see him developing the suit but it goes from working progress to fully formed suit by like the end of the first act. The Batman stays in the process but also his Bruce phase, when Bale’s Batman returns to Gotham for the first time for the trial, that’s the phase Rob’s Bruce is in for the whole movie
@@dericplummer9272 As someone who loves Nolan's version of Bats, he does skip some of the learning curve we could see Bruce go through as Batman, the training scenes with the league are great for explaining and showing him learn, but as Batman learning the ropes of his stuff, not so much. That saud one of my fav descriptions of just starting Batman is Arkham Origins, and The Batman reminds me of it, so I may be biased
love you both, and I'm a cis white male: it's not weird for a black marginalized daughter of a white (I'm also Italian and sorry, we are white) to use the phrase "white privilege" when discussing her foundational trauma in a movie about systemic blindness. love you
No he stopped on purpose. He wouldn’t just run over penguin. Selina and Gordon were moments away from getting killed, Batman let everyone escape so he could save them
If you look at the BattinsonMobile from the back, you'll see a very definite bat shape. Also, it does have the obligatory rocket engine. So, yes, indeed, it is a proper Batmobile. It's not *the* Batmobile, of course. That's the one that Adam west drove
I think the green thingy he injected near the end might be Bane goop (venom), which is technically a drug that makes you more violent and strong. Judging by the anger he suddenly had, it might indeed be the case. So he probably dealt with Bane during his first year and "borrowed" some venom or found where to buy it. Or maybe it is actually adrenaline, IDK
46:35 It's also a good visual representation of the duality of Batman: he's simultaneously the monster in the shadows for the criminals of Gotham and the single glimmer of light/hope for the innocent of Gotham to follow.
After every single marvel movie in the mcu, and half the other movies since 2000, you have finally found a movie that Matt LEGITIMATELY looked like he enjoyed watching
Also, Matt -- when he was electrocuting the gunman on the L-train platform, he was forcing the guy to discharge the other five rounds involuntarily. He had the dude's gun arm in his left hand while tazing his neck with his right.
I can't believe I am just noticing the change of the channel's name. I don't know how long ago it changed, but I love it. Jen definitely deserves her recognition up there as your parter in life and crime. Being the feminist that I am, though, I feel her name should be first. 😂😉 Kidding, of course.
Green stuff he injected is "venom" which is a reference to BANE. Can't wait till Matt watches Penguin and he says "ohhhh now things are making more sense" lol
I love Matt's commentary but he really needs to ease up on his critiques of realism in film. Sometimes you need to suspend belief in order to achieve atmosphere and mood; that's what the constant rain does, and is an homage to Seven. We're also not watching these films to get a realistic view on everything, we look for moments of relatability within fictional worlds. I think Matt also forgets that Bane exists in Batman, and so the "green goo" could be on the same level of unrealism as Bane's serum.
Something great from Robert Pattinson is the movie "Remember Me" which he did during his Twilight days. Completely unnoticed, probably due to his time in Twilight overshadowing everything else. But Pierce Brosnan plays his dad in that movie, and it's a really, really good watch. Drama, so nothing fantastical or supernatural about it :D
Matt is the kinda person who enjoys pointing out all the unrealistic stuff in a super hero movie. I get he is your bud, but he is not enjoyable to watch a movie with his commentary.
You must remember that this is a year 2 Batman. He still putting it all together. Gadgets, the batmobile, philosophy, detective skills even the Bruce persona is either missing or in continuous development.
Coincidentally I just rewatched this movie a few days ago. Took me way too long to realize that “Im vengeance” isn’t just a cool one-liner, it’s literally the name Bruce gave his crime fighting alter ego. Batman is a name that the city came up with, for obvious reasons.
I think people will be more interested in the video game series y'all are doing after Jen gets better with the controls. I, personally, had trouble watching the whole series due to how much she struggles with the controls. I think I'd be much more invested if she got used to gaming.
As an old guy (56) who loved the early detective comics I feel like THIS one is closer to my view of Batman - which surprised me because “Pattinson?!?” - but I was really impressed with his take on it. Loved the noir of this too (which can be cheesy) and Paul Dano’s take. The audiobook before released at this time was a great background on Bruce too.
The way Matt touches Holdens arm every time something makes him happy😭

@@DevynTheDude14Potheads too
6:37 So in the comics when they do Bruce's thought boxes the background looks like paper and the font looks like handwriting as if they're his journal entries and in this movie his narration is literally his journal entry, they even show the journal in the movie.
Ahh a year one enthusiast I see
I just notice Falcone called Bruce "the prince of the city". That character did the same thing in Nolan's Begins when Bruce confronted Falcone in his bar. "You're Bruce Wayne, the prince of gotham; you'd have to go a thousand miles to meet someone didn't know your name"
This Batmobile is actually more of a Batmobile than all the tanks that have been in the movies
Mehhhhhhhh it differs from what I saw as a kid so it is automatically wrong and anything that deviates from that is also wrong😂jk jk
Like 1 tank you mean. Its like the 2nd last in batmobile list
@@Christian-el2bz that would be dope. Wish they would’ve indicated that in some way but from what I’ve been told that’s only a theory.
Batman 2 not coming out until 2026 is killin me 😫
It was literally adreline. A actual realistic choice. Matt should understand that more being a health guy lmao
Huh?
I like the idea its Bane's venom
@@joesteel7409There’s nothing wrong with enjoying a rumor, but the people who made the film would disagree with you.
Greig Fraser has been killing it as a Cinematographer, Dune, Batman, Rogue One, Zero Dark Thirty, even a movie like Lion
29:08 I’m still laughing about the sound he makes
LOL idk how I never noticed that before ☠️
@@Anonymous.Throne😂😂😂
Batman cut the THICK electrified cable above him because that was the most practical way to cut it in one swift strike, you can’t do the same if you’re chest is right by the cable, you don’t have a swing from that angle and closeness, it logical. If you start slowly cutting the cable up close you’d get electrified before you cut through it which was his whole point. He also wanted to get down to help the people right after and the fall in and rise from the water was a visual baptism for his transformation from vengeance to hope
Death isn't the only consequence.
People are traumatized by the terror attacks. Half the city is under water. It may never recover.
I love Matt. And I love the fact that people don’t like when he doesn’t agree on the movies everybody likes! He’s very unique.
❤️💪🏽gotta be honest at all times regardless of who’s feelings I hurt.
@ well yeah I’m not familiar with a-lot of things in film yet I’m giving it a chance.
People so picky smh- NOT EVERYONE HAS TO ENJOY THINGS THE WAY YOU ENJOY THEM! That’s why it’s really fun for me to see reactions (especially of Matt), to be exposed to different views and ways of thinking…watching something just to be affirmed all the time is exhausting
lol very unique
I love that Matt actually has some knowledge about what his watching for once😂
"Where are these clubs?" It was the Printworks in London. Incredible venue
Yeah, they shoot Batman movies in London most of the time. Especially the Gotham series, I think shot a lot of it in London or something.
"Nobody died."
Matt, after reacting to the grisly murders of several Gotham public servants.
lol, don't ever change, Matt.
Matt is just taking notes so he has cool one liners to say when he becomes a vigilante.
Im convinced Matte favorite movie is a documentary, no fiction at least
GOD I LOVE HAVING MATT IN VIDEOS!
its really sad Jenna couldnt make it
Good catch, Matt.
Ahhhhhhh ok dope.
My favorite thing about this movie is that it shows how flawed batman is and how he starts to overcome that in order to become the true hero Gotham needs, not a symbol of vengeance but a symbol of hope
10/10, lifelong Batman fan, was excited about Reeves doing it, immediately fell in love.
THIS MOVIE IS ART!

Thank you Holden I’ve been waiting for this one forever 🙏
Holden you have been killing it with your selections! I just signed up for your ARCANE Patreon. Loving ur channel guys
I've said before that this probably the best "Batman" film, but the dark knight is the best actual film, that just so happens to feature Batman.

"why'd she mention the white part?"
matt. this is the reality of our world. especially in america. love you but you should know this.
True, but it was a really cheap way to do it. Felt more like they are trying to get brownie points than actually tackling the systemic racism issue. It was throw in randomly instead of also being a plot of the movie.
@Mr.YasQueen that's why it was so cringe when she said that. Forced woke nonsense.
That saud one of my fav descriptions of just starting Batman is Arkham Origins, and The Batman reminds me of it, so I may be biased
amazing, everything you just said was wrong
The Batmobile in this movie IS based on comics!!! More specifically from comics in the 1970’s and 1980’s
love you both, and I'm a cis white male: it's not weird for a black marginalized daughter of a white (I'm also Italian and sorry, we are white) to use the phrase "white privilege" when discussing her foundational trauma in a movie about systemic blindness. love you

Ehh, it was forced and cringe. Like the girl power scene in Endgame.
so at the Batmobile scene, he didn’t stop, the car did. It’s a very powerful manual car. He stalled it pretty much to make a long story short lol
No he stopped on purpose. He wouldn’t just run over penguin. Selina and Gordon were moments away from getting killed, Batman let everyone escape so he could save them
So glad you guys reviewed it. It’s my favorite movie of all time so even if Matt doesn’t love, I’m just excited to see his reactions at certain parts

Ive waited so long for this!!!
Love seeing matt so much! Whats his documentary on?

Been here since the first reaction of Matt, didn't even notice the YT name changed. Happy for y'all ♥️
"That seems like a good life decision"
Matt killed his whole mood there 💀
Green stuff he injected is "venom" which is a reference to BANE.
Actually the cowl is bulletproof, there are a couple scenes where you can see bullets ricochet off his cowl.
Loved that you love this Matt. Legend
Fun fact about the Batmobile, Batman didn’t hit the gas and then brakes, he actually stalled out the engine.
Matt is the kinda person who enjoys pointing out all the unrealistic stuff in a super hero movie. I get he is your bud, but he is not enjoyable to watch a movie with his commentary.
Then don’t watch this video, it’s all in good fun not real criticism
Omg I've missed Matt so much 😭 happy to see him!!! 💕💕
Was literally looking to see if you did this video yesterday….so bizarre 😂
I think people will be more interested in the video game series y'all are doing after Jen gets better with the controls.
I, personally, had trouble watching the whole series due to how much she struggles with the controls. I think I'd be much more invested if she got used to gaming.
The watch list bit 😂😂😂
As an old guy (56) who loved the early detective comics I feel like THIS one is closer to my view of Batman - which surprised me because “Pattinson?!?” - but I was really impressed with his take on it. Loved the noir of this too (which can be cheesy) and Paul Dano’s take.
The audiobook before released at this time was a great background on Bruce too.
So cool to see Holden and Matt watching films together again.
Its a dynamic you cant replicate ❤
I love how composer, Michael Giacchino used the opening chords of the Nirvana song for the underlying basis of his score. :)
