- A playthrough of Capcom's 1996 license-based platformer/beat 'em up for the SNES, Marvel Super Heroes in War of the Gems.
As the Marvel-flavored follow-up to the 1994 title X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse, Marvel Super Heroes in War of the Gems (is that name long enough?) was Capcom's second versus comic-based fighter-turned-beat 'em up to release on the SNES. Appearing at the end of 1996, it was among the last of the official releases for the system in North America.
Borrowing elements liberally from previous Capcom games, Marvel Super Heroes gives you a choice of five different heroes and four different stages to start. After clearing these, another set of stages appear before the final showdown - does this sound like the Mega Man format to anybody else? Defeating a boss with net you an infinity gem that can be equipped to boost your abilities for the duration of a stage, and health items can be used between stages to restore any previous damage done.
Like X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse, Marvel Super Heroes follows the basic beat 'em up gameplay template a la Final Fight or Streets of Rage while throwing in platforming segments. Unfortunately, the stages tend to come across as completely generic. Unlike in Mutant Apocalypse where the stages were built around specific abilities, Marvel Super Heroes' stages have all been designed to accommodate any choice of character. While in theory that might sound ideal, in practice, it means you do a lot of walking left-to-right, occasionally punching inconveniently placed walls. It's rare that you find an out-of-the-way item or a branching path, whereas they were the norm in Mutant Apocalypse.
The graphics look great - the sprites are all shrunken down versions of characters from the arcade Marvel Super Heroes fighting game. They take up a serious amount of screen real-estate (by SNES standards, at least) and retain some of their moves from the coin-op, which was a neat touch. There aren't many characters in the game, though, with many of the enemies being mere palette swaps of the heroes themselves. I know I was excited the third time I fought the purple-tinted "E. Wolverine!"

No matter how good the graphics look, though, the animation is lacking, and the game play is excruciatingly slow. It's a late-release title, and people expected games that looked at least vaguely 32-bit by the beginning of 1997, but come on, Capcom! You never see more than three bad guys on the screen at once (and two will be of the same enemy!), and even still there's some harsh slowdown that rears its ugly head. It doesn't really ever impede the game play, but the pacing can make the game feel awfully dull at times. And why does the music suck?
The game play is pretty simple - just like in Mutant Apocalypse, you get an attack and a jump button, and the rest of your moves are used via simple fighting game style commands. If you can double-tap forward or do a hadouken, you won't have any difficulty pulling off your super moves.
Marvel Super Heroes in War of the Gems is a game that I really wanted to like. I loved X-Men Mutant Apocalypse, I loved the arcade Marvel Super Heroes, and who didn't want just a bit more love from Capcom before they tapped out on the 16-bit hardware? It's just too bad that it felt like a generic, cheaply made cash-in. It's not broken, nor is it necessarily "bad." But the sheer number of recycled assets, the featureless stage designs, and the sluggish gameplay speed leave this to be something to be admired in screenshots rather than played. No matter how much you love Marvel, this is a sure-fire disappointment.

Marvel vs. Capcom this is not! At least this is among the closest we ever got to Infinity War for SNES.
I really wanted to love Marvel Super Heroes in War of the Gems, but it's pretty clear that Capcom was more interested in a last-minute cash grab on the SNES than in making a good game.
I wanted to also, I loved capcom’s take and art style for marvel comics characters. And these games make me even more sad and disappointed knowing what happens in the future of the relationship between marvel and capcom. Both of those companies could’ve continued making great games together, it is such a shame marvel vs capcom infinite flopped even though it’s still fun to play.

game was fine, solid story, amazing music, great art work and wad smooth, yeah there was some copy and paste but this is definitely a top 5 beat em up on snes for sure
That aquarium level is the most annoying. Only 1 life and you got to get through a long ass level and most of the time the controls really lagged with the input of a special move

Fun fact, this game while primarily tells the story of the Infinity Gauntlet miniseries, also mixes events and characters from Infinity Crusade (hence the evil versions of heroes and the Magus as a mid boss) also is worth mentioning some characters that where in the original story are using different costumes that reflect the time this was released, like Nebula having her more known bald look though in the original comic she had long hair and Dr. Strange having his "Marvel Edge" costume.
Actually the doppelgangers were all from. Infinity War. Infinity Crusade was with the Goddess and split heroes amongst their faiths.
This the one where Wolverine's attacks sound like silenced gunshots.

Got this when it came out. Found the gameplay to be unbalanced. Captain America, Iron Man, and Hulk were slow. Wolverine, while fast, wasn’t the strongest jumper. Meanwhile, Spiderman was all but invincible.
Spidey’s attack animations were extremely fast, enabling him to rapidly overpower NPC’s and destroy barriers. His walking animation gave him a lower hitbox than the other characters. He could also jump higher than everyone else, enabling him to easily evade attacks and pummel enemies from above.
It’s like Capcom made a Spiderman game. Then, at the last minute, threw in the rest of the characters as an afterthought. Not a horrible game, but nowhere near as polished as Mutant Apocalypse.
DetroitAlan01 Definitely. It's not terrible, it's just so much less than it should have been. You're totally right about Spiderman, too. Put the power gem on him and he can destroy anything without a problem. I had to fight the temptation to use only him in this video. MA was a much better game, even if it wasn't quite as impressive in screenshots.
Same!! Spider-man was my character of choice everytime I played due to his speed, moveset and play-style!!!
Not to mention I'm quite partial to Spider-man as my second most favorite comic book hero evaaaaarr!!!

I didn't find those problems with Hulk and Wolverine. I don't think Hulk was slow. And I quite like Wolverine's uppercut. I agree about Captain America and Iron Man. Although they probably had the best range attacks. Especially Captain America.
Iron Man was the worst.
Hulk and Wolverine was the best at defeating Thanos for me.
I think Spider-Man Hulk and Wolverine was the best characters to choose. But Captain America's range attacks was good. But Iron Man was crap.

This game gave me a Hulk fight that the movies didn't.
While I did like and enjoy Marvel Super Heroes in War of the Gems, I felt that Capcom cut a lot corners in comparison to it's "prequel," X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse. I mostly main Wolverine and Spider-Man in the game, with some use of Captain America.

This game had some weird ass physics and funny sounds from time to time. Any character can stand in lava for like a full 1.5 or 2 seconds before they take damage. --and when they take damage from lava or lasers, it's always a hilarious punch sound effect.

I had the poster for this game from Nintendo power as a kid. I always wanted to see what the game was like and honestly I probably would have loved it as a kid as I was really in to comics and Nintendo.

Adam Warlock’s minor appearances in this game are a better representation of the character than the one seen in Guardians of the galaxy 3.

Although War of the Gems is based on a similar storyline as the Capcom arcade game Marvel Super Heroes, and each of the playable characters retains one of the special moves they had in that game, it is not a port; War of the Gems instead features gameplay similar to Final Fight and X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse. So far War of the Gems looks and plays like a 1993 game trying to squeak by in 1996. This game was released late in the Super NES' lifespan, after the Nintendo 64 was released. In 2020, the game was rereleased as part of a home arcade cabinet from Arcade1Up alongside X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes.
I don't know why this and mutant apocalypse aren't included in the Marvel fighting collection I mean the Punisher is so they might as well include these 2 games too

Mostly all you're doing is beating up evil doppelgangers of the Marvel heroes. What a shame I'd that the developers could have just used those characters as their real-selves to aid our heroes through the levels.

Yes, the gameplay and animation does seem to be a bit sluggish. But I would choose this over some of Capcom's worse beat 'em ups like Sunset Riders or Cadilliacs & Dinosaurs.
Sunset Riders was a Shoot-em-Up by Konami, not a Beat-em-Up by Capcom.

This game had the lamest boss battles: "evil" versions of Iron Man, Hulk and Wolverine? Come on!
Not to mention all the "evil" Pucks, Daredevils and other characters throughout the game.
You do know that Destro (not the G.I. Joe Cobra henchman, but the magenta-skinned alien bruiser) & "Mad Titan" Thanos are the true penultimate boss & final boss of the game, right? Even Dr. [Victor von] Doom -- who's predominately a Fantastic Four villain (coincidentally, quite a few evil versions of Ben Grimm's The Thing show up in the game alongside the multiple evil versions of other heroes Daredevil, Vision, Hawkeye, and She Hulk, never mind the evil lookalike doppelgangers of the main four heroes [Spiderman, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, and Wolverine] and the already established villainous bigfoot known as Sasquatch serving also as a mindless minion to defeat) -- acts as a sub-boss for the most part.

Thanos either calls pillars of fire, the walls, or he swats at you. Thanos actually blocks a lot of attacks, but the person playing just knows all of the right timing to get past it.

They have released this game after Final Fight 3 and even Resident Evil and yet it still has completely mediocre animation as well as obviously low budget, even thought judging by SNES best selling games list it was still possible to sold at least 1 million copies on that platform without Nintendo's support in 1996. I share your opinion, aside from the praise of the graphics, because IMO earlier X-Men 2 Clone Wars still looks way better. It not a bad game, but yeah - a monster like Capcom could had did a better job here. Also, what a garbage water level, ugh.

To be fair I do think some of the tracks could have been good just with a better instrumentation/sampling. A different yet similar problem to, say, Mega Man II on the GB.
