It is a shame that characters like Warlock, and a lot of legacy characters at DC, go unused and just exist in a state of uncertainty in those universes for long stretches of time
But isn't that the beauty of the medium? These continuities where characters can exist in the background until the next creator comes along and adds the next step of the ladder onto their stories? Warlock will never really be gone, and his fans need only wait until the guardian of the soul stone comes roaring back into the spotlight. It'll be something to see at the very least.
@@samwill7259 Yeah, months before the GOTG Vol. 3 movie gets released Adam will become relevant in the comics again.
That was kind of a bummer description of the Infinity Gauntlet. I think there's a real story in that book about the clashing worldviews of Warlock, Silver Surfer and Thanos.
This was a beautiful and complete history of Adam Warlock. At the time I found out about this character I had just about given up reading comic books but he was so unique that he brought me back in to reading comic books and beyond such as heavy-metal magazine and underground comics that steer away from the usual superhero adventures. Jim Starlin is always amazing on Adam Warlock. His storytelling and layouts always pull you in to want to see and read more. I hope that this hero continues to be a major part of the Marvel universe.
htey cast a brilliantt actor to play him. james gunn is insane enough to bring us a fully realized warlock, even if they vary from any of the comics storylines.

I was a huge fan of the initial Starlin run. The idea of him as a brooding anti-hero who murdered so many and saved so much reminds me of another popular character of the time. Michael Moorcock’s Elric. It wouldn’t surprise me if Starlin read those books as well.
Starlin’s original run on Warlock always put me in mind of Michael Moorcock’s Eternal Champion stories.
Always loved Warlock, the FF story is one of my faves. Thankfully, I still have all the Starlin comics which completely blew me away in the 70's.
I wonder if Vision was used as something of a Warlock stand in for the MCU's Infinity Saga. I know we're still waiting on Adam to get his proper MCU introduction after the stinger from GotG 2 but having the soul stone inset in his forehead and the small connection with thanos that give him, it gives me shades of our gold plates messiah.

Great vid! Adam Warlock is one of my favorite characters. I find fascinating that construction and descontruction have become a somewhat intrinsic to his character. I really think his character needs to be carefully writen when in a panel.

Adam Warlock is a very intriguing character to me. I wonder if anyone on the Independent Comic scene has tried to creat a character and a narrative similar to what Warlock had started.
I'd be interested to read that. Offhand, I can't think of anything similar.

Godland by Joe Casey and Tom Scioli has a very Starlin Warlock feeling to it.
@@StrangeBrainParts Well I think the case could be made that Matt Wagner did that with Grendel. From a story of a criminal to something vastly more with stories about faith and politics. Wagner's Mage is also a truly epic tale with the evolution of a character with an interesting storyline and ideas explored.
One interesting fact about Adam Warlock’s story in Strange Tales is that it features the first appearance of Gamora

What do you think of the Sentry? He's a rather unique concept for his time and another example of wasted potential tossed around to writers using him only as a plot device. I would love to see you cover his origin, the hoax behind it, and his rise and fall from popularity going from his first two volumes exploring his inner psyche to just being Mr. Plotdevice, purposelessly serving whoever shows up next to be the big bad.

Truly a one of the greatest origins of any character. Truly outstanding review 😝 I hope you will address the issue of the predator series moving over to marvel. This is very disturbing to the force because of the way dark horse is seemingly having to give up all it's in-house gems. Essentially leaving nothing but grendel, concrete and crap. I'm really worried because forever dark horse has essentially published things that the big houses would have nothing to do with. And now it would be as thou all the great ideas would be brushed aside, just like with star wars, and things like predator 2 and avp will be mashed together by the insane Disney corp. And will lead to an apocalyptic, world ending nightmare.😝
Nice deep dive on my favorite hero. Crazy how so many of the major creators in comics had a hand in his creation and stories. I like that he's a little lesser known except for those that are fans as Starlin especially has more freedom with him.
INFINITY WAR was one of my first big crossover events as a new fan. Reading it as an adult, it sure looks great (props to Ron Lim) but it reads so...hollow. There's a strange running gag that stood out to me that finds several characters staring at viewscreens or into space and rattling off strings of techno-babble followed by "GOOD LORD!" (Seriously, this happens like once an issue). It's evident that Jim Starlin had said pretty much all he wanted to say with GAUNTLET, and might've even preferred to leave it at that if there weren't such a need to feed that summer crossover beast for the next few years.

I`ve followed the saga of Warlock since I was 10 years old. I`m turning 65 this year & the character remains of My favorite comics creations. In fact, I just purchased the Gallery edition of Starlin`s run to re-read. Beautiful book. Maybe we`ll get the earlier stories as well since the character will make a live action appearance in the next Guardian`s film. I loved this video history & look forward to more. Thanks so much for doing this.

Good video, but you got one thing wrong. Warlock was the champion of life, as directed by Chaos and Order. Thanos was the champion of Death, not Chaos.
I think my uncle was in a Marlene Dietrich film, now I have visions of Adam being played by him. I have the Warlock by Starlin collection on the side to read, so that's going to be interesting.
That was a good video. However not to be too picky but the forces of Chaos and Order chose Warlock as their champion who would represent the forces of Life to Thanos being the champion of Death. To me this was a very interesting distinction since Chaos is often associated with Death but in this instance is merely another aspect of Life / existence. To the 12 year old kid that I was reading this it was a profound detail.

I very much enjoyed the Adam Warlock and Thanos of the 90s.
Seeing both have introspective moments and sharing their unique cosmic experiences was actually really cool.
Thus I enjoyed the 90s Infinity arcs and actually really enjoyed the Warlock Chronicles. Very trippy.
Didn't care much for the Annihilation Wave era stuff with Warlock and fell off after that.
Side not: have not enjoyed the latest Thanos stuff where they essentially reverse the introspective growth of Thanos to just being kiddie pool nihilism evil.
My first introduction to the character was the recent Guardians of the Galaxy game, which appears to have adapted the Universal Church story from the comics. Quite liked the character in that, and am intrigued to see what James Gunn will do with him - sorry, Him - for his third Guardians flick. Especially post Infinity War

What is with the early Marvel bullpen and objectivism? Ditko, Lee and Kirby were all familiar with it. What was the appeal?
Hmm, I wonder if it was objectivism that pushed Stan and jack apart. The focus on individualism over collectivism and an unwillingness to compromise on one's own artistic vision that characterizes objectivist thought would go a long way towards explaining why the Marvel method no longer worked for Kirby.
I understand the unwillingness to compromise one's artistic vision bit - but I trust Kirby didn't buy into the rest of it.
Objectivism was quite popular in the late 50's and 60's. Especially in the New York area, where I believe Ayn Rand was based (not positive about that last point). It's really not too surprising that it permeates a lot of popular culture from that time.
It definitely wasn't a philosophy that pushed Stan and Jack apart. In nutshell, Jack wasn't getting his due respect, credit or reward, while Stan was giving speeches, getting accolades and doing financially well. One will never know how hard Stan tried to get Jack what he deserved. But the publisher (Martin Goodman) would have none of it. That's a very, very short version of my understanding.

This is an unpopular opinion, but I don't think Kirby was treated unfairly. As I understand it he rejected Lee's offer of a staff position and as a freelancer he was paid fairly well. He didn't get the copyright to any of his creations, but neither did Lee. That's the way the business worked back then. I don't know, I've always felt the Lee/Kirby feud among fans was overblown.

Don't forget Adam Warlock along with Loki, and Thor papered in the Malibu Comics universe. it isa shame marvel never utilized some of the excellent characters when that bought out Malibu. Starlin's Warlock run in strange tales was the best version of Adam Warlock and the coloring was far superior to the comics of the day and especially to the washed out monochromes use today.
I did sidestep the whole Malibu/Rune taking all the Infinity Stones portion. It's a convoluted mess and, I admit, I wanted to save it for another video. It was too hard to summarize in a reasonable amount of time and was a bit off topic.
100% agree. Starlin's Strange Tales were a high point. 1,000 Clowns is a classic.
@@StrangeBrainParts I understand you reasons and agree it was a messy situation with Marvel buying Malibu just for its printing presses. It was jarring to see Thor and Adam show up in the Malibu Universe.Rune along with Pumpkin Head were great characters as well as Hardcore.
It is a shame Marvel never used the characters.
The prevailing rumour is that Marvel bought it for their computer colouring division. However, from what I've read, it's very likely Marvel bought Malibu just so DC couldn't.
I loved the reprints of strange tales. 1000 clowns pretty much is exactly where I stole the ideas and quotes I started my social media presence with in 2014. That and the famed quote by Mythbuster Adam Savage, "I reject your reality and substitute my own. My views shaped by reading those books in my mid teens. Fast forward 30 years and some psychological asessments and I know why I see the people in charge as clowns, hate authouritu, refuse to fit in and long ago 30 years back decided to " Embrace my own inner madness monster and walk through the doorway to insanity. If the world is "Sane" I was most definitely NOT. Nor did I wish to be.
Upshot being I now know I am INFJ miggs breyer personality and borderline for Aperrger's which somewhat contradicts but mainly reinforce eachother. No wonder this square peg never fit in the round hole society would try to have me fit. All my life I have been the outsider. Perhaps a bit of a hermit. Benefit being I no longer care about trying to fit in. I am me. I am kind. I am smart. That is good. I have my ethical framework on life sorted and just try to get by as best I can. Completely unrelated... But how about the video about the old Gold Key Comics characters (Solar, Magnus, Turak, etc.) history and moves to Valiant, then Dark Horse, and then Dynamite. Are they all the same story, did they get rebooted into new universes, any behind the scenes stories, or bitter creator comments ... ?

What if... Adam Warlocks soul gem was... made originally at the big bang from... his own soul in the previous universe? This is why he was so proficient with the gem and why it granted him such Magickal power; the previous gem was the complete boiling down of his Oversoul into a gigantic planet sized GREEN Oval geosynchronously locked emerald soulgem at the end of the universe. it survived the big crunch/bang but needs a host due to its multi-versal quantum reality signature being out of synch with our reality. It is able to siphon soul force from a host to sustain itself.
Interesting! I knew nothing beyond the Starlin 70s. I certainly did not know about his (however slight) congruence with “Objectivism.”

I had to do a lot of digging to find out why the first appearance was a tad lacklustre and discovered the Objectivism angle Kirby intended to explore. I genuinely do not know how many times I've mentioned Objectivism in prior videos, but it seems like a topic that comes up a lot.

I don't know why but I always thought Warlock - or rather 'Him' - was created by AIM. Perhaps 'She' was created by AIM and that led me to believe 'Him' was created by AIM too..?
I do remember I liked Infinity Gauntlet when first released though in hindsight yeah it was pretty obvious there was nothing at stake there... the huge number of characters involved was quite cool for teenage me admittedly.
The other ones on the other hand were clear cash-grab and I didn't even know there were more Infinity stories after Infinity War and Infinity Crusade.

Last I saw HER took the name Kismet and was seen in the Qusar books in the 90s. No idea what became of that character afterwords.
if his life is looped maybe warlock is far stronger than one thinks (a god or entity) and thanos is an extension of adam warlock - that would be crazy - or warlock is below a god and thanos below him.....

Adam Warlock's origin is yet another example of Stan Lee stepping in and saving Kirby from a truly stupid story . Objectivism is a nasty , petty and vicious cult that had then and hopefully still has no place in Marvel Comics unless the characters committed to it are obviously evil .
