Using refined, I was able to boot into multiboot linux grub and install manjaro. Went full blown and erased sierra for manjaro 20 xfce. All thanks to your video!!!!

Tera Fun Wohoo! Thanks! I also think that for older Macs this method allows to give a second life to those devices
P.S: If you are interested in installing the latest version of Mac OS (Catalina) on your 2009 imac check out the "dosdude" patch. This one allows to easily patch OS for older devices.
But hey - Linux is great too ;)

0:15 - Discussing the boot options
1:57 - Where to get the rEFInd binary from
3:15 - Loading the Mac with a rEFInd flash drive
4:17 - Actions to install the boot loader
6:40 - Configuring the boot loader menu
    11:15 - Conclusions
Note: On rEFInd boot menu instead of rebooting you could also press the Esc key to reload the menu options. Easy and no need to reboot in that case!
Note #2: You don't necessarily need a flash drive! In my case I've used it because my system hard drive is encrypted. If your drive is not encrypted you can just browse it in the file system itself

I installed catalina on an imac 2007 with the dosdude patch, next to the old el capitan installation on the same dirve. rEFInd only lists the El Capitan installation for some reason, but lets me boot into Catalina by using the fallback bootloader. Can I somehow add it? I'd like to try to install Windows and linux beside it but want to fix this first to make sure I can still boot into Catalina still.

i am using catalina, linux mint, windows 10 on macbook. between linux mint & windows 10, the grub 2 bootloader does not work or popup....the developers say, it is hidden... how to make it unhidden and functional.....Or,
if I install rEFInd, will this solve the problem? ..... if yes, then on which OS must I install rEFInd to function triple boot OS properly...

Hello Dimitry, very good your video, I wanted to ask you, it turns out that I made a disk partition on my macbook, and through duaboot with rEFIt, I could use osX and elementary (linux), it turns out that at the beginning when I started to boot , I saw both partitions, mac and elementary, now there is little reason it only shows elementary and I cannot enter the apple operating system, do you know how I can access, remove rEFIt from linux or find the osx partition again ???? ?? Thanks a lot!!!

    • @NomadicDmitry
      @NomadicDmitry  4 года назад +1

Hey Walter! So, it boots straight into the Linux, right? Here are the things that you should try:
      1) Boot into the recovery mode and repeat the installation of rEFInd. This will bring back the rEFInd menu so you could boot any OS that you like.
      2) If after booting into Mac you want to remove the rEFInd then you can go to System Preferences -> Startup Disk and select your Mac disk. Later you can mount the EFI folder and remove rEFInd from the disk. However, how are you going to boot into Linux then?
      3) ALSO you can try antiX Bootable Linux distro. I am discussing it here: ruclips.net/video/C1b1aJh_LSQ/видео.html It allows to easily detect any bootloaders and boot a necessary OS. If you cannot boot your Mac or Linux later on - try that.
I hope I understood your problem correctly. My suggestion for the future is to install Linux on a separate (USB) drive. This way you can use it without re-partitioning the drive and the fear of corrupting something.

Also after I install it in recovery mode and restart it just keeps going back into recovery mode, I have to select the startup disk manually to get back into OS X. I just have linux on a usb I want to run but need rEFInd because I use a RX 580 in my mac pro so I don't have a boot screen. Thanks

I can not get windows to boot off of the windows options loader, only the efi loader and when I install windows the boot camp does not install properly and the sound module does not work, so I went to parallels mac. I have triple booted in the past with older versions of mac. I am using a 2012 MBP with two SSD and can dedicate mac and LM 19.3 dual boot but I wish to triple boot with Windows 10 and not use parallels.

    • @NomadicDmitry

Could you explain the problem a bit more descriptive. After installing the bootloader and reboot there is nothing except logo?
      1) What is the computer that you use?
      2) What OS is installed on it?

      1. late 2014 mac mini
      2. i currently have macos cataliina, windows 10 (debloated version, if that matters) and finally, kde manjaro.
      3. i wanted to triple boot with ease. also, the only way for me to get in is to hold on to opotion so that all 3 OS disc shows up so i can choose. i had also installed these other OS without depending on boootcamp. i only used bootcamp to install drivers from windows 10.

I have a feeling that it doesn't play well with older hardware (probably the hardware before 2012-2013).
I have a feeling that instead of rEFInd you could try rEFIt (refit.sourceforge.net/). This was a bootloader that rEFInd is based on.
Backup your data before doing so, though. Please let me know if that works.
