This was excellent. Thanks SO much.
Just retired, had the time to go back to my longtime pal, my T42, and replace the fan (again) (Gee, the back has a shitload of screws to remove, but the actual fan R & R is easy.) Thing's bomb-proof from the outside. Your video was the first one I found about what to do next with it. It's maxed at 2G RAM, has a 220G HD, and the ancient comm stack for wifi connectivity, which I knew and have forgotten, so for now, there's 30 ft of RJ-45 down the hall to the network switch.
Thanks for the 'warning' about Linux, which I'm using on a Raspberry, as well as the tips on drivers. I have an exFat 1TB drive from Sandisk, which may not have a driver for XP anywhere.
Last, I am a red dot junkie, starting with my first Tpad, a 355 w/ a 9.5" gray-scale screen, before scratch pads existed. These dots made mice superfluous, are incredibly adjustable and include scrolling (press the blue bar between the two red bars, then push the red dot. Presto! It scrolls the page up/down.
PS: Real IBM Thinkpad keyboards: The ONLY ones I've never killed with my hammer-like typing.

Good ideas, sorry so long, I go carried away. A good place to go to get the updates for Windows XP is ERPMAN's pages. Windows XP can be used very easily with 1.5 GB of RAM, in our business around 2009, they were actually so cheap they were running Windows XP on 128 MB, then the economy got slow so I would salvage another 128 MB from other machines, the 256 MB was a noticeable improvement. Windows XP when updated works pretty well, and if one goes through the steps, (SP3, Installer 4.5, IE8 components, needed for updates), there will be lots of updates to install. What people fail to realize is that Microsoft actually has supported XP, even recently, and one will find around 150 updates. There is also a free Anti-Virus called, Panda Dome, (focus on the word Free Anti-Virus). This is an older machine than any laptop I still have, I do have a Sony Vaio Desktop, Pentium II, upgraded to 190 MB RAM, upgraded to a whole 4 GB Hard Drive, (LOL), it still runs 98SE. If I had that laptop I would use it exactly as you are using it Nomadic! MyPal is supposed to be the best Browser, I use SeaMonkey, Firefox, and Opera versions for XP, all are pretty good. The version of Linux I would try to put on would be ZorinOS Lite, Dual Boot with Windows XP. All my older Windows programs can run on this Laptop! This laptop is more than able to use meet the Minimum Requirements of either...and IBM, real IBM, (not Lenovo), Laptops always last...if one updates the CMOS battery! One can actually do many things with a laptop like this! With Windows XP a person can actually run Office 2007, min requirements 500 MHz, 256 MB, 1.5 GB Hard Drive Space.

I used these at work and serviced quite a number of them back in the day. Recently, I found one in the trash bin with the screen literally ripped off of it. To my surprise the original ide hdd was still in the bay, despite the bay cover also being ripped off and after hooking the laptop up to an external monitor, it actually boots up. @@NomadicDmitry Webpositive is based on webkit, it's not finished yet since the whole OS is still in beta.
Haiku currently lacks 3D acceleration and if I remember correctly it's not even planned for the stable release since BeOS didn't have Hardware acceleration either (with very few exceptions.) They will add it later when they have time.
It's a tiny team that performs miracles with small resources, just look at the donations. If more people donated money Haiku would have had a stable release years ago, I'm sure of it. They are making great progress all the time though and now they have started working on the ARM port also. I think that beta 3 will come next year already. Beta 4 will be the last one hopefully and then Haiku R1 hopefully before end of 2023, so I use it as my main OS finally.

i think the os the computer came with is always the appropriate os for it, i would never choose linux because it just cuts away all the features that work with software wich only works on windows. example to understand better: with linux you turn a full optional car to almost base model

@@NomadicDmitry yes and no depends because for xp there is a browser named mypal made on purpose always up to date and super light on ram, it can run browse the web fine on 700mb ram and supports all modern web security and design standards and its in active development and improving.

also there is a quite big community wich provides all sort of tech support for xp,
xp its "officially" dead but unofficially not dead basically
of course major software wont work at the last version but like example office yr fine with 2003 with the converter you can open modern office files, you can run almost the latelest software anyways

On my T430, T420s, x200s and R61 (and similar) literally all the original features and function keys ect do exactly as they are supposed too with Linux Mint, unlike with win 10 where almost nothing works.
I could put the original os back on but that would mean working with an unsupported os that supports less and less each day and is famously virus prone.
The old os's are still pretty cool though and I'll still put them back on to toy around with or even use (not as a daily driver though)
