How To Add an LED Light In Your Shower
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 18 май 2018
- Let's face it builder showers are unreasonably short and dark. But it doesn't have to be that way. Those bulkheads you see are usually pointless and only designed to reduce tiling for the builder. In this video I'm showing you how to raise the height and add a little sparkle with a slimeline LED light. Please not you may require an electrician to wire your light so check with your local building office.

This guy don’t even know it...but he’s remodeled half my house. My personal DIY coach
LOL, glad to help Pierce. Send us some pics for the Instagram page so we can show folks and help inspire!
For a bathroom remodel is it best to shut off the water valve and power to the bathroom??
Awesome quick vid! Thank you!
The mantra of not increasing the scope of work for no reason is something I need to adapt lol.
Thanks Jeff 😎
Great video! The low ceiling is in a fourth of the master bath. I always figured that this was unnecessary. I will discuss increasing the height with my contractor when I am ready for this project!
This presentation really helped. I was wondering about light installation and electrical connection. This video gave me several answers. Connecting to the bathroom fan simplifies electrical hookup, and using LED solves lots of light fixture problems. Thanks for all the answers!
I really love your videos. Gives homeowners confidence when tackling these projects on their own. One question I have is how to tile around a window in a tub/shower?
Very carefully! if it is a vinyl window then treat it like a niche and wrap the sill in waterproof membrane like kerdi from schluter.
Great idea Jeff and another good and funny video, showing how housework doesn't have to be all seriously horrible work, without having a good time in the process. You have a great sense of humor, Let is shine brother, you make me laugh every time I watch you work and listen to your funny comments....thanks, Mike...
Exactly what I needed. Thank you sir for the info.
Another really amazing and very helpful tip. Could you show us a video of how the wiring got connected to the fan circuit and the switch? Thanks!
Love all your videos. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and experience so generously! Jeff, quick question: What are your thoughts on asbestos-containing dry walls and the way to approach them (aside from the obvious face mask)?
Great job as usual. I prefer a separate control for the fan(code permitting) so that if I am cleaning, tiling or doing small/routine plumbing work/maintenance I don't have to listen to an annoying fan motor noise(even a low db one). Cheers from Ottawa.
Love you videos though!! Learning so much, great explanations and camera angles to really show how to do it
Thanks Nick, Cheers!
Dude, you are a natural teacher!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Perfect freehand cutting!! Haha great job. always watching when i have some free time. Thanks for all the tips.
Thanks Nel, great to hear from you again. Cheers!
Great video! I'm currently about to do the same thing, but Why not completely remove the bulk and have a level ceiling with the rest of the bath?
Dobra robota. Świetne są pana filmy.
I love how you always wear glasses and gloves!
Best guy ever, These videos make me want to be a better person
No pressure!
Love your videos bro..Happy long weekend!

I love this guy so much
some safety glasses my friend!, love your videos!
@homerenovisiondiy
I found you a few weeks ago and I'm LOVING your info and videos! So clear and easy! Obvious, as I joined! 💕
I'm doing a second floor bathroom reno and the floor is rotten. I know the toilet and tub have leaked and that's the majority of the issue, but I also have my downstairs shower directly below the area that is moldy and rotten.. and the ceiling in the downstairs shower only has cedar tongue and groove (no drywall or waterproof system). Would this matter or be contributing to the moisture and should I pull the ceiling out downstairs and use the blue drywall before putting the cedar back up? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Cheers!
Brother, you make it look so easy that even a nit like me could do it. But, obviously you're a professional. Excellent job.
I have been at it for quite some time, and yes anyone can do it, I can help!
Quicklt going to watch this before sleeping ! After all itd 3 AM over here
You are a real trooper. Thanks for the effort.Cheers!
Home RenoVision DIY Awesome video I did this exact thing and wired it up! It works with a slight problem the led light flickers for a good little while when you turn it on. I assume it’s because it’s connected to the fan and getting unstable power! Can’t find any info on how to solve this. Any ideas?
In quebec the fan has to be on its on switch not the same as the light but thats is a smart way to not forget to open it
This channel is awesome! THansk!
CANT WAIT FOR PART 2
Lots more coming!
You are AMAZING
I’ve seen two of your installations videos on installing this style light but still don’t know what it looks like when it’s on , lol
Hi Jeff.
Does the light have to be wet rated? With it being in the ceiling, I would think a damp rated slimline recessed LED would be fine.
Thanks for the video!
"Wow he's so good at that! That was amazing dude." My Significant Other responding to you cutting that hole with a jab saw.
This guy is funny. Makes me laugh.
Always awesome videos.
Hey Rocky, thanks for commenting. Cheers!
Your videos are amazing
Do you have a video on installing a new garage door opener?
Nice. Did you raise that existing ceiling to get a good match to the tile (eg. no 1/2 cut tiles) or was it to accommodate the LED light? Just wondering why it was not just removed altogether.
Thanks for the vid, good tips in there.
- Eddy
the light could be installed directly into an insulated ceiling. The height was adjusted to get a larger ceiling for the shower head sake and also not all the way since the old tape joint in the ceiling is difficult to joint and would cause extra scope of work that wasn't needed to get the height I needed.
Great video. Just curious as to why you didn't remove the entire bulkhead? I have one in my small ensuite and want to remove the entire bulkhead and go to the ceiling. Is this recommended?
I've noticed that you use the DeWalt impact driver a lot. I am about to become a home owner, and I've been looking into purchasing one, what model do you use and would you recommend it?
Can you recommend a few favs for lighting brands? Looking for lighting and not sure which to go with. Canadian fan here. Thanks!
Do you waterproof the drywall ceiling? If so can you paint it after?
Hole in box?! Oo Brilliantly!
Cheers!
Thats some good freehand cutting..gotta call u cool hand luke..the steadiest hand in the reno world..lol..
LOL, kind of a fan of renoninja. Cheers!
Home RenoVision DIY all u need is a mask and magic smoke..lol
What I need is another $00,00 subs just like you but that is impossible....you are 1 of a kind. Cheers!
Home RenoVision DIY lol..i wish bro
Man if I had you in my area you would be the 1# man for me to get my bathroom remodeled
Thank you, such a kind thing to say.
For a bathroom remodel is it best to shut off the water valve and power to the bathroom??
Better than My Old House video!!!
Hi. Do you know why my can light is hardwired and undetachable from the aluminum housing that sits above the ceiling?
Hey great video, I'm going to pull my tub and convert to a shower. It will be my first tub to shower conversion. What water proving did you use on this and any tips for a first timer. We are planning on a large wall tile (12x24)
I suggest this waterproofer and use ultracolor grout. It has a sealer in it.
I understanding the fan/light combo for the ventilation during showers however, it's also a dimmable light and perhaps, for various reasons, one may not want the light on in the shower; which would also mean no fan. Would you consider adding a retro box to your existing vanity light/fan and add a throw dimmer to the shower light vice adding directly it to the fan? Great videos, please keep 'em coming!
feel free to spend as much time in the attic running wire as you want. If you feed that wire back to the main box them yes you could add a separate switch.
Wow. this video is great. I do have a question about the amaxlite. Can I hook up multiple amaxlites to one another as I would normally do if it were a standard can light?
up to 12. Cheers!
Can someone please tell me what name brand that tape measure is and where i can order one? Thanks
I bet he just did all the electrical himself lol smart guy though covering himself.
I think he is trying to keep DIY'ers safe, by not overreaching their skill set.

What is the song called?
Are those slim low profile lights safe to use in cellings packed with insulation?
Like will the overheat or do i stick with airtight can housings
Can you do a video on removing textured ceilings and painting ceilings?
Yes we will at some point this summer. Cheers!
I am from Toronto, for any spot light that I add to my home do I need the electrician to make the wire install?
Thank you.
I can’t believe how many areas allow the use of Romex for electrical. Here in northern IL we are required to use conduit or BX (whip cable) to put wiring into! Not sure I would be comfortable with overheated/melted electrical wires resting on wood!
Is there any risk of moisture getting between the fixture and the sheetrock with these kind of lights? Eventually ruining the sheetrock. Thx in advance
@3:00 Only a couple bucks for a 2x4. How things have changed.
How to prevent steam to go up on the wrong side?
Was wondering if you can do a video on recessed lighting in a basement.
we are actually doing a complete rewire in a couple weeks. The finished trim will be coming out soon after. Cheers!
hope I don't forget to ask you when you are live today who can I hire to vent my shower vent to the roof...too high for me!!
whats that stiletto tool called your using?? I want one!
I know this is 2 years old at this point but I just bought a new house and plan on doing some similar work in our bathroom. Was there any reason you didn't just completely remove the bulkhead instead of raising it?
*What about junction box to hold the wires?*
that comes with the light fixture.
Great Video as usual Sir! Has your young helper (your son) left for school.
No Just not working in the shower that day. He was in the kitchen.
Not sure Jeff but did you put a link in here somewhere for that light you installed? I'd like to check it out.
Any recommendations on bathroom fans as well?
any slim line led will be great in a shower as long as it has a gasket to seal to the ceiling. Cheers!
So is there a DIY on wiring the LED Light to the Shower Vent Fan?
Nice
How lucky is this guy not having dust fall on him for removing that ceiling drywall.
It's not luck 😉
I have a supply vent in my bulkhead. What should I do with the vent? Let it come out of ceiling?
Do you have video on sealing and tiling showers and why did you use reg board on wall and just blue board on ceiling?
yes we do. Cheers! just showing options, no such thing as best practice for a shower.
Ur dowing good job is all ways
I checked you Amazon link but this light wasn't there. Who makes this light and where can I buy it.
So how tall was that copper for that shower placed? Is there a rule for this like 12” above the standard height etc? Tia
no rule, place it as you like!
Excelente vídeos...
thanks Cheers!

I am a man in my 40s.. and here is a little story.
My friend works in construction. He basically can do all these works... but i cant.
One day, he called me because he needed help writing a 10 pages essay on driving and alcohol (he got caught with DUI.. ). He was very discouraged as it took him 2 days doing 2 pages.
I got to his place.. i started to read up and type in Word .. he had to go for the whole afternoon for his business. He came back and i was dowstairs watching TV.
"Oh you got tired of it huh ? Cant blame you.. this is a killer.. well, thanks anyway for trying. Did you at least do 1 page ?"... i said "nope. I did 7 more pages and if you count the ones you did and the cover you will get 10 in total".
This was a piece of cake. I was actually done in 3 hours. Felt like a university beginner test.
He was speechless.. he wanted to thank me. I was trying to renovate my kitchen. Trying to install the ceramic floors and new cabinets.
He did the whole work in one afternoon.. (i helped a little but still).
And i was speechless.. as it would of taken me a whole week.
Morale of the story is..
Each of us has particular skills and we envy people who have tremendous skills where we suck lol
P.s
I am french canadian, and i love your work !
Subscribed !!
I am going to do this with my bath but want to install an overhead rain shower head. Can I use the same 6 inch space?
definitely!
Hi... james from Portugal... are you painting the dry wall ou undercouting it first ? Thank you
prime and then paint. Cheers to Portugal! My daughter visited there not too long ago. She can't stop talking about how awesome your country is! I will have to visit there some day soon.
Home RenoVision DIY is ok if i apply that pink membrane and then do all paint work?
Thank you for another great video! I’m remodeling our master bath and planning to add a light to the new shower. Is there anything specific I need to do if there is no drop ceiling? I’m planning on having an electrician wire it up but wanted to make sure I can use the existing drywall or if I need to replace it with mold resistant dry wall or use a roll on waterproof membrane? Thanks
If you have a decent fan, then all you need is a good bathroom paint on the ceiling. Cheers!
what is that tool called that you hammer intothe nails to pull them out?
stiletto
Does the light require any sealant between the drywall and edge of the light?
great question. In most cases pot lights comes with a gasket to seal up that work.
Do I have to silicone the rim of the light fixture for the shower light?
only if the light does not come with a gasket to seal the fixture to the ceiling.
Have you worked on a mobile home doing renovation and could you do a video please
Not Yet, but we plan on buying one to remodel for next year. Cheers! a lot of the basic principles for houses apply!
Are you going to have a video with the final results? Jw.
Always!
SAFETY (glasses) is NOT your number one priority haha I loved the video though :)
I have always seen my job as providing food for my kids. If anything gets in my way of doing that I remove it from my path.
Can you do this if above you is the second floor of home?
You certainly can. Cheers!
Since I have been showing my customers the electric timers for the fans. That has made an extra income. Everybody wants one. Just explain the reasons why they should have one and its a done deal.
Why do they build the ceilings down to start with and why move it up and not just take it out ?
How do I install LED ceiling lights throughout my house?
one at a time!
Now that’s a perfect free hand cutting ...
it is easy if you cut while pushing only. don't cut on the downward
Is it me or does he sound like kermit
Love your knowledge and tutorial towards the renovation industry. Have no problem and nothing to say for you to change anything. I believe maybe you should consider cutting the length of the video a bit shorter. Over all it’s a great channel. Keep it up!
you can always run at 1.5 speed. I sound a little helium but it saves time.
What state do you service in? I like to do some things my self but to afraid to do something wrong and then be screwed. I like to learn and work. My wife like to know if you are anywhere near Pennsylvania?
Ottawa Ontario!
