I’m a single girl and no one ever talked with me about “handy” things growing up. When I became a homeowner I was so overwhelmed with all of the work needed to be done, with absolutely no idea how to do any of it. Thank you so, so much for these videos. Absolutley! As a homeowner you have to learn some maintenance or you will spend a lot of money paying someone else to do things that are not difficult to learn.
And when that leak comes in the middle of the night or on a weekend you know how to fix it.
I have thought about giving tools, ladders, wheelbarrows as wedding gifts.
My wife has a niece whose future hubby has asked for a chainsaw. I thought that was a bit much. I told her we should send a toy one to him but my wife says no :(.

I already commented a question but I just wanted to take the time to say how much I appreciate both your artisan/craftmanship approach and your teaching skills. You are such a find for me, I am old and do all my own work for the most part, as my frequent complaint with handy men is they leave things scratched, unsymmetrical and just ok. Better done than not, but my artists heart grieves for the meticulous approach that you bring. The art of paying attention has been replaced by good enough in many cases. I love how you bridge the two and I thank you for your precise comments and attention to detail and aesthetics.

The killz spray over silicone for painting is an amazing tip. I think it will probably get mostly overlooked because it was said dry quickly in passing during this video. But people are always wondering how to paint over silicon and it’s way quicker than putting a paintable caulk over it.

Nice to watch a video that is well presented by an experienced pro. I’ve been involved in renovating older homes for more years than I care to remember. I chuckle when I think about DIY’ers out there smearing silicone caulking all over themselves and their tubs as they try to learn the “touch.”

Great advise on the finished bead; I did the same thing you did using one finger to make a clean finish. I found my finger getting real sticky fast and stayed that way for a while afterwards. Then I had an idea and just finished my bathroom caulking wearing those disposable nitrile examination gloves and worked perfectly! No more Sticky Fingers (Sorry Rolling Stones, not about your album) & the gloves always wiped off cleanly. I was so proud of the finished job!

Hello, Thanks for the great VIDS! Regarding the tub to tile siliconing. Our new to us house had the old silicone around the tub and it was disgusting, I cut it all out, cleaned it thoroughly, the gap between the tile and tub is large, like 1/4" or a bit more in an area or 2 and 1/4" deep. Beyond my better judgment, I went siliconed it anyway (with the tub full), left it for 4 days to make sure it cured good. and after the wife’s 2nd bath, sure enough it pulled apart from the tile. So now, I love doing work twice!! Not! Now I have to clean it out for a second time. What are your recommendations on the following:
    1. Cleaning the old silicone off the tub and tile thoroughly so that the NEW silicone will stick to it?
    2. The proper silicone to use? ( I used DAP Kwik Seal Ultra Premium Siliconized Sealant - White)
    3. Seeing how the gaps are quite large, what should I use in these large gaps before siliconing as I DO NOT want to do this a 3rd time.
    4. Any other information would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks for your time, I hope to hear from you!
    Shawn

    • @dominicjoslin5431
      @dominicjoslin5431 4 года назад

This video is a neat outcome, if you are willing to ignore the 1/2 inch smear of silicone on each side of the bead of sealant. Once on, it can never be totally removed. Try taping first, and then use water with detergent before the finger shaping.

Great video, Jeff, thanks for posting. I have a question. I just finished regrouting the joint between the tub and the tile after the grout started to crack and water found its way behind the grout. The joint is 1/2 an inch wide and the regrouting looks great. My question is, do I still need to silicone around the tub with a joint that wide? My concern is that by caulking the area, water will still find its way behind the grout and wont be able to evaporate because of the silicone. Curious to get your thoughts. Thanks again for all your DIY videos.

Your entire tile, grout, and silicone DIY series is incredible. I am just finishing grouting the 1 foot x 2 foot porcelain wall time to the wall with the fixtures which I replaced. Your information saved me from making lots of mistakes. I think I just made a few. The process was my first tiling project and I certainly learned a lot and saved a lot. I think I will do the floor tiling next. It is needed also.
Is the same 1 foot x 2 foot porcelain tile i used in the tub surround acceptable to use on the floor. I do not think it has a glaze/varnish coat on it. Thanks again so much Jeff. You are quite talented and make it look possible!

Love the new into graphics! I also use the Fugi tool as well. Just a tiny 1/8" bead, I make the hole in my tube as a small as it can be and still allow the poker rod to penetrate the plastic seal. Then the Fugi tools it down perfectly, much better than my finger, and caulk doe snot ride up the wall.

Quick question Sir! Is there a reason you didn't use the clear silicone to seal the tub to the gray floor? I'm just wondering if the clear silicon isn't a strong so you decided not to use it there, or you simply used the white because you were already rolling with it for the rest of the tub.

can i just say after doing hundreds of tiling jobs the most important thing is ventilation for keeping your tiling joints nice and clean after the tiling work is completed.using spray bleach with a toothbrush on the grouting every now again helps to keep it looking new for years to come.also if you ever wipe the tiles down never use a yellow dusting cloth as the dye will stain the grouting.

We had our master bath renovated in 2015 due to extensive moisture/mold issues and but the new faucet / handle areas were not caulked! Does this mean we possibly have the same issues that we were trying to solve?? How do we know if water is getting in there? They also put grout around where the tub meets the tile, and the grout all crumbled off within a few months (the tub is very flexible). I caulked it instead, but the tub is tilted just enough for water to collect in one corner (about 1/5" deep of water). We have to be diligent about squeegee-ing and drying. But the caulk I did is now mildewy/moldy. So I have to remove and redo. How often is reasonable for needing to redo caulk usually? It seems kinda laborious for a bathroom that's just a few years old.

If you want a perfect finish and cut time by at least half, never use your finger. Cut the silicon spout straight, NOT at and angle. Apply silicone as much as needed, average amount is better than less. Make sure you have no gaps in the line of applied silicone (this is imperative).Spray silicon line with a light spray of water then use a popcicle stick 🍭 (in Australia we call them paddle pop sticks) on a 45° angle. Make you have no gaps in the line of applied silicone (this is imperative). The silicon will come off perfectly and you will only need one pass. Continue to wipe stick once you have accumulated enough silicone on it. This method can be use in corners, walls, ceilings, doors, windows etc. The water that you spray onto the silicone and area around it ensures it is removed with ease and without smear. Just a little tip i thought you and your followers may find handy. Keep up the great vids! 👍

The silicone caulk I used was tacky and smeared when I tried to smooth it with my fingers. Saw a video where a light spray of isopropyl alcohol first over the caulk made it easier to work with. Is there a difference in silicone caulks?

Hi Jeff - absolutely love your videos and they've helped answer so many questions over the years. The way you communicate the info resonates strongly.
I have a shower remodel nearly completed in my master bath (DIY homeowner... walk-in shower with dimensions 48W x 54L x 120H) and am ready to grout (planning to use Laticrete Spectralock 1). I have a question on caulking shower corners (ran across this video) that I find has two competing POVs and am interested in your POV.
One POV I found is to grout the corners with the rest of the shower and then apply caulk. The other is to NOT grout the corners and instead, only caulk them to leave room for movement.
If you were building a shower from scratch, how would you finish the corners?

I've watched a lot of your videos and I think you're the best teacher out there, but this Silicone is installed wrong. 2 tips
1: use silicone profilers, they work amazingly, one side to push the other to clean. I think you can get them on ebay for under a dollar. but for an extra few dollars you can get the tile silicon profilers.
2: use water to make it mold proof. if you just use your finger you leave tiny holes and mold will grow, even in the best antimold silicon, it just takes longer.
If I was doing it for myself I'd only use Tec7, it's far better than anything else on the market

I am wondering if it would be better to partially fill my acrylic/ fiberglass tub with water before I apply the red guard down over the edges of the ridge the cement board sits above.. Being there us a 1/4" gap between them.. If caulk would require this step, wouldn't the red guard ??

Jeff is spot on regarding silicone. The special "20 year guarantee" stuff is crap. Just get a low modulus silicone. It does the same job, and is a damn sight cheaper.
When sealing a bath, be it steel or acrylic, i always filled the bath.
It replicates the weight of a body lying in it, and when you release the water, once the sealant has dried, you have an excellent seal.
I also seal internal corners on tiles, and wall to ceiling joint. ALWAYS.

When he puts the caulk down at the bottom of the bathtub, did he remove any of the substance between the tiles and the tub? They say that you are supposed to remove the old silicone/caulk first. However, there usually isn't a lot of stuff there like there is between the top of the bathtub and the wall. So what should we do if, in the area between the tiles and the bottom of the tub, it looks a little dirty/moldy but we don't see a lot of silicone/caulk to remove. Just put new silicone/caulk down after cleaning it or something else?

A good trick to get nice clean caulk joint is to spray the silicone bead with rubbing alchol before you smooth it out with your finger or caulking tools, it keeps it from smearing.

i learned to apply caulk using blue tape at the seam separating the tub and tile floor. i also use a smaller bead when i do to minimize excess on my finger and tape. that caulk spreads everywhere on any tile that has the slightest hint of texture, killing a straight bead.

Hello! Thank you for sharing all this information! I have an old mobile home and there is a big gap (3/4 to 1/2 in) between tiles and top of the tub, which I filled couple times with cocking, but cracks and had to be done again. My question is: should I use tin set, or silicone, or any other filler to seal the gap?

I just finished installing MSI Hampshire 12 in. x 12 in. Gauged Slate Floor and Wall Tile that I got from Homedepot on our bathroom, it is not a smooth surface tile so when I put the grout because is not a smooth tile the grout got in every single crack and groove possible plus it dried a bit too long and now I'm suffering the consequences. How do you remove dried grout from the surface of the tile?

Believe or not. We’ve been in this house 19 years. Never had to recaulk once, never had mold. NEVER
My cousin had a squeegee in her shower and I asked her about it. She dries her walls and caulk lines after each shower.
So in this house we did the same.
No mold ever. Gotta check after the kids shower to make sure they toweled the caulk lines.
It only takes 3 minutes to dry the walls and caulk lines.
If you take a shower and leave
You will have the water sitting and you will get mold.
    I’m thankful to my cousin.
