Replacement of a Garage Door Opener, Chamberlain Opener

- This is a bit different from the other videos I've done.
Just bought a new house and realized the garage needed a bit of TLC. First order of business was replacing the garage door opener. The old Craftsman unit needed a new belt and a couple new transmitters. With those costs reaching the price of a new unit I decided to just replace it. I was able to salvage the mounting bracket used by the Craftsman unit which made this repair much easier.
The new unit is a Chamberlain LW5000EV. Bought this unit from the local big box store.
coincidentally, Craftsman openers are manufactured by Chamberlain which may explain some similarities during the replacement in bolt placement and mounting.
Enjoy!

Helpful video. My old unit failed today after 35 years :-) and I have a new one to install tomorrow. Thanks for making the effort to video your adventure.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
At my old place, my opener broke, so I got a rebuild kit from Sears for $18, lol.
So many homes and businesses need additional Garage Door Repair info to keep them in good shape.
Great job! Your being very thorough helped provide extra insight required for even a more recent installation, including various other models manufactured similarly.
Thanks for the Video, I appreciated your candid comments when you figured out what you did wrong, not leaving it up to us to guess. I've never installed a garage door opener; however, I consider myself as a DIY Guy so your video convinced me to take this on myself and avoid paying the $200 installation fee! Nice job. Best.
Very useful video. I just finished installing my first belt driven garage door opener, the Chamberlain B970. I did the same thing that the author JungleKing007 did, I didn't use the 5/16" diameter clevis pin because it was loose fitting. Instead I reused another manufacturer's door bracket, clevis pin and curved door arm. The advantage of reusing the existing door bracket is that you don't need to remove it, drill holes for the new bracket, fill the old holes with caulk and repaint the outside of the garage door. It was necessary for me to reverse the Chamberlain straight door arm, but I was able to get two 1/2" bolts to match up with the other manufacturer's curved door arm. I have the original heavy two car garage door on a 1966 house.
When the other manufacturer's 1/2hp screw drive model ceased to open and close the garage door I replaced the carriage as their tech support suggested, but it didn't fix the problem. I called the other manufacturer's tech support again and was told to replace the sequencer board. I asked her to spell it for me which she did. When I searched for it I soon found out she had not spelled it correctly. Another video's author said that if the sequencer board is bad you might as well change units which is I bought the Chamberlain 1 1/4hp. I hope I don't have any more problems.
Now I see what I done wrong! I didn't adjust the travel button. That's why my railing kept bending when I open/close the door. Thank You so much!
I did that once or twice myself trying to understand the button sequence to program the travel. Glad to help!
Excellent job! I am getting ready to install a chain drive and this will help immensely.
Thank you very much for this! I have an old Chamberlain that I am replacing with a new one I just got from Sears. After watching your video, I feel pretty confident about the install!
La mejor explicacion que he visto por qué no entiendo inglés pero eres el mejor 👌👌👌👏👏👏
Good job, I am installing this exact unit tomorrow. This video will help me accomplish what you did. Like you this will be my first garage door installation.
Thanks,
Loved your video i just got the same opener and going to out it up this weekend your video was what i was looking for in replacing old with new thanks alot and keep up the great work.
Great video! I'll be sure to follow this on my next repair.
Thanks for the vid, I'm installing similar unit and planning on finishing(bolting it in place) in a couple days and you gave me a good idea on steps yet to do. Thanks
Thanks very much... I just bought a new Chanberlain garage door opener and you have explain it perfect. thanks again and Merry Christmass and Happy New Year
Great job ! You gave me more information than Chamberlain. Thanks for the help.
Good video, I bought the chain drive unit, your video helped a lot.
Very good video. I was thrilled to see its so recent. We just got (more or less) the same package from Costco and I wanted to watch a few videos after reading the instruction manual.
vegaskatus You are welcome! I hadn't seen any recent myself so I figured I would post one. If anything to show one of the many ways these can be installed. Thank you for watching and good luck with your install!
JungleKing007 The install went just fine, though it took me all afternoon. I took my time as it was the first time I'd done this and didn't want to mess up anything I couldnt easily fix. I saved a good bit of time by leaving the U shaped nails in place from the old one, though I did add a few extras in spots that I thought needed it or where I'd accidentally popped an old one off the wall. I was pleasantly surprised when it worked the first time I turned it on. Can't say as I have any complaints about the instructions either, though I did find your video really helpful. Thanks again!
Chris B bah
Thank you for sharing. This was very helpful!
Very informative video. It's encouraging to see that you did this by yourself. I assembled the garage door opener, but had the trolley in wrong direction, which was quite difficult to fix. I'll try to finish the install this weekend. (Your old and new garage door openers look the same as mine)
thank you! I hope mine goes smooth!
Thank's for the video, now I know it won't be bad to replace mine!
thanks for the video, because of it I was able to knock out my install in 90min..... :)
Nice video. Great job.
Good choice on opener! My grandma has the same model and i have a few videos of it on my channel.
Thank you.
great job! thank you!!
Best part of this video was the idea to run the sensor wires through the shaft. Unfortunately, I didn't decide to do that until I found out that my existing sensors wouldn't work with this unit and I had to install the new ones anyway. My suggestion to anyone looking to run the wires inside, drop them in the tab that got bent up near the end of the shaft. Don't run them through the pulley area. Before you install the shaft, run a line (rope or something like it) through the shaft and tape off the ends so that you can tape your wires to the line and pull them through the shaft.
The one thing that many of these installments never tell you is that the tracks and the door must all be aligned and leveled.
how did the old one break
Belt was heavily cracked, and dry-rotted. Also very loud. The cost to replace the belt was nearly half the cost of a new standard unit so I decided to upgrade the drive unit to something better.
@@jungleking007Channel gotcha, yeah we have an overhead door that has been broken for 2 years cause the motherboard went bad, the units worth is probably 50 buks, but the motherboard was like 100 buks, So im just gonna wait untill we move soon lol.
Excellent
Great Job
Hi thanks for the video. I noticed that you installed the long arm to the trolley. I'm installing my opener now, and my directions said, unless I'm reading it incorrectly, to attached the rocker arm to the trolley and the long arm to the door. Am I mistaken?
Great video! Doing this this weekend. Could you have used the old wires so you wouldn't have to reroute the new ones?
+Steve Fish I don't think the sensors from the old unit were compatible with the new one. Plus I think I made the wiring look better by putting in the new ones.
Ok thanks. Was going to do it today but shoveled snow instead.
Used my old wires just follow the instructions in the manual can't go wrong and I used my old sensors, Every thing ok.
Eggzelent werk!
Thanks a lot! I'll be tackling this this weekend. Looks time consuming but easy enough.
Do you recall how long it took? (I understand it was probably longer due to the video).
Thanks again.
+Mark Hammock believe it took me 2 hours to put up. I was lucky the mounting locations between old and new were very similar so that cut down on time. Good luck!
You forgot to put on the manual release rope and handle
I just bought a Chamberlain WIFI whisper garage door opener. I'm in the same "boat" as you. Never done this before and am replacing a working Chamberain belt drive. I was hoping I could just "swap" the driver unit and not everything as you did. I will find out shortly. Anyway, after reading the manual I was a little confused on some parts but your video explained everything so well I feel confident I can swap out mine now with no problems, even if I have to replace the rail system. What do you think about my idea of not replacing the rail portion?
I would replace everything. There may be slight differences between models that will make using old parts impractical. Plus, you spent the money on the kit that includes all new parts. Might as well start fresh. Thanks for watching and Good Luck!
you need to run it up and down so we can see how good it is. and did know it is battey back up. wcountryboy
wcountryboy Thought about showing it go up and down. I may do a quick video showing the finished product with wires up and how it works soon. Battery is installed, didn't think it necessary to show. Thanks for watching!
Hi, should the trolley track be perfectly level...does it matter if the motor end is a bit higher/lower than the header end? thx for posting the video!
+Keith Tse think the book says to make it as level as possible. I think mine slopes very slightly downward towards the door. Haven't seen this having caused any issues with how the door is raised and lowers. If the slope is to severe there May be issues with over extending the arm or binding in the track.
JungleKing007.. Thx, I managed to to get it pretty level. Works great
Jungleking007 what's up I put the belt drive garage door opener in a few months ago and I love it it's quiet it won't wake up any one the Douglas's garage door itself is loader then my garage door opener.
There can be nice features with new openers, although at my old place I was lucky enough not to have those crappy idiot sensors, so I would not have given up on that opener. I almost took it with me when I moved, lol. In this case, at the very least, I think I would have reused the T rail. Box rails are annoyingly flimsy.
That new opener does have a pretty color, tho.
Hi Jungleking007 I have the same belt drive opener shown in this video but the model number is different than the model number shown in this video and I currently have it sitting in the back garage right now what do you think about it
+brandon ward I like it a lot. It's quiet, opens quickly, and very little maintenance needed. The best feature of this unit in my opinion is the auto close feature. If we accidentally forget to press the button to close the door and we drive off, it will do it on its own after a preset time(ours is 5 minutes). Mainly for security.
I know you like it a lot and it has the auto close feature and I know it's quiet but I haven't installed it yet Jungleking007
Thanks for video, can you you help me please. have a door opener chamberlain model 2259, and need block diagram and electric diagram to repair. thanks a lot.
+TheFirstcrazyhorse Chamberlains website should have the diagrams you need, or send them a request and they should be able to assist with finding what you need.
I thought the garage door opener with a belt should be much quitter but it makes a lot of noise ...why?
+saboor saboor it's pretty quiet to me. Kitchen is on the other side of the door and can not hear it open. The majority of the noise could be coming from your door. Try lubricating the guide wheels and the hinges. May also have someone check the spring tension to make sure there is not too much stress on the opener motor.
gread job. i did some thing 3 days ago it was east to do. not bad. my is a chamberlain garage door opener with my iq and batter back up
I realize your video is 3 years old, but you would have done much better buying a Liftmaster Jackshaft Opener, which is mounted on the side of your garage door, directly onto the torsion bar. Very little assembly required, and a lot less moving parts.
Just looked it up, now wish I knew these existed when I was doing my replacement! Something like this will be in the running next time I have to replace an opener. Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome. I just replaced mine. I got the LM 8500W, which comes with backup battery and built-in wifi. Very nice and super quiet.

Yours were good because of the perspective you provided as a new user. Thanks!
helpful but could be edited down about 15 minutes shorter
Unfortunately didn't show how to adjust the down travel took the camera off the adjustment and showed the door in the down position.. Learned nothing about how to adjust the down position other than push the button!
+joe Bender You are pressing and holding the button until the necessary down position is reached. May have to bump it a few times to get the last inch or two. I apologize it wasn't perfect, but holding a camera and manual, balancing on a ladder, and pressing buttons at the same time can be a bit difficult.
