Billy Graham once (or many times) said something like, "For many people Jesus is 12" inches away-the distance from the head to the heart." Jordan is a moralist. He admires Christ, but he loves Jung. He often quotes Jesus, but filters him through Jungian teachings. He knows nothing about being Born Again, regeneration is not a work of God, it is an act of the will. He's not almost saved, he's almost a liturgical religionist. He likes forms and symbols. He "sees through a glass darkly," but unless he repents he won't "see face to face." I love him and pray for him.

Psychologists are some of the most craziest people, along with psychiatrists, in the world. It isn't surprising. He broke under tremendous stress. He is now pretending to be Christlike to cope with his mental decline. We shouldn't follow Gurus or idols. Jesus is the way, not Peterson or any other person claiming to be some kind of leader of the people. Perhaps, turn to the Bible for guidance or the pastor. If you are so gullible to believe in a Guru like Peterson, then where is your faith in Christ? Have you not read up in the Bible about worshipping idols and their serpent-like tongue that lies so easily? There is only one way, and that is through Jesus. Peterson is a false idol. Plain and simple.

I would assert his wife becoming catholic that anti-christian/biblical religion of old would not be a good. And i'm not saying that lightly. Bible says by faith and grace in God alone and some more key points. If you take catholicism at face value according to the "official teachings" from the catholic cannon i'm anathema-ed because know the Bible teaches by faith and grace apart from work, for that i'm on my way to hell... So the problem with Mr. Peterson's wife becoming catholic if/when Mr Peterson might go for a relationship with Christ it will be the false one in Catholicism you think? This "MUST" is at the same level of John 3:3 "You must be born again... that would be John 4:24) God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” No matter how sincere one might believe a false Christ will only get one into hell. Kind of in line with Acts 17:30) Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, Repenting would include tearing down the false God as it would also go against:
Exo 20:1) Then God spoke all these words, saying,
      2) “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
      3) “You shall have no other gods before Me.
      4) “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
      5) You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,
In the end God is a God of truth... Like He said "I am The way, The truth and the Life..." Also considering Rom 1, would assert all know God, for God has made it evident so that all men are without excuse...

I would say this is incorrect because he has a wrong understanding of grace. I further your comment by saying that he is a disciple of Jungian psychology, and Jung was an occultist and a mystic. Peterson's major misstep, the thing He gets wrong is that Christianity is NOT based on the Christian but rather on the Father, through the Son, by the power of the Holy Spirit. He is viewing it as an endeavor of man instead of an endeavor of God. Part of me thinks it may be less a misstep and more his intent(just conjecture).

Dr. Peterson has a wonderful heart. He attempts to do what so many pastors in their preaching do not. That is, make the "right-living" teachings of scripture relatable so we can apply it at a practical level. He is, after all, a clinical psychologist. That's what he does, help people sort out their lives. That is all to be commended, but what he leaves out is the foundation; knowing God. Dr. Peterson places the burden of turning one's life around entirely on self, and the Holy Spirit is left out of the picture. He has stated that he's no longer an atheist, but I'm not yet convinced he even believes in anything spiritual beyond God's existence. The mysteries of God's word are spiritually discerned, and Dr. Peterson seems to rely entirely on his intellect. He has plenty of practical wisdom for helping people get their act together and live something of a decent life, but none of that will point people to Christ. I pray the Lord opens his eyes.

I'm curious did this video help you? I have been a Christian for a long time and I hated this video. I don't know who this guy is or what he teaches but based on this video I'd be embarrassed if he was my Pastor. Maybe he does a better job in his other videos. For me, he criticizes Jordan, who's a young Christian and still trying to in the public eye sort all this out. Second, this guy is frantic "We're dealing with some serious stuff here" like get a grip. As if the LORD is running around panicking where everyone is at. Have some faith in the LORD and His work in people's lives. He also seems to have bought into the whole religion of morality "This is about moral obligation" NO it's not. Morality is the antithesis of Jesus. Morality has never and will never save anyone. As people both Christians and non-Christians, we like to first define morality and then convince ourselves we are moral to feed our egos.
Morality is a roadblock to Jesus not a path to Jesus. Morality is an illusion and a deception that the self-righteous buy into.
I expect when I listen to Jordan about the Bible that he's going to get it wrong because he's very young spiritually trying to understand it. However, when a channel is called "The Wise Disciple" critiquing Jordan I expect both wisdom and grace in knowing Jordan's spiritually young. I saw neither.
My comment in the general section wasn't so much on the video but to create a biblical foundation that was lacking.
The Sermon on the Mount which isn't even understood by many Christians is about basically the rules of heaven, of His Kingdom. It's not morality-based, it's spiritually based.
Matthew 5:3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Now many think we just need to be poor in Spirit, or meek, or live modest, or whatever.
But Scripture tells us Romans 3:9 What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin.
10 As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one;..."
The delusion of morality is that if we are just more moral than maybe we can get to heaven. Our sins are not what keeps us out of Heaven. We can't just be more moral.
1 Cor 15:50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption.
Ss long as you and I are human we cannot enter Heaven, EVER. So what has Jesus done? Well, He says for us to put our trust in Him to save us. the moment we do we are Born again. Our dead Spirit is made alive. Now when we die our soul goes to Heaven and our bodies stay in the ground.
2 Cor 5:6 So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. 7 For we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.
No matter how moral or immoral you are as long as you're flesh and blood you will not enter Heaven. You either have Jesus or you don't.
Having Jesus means your soul is saved and will go to heaven and on resurrection day we will be given new immortal bodies 1 Cor 15"50-57.
This is why we are a new creation. We are neither dead to sin like humans nor divine like angels. We are a mixed breed and we are at war within ourselves daily.
Romans 7 and this is why 2 Cor 12 says :9 And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
Because His grace is sufficient while we are here while we seem to live for the LORD one second and ourselves or the world the next.
      It used to be understood you either have Jesus or you don't. So let's share the Gospel. Then help them grow to share the Gospel. To understand the young in the faith will waiver, adopt incorrect theology, struggle with stuff, past life, addictions, on fire for the LORD one day, back in the bars the next. Our job as mature Christians was to help walk with them and help them grow. To trust the LORD as Phillippians 1 says 6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;
and trusting the LORD's work in their lives. His timing, His pace, but not today. Maybe I'm too critical but it was both sad and infuriating for me to watch the video. I'm curious as to your thoughts.

I think that analysis like this for Jordan Peterson is time very well spent. He is so phenomenally smart and has a lot of good insights, but everything that he does unfortunately just falls short because he just won't engage with the Bible as a believer. He is super good at understanding human nature from a psychological standpoint, especially from the standpoint of understanding human nature from the stories that resonate with truth of human nature. The unfortunate limitation though is that that is as far as his biblical understanding goes. He treats it like meaningful stories rather than revelation from God.

Peterson allows his intellect to get in the way of true understanding that he confuses the fear of God for a psychological blueprint or pattern and never gets to the spiritual meat of the gospel substance. He still sees it as humanistic derivative insight of the mind. A relationship with God is so much more than just that… he’s trying I guess, And I believe God is working with him but he needs to let go of psychology and open both his heart and mind to what God wants for him.

Seriously. I find it disappointing to see so much criticism when Peterson is clearly speaking about the Bible in a language that secularists can relate to. I was one of those secularists not too long ago and he was one of the main influences that allowed me to come to Christ.
Peterson is uniquely capable of bringing people so far gone from the path that they have lost all sight of it, back into the paths direction. Is he perfectly on path and bringing those people back onto solid ground? No. But he is pulling orders of magnitude more people than any preacher alive today. People who were so far gone into secularism and atheism that no pastor or priest could ever appeal to.
God is truly working through Peterson, even if his message is imperfect.

Most importantly, we must recognize what purpose his words serve, and at that moment, their purpose is aimed at the person in front of him, just like this video is aimed at us. We are a very different audience, operating at a very different level of understanding. To make conclusion about the insight a teacher has in a subject, from how he speaks to a child, is silly, when we have not heard him speak to a peer. Just like it would be silly to judge children's understanding by the standards of adults. Not to say, there are always new things we can learn from even the simplest of observations, if we just keep our heart open to receive it.

I love JP, he was influential in me coming to know Christ, as he made me think about God seriously for the first time in my life.
That being said, the man will absolutely ignore the text when it suits his desires.
Example: when discussing Jonah, Peterson describes Jonah's impetus to disobey God as a fear of the Ninevites. This fits into his worldview quite nicely.
Anyone who reads the text, however, can see quite clearly that Jonah rejects the instruction of God due to hatred.
It is true that Jonah being motivated by fear is a common misconception amongst those who are not very biblically literate.
However, I expect a man as intelligent, thoughtful, and supposedly dedicated to truth as JP to not make such mistakes when they are so clearly laid out in the text of scripture.

Peterson's explanations are simply secular translations that make the central themes palletable to agnostics and atheists. Aim high = a baby step pointing you to realize there are things better than others. Then from there, you get to the ultimate good. = Aim to please God.
Tell an atheist or a secularist that Jesus is the ultimate good and you should serve him and aim to please... See how many you convert and bring to Christ...
I think this whole video completely misses the mark regarding what role Peterson plays in the current Christian revival. Moreover, the Sermon on the Mount starts with the Beautitudes, which describe the sufferings will endure if we're born-again, so the starting context is about being born-again (a miraculous state of being), not aiming anywhere.

I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent". 1 Corinthians: 18-25. Unless a man is born again of the Spirit of God he cannot see the Kingdom of God. Dr Jordan Peterson is using his wisdom and understanding to interpret the word of God. A very serious thing to do. "Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God." He really needs to be challenged by true believers. He is trying to enter the narrow gate to salvation through his own endeavours. Essentially without surrender to Jesus Christ the Lord.

I get that he see that Christianity and the Bible is a HUGE thing as he says it all the time but it like at most he sees it as important but for some reason he doesn’t see that it is absolutely mandatory. It’s like someone needs to tell him that part of it.

I am often disappointing anytime JP talks about scripture or Christianity. It’s almost like he refuses to believe in the clear teachings of the Bible, but he does believe that it is a net good in the world. So he tries to reinterpret God’s Word using his own psychoanalysis bent.

Thank you for speaking straight and not holding back. Watching him interviewed on some other channels, I see people feel intimidated at correcting him. I think people have shown him enough grace and patience. “Aiming up” and “aligning with the good,” etc is moralistic and pragmatically therapeutic. He misses the point of the message because he doesn’t express anything about the relationship of law and gospel, and the necessity of a propitiatory sacrifice. I saw a clipped video of him on Pints with Aquinas, and there he said that the faith is “not propositional truth.” Later he seems to say it is true in a historical sense, but he muddies things with saying things that are false or emphasizing things that should not be emphasized. Thanks for interacting with this.

In my estimation, for those who have heard and accepted the gospel message, Dr. Peterson adds a brilliant and fascinating take on many stories found in scripture that Christians can discern their way through.
Frankly I love listening to the guy! That said, I completely understand how his teachings on scripture can be confusing or incomplete for those who are unaware or still seeking.

St. Paul in his letter to the Corinthians sums it up. "If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith...Think of it this way. If Christ didn't die (on our behalf) and actually (physically) resurrect, Peterson nailed it. As Christians, however, we know there is much more to the story.
Thank you for making this video and clearing this up for us! May God’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven!

Not everything has to be uncovered. We just need to ask forgiveness for our sins and the sins of those who have trespassed against us and move the heck on. He did say, go and sin no more, He didnt say sit down w a psychiatrist and figure it all out. God brings healing that "uncovering" will never fix. Many times a step of faith in the right direction and doing the hard thing no matter how we feel, is what brings the healing. Many times we have to forgive ourselves more than anyone or anything. God is so beautiful and kind to love us. more than we deserve. Accepting that love and forgiveness brings the healing.

Here's something people really need to consider. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is unforgivable and it's a fine line when someone refers to themselves as God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Picture a person standing in the presence of God and explaining why they referred to themselves as Mary, Jesus, God, John the Baptist, John the revelator, apostles, the mother of John the Baptist, etc. I for one will not be standing beside them. Imagine what it's gonna be like when they come face to face with the real Heavenly righteous ones in Heaven that were from the day's of old. What account will they give, what excuse will they have other then they did it to lead people to hell. What a shame.........

Enjoying the video, though I wanted to point out, Peterson isn’t a Christian. He’s danced around it with words, but if you listen to him, as in this video, his whole hope is to give people a way to function and in a Jung way wants them to tap into the stories that will make them a better husband and better father a better mother and so on… but he never speaks about Christ Jesus and his saving act upon the cross. Who does the spirit declare and speak of, Jesus, those who are born of the spirit are spirit, those who are born of the flesh flesh.

Dr. Jordan is speaking to both believers and non believers. he said, "looking up means to align yourself with the Spirit of God." this is for the believer.
Then he said, "if you want to bring it down to earth, (practicality) you can aim to improve on yourself as an upward aim." this is for the non believer.
if JP speaks only using Christian terms, everything he says will fall on deaf ears. So rather than allowing that to happen, he decides to come to where the non believers are and speak in a way that they understand. (Sound like Christ to me.)

So glad you addressed this conversation, Nate. My husband and I watched the entire interview between Matt Fradd and Jordan Peterson in which Peterson communicates a lot of the same ideas. It left us both pretty frustrated but at the same time more informed of the angle in which Peterson approaches the concepts in the Word of God...an angle which seems to be void of the truth that God is a relational being who has given us a way out of our slavery to sin and death by means of the redemptive blood of His Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior. We cannot read the truths in the Bible, and then proclaim them while leaving out honor and loyalty to God. We cannot overcome our flaws/sin by "taking up our own cross" as Jesus did, as if Jesus was only just an example for us. Benefiting from the Logos of God and the things and ideas and patterns of life that HE has created while attempting to diminish or extract Him out of the equation sounds an AWFUL lot like the original sin in the garden. 😶 Just sayin.

Prayers for Dr. Peterson. I must say, in a sense, he did nail the center of the Chiasm, "on Earth as it is in Heaven" when he describes what our aims should be and the lives we should strive to live, albeit in what could also be agreed upon in secular terms, in which case we alone are incapable of. It's like recognizing the Bible is full of incredible wisdom but attributing the brilliance behind it purely to social evolution or something approximating that. I do agree with you and many of the commenters here, and am always saddened by the sense he's so close to the mark yet seems to be pushing back at the central truth. I have been praying for him to brought back to that same powerful humble place when we saw him brought to tears saying quite publicly, he actually believed the story of the gospel. There is a corollary in his struggles and many of ours, which should bring a great sense of humility. Congratulations to those who were, but not all of us, while perhaps pricked, were knocked over completely by the gospel the first time or even the second time we heard it. Further many of us strayed back into sin and doubt, only to then return as a prodigal, myself included. I've seen in the case of family and friends, that the same intellect many admire in Jordan can also serve as an opaque mask preventing one from seeing behind the veil he so often touches, to the reality behind it.

You give "aim up" a different definition and then argue with that definition. You said we are here to know God. He says we are here to align ourselves with God. Are those two really that different? Aim up = Clean your room, then Aim up = Clean up your life, then Aim up = Align yourself with God. Bear in mind that the question he was answering was, "Why shouldn't I live for the moment." He was not doing exegesis on the Sermon. He was using it answer the question.

Peterson does one thing very well. He aims to redusce the 'mysticism' associated with religion in general and often uses Chistianity because it alone captures the struggles of life that everyone must face better than other religions. He once said the 'Logo' or Word is uniquely posistion to do this.
He is speaking to an audiance that has been brianwashed to reject religion. They were explicitly taught there is nothing beneficial to gleen or gather from that way of thinking ie to seek meaming from stories.
He strives to show that religious language strives to encode the most basic struggles of human exisitence. His undestanding of religion is closely interwoven with his knowledge in psychology often making and reducing religious links to life struggles in very insightful ways.
His understanding of God rivals most because he sees the Word in converstaion with others through histoy, not just Abrahams seed. He even discerns where their biases clouded the true message that God intended to convey. He is in deep communion with 'THE TRUTH' and wants to convey the depth of that communion by describing it in striking simple and familiar ways.
I pray that others see 'God's influence' with the depth and sofistication he does.

You are right. God uses him. But you don't understand that all of it does not even lead people to Christ. If he does not adress the most crucial aspects. Be blrn acain. Forgive others to be forgiven. He talks about that life is to live out your purpouse and kill the dragon/the heroes journey...But esoteric people, human right activists, vegans, also some muslims are doing exactly this...And some of them who are conservative celebrate Jordan Peterson & promote him AND they don't konw Jesus. So what was the point? Jesus sayed that in the end people who cast out demons in Jesus name & healed the sick in his name...will go to hell. Because you can know a part of the truth. But only THE truth will set you free. So this video right here. This pastor right here is doing what apostle Paul advised us but even more what Jesus advised us. Put the plank out of your eye and only then you are allowed to judge (don't condemn) your brother. Because that's love. Paul also sayed that he is judging the people inside the church but not the unbelievers (because how could they understand).
So you are essentially saying to a pastor that he should not instruct his maybe fellow saint.. so he could bear more fruit & could lead far more people to Christ. Which is by the way the duty of a pastor. To care about his fellow sheep. And which is the duty of all saints to go inside and see if we do sth. wrong. Like King David sayed to God. J. P. himself advises - to kill your inner dragon. So he even would wish to get christian advice...at least I believe so. Because I respect him.
