On pro, you can use group policy to fully disable automatic updates. If you disable anti tamper protection you can also disable windows defender fully via group policy. Defender kills performance a lot when you are on a limited performance budget.
You can update Win 10 Home as I just installed the OS following your instructions of course (Thank you for that!) but after installing I figured I would check for shits and giggles and it worked perfectly fine. I also used the actual latest build "Windows 10 Insider Preview 21376.1 (co_release) [arm64] and this worked as well. Just thought I would let you and the rest of your viewers know..
Oh and I also forgot to mention that you are right Lee, the updates are fully controllable and they are even selective for "arm64" and they actually work! Ejecting/unplugging USB (properly) now doesn't crash the system on Build 21376 also.
Thanks for this, Lee. Works brilliantly.
Great video. WoR just keeps getting better & better.
Win 10 Runs well on the pi with an ssd. Creating the iso Takes a lot Time, That is the only disadvantage
Just installed Win 10 on rasp pi 4 , worked great so far!!! Thanks!! Looking forward to wifi enabled update

Update: Well, I now have a Pi 400 running build 21376 of Windows 10 Pro overclocked to 2.3GHz and 750MHz video at the native resolution (1920x1200) of my Lenovo monitor and it is flying! My Pi 400 is now officially faster than my ageing Acer 5738Z Laptop running the same version of Windows (x86 obviously)!! This is ridiculous and in some ways is actually faster than Raspi Linux! (Did I forget to mention that I was watching Lee's video whilst typing this?!)
Well done! I've had a pi4 sitting for nearly a year and now I can try this project. Does your affiliate links work for Japan Amazon?
I don’t think so.
Great video, as always. 👍
Saves WOR. Grand Theft Auto Vice City is a good game bro.
If you consider debloating - after I did debloating the image many applications (about 25% from 50 I tried) didn't want to install as they needed system files that were removed in the debloating process. So I tried installing W10 again, using original wim and they all installed properly. Might run a bit slower but it's fully compatibile.
I wonder how malware interacts with windows ARM since I have seen a lot of evasive malware check the windows specs prior to downloading its payload.
Does the pi 400 support PXE boot? If so, then it can be cloned and snapshot'd with something like FoG/clonezilla.
You know you're at a turning point when you realize that it has become much easier to install Linux than Windows.
Yup from personal experience plus Linux is quicker too.
*on a pi.
especially with netboot =)
Twister os also released a new version (2.02). Great video anyway.
I like your WOR videos! Do you know if they plan to release the GPU drivers sometime in the future?
Great video as usual Lee, and don't take my comments as criticism as they are not... But, not being a Windows fan (big Mac user and multiple Pi systems), I just have to ask myself why I would put Windows onto a Pi? Because I can... is a great answer, but it would be good to hear about some examples of good use or reasons for running it on a Pi when a linux variant was not as good, or that Windows was much better than an alternative.
People sometimes mention in the comments specific software they require that’s only on Windows. Updating a device like an old satnav may only work on Windows.
@@leepspvideo That would make sense if all old x86 software works on Windows for ARM. It doesn’t. And every piece of modern software that is compiled for Windows on ARM is already available for MacOS, Linux, iOS, etc.
Not all old software works, but a lot of programs install normally. I have installed quite a lot of older programs in previous videos.
Works like charm. Only problem with build WiFi Raspberry which is not supported at all (like all my very old WiFi USB adapters)... probably new WiFi USB adapter can solve problem...
Most usb WiFi Adaptors aren’t supported

@@leepspvideo Yes I saw....that probably only solution right now. Btw, Win10 Home works really neat from SD! Better then my average old Lenovo Laptop !!! Good tutorial, thanks!

Well, I followed your video and it was a long slog with the latest 21H1 Windows Home image (6.5GB!!) but I'm now typing this in a Gmail window in Edge (albeit slowly!) while doing updates in the background and I can't believe how ridiculously fast this is on my Pi400!! 😁 (Currently running MS Store updates at the same time!)
Only a couple of complaints really. No sound of course but I also can't get my Bluetooth speaker connected cause Bluetooth isn't working either yet. Also, to be able to do any kind of personalisation requires Windows to be activated which is a pain but hey, Windows running on my Pi400 like this is just the dog's! 😎
even tho it was 1 year, you can connect wired headphones/speakers
Excellent video. Thank you. 😀
Hello and great videos. I have two pi4 running ARM from micro cards, but I want to run them from ssd drives. Does the Pi4 have to be updated to get it to boot from the SSD drive. I followed this video, but the Pi4 Error that it can't find the sim card.
Leeps, did you notice that windows media player in WoR is "temporally" bugged in these last builds?
I haven’t tried. I use VLC.

Great video! Congrats! I have already done it with a Rasp 3B+ and it seems quite slow. Is it because I downloaded the Pro version instead of the Home one? Thanks a lot
It’s not even that fast on an 8GB Pi 4b. The lack of ram on a 3b+ is going to be a problem. The best you can do is use the fastest storage available for a 3b
@@leepspvideo Thanks! I am actually on a 32Gb Samsung microSD which is not optimal. The only available alternative I do have right now is a HDD but I do not know if it would be enough or if it would be worthwhile buying an external SSD. Maybe a 128GB pen drive?

Hi Lee, thank you for the great videos. I'm just wondering if you ever resolved the issue of WoR crashing when ejecting a USB drive when running from an SSD drive. I've tried 21370.1, 21376, 21390.1 and even went back to the Project NEON.wim image (that I'm running from an HDD USB drive without this problem) but they all have the USB eject problem when running from the SSD (240GB AData). I'm using a 2GB Pi 4.
I haven’t, try asking on the Discord.
Great tutorial but I’m hesitant to try because I’ve seen other tutorials that are similar to this and when it’s writing on to my usb it fails after hours of loading any suggestions?
The method keeps changing. This video works, if it doesn’t work for you it’s likely your usb device.
Is anything unusual about your Windows device
@@leepspvideo No it’s a normal Windows laptop not sure what happened the first time but I think I figured it out my USB device didn’t have enough space on it so I’ve ordered a 128gb one from Amazon thanks for the help great video 😃

leepspvideo I am not sure: did you tell that downloading Windows version and crunching to ISO takes at least 1h? You should mentioned it because I was thinking that something stacked during procedures (like 20% of one downloading/crunching took 10-20 min) and I simple closed terminal.....This download and create ISO takes a lot of time.
Thanks for the video. One question: why do you change the display configuration, disabling native resolution and selecting Virtual 720p?
Performance is better at 720. Also I have found that initial installation seems more reliable at 720. After it’s installed 1080 still works fine.
@@leepspvideo Thanks! I could boot into W10 on the RPi today and started tweaking things but then when I rebooted I got a “preparing automatic repair” loop, so I’m trying again from scratch now
@@leepspvideo The second time with version 21382.1000 professional (insider) seems to work fine. I'm wondering have there been any issues with installing & running 3rd party windows software (which pretty much assumes it's be going on to a x86 / x64 type type system) only to have it on an arm64 system.
All that I tried worked apart from BitTorrent. The problem may have been the download as the official site wasn’t working.

I always recommend 32GB or more for Windows
Great tutorial, got everything up and running, mapped my network NAS drive. I do have an issue with the WOR_CP. The issue is that after downloading WOR_CP (control panel off of discord). Initially, it would not run at all (perpetual spinning wheel/mouse cursor) The only way to stop it was to either logout/login or reboot my Pi. If I right clicked the WOR_CP and chose compatibility mode, Windows 10 applied settings that allowed me to open the Pi control Panel but I cannot make any changes save. For me it doesn't matter, I don't use WoR in the pi4 for gaming, I use it to test apps
Debloating that I did caused about 25% apps to be unable to install
@@leepspvideo This is the problem with people who are not well-informed enough. Many of these existing Windows on PC users seem to believe that they just install the same versions of Windows and games on their Raspberry Pi that they do on their existing PCs. They don't understand that X86 and ARM CPUs are entirely different architectures and that you have to compile versions of code that are compatible with one or the other architecture first.
They'd make far better use of their time by abandoning their bloated and privacy-hating Windows OSes and not trying to crowbar them onto Raspberry Pi, and instead install an official OS like Raspberry Pi OS, which they can just download and install in about 20 minutes - then spend their time learning an OS for adults as opposed to wasting hours debloating an already badly broken OS.
Lazy people who cannot step out of their comfort zones should not use Raspberry Pi, which is ultimately designed for experimentation and learning anyway.
Personally, I appreciate that people have invested time in this, as I have end use scenarios in mind for Windows on Raspberry. Such as running programs that only live on Windows and don't require the processing resources of a full sized desktop, as well as the reduced power consumption a Raspberry benefits from.
I rarely have time for hanging about playing games, but video game performance seems a reasonable real time test of a device's capability to perform in certain situations. Not everyone uses computers the way I do.
I've watched a chat with Eben Upton, but I can't say for sure what his entire reason was for inventing the Pi. He did mention having an OS that runs on every Pi model as one of his aims. I think he's on Twitter if you want to ask him about what Raspberry Pi was ultimately designed for, or maybe he'll comment in this chat.
I am thankful for having Windows as an option on ARM devices. Many hard working people have spent their entire careers developing for the platform and it's nice to see it progress on the Pi.

WOR is blocked from Chrome,, Edge, Firefox, and Opera. Had to use Tor Browser to open the links. When running the EXE to flash the SD widows tries to format the SD card and fails to install. I’ve used my Mac and HP and it just won’t flash. Any suggestions? Always hits 1% and fails. Grrrr
I haven’t had problems with Edge on my 10 year old Mac running Windows 10 or my AcePC mini PC. Try asking on the WOR Discord.
@@leepspvideo This must be part of the new security update inside windows itself. After I had to install on bootcamp to isolate files from parallels I downloaded the latest windows 10 and thats when the searches blocked it. Actually it says "Sight Unavailable". Now my problem is I had to uninstall the win 10 I had on Parallels and if I try to use an older version of win 10 I get a .net compatibility issue. When I upgrade the .net to 4.8 it makes me download the windows update.

As soon as you switch on press escape repeatedly. Not fast maybe once every second. If it still doesn’t work try starting the Pi with no operating system when the Pi text shows insert your Windows usb device or sd card and keep pressing escape.

@@gcoder72 is there anything unusual about your windows install?
leepspvideo I think I found the problem. The CMD can’t run on windows installed on a Virtual Machine since it’s shares the file path with the host. I had to install win 10 on boot camp directly to isolate the file structure then run the CMD and save to usb drive then finish the exe back on the Mac VM side.
That would make a good video for one of your projects, just so people know not to attempt on a VM.

Is there anything unusual about your Windows device?
@@leepspvideo thanks for the reply… no, nothing unusual with my laptop / same one I successfully did the Windows on a Pi process from the December 2020 video that has some similarities. It seems the WOR version has updated (now 2.1.2) since the video and an updated Windows version from uup.rg-adguard.net is now available. One alternative I tried with same error message was to grab the earlier version of Windows used in the video - that option doesn’t seem available for WOR… I’ll circle back to working on it later in the day… thanks again - really enjoy the channel.
@@leepspvideo I think the issue was that I went into the zipped folder and just copied the files directly into the new WOR folder on the desktop without extracting them.
