    I like how well you presented the difference in audio, and on two different mics! I'm currently setting this up in my space, but with the added notion of putting grommets one edge of the blanket, that way I can add hooks to my walls and put them up/take them down easily. Command hooks are a good choice if you aren't supposed to damage your drywall.

    It definitely makes a difference for the on camera mic, Huge improvement. When i watched the video on the TV I couldn't really hear any difference with the boom mic but then i watched again on my laptop with earphones in and yeah could hear a very slight difference.
    I record videos in my garage as well but on a much less professional level. So i am wondering if this would help a lot more for me since i am using cheaper equipment. 🤔

    This is very cool, Id like to see more and more of these sorts of experiments, and particular the relationship between a good solution-And doubling up on it… and what I mean by that is… if moving blankets work, if you packed them into a tighter space in layers, would they gain higher absorption?
    Partially the ease and wide realestate of just hanging or tacking blankets to the way works good - but I’m curious to find combinations that work even better

I do have a small screen protector over the lens though to hopefully help in smaller impact scenarios. The thing is though, it's already June, which means we should start hearing of the GoPro 9 pretty soon. If that's the case, then the 8 and the 7 will go on bigger sales. 8in≈20cm, and 42in is little over 1m 🤪
    for the boom mic: noticeable on my headphones (ATH-MSR7), but not that much of a difference that would justify to put your garage in rags and tatters 😉
    had problems with bad audio myself - and trying to solve it by more expensive mics made it even worse, because the better microphones of course did pick up more of the reverberation 🤦🏻‍♂️
    I built some absorbers with two layers of rockwool each, covered with gray fabric - they are about 10cm (≈4in) thick hanging on the ceiling (with some space between the absorber and the ceiling).
    All in all a quite cheap solution (20 to 30€ per 1m x 60cm panel) - but man, what a difference in sound it makes (at least in my room, which had an awful sound)
    … and: they look really cool - in the end it added to the room’s optic.

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  4 года назад +1

      That sounds like a sweet setup! I think if I ever move out of the garage into more of a studio space, I'll do something like that with sound panels. But even then, I'll figure any way I can to get the mic nice and close to my mouth!

    After a few years of voice recordings (dubbing, voice-over, ADR, etc.) I can assure and repeat : sound quality is way more important than image quality, when it comes to the global quality of a video sequence.
    So... asking if sound-improving is important and does make changes is similar to asking if a better lens shall improve the image quality.
    If professional studios use suspended (and sometimes double-suspended) recording cabin, it's not for the fun of loosing time in the process. You'd be way better with a semi-permanent setup, like fixing some rails on the ceiling then using gromets/rings/hooks and else to attache them. When a wider angle or more space is necessary, you can remove the whole stuff temporarily. I even showed to friends how to create a sound booth for voice recording with a mattress and a comforter (with natural filling)... it work wonders : we recorded a audiobook and it got awarded.
    To listen to your sound, again there's only one way to go : getting rid of those awful earbuds or BT headphones (overpriced !) and get yourself a real pair of headphones. The best bargain, and it's been there for some 27 years, is the Sennheiser HD25. You'll see it on 90% of film and TV sets, it's the best while being the toughest. I know sound engineers who go filming with the same pair for over 20 years now. I have mine since 2016, and they look brand new. All parts are replaceable, the thing can be serviced, but I've yet to see someone damaging one. But their main asset is to handle any dynamic, any sound pressure, any tricky signals (even "square" high-dynamics digital test signals). Also, it is one of the most objective and neutral headphones out there : I'm currently writing this while listening to the Piano Concerto #12 in A major, K.414 from WA Mozart... a delight of a subtle sound, with all wood resonance from the piano and the studio space with all strings at their respective places.
    Both CD900ST and MDR-7506 from Sony are great ones too, a little more fragile though with the first being a tad metalic and the second more generous on the lower part of the spectrum.
    The blanket on the floor is the most useless one. Pick it back and hang it under the ceiling... that shall make a huge difference. The sound tends to spin and ascend naturally, even more so as we speak towards a camera (at eye level) and not with our head facing down. Then, usually, the space above our head is bigger than this between our head and the floor. Also, your workbench/table acts as a sound deflector and prevent any downward bounce... while increasing sound reverberation towards the ceiling. So you know why soundproofing above is more effective than soudproofing below.
    With all these steps, you're on your way to go some three level higher in sound quality. Run a test record now, do the revamp and check again... you'll be amazed.

      Super simple Riley! I have the Rode VideoMic NTG with the Rode extension cable, mounted on a C-Stand from Amazon. On the end of that, I have a cold shoe mount that the mic slips into. I am listening with high quality headphones. It sounds better with the blankets. I highly recommend suspending a blanket from the ceiling in a way that the center is above the listening mic. The center of the blanket should droop about a foot from the ceiling and the edges lay flat. So that it looks like a pillow up there. Your ceiling is the largest smooth surface area. And don’t even bother putting any sound deadening behind you. Your shelf system is naturally dispersing sound with all the edges and objects. I hope this helps

      I'm thinking the same thing, but the blankets might be staying anyway. Even for that 3-5% change, it would be worth the 5 mins it would take to hang them each time👍

    Wooow. If u do the system, make a video! I have an idea not related to sound but same idea to move up n down blankets =p ur face tells that its 100% real. On my note8 no headphones the difference is good. Suitable. U can hear it improves like 50% or so. Is good

    I am listening on earbuds. I noticed the difference, but I have never been bothered by your audio sounding bad. If it's not too much trouble for you to keep blankets up, it sounds better, but it's not necessary.

    As you record with boom mic, and there is very subtle difference with or without blankets, I would say - it's not worth your time and money. Better "waste" it for new video :)
    What I cant find on YT, as a new GoPro Hero7 Black owner, is a tutorial how to setup the GoPro to get the best quality (with most real image) without any after post-processing.
    I have checked some of those freeware video editing software.. Some (the best) are very complicated, while others are too simple (e.g. no color grading possibility).
    I'm not going to buy Adobe or Sony soft - I'm not professional and don't have that much time for my occasional videos editing.
    I would love to find some simple, intuitive software, that would allow me cuts, slow-mo, change contrast and simple color grade - as GoPros dont give a great choice - Flat or GoPro Color (too bright in my opinion).. Before I bought Hero& I also considered DJI Osmo Action. I saw a picture-to-picture comaprison of the two.. Funny thing is: GoPro Color give over-saturated picture, while Osmo was too pale.
    Before I had Lamax X10 Taurus which had very nice color reproduction, 4k 30fps, but virtually poor stabilization and firmware issues.

    Your close mic isn't what is helping you that much.
    The lots of gear around your studio breaks up the sound and acts audio diffusion.
    This is why studio builders recommend having tall bookcases filled with books for home studios.
    It works and it works really, really well.
    Either way, I am surprised how well the moving blankets worked. Will be buying them for on location interviews.

    Not much of a difference on the Boom mic. But if you do hang them up permanently, I'd do gromets in the blanket and steel cable. Treat them like curtains & just slide them out of the way between use instead of taking them down all the time

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  4 года назад

      That was the hope for sure! That might work for two of the vertical blankets, but I think I’ll need hooks and grommets for the last one. We shall see!
