I remember when I was in year six and my teacher told us that crosshatching was just doing lines on top of each other and she didn't really tell us how to do it properly, so everyone's work looked a mess. This is a really helpful video and I'm definitely going to practice crosshatching with my fine-liner pens.

I appreciate this video greatly. Keep up the awesome work, Mark.

With this video, I just realized how much from an individual's character shows in the technique picked and the way it is utilised/performed. Or at least that is my impression.
Adequate pace, engaging theme, think you actually ARE showing both the technique and how to draw the image. Above all, you have great teaching style, Thank you.

I find your technique videos more enjoyable than "how to draw [Character]" videos.
Often, a technique is the sort of skill needed for an artist or designer to elevate their work to a new level. When a technique is plotted out, it fills in blanks that have remained a mystery. The character drawings involve techniques, but for anyone looking for the breakdown on how to do them, it'll remain lost on the mystery.
For a long time I was stuck at a hobbiest skill level (drawing inactivity seems to have put me back there too), and all my drawing research amounted to very little. Eventually I picked up little techniques, and I felt like I leveled up! This trend continued with new skills like life drawing. Cross hatching was always one of those things that I couldn't do very well. So videos like this are very illuminating. :)

I like the "how to" videos like this that are specific to technic, cause it's rather helpful. And also gives a sense of your own style within the technique. I would love more like this one. But don't discontinue the others, cause those are enjoyable as well, where you focus on how to draw a specific image.

Yes, technique videos are the way to go! I've long been a cross-hatching fanatic so this was particularly cool, but insights on any techniques would be really useful. Nice to hear your opinion on dip pens, also. I find the scratchiness actually helps with control; the 'softer' felt or rollerball nibs seem prone to gliding too easily, unless you're very assertive with the lines.

  • @NoctumusTV
    @NoctumusTV 10 лет назад

I can totally relate to what you are talking about building the drawing up gradually. Most of the time I draw on my computer and sometimes I use a brush with only 4% opacity and repeatedly stroke the same area many times to slowly add color with very high control/precision.

This may be one of my favorite videos of Mark's. I'm not actually into drawing manga/chibi style stuff, but I can't help but pay attention to Mark's artistic abilities. Crosshatching is a technique I favor, and I feel pretty confident about my ability with it. It really lends itself to certain textures, including feathers, fur, skin, and stone. I love the extra details that really made the stony texture pop! I have never thought about adding a different technique over it to further suggest a specific surface.
One thing that I think about when I'm using crosshatching is how the lines are suggesting the contour of my shapes. The direction of lines, when placed "properly" (I don't like using that word when it comes to artistic design, but you get my point), can add so much dimension to your sketch. You let the lines dictate the shape (specifically smooth curves) as much as they dictate the contrast.
Last thing - I also enjoy crosshatching because it reminds me of classical sketches and works of art. Using paint would obviously be an ode to Van Gogh, visually. I don't know why the style is so uplifting to me, but I really just get a feeling of joy and sense of beauty when taking in a well done crosshatching piece, more so than most other types of art work. I highly support more crosshatching and other technique videos.

Challenge, Do an illustration for a video, using only basic materials that one might have at a normal desk. #2 pencils, cheap ballpoint pens, white out, a pink eraser, printer paper and or lined paper.
I would really like to see how creative you'd get when working with a limited medium, and it would really prove that its about practice more than materials, and that buying the best materials out there wont make you a good artist. As you've said many times, your audience can make great illustrations without spending 200$ on materials, and shouldn't limit themselves to using everything you use just because you're a good artist..

based around contrast tone then color , was taught like in a water coloring to start with light lines and moving to shadow , a great master of this was Albrecht Dürer in his sketches and engraved printmaking , for offical illustrations it lasted right up til 1820s before they started using photographic plating ,

love, love, love!!! the technique videos!!! Particular characters... not so much, although it does help to fine tune the eyes regarding proportions and I do appreciate them. But yeah, by far I love technique videos a lot more. I tend to get caught up in the details of small areas of my drawings and lose the oversight. The technique videos definitely help me gain some perspective of where I'm at, where I want to end up and how to get me there. This detail nitpicking is what has always hurt me when trying to do cross hatching since it is somewhat of a "free-er" technique. Thanks so much!

Rather, I didn't like how ~I~ did cross hatching, because I could never really do it right, or to a way that sat well with me. Agreed! There are so many different kinds of fires, it would be cool to see a bit on rendering different kinds.
Also, I would like to see a bit on shading two different light sources, like holding a candle while a Bon fire burns in the background. That always gives me trouble, but it may be a bit of a psychological hurdle.

I've found over time, that I prefer watching your video's were your just teaching techniques, more than your how to draw videos. Most of the stuff you teach on your how to draw video's I already know how to do, so these kind of video's seem to help me more, by teaching me stuff I never thought about doing before.
It was nice to see your technique on cross-hatching. I also found quill pens to be kinda scratchy on the paper, though that might just be because I'm heavy handed if I'm not paying attention.xD

I love the way your technique looks. Definitely a different approach than a lot of mangaka with dip pens. I'm specifically trying to imitate Yusuke Murata's approach, especially in concert with a brush pen for the darkest areas, where the hatching is an extension of the solid black.
Also, that gouache at the end really made a huge difference. It immediately made it vastly more three dimensional. Belated thanks for this :)

I think a lot of artists experience the same feelings about the process of drawing you have explained here.

Mark it is absolutely amazing that you produce art like this just to show like a technique. Just . . . wow. Gorgeous drawing (as always). Just bought Mastering Manga one and two and ordered Miki Falls. Can't wait to read them!
