For me the real time shading is what I need to learn. I'm a visual learner, so I learn more by watching people rather than just teaching myself the best way to do something. So thank you Mark for taking the time to do this video. I promise it has not been wasted.

One problem is if you're working on something for an exam - like the GCSE art qualification in the UK. You get ten hours - and that soon goes. You think it's a long time - until you try it.

I appreciate watching your work unfold slowly. My own speed is full throttle and I’m making too many mistakes. To watch your carefully gentle strokes come together, giving the picture form, makes me realise how crucial it is to go softly. Don’t be self conscious about your voiceover. You have a rather soothing voice pattern that also helps convey the necessity for gentleness as you shade.

Like so many others, I think the real time is fantastic! My drawing tends to be rushed and while part of that is me, I think watching 100 time lapsed videos contributes to my problem as well because it speeds up my internal clock. Real time video, on the other hand, gives me a specific example of what I can, hopefully, someday achieve. You are literally demonstrating the patience needed to get the results we all desire. This video "resets" the whole pace expectation and that is why it is so truly helpful. Thank you so much! I could write more but, right now, I need to draw something...

Mark, this IS so appreciated! I am a teacher and I have been using your books (bought almost all of your Manga series, and your realism book). THIS IS the way to help us understand your process and learn about your technique(s)! Thank you! Breaking it all down more slowly is inestimably helpful.
Watching your stokes is about copying your "touch" and to see it all develop is awesome! Shows me the touch and the directions that help you achieve the look you want.
Keep breaking it down, man. Real time rocks!

This video couldn't have come at a better time for me. Now that I've got some basic drawing skills down, the temptation to rush through the shading has been pretty strong, to the point where quality has been backsliding somewhat. This has been a very useful, timely reminder of the virtues of patience and restraint. Thanks, sensei :-)

First off, this is an incredibly beautiful and inspiring work of art. Thank you soooo much. And as far as time-lapse, I prefer real time no matter how long it takes because I try to draw along with you. That's how I learn. So if you run out of commentary music is always great, or even silence. Thank you again. This is so far above most youtube drawings !!!

    Mark,
you are spot on for allowing me to look over your shoulder while you shade in real time. Shading is fundamental to a realistic portrayal of your subject and so subtle it's difficult to grasp other than to see it done. For me the talking is welcome and answers my questions as the pop into head as you move along. If a viewer finds it is too much they can always take a break and return later with a fresh perspective. As for me please continue the way you share your knowledge, It works for me.

I appreciate the real time and the advice to move slowly because I saw details that I may not have caught had you moved faster. I realize that moving slower really does allow you more time to investigate, explore, and do some guess work in order to produce as many shades of gray as possible rather than just the dark darks and the light lights.

I definitely get why you use time lapse, but then again a video like this one once in a while is really helping! I always tend to think that professionals are able to achieve good results fairly more quickly because they have practiced more and know the technique so much it's almost a reflex, but it's now obvious that there's no going faster, you just have to sit there and work patiently. Thanks for this video!

I find it helpful while learning to do pencil art to watch how you draw and shade in real time. So, I'm very glad you shaded for part of the video in real time. As far as whether you need to talk the whole time or play music if you think you are running out of things to say, I think whatever you decide on that is fine. However, I don't think it is awkward at all if there are times when you are not talking for lack of anything to say. I think we are here to learn, and you are actually telling us things just by drawing even when you are not talking. Thanks for the video.

markcrilley I think it was a pretty nice thing
i don't know but probably you could do some "long" video's with at the start you could sai (after the drawing edited into the video) on whitch parts of the video you say somthing and what happens during the video
as an exemple: a 4 houre video (probably 2 or 3 parts if youtube stops you on this durations) and say at the start somthing like: "the first 1.5 houres are sketching/linework* a special comment about that thematic is at the 27th minute
on this way people who don't want to see the sketching/basic lineart will just skip that part and go to the one they're interested in
even if there is just music i think every artist who relly want to get better will watch you carefully how you're doing it so they could notice things like how you hold your pencil without commentary
and if they want to hear the *special advice* they'll klick to the place where you said it, and if they're interested to watch you doing that stuff they will skip to / watch that part again

Mark, this is one of my favorite videos of yours! Shading, tone, and contract are so important. It was very helpful to watch it in real time and understand how long it takes and how patient you are. I think it's fine to have silence at times, so please don't feel that you have to talk the entire time. I've seen other videos where an artist draws in real time and splits an entire drawing into three or four videos with lots of silence. That works just fine for me. I appreciate your time and effort in making these videos for us! Thank you! - Esther

There are parts you could definitely speed up but all the information you came up with while at certain stages throughout the process was really good advice. It's more like a lecture in a classroom when you get to watch it real time and you get to match up the info with each step as you go. I like the way you did this video. Time lapse when you don't have anything to say and real time when you do. In any case, great work!

Hey, Mark. Slowing the video down to understand how you shade properly certainly helps. When I shade, I typically try to go too fast(I get a little too excited about seeing the end result, heheh..). I have paced myself on a few drawings and had some very nice end results, but now I feel more motivated to slow myself down and spend hours on shading to get that proper gradation from light to dark. Tedious process, but the way you've built upon the previous layers looks stunning. Thanks for taking the time to show us! Awesome video as always!

I really liked this video, sincerely. Whenever I'm watching these kinds of videos, I try to catch the moment when the bunch of lines turns into a "real" person or thing. It's almost magic when the drawing starts to "live". I've struggled with some realistic portraits so far and I know how much time and effort does the shading take, even if it's as far from perfection as mine. The video gave me (or rather reminded me - I've looked through numerous shading tutorials so far) some useful information. But most importantly - it reminded me to be patient with all this. I'm aware that impatience is one of my biggest faults while drawing...

I loved to see how much patience is involved in a great piece of art. As a newbie, I find I am in too much of a hurry to get to what I call the "fun" part.

Mark, I've got to say that when I found you around 6 years ago, I was 12 and just started getting serious about drawing. And at the time I was one of those people that always said "why do you skip through the shading?". The need to add blushies hadn't started yet and you used to say 'indicate' a million times per video (I sort of miss it actually)
Though I'll say that since then you've improved the quality of illustration that you produce in the videos.
I was clueless and intimidated not so much on how to shade, but where to shade. And though this video is very useful in seeing how to shade and how long it takes, you didn't really cover where to shade, though I understand that you were using photo reference of the sculpture and thats how you knew where to shade.
However, I was at that stage 6 years ago. And over the years I can almost say I've outgrown a good amount of the videos you put out, though I still watch them. For example, that 'where to shade' video that I would have so desperately loved to see from you back then I don't feel I strictly need anymore, and I even understand how it would be difficult to teach (perhaps something on light sources instead?)
I like this format of breaking your usual thing to put focus on one aspect of illustration thats not necessarily "how to draw this specific thing start to finish"
As a more advanced artist, I find these videos that aren't so start to finish and that give tips on methods more useful. But I do know that you have loads of beginner viewers, much like I was myself when I first found you. So you can keep at what you're doing but throwing in one of these videos in once in a while, I would find it useful.

I think the occasional real time video is very useful, this was very interesting to see and it didnt bother me that you didnt have things to say after a bit. I feel like a learned some important things that i would have missed at full speed, primarily the speed at which i approach shading. Im going to give this slower method a try because I never have, not by choice, but by not knowing just how slow and deliberate you should be, so thanks for this.

To me we need more videos in real time. When learning it's very important to see everything step by step. I enjoy just watching it all take place.

Watching shading techniques second my second helps me understand how to achieve natural looking shadows. So yeah, Mark... I would really like to see more of these videos once in a while in your channel.
Oh, and don't worry about talking... if you don't have anything to say, music will do :) Don't worry Mark, don't feel forced to narrate every little thing you do.

the real time is helpful and necessary. there is a fast forward on the console that we can use if we wish. your touch with the pencil is a skill which is in itself refined. I find I have trouble maintaining such a gossamer like touch. It is such an important dynamic of the shading process and one that creates a bond between hand and eye that is somewhat zen like? work is the only way to facilitate the transition to that state. the patience and time that the technique demands is inexorably connected to the ribbon of graphite and paper that creates the image. thank you. Your meanderings are more of a distraction to your ability to maintain the state then they are to the listener. Thank you again for sharing your art!

This Really helped me grasp the concept of the time it takes to shade. I am really impatient and i want to draw an amazing picture fast but this video has taught me you just can't speed things up. Next time i draw i am going to take my time, if it takes days to complete, so be it. A great drawing is worth the time.

Honestly, I do find it a lot more helpful to see it "second by second, minute by minute" because I am one of those people who learn by having things broken down into crayon. Shading has always been a difficult task for me but I watched your video about drawing Baymax 3 weeks ago and I followed along and I feel I did an excellent job with it, especially the shading because that pretty much makes the entire drawing. I've learned to draw a good bit from your videos and I want to thank you for that. Great video and I can't wait to see what you do in the future! ^-^ Oh also, I like the music idea.

hey don't get so down. I've been there too and I know how hard depression is to handle. it's best to not think about what's causing it and focus on the positives in your life. it might be tough now but it will heal over eventually if you just believe and stay calm and collected.

My high school art teacher had some of those paper blending sticks, but she'd rather we use our fingers.
I liked hearing you fumble over your words and be "awkward". It makes you seem more human and relatable, like you're not some actor.

thank you for the real time. For beginners real time shows us how it's done step by step. Don't worry about boring us or how you sound. If it weren't for real time I wouldn't understand the concept of how long it can take to shade a picture properly. Thanks again!

When I am drawing, I often pull up one of your video playlists and just listen to your advice. I try to match your video with what I am working on. If you did podcasts where you spoke at length about the art and the techniques required to create it, I would listen to it.
