  • @undetestable1
    @undetestable1 9 лет назад +14

    From what I can remember when I tested this out. 7 heads tall equates to about 5'10 which is the average height of an American male. But cartoons (anime, comics, ect) tend to have large heads in proportion to the body and if you are used to looking at them a realistically drawn male head tends to look tiny. The width of the shoulders when facing forward on a real human male is about 3 heads, its rare to see this in cartoons. That said, I have notice that American superhero comics will often make the head on the smaller side if they want to character to look buff...broader shoulders gives that effect.

    • @nathanfuchs1998
      @nathanfuchs1998 9 лет назад

      +undetestable1 Correct me if I'm wrong :) but say you wanted to make a dude who was 6'5. Assuming you are using the 7 head proportion, he would still 'have' to be 7 heads tall. The head of a taller person is going to be proportionally larger than someone who is shorter. It's only something to "proportion" the rest of the body to and doesn't necessarily equate to set "real world" measurements.
      7 heads (more often 7 1/2) is usually used cause it looks more natural then say 8 heads (Vitruvian Man) which is actually popular for fashion sketching and 6 for making things look more childish. Cartooning thereafter would be the distorting or exaggerating of said proportions and the amount would depend on the style or genre of the artist.

    • @undetestable1
      @undetestable1 9 лет назад

      Nate Fuchs
      You may be right i haven't thought about it from that perspective before and its been years since i took a life drawing class. But i do know that when i measured a shorter man's head in proportion to the rest of his body it came out closer to 6 heads tall and a man around 6 and up was about 8 or 9 heads tall. I agree that the head of a tall person might be a bit larger but i dont think its a significant difference. Remember we are stacking the heads ontop of eachother. With all that said everyones body is different a people, especially the tall basketball player types often dont meet up with the expected standard. Like your foot is supposed to be about the same size as the distance from your wrist to your inner elbow or your arm span is supposed to be roughly the same as your height. Most people fall outside the ideal range one way or another. Athletes often have "odd measurements" that make them better at a certain sport. Basketball players have disproportionately huge hands, i believe Micheal Phelps has a super long torso, ect.

    • @viravos
      @viravos 7 лет назад

      , I think its pretty hard to believe shoulders could be 3 heads. Are you saying the whole shoulder span or the absolute value length of each shoulder to the spine? and when you say 3 heads, I just want to clarify in thhis case are you doing long ways or width?

    • @undetestable1
      @undetestable1 7 лет назад

      Not to the spine. I meant the length from one shoulder to the other (left to right). Theoretically you could place a head on either side of your existing head and they should take up the existing space on your shoulders. I hope that made sense?

    few tips when looking for reference material for very fit characters (though this tutorial is from over a year ago). If you're looking for the herculean style build when making a more superman type character (or someone with that type of build) you'd be better looking for a "classic physique" bodybuilder, or a bodybuilder from maybe 15+ years ago for example Frank Zane or even a younger Arnold Schwarzenegger (man looked like an Austrian Superman when he was around 16). Current bodybuilders competing for Mr. Olympia would share a physique closer to that of The Incredible Hulk, but the Classic Physique competition has builds similar to that of a stronger superhero type.
    Another thing to keep in mind, is that what you see on stage and in most pictures of bodybuilders is what they look like while dehydrated while also have a very low bodyfat %, a competition build wouldn't be practical for someone fighting crime. So you may want to look for pictures of your reference during the off season or look at athletes like swimmers, football players, etc.
    tl;dr "Mr. Olympia = Hulk physique, Classic Physique = Superman/Greek legend, highly visible muscles = not hydrated/hungry"

  • @cambi8035
    @cambi8035 8 лет назад +1

    Well Mark, i'm glad you asked, and yes, you are right. Depending on how much you train the chest muscles it will more or less push the nipples downward. However, if you train the lower chest more, it will push them up. It also has to do with just the genectics and muscle formation of the person. Im into bodybuilding and drawing so this video was really great, Thanks! Love and support from your buddies up here in Canada, keep inspiring! ✋🏽

This video helped in a moment in John Steilchenburg when I was designing the characters, this video helped because of how you did this guy, the 3rd main villain guy was supposed to be pretty fit. I liked how he came out, he didn't look just like yours, he had longer hair and a small mustache. He mostly wore a trench coat and had many fascist symbols and shit on his outfit. He led a huge army of Khlakian fascists called the "Arrows Of Light". I won't go on further, but for this video helping with my comic, thanks Mark! -Counter-Weight Comics

    Awesome! I have been wanting to talk to you on many of your old pics. I have been going through your art and having so many "Aha" moments, especially in what people were talking about when they told me "you're pretty good, you just need to work on your shading." referencing cartoons wasn't helping.
    Anyways, A hundred thank yous for the times I couldn't say it.
    Now to the reason I chose to comment on this picture. I enjoy your alternative teaching methods, like how to measure hight without the 8 heads rule. It really brings a whole new light to what I learned so far, and even much clarity. I can't wait until I get your collection of books into my own personal library.
    As for the male nipples, I had to laugh because I remember Robin Shou, who played Liu Kang in the first Mortal Kombat movie, and noticing that his nipples, somehow, migrated themselves to the very bottom of the pecs. I don't know if he had lowered nipples as a kid, but I do believe you are right about the nipples going down the peck, rather than staying in the middle-ish area.

    I'm 25 and was always too shy to do any art in school as it was considered "nerdy" back in the 90's/00's. The height of the figure differs between the character you're trying to draw, when I draw I like to develop somewhat of a story behind them. It helps me get an idea of what they might look like, how they would dress, and facial expression, it also affect the pose they are in. Just a little helpful tip for anyone browsing the comments. I am by no means a good artist but it helps me.

      it's not about creating a story it's about getting the drawing that you want XD
      no matter how i try i never get the character that i want even if i made a story for them DX

    I was drawing this guy right along with you, Mark. My guy turned out surprisingly good considering I'm into fashion drawing and almost always draw only woman.

    I think you receive a lot of coments every day, it's difficult to answer a comment with that quantity of subscribers, you are a pro.

    Very helpful video. That's why I follow your channel, because there are short videos for just a quick look and this long, detaild ones with lots of tips and you explain things very easy to understand. It's a shame that I can't buy your book now because it would be very expensive to send it for Brazil (where I live). Thank you for the video.
