I'm pretty damn good at drawing people. Organic backgrounds aren't really a problem for me. But these more rigid man made backgrounds, I avoid them like the plague. Just following along with this video I felt like a little kid learning to ride a bike, resisting the urge to start yelling "I'm doing it! I'm doing it!" Thank you for being awesome Crilley.
I DIDN'T KNOW YOU ILLUSTRATED MIKI FALLS!!! that was the first ever manga I read as a kid, honestly totally forgot about it until just now. I'm about to turn twenty and here I am learning how to draw perspective from one of my earliest artistic inspirations ;-; (thank you sir, thank you.)
At age 8-10 I started drawing semi-seriously by watching your videos... and here I am in college, coming back to your videos. I have no dreams of pursuing art as a job but I've always found it one of the more fun hobbies I've had. I'm filled with nostalgia right now, thanks for the high-quality tutorials man.
now, this is why I like Mark Crilley. Good day Mark, I am a watcher from Malaysia and I wanted to thank you for the cool stuff that you tough me, I Agree for what have you just said, that is, "anyone have there own way of drawing." That sentence just had me and my Teacher argue, he said Do what he do. But from you, we all have our own way of drawing. You are the courage of my drawing Mark. And thanks for reminding me, that in our first try of drawing, we might not do it perfectly. Mark, you are my Teacher.
I am currently going through all of your videos and I mean all from the beginning I hope you did do more of these.... I can't wait to watch more and bring my worlds to life!
The reason I like Mark so much is because he's really upbeat and fun about drawing. It reminds me a lot of when Stan Lee talk to fans and viewers. Other artists will be half way through a video complaining how it's not perfect, but in reality it's not that bad.
Mr. Crilley I am a thirteen year old aspiring artist that has been greatly inspired by your art. I watch your videos regularly when I am on RUclips. I want to thank you for posting these videos on here. They have really helped me.
A friend recommended this video to me for kind of a starting point, and I have to tell you - I enjoyed it immensely. You really did make it seem like something I could realistically and reasonably do. Thank you!!
As with the other tutorials, this was very informative. I personally didn't think it was too hard or too easy. It was just too awesome! I DO have a question regarding the comic book/graphic novel industry. How would an aspiring artist/author get started with a comic book/graphic novel?
Never would have thought that my college classes would link me to someone I've been subscribed to for about a decade. The immediate feeling of nostalgia when the video started was crazy in the best way.
Thank you for confusing me... I have a maths test in two days....Sarcasm aside great tutorial I've never really attended proper classes for drawing and neither has my school had them. I find this video really helpful.
+Nicholas Harvey It's one thing to imitate anothers artwork, another to create your own. Imitation is rather easy for anyone to do, creating your own work from scratch with nothing but your mind as a tool, is hard. For example, think you could draw this shot from the side instead of the current front? Just something to think about.
Nicholas Harvey I'm saying try to draw a scenario similar to this one from nothing but your head with no image reference, and you'll see what I mean. Drawing and Drawing isn't the same thing. There's creative drawing (from imagination/memory) and re-creative drawing (from reference). I'm sure you like most want to be able to do creative drawing right? All the artists that can do that have inevitably done quite a bit of re-creative drawing, but just repeating that process never got any of them where they are now. Drawing from imagination is a whole new set of techniques in comparison. Actually I'd like to see Mr. Crilley cover that, if he can (and by that I mean it's really hard to describe and teach creativity, how to get images from your head down to paper, there are no guidelines from drawing an imaginary creature no one has ever seen before, after all, no references to follow)
Between the wind sound effects and your movie trailer voice overs ("in a post-apocalyptic, dystopian world..."), you are by far one of the most entertaining tutorial artists I've seen. Thanks, Crilley!
these videos are super helpful. I've been drawing for 20 years (no training. Self taught) and I never learned to draw backgrounds or inanimate objects and such. this has been a major help
As the building styles for castles are different from other styles of architecture, I think that it could be quite enlightening. Mark's sketchbooks show that he is far more than up to the task. Both European and Asian castles /fortified structures comes up in Manga & Anime with enough regularity that it fits in with his channel's tutorials.
+markcrilley Wow this really helped I've been drawing since I was 5, making comics since 2011 and just got into anime in 2015! I've never really drawn backgrounds good and this helped a lot!
This is one of my all time favourite videos of yours it helped me loads - thanks so much Mark and haha yeah about finding the right hard long words and all I'm the same haha - great vid though real good
I wish I could upload my drawing here! I followed exactly what you instruct and it works! it is so amazing! now Im gonna finish the details as my imagination!! thank you! thank you so much for helping me love drawing again! wish you best of luck, markcrilley! ^^
markcrilley You're an inspiration. I love your style and backgrounds I'm working on a graphic novel as well. I'm a big fan of Japanese manga so my style takes a little bit after it. But putting it simply I wanna be just like you one day.
I wouldent know but Watch gurren laganns second half That has some of the best Space animations and art I have seen. Robots Chucking galaxys at each other...
I know I'm super late with this video, but I found this to be a very helpful and easy to follow introduction into 1-point perspective. Those typical lessons involving lines and cubes can get so boring and my attention tends to drift with them. However, in this video, when you can potentially end up with such an awesome picture at the end really kept me focused. Thank you, Mark!
I like this one. I like the whole 1-point perspective thing, but I don't have all the tools u use but that's whatever. Would u be able to make any more? Like of an old cabin, a restaurant on the beach like a shack type thing, or anything like that? U know what I mean? Anyways, ur probably busy and all, but if u happen to notice my comment, plz let me know. Im a subscriber and I loved ur book Brody's ghost. The buildings in it looked soo cool:)
I struggle with where to place my character. Or how to position the background so it doesn't look like I just cropped my character in, but as if they're really in the environment.
mark, as an old fan i can say that you always teach me something new. im drawing my own manga to, and whenever im not sure about something i always go stright to your videos. thanks for your videos.
There was a comment in the video regarding not instructing people to do things one particular way. This is something I've always liked about Mark. I first noticed this while reading "Mastering Manga". Another thing I liked about the book was that reference sections were included, giving examples of features in different styles. I feel as though they reinforced the "Don't do everything EXACTLY in my personal style point.
I really appreciate this video, I was directed here for a class. I wouldn't change a thing, some may call this complicated, but for me, you simplified a semi-complex scene. I can't wait to see your other videos to help with the craft.
This is a great video for me I know it was posted quite a while ago but I feel like I found a gym in cole. I will be checking out some more of your stuff. You have influenced me as I have been stuck. I was working on my own Comics years and years and years ago. Just picking it up back again. Thanks again.
I really appreciate all the perspective videos! I've taken other classes that showed me 1, 2, and 3-point perspective, but none of them really got into building up complete landscapes and backgrounds using perspective. Because of this, I was having an *incredibly* hard time putting to paper what was in my head. And all three of these vids have definitely helped. Thanks so much! (Also -- I LOVE the time lapses.)
markcrilley I'm currently taking lessons and self teaching on creating mangas, animes and writing stories. Your tutorials are helping me out a bundle in my true calling.

I have your book mastering manga with Mark Crilley and I didn't get the perspective thing but watching this video helped me a lot more. You're art is awesome and I loving your vids thanks!!!
I just picked up The Drawing Lesson and The Realism Challenge. My 2nd & 3rd graders, and MS/HS Elective artists tried to draw a watch yesterday. Thank you.
Thanks crilley. I just started doing backgrounds for me and my sister's Manga to day, and I found this very helpful. I really appreciate that you make these tutorials for people man. And so does my sister, she is a huge fan of your style. Keep it cool bruh.
This is my first viewing of a video like this, as I'm new to drawing. Thank you for showing this. you are incredible! You did a good job showing perspective to someone like me who is new to this world.
Absolutely awesome tutorial man!! Loved the use of time lapse as the video didn't get condensed with commentary but could still gather the idea of what you were doing! Was also wicked to see a panel from inception to completion. Cheers!
These kind of videos are absolutely brilliant, I love the finished drawing and the fact I can draw any environment I want through this technique. Cheers Mark!
This was actually helpful usually these videos get me lost but this guys approach to explaining it and not making it too long was neet you just earned a sub
I began taking up drawing based off "how to" youtube videos and I'd like to point out as a "noob artist" lol, I found this difficult as you stated in video. Non the less your videos I find great you are very skilled and I hope you continue to do what you do here. Unlike most of the people I find post on youtube they tend to just show off but you actually do proper how to's with purposeful narrative that guides the viewer through each line of each video. I felt compelled to give my 2 cents and I hope this helped in some way, (re assure you in what you do or some other nonsense lol). Keep up the great work I have already subscribed :)
I think this video will help me understand a bit more of what goes into a background and help me set up some guide lines to follow. Thank you for the help I'll definitely be looking at more videos soon.
Hi Crilly, I just wanted to tell you that even that you said it wasn't a line by line video...I did follow along and it turned out great. My art teacher was surprised how a 13 year old girl like me did the drawing. I really thank you for taking your time to make videos for us youtubers...I once again thank you!!!! :-D
Well that's one way to advertise Broly's Ghost. Lol. Not only was this video lesson thorough, but you convinced me to go check out your comic too. It's awesome. Great content. Thanks for the lesson.
I think you did a great job explaining this as perspective can be challenging. I thought it was smart to avoid talking through every single bit of detail and using the time-lapse worked out. Nice touch with the water color too!
Good job in explaining the perspective. Definitely remember the topics you touched in art class back in high school days. But, very helpful in jogging the basics. Very good
dude thanks so much this makes every thing so much easier i had a couple of classes in middle school on this unfortunately i had no idea what i was doing and even if i asked for help i was still pretty confused this really clears up the who'll concept in a cool and fun way i also really like how you showed a way to draw an overpass that was not all following the same line because i found that, that was one of the most difficult things that i had to draw in my art class keep up the good work!! :).
I still need the 3rd book of his how to draw series!! And any other ones he's made since then. It's been a while since I've last watched one of his videos
"DON'T QUIT YOUR DAY JOB, CRILLEY!" haha your commentary is hilarious! LOVE these videos by the way, I subscribed for the how-to/ tip videos more than the step-by-step drawing videos so don't feel like you always need a drawing vid to keep views up!
Wow I remember watching this in year 6, this really helped. And now I'm in year 8 I'm back were I was and this video has over 1 million views, amazing work keep it up!
Superb! You are a true talent, and able to put even the most sophisticated drawing techniques into layman's terms. -With entertainment value to boot. Thank you very much for posting these. Please continue.
your video is great! I'm working hard to learn perspective in drawing, it's not easy, but with tutorials like yours, I'm learning a lot. Thank you so much!
Mark, thank you so much. You are a great teacher. Better than most of my college professors it seems. Will be buying your novels soon. I have the Miki Falls book one but to be honest the storyline isn't my cup of tea. The illustrations I completely appreciate though. Thanks for all your perspective help. (I'm really good at drawing figures but I absolutely suck at backgrounds...)
2:55 I couldn't follow anything from here on. How did you make perpendicular lines in this distorted perspective? How do you know the ideal spacing between the lines in the 2D projection so as to make them look like they're equally spaced in 3D? How do you draw curves, even?
Even negative situations can be inspiring to the mind when wanting to get those really great post apocalyptic backgrounds, you know? What you feel deep within you can really help to bring out the best in you as an artist also!
Omg, thank you SO much! I have to draw perspective for school and I didn't knew what I should make because I find it really hard to make something. I definitely gonna try this! Thanks Crilley :) you're the best
Hi Mark! Very useful video. I think it's well explained each step that you took to get the perspective. Watching many artists videos, like yours, bring back to my memory all what I've forgoten of my art and design classes. Thanks for sharing! Have a good one!

I just wanted to tell you that even that you said it wasn't a line by line video...I did follow along and it turned out great.
Thanks for the lesson.
your little side star wars comments and sound effects make these videos so much more interesting!
Thanks so much. You have taught me so much and even helped me out with my art projects for school. Your an amazing artist!
I love how you explain everything and by everything i mean EVERYTHING.
Superb! You are a true talent, and able to put even the most sophisticated drawing techniques into layman's terms. -With entertainment value to boot. Thank you very much for posting these. Please continue.
Love your wind sound effects too!!!
your video is great!
I am currently doing Animation and this tutorial really helped me out for one of my projects. Thank you from Ireland!
Thank you so much! These are the best drawing tutorials I have been able to find and your imaginative scenery makes them very fascinating to watch.
Stephen Scherer Thanks!
Horacio Salazar Gómez Thank you Horacio! :)
