Crazy to think how something as simple as a soundtrack and moodier lighting can so drastically alter a game. The PSX dooms are really something special.
The guys at what was then called Williams, who developed PSX Doom, said on Doomworld that they had to focus on the single player aspect, hence the creepy, lonely mood. They had no way of knowing whether people would go to the effort of linking consoles, due to the sheer inconvenience involved
@@adammclaughlin845 My brother and I would link consoles almost evert nigh with headsets playing the campaign together. We would scream sometimes out loud and out father would be furious because he had to wake up early for work.
I loved the original DOOM soundtrack, but these tracks are worthy of the same honor. I don't find them scary, but rather atmospheric. I could easily imagine the music in an "Alien" game.
I think the point of making the soundtrack this way for this ports was because that's what they were looking for. Around those times, the demons and such aren't "demons" in their all right, they were beasts from the hell raised by aliens. You can see it in the old novels, where the whole lore managed the beasts more like aliens than demons, with just the Cyber demon being the only demon perse. So the alien atmosphere was the setting in this game because it was the mood the saga was pointing then. You can see they carried it on all the way to Doom 3.
Doom PS1 gave me several nightmares thanks to the soundtrack alone. Though mixed with the imagery it can be a little much for someone as old as I was when I played this for the first time.
This is the only track that sounds kinda sorrowful for what's happening in the game. Sorrow over the thousands of UAC staff that have been killed, sorrow for being marooned on a rock in space all alone, sorrow for the hell that will be and has been released on Earth and the millions dead.
This reminds me of that cold, grey Christmas and winter when we got this game, the shock of seeing map 1 and being in an actual environment has worn off and now the fight begins.
I was looking at old conversations on Doomworld and one of the chaps who worked on PSX Doom claimed that Aubrey Hodges made this music track with just TWO instruments. He said most or all of the tracks Hodges write used two or three instruments at most.
the music completely changes the entire atmosphere of the game. I like this version of doom the best instead of the rock and roll of the original. It feels much more serious and horrorish
I had Doom on PC before the Ps1 version. But never could get the music to play. So when I eneded up getting it for playstation I was blown away but the soundtrack. It wasnt until years later I played a port for the PC version where I heard the metal themed tracks.
Yeah, count me in... i like it too! Over the original metal themed pc soundtrack,i prefer this one, since it changes the atmosphere completely, well, its not as if the original isn't good and badass but, overall this one fits more in certain levels, and some others,i prefer the original.
This Soundtrack is incredible it brought such a different vibe to the original soundtrack. This always has been my favourite version of doom because of this
Level 2 plant! Ohh I loved playing this on ultra violence, everywhere you go chaingunguys shooting at me like no tomorrow!😨 also the very first time I heard this track. This has now fallen to one of my favourite doom tracks of all time. So creepy and ....unbelievable.
rockhardgamer 45 if you have the reason this game but I have a question? because I have a different intro music, the menu and HUD also is not black, it is gray like the pc please answer me and never delete these musics I really like :)
When this song comes to mind, I now no longer think of the fallen of the UAC facilities but the Argent D'Nur's landscapes, filled with desolation mostly the collapsed temples and statues that held such high places of regard for warriors of sword and shield.
+Vriska Serket Oh yeh sorry xD Read that wrong :P But I prefer this version of the track but the Watch your Step version has a lot more nostalgia as it was my favourite level for such a long time when I was young. So many good memories of this game :D
I use Hodges' Doom tracks for my horror themed Starfinder campaign. Really sets the tone of the players against the Old Ones allying with demonic forces to sow chaos and madness.
This series of soundtracks should be the true music for the Doom game it fits it perfectly too bad you don’t hear it anymore with any of the Doom games after this but Doom 64 was close.
This music... is... SCARY! But it isn't the music I was looking for, level 2 Plant for the game Ultimate Doom. But this music is so freakin' scary!!! I love it!
Another stage that I remember that really goes with this cool but scary music. Nirnava I think, but this stage was so hard and insane for it was full of monsters & demons. This stage should be the semifinal stage.
@iniche It didn't stop, although that's probably because I was using a laptop at the time. If it continued without any power source at all, I'd probably have hurled myself through a window.
@iniche I still think crashing through a window is the better option. Although given the situation I wouldn't be surprised if I somehow fell back through the damn thing.
This was my first Doom experience. I was 9 at the time and was already hooked on the PS1 from games like Resident Evil 1 and MediEvil. The chain gun was my favorite gun on this game. Plant was my favorite level because of the chain gun. Best Doom out still! Horror themed video games are still my favorite genre of games.
@BaronOfStuff Heh, yeah, I'm obsessed with scary music like these. Of course, it turns against me when it's dark and late night and scary movie thoughts are invoked...
@BaronOfStuff Well, of course! If the music was still playing from a computer needing a power source after the power went out, I think I'd cringe and shiver in a corner.
@BaronOfStuff LATE reply, but... *shudders* I'd hate to be listening to tracks these scary right before a power cut. Because then, somehow I don't think the music stops there...
Indeed, I also hated how they would put Arachnotrons in a couple of the levels in like, the most, erm, how do I say, annoying places where it was hard to hit them as well.
@Superfrog938 Ah, didn't know about that one, at least we are now fellow final doomers (sorta. :p) Because I could never get pass the 8th map on the master levels which is why I never got to listen to this epic music.

Well, I can't argue with the map geometry, but you're most likely one of the many who hated the monster placement. Again, I can see why. Too much reliance on Chaingunners/Revenants is usually the argument.

The music for the PSX version of Doom, especially this piece, makes me think of John Carpenter and Ennio Morricone's music.
I loved the original DOOM soundtrack, but these tracks are worthy of the same honor. I don't find them scary, but rather atmospheric. I could easily imagine the music in an "Alien" game.
This music would go spot on with Alien Trilogy.

I have to say it has an eerie yet melancholy feel to it, anyone else think the same to an extent?
Oh yeah! I have always felt that way about some of these songs and even this one!
Now that you mention it. Yes it does have a tinge of melancholy to it.
Yes, I sometimes get a tiny feeling of anxiety with Aubrey Hodges Soundtrack.
It gives of more of a horrific atmosphere
Doom PS1 gave me several nightmares thanks to the soundtrack alone. Though mixed with the imagery it can be a little much for someone as old as I was when I played this for the first time.
It's definitely got a melancholy feel to it and at the same time, great for a horror game. I love this track so much. The Broken ones.
As far as I know, this song is used for the levels: Plant, Halls of the damned, and Nirvana.
The plant is such a memorable level for me. I remember it so vividly. And getting the secret chainsaw felt like an achievement in of Itself!
This is the only track that sounds kinda sorrowful for what's happening in the game. Sorrow over the thousands of UAC staff that have been killed, sorrow for being marooned on a rock in space all alone, sorrow for the hell that will be and has been released on Earth and the millions dead.
That's why we're Here to help stop this invasion!!!
This track makes me think of the state of Doomguy's mind. The demons are all coming for him and he's completely alone.

The PC versión es much better than psone
It really puts a serious overtone to what's going on and makes it creepy as fuck when there's a dark room in the game.
This chills me out and gives me goosebumps at the same time to this day. It really changes the game into an atmospheric 90's horror game. I love it.
Ever since I was a little kid this has been one of my favourites.
Alright, this is the second time I woke up today and thought about this song. I must miss the old Doom on Playstation a lot.

Hugs the corner, checks ammo, looks around, man this shit is getting worse... Slowly advances toward the door
Doom (each version) has such an amazing sound track.
If these tracks played during Doom 3, it would probably be a bit more enjoyable than the dead silence
I personally enjoy this one because it reminds me of it's remix used in Watch Your Step from Doom 64 :D
Those were good times.
+Vriska Serket Watch your step is a remix of this track. Exactly the same track but its remixed in small ways.
