    To be honest this track fits the theme of Classic Doom perfectly. You're a lone space marine stranded in the cold darkness of space, desperately trying to survive by scavenging supplies and learning the truth behind the demonic invasion.
    Not saying the rocking metallic soundtrack is bad, but that should've been reserved for Doom II where you're literally declaring an all-out war against the forces of Hell to save planet Earth.

    I'll be honest, my first experience with Doom was the PSX version. It gave a very strong impression of horror. Combined with the fact I read the manual about the story and it did feel scary as hell.
    Years later I got the PC Shareware version of Doom 1 and wondered why things were so different. It wasn't till years later until I got Doom 1 and 2 in full, along with Brutal Doom that I found out more about the differences between the ports compared to the PC versions.
    To me, both the PC and PSX soundtracks are very valid interpretations of one and the same. One takes a music and metal approach, which give something of a power trip in some vein even in the face of major odds.
    The PSX version puts some emphasis on horror and some will feel that more than others. I liked it and the sound effects from that version, to the point sometimes I play Doom 1 or 2 with the sounds and music.
    I like them both, and the PSX Doom menu music is one that's left an impression.
    My rambling two cents for what it's worth.

    This just shows exactly how much power a soundtrack can have in a video game. Soundtracks are usually taken for granted by most people saying that they're not as important as other assets. One simple swap of a soundtrack can COMPLETELY change the entire tone and atmosphere of the game

    • @johnsmith-bq2vt
      @johnsmith-bq2vt Месяц назад

      It wasn't just music that was swapped, but lighting and sound effects. Nonetheless your point still stands - music is very powerful used correctly, and highly underestimated especially in the modern age.

  • @OcelotMorris
    @OcelotMorris 8 лет назад +95

    For me, this is my favorite Doom soundtrack. The music gave a real sense of isolation. I would stay up late playing doom in the dark, with my headset on, to keep from waking my girlfriend, and this just played right into that tense atmosphere.
    I totally get those who liked the rockin' original soundtrack more. It creates a different feel for the action, especially in the later levels. For me, these dark foreboding tracks juxtaposed with the crazy action on the later levels was especially jarring. You'd finish killing fifty demons, and when it all quieted down, that creepy music was still reminding you that you're alone in hell.
    The most disturbing, for me, was Mt Erebus, where the background music included the occasional sound of a baby crying. That was messed up.
    Thanks for posting this!

  • @OcelotMorris
    @OcelotMorris 10 лет назад +30

    This was the first version of Doom that I played, and I thought it was amazing. The opening hangar, with this really atmospheric, creepy, and menacing music really lent a feeling of isolation and fear to the game. I'd seen it on PC a while back, but never paid much attention, so when I finally played on a PC at a friends house, I was startled at how camp the game felt with the original music and sounds. It really shows how which version of the game you played first, really shaped your idea of what the game was about. I think most people who played the game on the PS1 first, approached it with more caution, simply because of the different background music. An excellent adaptation, even if they left a few monsters and levels out.

    This soundtrack described in vocabulary x3:
    *The deep atmosphere coming from this very track tells you of a story on how unforgiving, desolate and unwelcoming, this piece is and will not be as willingful as one can believe.
    The sounds, of this piece, tears down your spine and bubbles your skin as if you could feel the cold, rotten air, that lingers within the walls of the abandoned Hangar, settle on your pimpled flesh.
    This is not just music; This is a grisly, audible, tale that there is no more badass music, or a dead bunny, to drive you home...nothing to motivate you towards your goal. Instead...you are forced to survive through a twisted, and fateful, puragatory of darkness. This is Doom...Aubrery Hodges' vision...of Doom.*

    Weirdly, even though I played (or rather, watched my dad play) both the PC and PlayStation versions, the PS version's soundtrack was the one that stuck with me until I finally played the classics again on the Xbox port of Doom 3. All those years I'd had this memory of Doom being this dark, terrifying horrorshow with scary minimalist music (well, that and the fact that the Pinky demons and especially the Lost Souls terrified little me). So imagine my shock when I fire up Doom on my Xbox as a teenager and am blasted with "At Doom's Gate", haha :D
    I really love both soundtracks, though. When I play on PC (I play the Xbox 360 ports on my XB1 too, especially for No Rest For The Living), sometimes I'll be in the mood for the classic soundtrack, and sometimes I'll be in the mood for this creeping dread.

    So yeah, People wanting epic badassery could go with PC, whilst People wanting horror could go with the PSX port or the N64 sequel. And PC owners nowadays have ways of going with the latter. 'Doom' PSX TC and 'Doom 64 EX', anyone?

    Ooh *shudder* this brings back memories. For I remember the name of the stage that goes with this cool but horrifying music, its called Barrels of Fun... Its full of barrels of gas and you gotta be extra careful that you do not fire if your surrounded by barrels of gas. And the creepy sight is that the sky is bloody crimson and full of fleshy dead skulls.

    I know original PC purists won't have it, but tbh I never liked that tinny, metal music. It just irritated me within a couple of minutes of listening to it.
    The only Doom I play on PC now is the version with the PSX music files. It utterly transforms the game and turns it into an atmospheric, dread-filled experience.

    i am going to be listing to this music from now on, while remapping the doom 2 levels as this style of the creepy side of doom has been forgotten over time and through new mods, this has to be some of the best music in any game related to there own title hands down, this is what separated doom from the rest of the games.

      @@jigendaisuke8962 Not true. Just like many things, Doom can be interpreted in many paces. The fast paced rock music of the PC or the hopelessness and darkness of the PS1 version. I grew up with the PS1 version and I have played the PC version, too, several times. I like both. There is a thing called opinions, even if this is a 3 year old comment.

      Romero and Carmack should get more credit for what they did. Some noname idiots who achieved nothing have streets and other public venues named in their honour.. Romero and Carmack should get the recognition they simply deserve. They changed the idea of entertainment for tens of millions of people on this planet.

    The PC was soooooo bad that I had to turn it offwhile playing. Then way later on a friend of mine showed the ps1 version and yuk! But damn the music was so nice and fitting. He burned the music on a CD and gave it me. I would then play the PC version of Doom and have the PS1 Doom music running in the background.
    It made the game more imersive scary
