I went to school with him in middle school back in the 80s in Sarasota/Bradenton, Florida. Who would have known then what he has become now!?! Much love, Rob 💘
As a musician who really does not listen to much radio music, I really admire the songwriting and individual talent of each band member. The bass lines in this song in particular are so underrated!
I am so glad to say I grew up in the 90's, with this music. so authentic and timeless. songs like this were so great. instead of people hiding behind computer screens or looking at their cellphones all the time, people seemed to communicate more face to face. social media wasn't a thing. just cool songs on the radio and cool music videos on tv. what a time to be alive. even though you can see these videos and hear this music on RUclips now, there's simply nothing like hearing the music back when it came out and was being played on the radio constantly. when I heard a song I liked, I would go buy the album. I still have all my old c.d.'s from the 90's. songs like this were special. life was simpler and not as scary, to me. social media seemed to water down the authenticity of music. there are certain artists I still like, but nothing compares to the realness of 90's bands
I feel the same way about the music from the 60's, 70's & early 80's. Those were the years that built the foundations of progressive rock, metal, and smooth mellow harmonies that made us parants, and raised youre generation, and hopefully inspired our love of music as much to you all. We lived in a time when it was free to see bands play, and only a couple of tv shows even covered music back then. Like Ed Sullivan or American Bandstand, then later on in the 70's came the Midnight Special. Now, there's too much going on in every direction to keep up on the new talent thats out there, and too many faces glowing from either facebooger or tic-tack to care much. And it seems that lately some are more intrested in voicing their opinions about politics, than singing their own songs. To say you seen Cream, The Beatles, the Eagles, or the Stones, says alot more than just an era of music too. Keep Rockin & Keepin it Real my friend, cause the music never stops. I know, i listen to dead people now
The 90's was such a special time for music. Matchbox 20, Goo Goo Dolls, The Wallflowers, Alanis Morisette, Hootie and the Blowfish... they all made up the soundtrack of my 20's. I am proud to have grown up with them all.
+FireCracker3240 Yes 90s music was soooooo good. Smashing Pumpkins, Green Day, Alice in Chains, Goo Goo Dolls, and Blink-182 were my favorites during this era. There many one-hit wonders like Semi-Sonic, Shawn Mullins, Nine Days, and Blessed Union of Souls.
Underrated? I swear the least original and intelligent people use that comment on every video. They were huge for a good bit of time. All over the radio, on tours, solo stuff, winning awards. Wtf are you even talking about
Iwas here 20yrs ago and im here juky 2024 and iwill be here in 2044..To everyone reading this we dont know each and probably we may never but may God lead and bless you in all your dealings in world.
15 years ago I had severe depression this song helped feed that depression! It was there for all my dark nights. It held me tight. After I had found help. I was finally able to come back to it and didn’t a new meaning! 15 years later. I can finally say I survived. I can finally say I survived. I will give all my credit to this song! Why I felt alone in my darkest days. This song was always their on repeat. Every mark on my wrist! Every pill I took this song was there! Unfortunately that’s the only memories I have of it. This time I’m going to make new memories! If you suffer with depression and you are reading this please reach out to me! I know the feeling! I know the pain! I know the hurt! I was their at 1 point in my life! I still struggle! Your life means something to me! You are all great people! Now this song is on repeat for a new reason! Time to change the future!
I'm here 2024....I'm almost 42 now with two grown sons and I still remember every word to this song..but i can't remember what I had for breakfast...lmao
I'm here! Was directed to a live version a few weeks back where he explains why he wrote this song. And made it infinitely more sad to me. Keep on keeping on y'all.
"She swears the moon don't hang quite as high as it used to" is one of my favorite lines ever. Simple but implies so much. First of all just the sheer loneliness and boredom that would lead to somebody noticing something like that. The beginning of the descent into madness required to swear that a celestial body has shifted in the sky. Another angle is the beauty of the night that the moon once brought has been lost to pain, sadness, and the increasingly obvious truth that the sun has set on your life and the moon is soon to follow :/
I'm still listening! Saved my life from an abusive relationship. The more I listened and sang along, the stronger I felt and have since escaped that relationship and moved on to an incredibly healthy, beautiful relationship! Thanks to y'all and thanks to God! 😚😚😚
When I was 5 years old. After experiencing some heavy trauma. My mom 25 at the time, had a late night (3AM) paper route, and we would do it together. I’d jump the window and toss the papers and we’d listen to Matchbox I can’t help but tear up a bit listening to most of their songs. They are and will always be apart of who I am and where I came from and the things I got to do that differed from the norm.
I'll never forget 1997, driving down the highway in a beat up old car with the windows down and this song blasting. Funny how 20 years later, I randomly thought of this song at work today and felt the need to listen to it. God I miss the 90s.
For me, it was playing this song that I had recorded (from the local radio) on a tape in my family home blasting it out on the stereo that sat atop the fridge in the kitchen. Much to my parents displeasure till they eventually loved it and is probably one they'll remember of me as a kid
Came looking in 2024 for this song, I'm 34. This song has always had a string connected to my heart. ❤️ this band. Thank you for all of these classics. Made the 90's for me something beyond special.
90s was coming out of the 80s recession credited to Reagan and Bush Sr. Had a decade of prosperity. No cell phone distracting everyone. Companies still had pensions. One could have switched jobs at will. It literally took less than a week to get hired instead of the endless interview process of today. Federal budget had a surplus and national debt was being paid. Then the 90s ended and boom, 9/11. George Bush Jr. and his dumbass terrorist level chart to keep the public in fear and him in power. Then came the 2008 "Great Recession" once again attached to someone who's last name was "Bush". Took nearly another decade to get back on track but an insanity asylum candidate was elected President. Under his leadership, 2020 is doing "so well!" sigh.
Would not be surprised if the rock stations wouldn’t play since it was too pop and the pop stations wouldn’t since it was too rock. Get past genres and sub genres music is music is MUSIC.
Just knowing this was about Rob & his mom's struggle with cancer makes every note & lyric that much stronger. What an awesome tune that really encapsulates the feeling of losing a loved one after a long, exhausting struggle.
@tomferguston - No truer words have ever been said to fit a situation like that. I personally know all too well about that long, exhausting struggle. You see, I lost my husband of 23 years on May 22, 2023 and this song, for me, it says A LOT and touches my heart even more than it ever did before!! Matchbox 20 was one of my husband's favorite bands and it's ironic because the night I met him, this song was playing. Please let me say in closing here, I wish you and everyone reading this peace, love, joy and happiness. Spend every moment with you're special someone, tell that special someone that you love them...don't waste one minute in doing so, that time is so precious!! Make lots of memories and remember to smile, even through tears, because you know that's what they'd want for you to do. Take care, peace out!
Yeah, you run across those from time to time. I didn't really think much about the lyrics of Shinedown's "The Crow and the Butterfly" until I read an interview where the lead singer said the song was about a parent packing up their child's bedroom after he died, because they just couldn't take seeing it empty anymore. And Seether's video for "Rise Above This" is just gut-wrenching when you know Shaun Morgan wrote the song to cheer up his depressed brother, but the video centers around someone jumping off a building because his brother committed suicide by jumping to his death shortly before the album released.
It’s 2023 this song is not getting old I never get tired to play even for how many years or decade will passed such a great masterpiece during my childhood days ❤
This was my father's favorite song. He was my best friend. He died 5 years ago from cancer. He was 63 when he passed,so yes this is legendary stuff that surpasses all time descriptions. I still miss you Dad now as much as the first day without you and that will never change,I play this for you!
Having songs to remember dad's by is so special! I lost my dad 32 years ago to cancer, he was only 32, and the song that I always love to hear is Go For Soda by Kim Mitchell. I honestly dont know why it reminds me of my dad but it does.
So funny enough I listened to these guys back in year 96 i was 2 at the time sitting in the car early morning going to a relatives house to be babysat, but Matchbox 20....omg nostalgia kicks in, and got back into them today, really awesome mellow music! Glad to see fans rocking out to these guys today!
June 17th 2022. This album is the soundtrack of my youth. It was the first album I ever got and truly connected with. My older brother gave it to me and now he has passed away. The meaning grows ever deeper until we meet again...
I always loved the sound of Rob's voice. There is a fiery passion in his sound. When you hear him on the radio you instantly know his voice, it's so unique!
UPS employee of 30 years... started out as a loader ... went in at 3 a.m. to load the trucks.... When this song came on I would sing.... It's 3 A.M. I must be loading
Props to you dear soul. Know this that it could all go sideway without you...the more gears in the machine the greater the dependence... I'm happy to be a gear, but don't F with me.
This song definitely takes me back to the spring of 1997. Life back then was much more fun and carefree. No worries about voilence, racial and economic injustice, no wars, people were in a much happier mood back then. I'm thankful i grew up in the 1990's.
SoCal Laid Back Guy Thats stuff was all around then as much as it is now lol Its just the 97 was such a good year u wernt distracted by the bull sh** of the world.
Matchbox20 has been and always will be the type of music you play when you feel like there's nowhere left to turn. Faithfully a Boxhead for all eternity
I'll be 52 this month and everytime I listen to these guys I feel 32 again 😊 all I can really ask of this group is please put us some more into the world because you have no idea how much you help some of us to get through our day ❤
I've loved this song ever since the first time I heard it! He wrote it when he was about 13 years old and it was about his mother who had cancer at the time! Such a beautiful song ❤!
Columbus, OH Summer 1997. $8 tickets with my college buddies to see a band named "Matchbox 20". Best show live show I've ever seen. Where have the years gone?
To the person that reads this, I ask the Lord to bless them and their family, to cure them of every sickness and pain, to fill their emptiness with love joy and peace, to rebuke the enemy from their lives. " ASK JESUS TO COME INTO YOUR HEART AND SAVE YOU, AND TO FORGIVE YOU OF YOUR SINS, FOR WE GIVE THANKS AND GLORY TO THE LORD. IN THE MIGHTY NAME OF JESUS CHRIST AMEN!
+CaapriceTube Check out the music from the 60's and the 70's if you like this..Start with the Doors and work your way through Grand Funk and onto Led Zepplin..You won't be disappointed..
Damn I miss the 90s I love you 90s. Thanks for letting me be a teen in the best era ever. The memories will never fade. Who's still listening in 2018?! Matchbox twenty forever :)
Rob Thomas' voice always makes me think of being 18, walking the California streets at all hours of the night with my cousins. Wasting time was so much fun
I’d like to think what I’m on is some kind of spiritual journey. Sometimes I question if I’m still doing the right thing or on the right path. No matter how lost I become, I always come back here, to this music and this band specifically. There’s a special place in my heart that nothing or anyone could ever change for the feeling I have when coming back to this. It reminds me of a time when my heart was truly at peace. No matter how far life takes me, here is where I will always find my center and I hope to get back to it someday.
Miranda, I could have written your exact words. Thank you sugar, this song is #1 on the soundtrack of my life. All their songs actually. They're on my obtainable bucket list, lol. Hopefully, I've tried for 2 yrs to see them in Rogers AR but covid has screwed that up. Maybe 2022...... Hope you and yours have health, peace and especially love. 💚🙃💚
I have tickets for matchbox concert Glasgow 2004 .it got cancelled at last minute ..very sad but understand why travelling was postponed Still love your music xxx especially one less day xxx♥.
Working offshore Louisiana 1990s 200 miles off Venice Louisiana taking helicopters out to the oil rigs and the furious winds and huge seas and fishing working and great Cajun creole food !!’ Awesome memories 3AM always wafting through the vessel. Great memories
This song reminds me so much of my gram. She was always that "she said its cold outside and she hands me my rain coat" kinda grandma. And her main job always started at 3am cleaning at a local college then go off and clean house for people on the side from 4pm until 7 or 8. A lot of memories growing up involved her. Each and every time i hear this i will always see it as her way of saying everythings gonna be ok.
It's currently 3 am and it never fails - this always pops in my head when I am up this late and can't sleep. I hated this band when they got popular because I'm a metal head; yet here I am, pushing 40 and loving Matchbox20. Still a metal head though lol
I'm a 20 yr old grunge, and 80s rock and pop guy, who discovered them and Dave Matthew's from my pops. Great bands. It's a magical thing to see different tastes come together. Badass.
@@JBD0909 I'm 36 and its awesome to see the younger generation following this type of music. My oldest daughter is 15 and she enjoys 70s and 80s rock/ pop, I've been doing something good lol.
You have been gifted with an uncanny ability to write music #RobThomas. I have been a fan for about 15 years. Still like what i'm hearing 😀👍🙋🎸🎹🥁🪘🪗💜💙💖🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Last concert I went to Matchbox 20, Southaven, Mississippi 2016, great concert, but missed Counting Crows they canceled, sad to miss them, but lovwd Matchbox 20, saw Rob Thomas bring his dog out for a break before concert he spoke to us, was the best!
I was at that concert to. He took a selfie with a girls camera and he performed his ass off. His shirt was soaked. He really give it all he had. Love that about him.
This song just fell in my lap one day after my husband had took his own life. His alarm went off at 3:00 a.m. every morning he was a truck driver. This became my song. And I fell in love with the band in Rob Thomas I feel like he's writing songs about my life!!!💜
Man this takes me back to a good time in my life. It reminds me I used to have a family who loved me , they're all dead now. Things have changed and I'll never get those beautiful days back. It's crazy how a song can bring back so many forgotten memories of a time long gone. I'll never forget.
Just saw Rob two weeks ago in CT! He’s my favorite songwriter/singer, period. I grew up with Matchbox 20. The show itself was fantastic, he played both his solo work and MB20! If it’s possible, he sounds exactly the same as he did 20 years ago, if not better. He’s brilliantly talented.
Check this. Some of us are here because we like good music! Don’t what year you’re watching or listening as long as the music is great for your soul and that’s what matters. 😮
@Rob Thomas I live in Knoxville, TN home of the Volunteers. Been listening to you since I first heard Matchbox 20. Love your voice. You could make any song a hit. 🙂💯❤
I'm glad Rob seen his mother survive cancer unfortunately I wasn't so lucky to see my mum survive it but I really hope other people who have relatives who have cancer survive it
living with someone who has bipolar disorder is a stressful life. Rob Thomas and MB 20 music seems like it was written for expressing what it feels like.
It's interesting how you can hear a song that resonates with you even if you don't know why. I've always loved this song and recently found out he wrote it about his mother and her battle with cancer. My mother also died of cancer when I was a child. May Rob's mom and my mom RIP.
I am deeply sorry about the passing of your mother. Mine passed away 10 years ago. November 2022 will be 11 years. I have loved this song since the first time I heard it and did not know until last year it was written about his mother and her fight with cancer while he took care of her. Cancer is a horrible disease. It has taken too many way too soon. Cancer sucks and I hate it with every fiber of my being. May God bless you and comfort you knowing she doesn't have to go through it anymore. It still hurts but I tell myself that same thing often.
@@Facts.About.Everything.RUclips you are very welcome. Out of all the comments and stories people made on this song your story jumped out and touched me. I don't understand why, but it did. As a believer God has a strange way of getting people's attention. I guess this was his way of getting mine. To know others have a similar story and they found ways to cope with their loss. Since my mom's passing I was diagnosed with severe depression, anxiety and PTSD. All of which I was put on prescription medication to help cope. I am no longer on these medications and finding other ways to cope. My hope is and was that you could and would somehow find comfort by some total stranger to reach out to you to say I know what you are going through. May God continue to bless and comfort you and know that you will always carry her in your heart as I will do the same with my mother. Ironically I looked at the clock 8n the hospital as she took her last breath and it was exactly 3am.

As a musician who really does not listen to much radio music, I really admire the songwriting and individual talent of each band member. The bass lines in this song in particular are so underrated!
Side note, if you like bass lines: listen to a song called 'egg' by the garden
Listen to the vh1 storytellers episode of matchbox 20. RUclips will prob have a playlist for it.
EVERYTHING is underrated to your new heads... -_-
Drove across the country by myself with no phone or Internet. All I needed was a map, and this CD.

I know, i listen to dead people now
The times. Oh man. Going through a real dark period and the music of the late 90's really fit like a glove.
100% Some of the best music back then. I can't even listen to the stuff on the radio now
Try bad reeves man on Monday
Or nubreed monsters. My turn with Jesus.
Moon Bear Oh, yes. It was all fantastic. Sometimes I just go on RUclips benders, taking a trip back in time by watching music videos from back then.
Plus DMB and Counting Crows !
don't forget Marcy playground
Don't forget Toad the Wet Sprocket, Sponge and Soul Asylum. Loved all of these bands, 90's was a great time to be 18.
I think that Rob Thomas and Matchbox 20 are way too underrated! The way Thomas writes songs … there’s so much meaning… and I know that I can relate!
Leica...Its his melodic gifts that separate him from the pack.
Underrated? This song was on the radio 25x per day for literally 10 years straight
I am grateful to be had the choice to listen to these songs, that will never grow old
And his voice!!! My favorite
Underrated? I swear the least original and intelligent people use that comment on every video. They were huge for a good bit of time. All over the radio, on tours, solo stuff, winning awards. Wtf are you even talking about
im 66 yrs old just found them a month ago cant stop playing thier songs what the hell love it
Rob Thomas is his name he sings under his real name also.
dean gadwah this song is about rape
+Andrew Ryan really? never heard that before
I heard it was about his aunt who was dying of cancer.
+Andrew Ryan This song is about his mother and her struggle with cancer not rape. What the fuck man?

Im there rn
Hope you guys are okay

"She swears the moon don't hang quite as high as it used to" is one of my favorite lines ever. Simple but implies so much. First of all just the sheer loneliness and boredom that would lead to somebody noticing something like that. The beginning of the descent into madness required to swear that a celestial body has shifted in the sky. Another angle is the beauty of the night that the moon once brought has been lost to pain, sadness, and the increasingly obvious truth that the sun has set on your life and the moon is soon to follow :/

Happy for you!!
carry on girl , be strong xo
When I was 5 years old. After experiencing some heavy trauma. My mom 25 at the time, had a late night (3AM) paper route, and we would do it together. I’d jump the window and toss the papers and we’d listen to Matchbox
I can’t help but tear up a bit listening to most of their songs.
I was cruise down the road in my 65 mustang listening to this on cassette tape!! Love this whole album.......still!!
A Sottilare, I wish I lost my virginity in the late 90's when I was a teenager!
Yeah, and I'd put money on it that you wish you were back there, in that old beat up car, listening to mb20 rockin out. I sure do
For me, it was playing this song that I had recorded (from the local radio) on a tape in my family home blasting it out on the stereo that sat atop the fridge in the kitchen. Much to my parents displeasure till they eventually loved it and is probably one they'll remember of me as a kid
True, this song is awesome. And I also miss the 90s and early 2000s .... good times !!! Thankfully there is RUclips ... kkkkkk
Came looking in 2024 for this song, I'm 34. This song has always had a string connected to my heart. ❤️ this band. Thank you for all of these classics. Made the 90's for me something beyond special.
For those of us who lived it, the 90s made a lot more sense than today does.
Well I grew up in the 90s loved it. And I have alot of respect
No doubt. Certified 90s kid here. I love the 90s alt/grunge
let em know what's up, cause it was banger 🤣

Matchbox twenty is criminally underrated. It's such a wonderful song along with the rest of their creations.
I don't know 1 too 40 song today's music
Actually they were huge back in the day. It's only underrated now because people dont know good music anymore.
Agreed
God, I love Rob. He’ll always have a piece of my heart. ❤ Hot then, hot now. Won some MB20 tickets years ago, they put on one hell of a show!! 🔥🔥🔥
The impact this band has on people is phenomenal. Well done MB20......
Anyone else get goosebumps when the first guitar notes start playing on these nostalgic songs? It does for me every time!
I gotta say Rob Thomas has one of the most recognizable vocal styles ever. What a legend. Thanks, Rob.
This song had aged like wine, it only became better.
Saw him in concert 2 years ago. It's about his mom having cancer. So much more powerful now that I understand it.
his wife also fighting cancer. if im not mistaken a brain cancer. you can check further online. yeah , so sad.
+TheWowwa his wife doesn't have cancer, she had a brain lesion at the base of her head, she had surgery and had it removed. She's okay.
My moms friend is closest friends with the lead singer!
I still miss you Dad now as much as the first day without you and that will never change,I play this for you!
i was just pondering something dangerously similar, how TimeLESS..! Although so does everything
This song is about his experience while his mom was battling cancer when he was young. Peace be with you.
Lmao about 20 other singers during this time sang the exact same way.
Quite raspy vocals yet still harmonic
Fell in love with this song in the ‘90’s still love it all these years later! Rock on Rob!!!

Cancer is a horrible disease. It has taken too many way too soon. Cancer sucks and I hate it with every fiber of my being. May God bless you and comfort you knowing she doesn't have to go through it anymore. It still hurts but I tell myself that same thing often.
@@davidenderli4391 Thank you for your kind words, David. May God bless you and comfort you as well. Blessings.
God bless you
