Keeled Scales!

Hognose snakes have keeled scales! This means that they have a raised ridge in the center making them feel "rough" or "textured" when compared to smooth-scaled snakes! The texture probably helps them with burrowing, and is thought to reduce 'shininess' which could make them blend in better with the ground.
Other snakes with keeled scales include puff adders, desert vipers, and rattlesnakes!
